    A few months back I drove a GT3RS, 488GTB, Huracan Performante and 720S back to back on a track. The 720S was SIGNIFICANTLY faster than the rest down the straight under acceleration, it was very obvious and frankly, quite absurd. Of course, the seats initially wouldn’t electronically adjust and there was a chance I wouldn’t be able to drive it. So I got the full McLaren experience 😂

      Andrew S good question! I’m no great driver so it’s not like I pushed them to any great level but for my tastes it would’ve been between the Performante and the GT3RS, the Perf was faster and sounded glorious but the grip on the RS was incredible, I had an instructor telling me to push harder because I was nowhere near the limit. I couldn’t quite feel comfortable in the 720S but I’m sure it would be the superior daily if you got used to it and it actually worked! The 488 was cool but it didn’t sound great and I didn’t love the turbo lag on the straight, plus the 720S pantsed it.

      @@freshjive818 I don't entirely agree. Customer service - or lack of - is part of the ownership experience of any car and can make the difference between a customer returning or trying a different marque. However it is a massive shame for the people who design and develop these cars to be let down by Mclarens absolutely appaling customer service as the cars are fundamentally very very good as pointed out here minus the faults to bodywork that need addressing.

    Great content...spot on. I have to pick you up on one thing - the power figure. I think the reality is these cars are losing less in drive train than before. This goes back to the gtr in 2009 dyno operators were using 25% for drivetrzin losses- standard for AWD- and quoting inflated figures. Actual losses where 16% ..you see the same now with all cars dynod..all manufactures are not under quoting bench figures more logic is dyno operators are catching up and don't know the real losses .it really bugs me that people think theres a big conspiracy, what purpose does it serve?

    • @JayEmmOnCars
      @JayEmmOnCars  Před 4 lety

      I've spoken to quite a few people who really know their way around a dyno (ie. not owners who are showing off) that conclude the car is making more power than claimed. Not the 800hp that some Americans seem to think, but still more than 720. It's fairly common with modern turbo engines.

    • @dagnut
      @dagnut Před 4 lety +1

      @@JayEmmOnCars any dyno is estimating losses they dont have the offical figures from McLaren for drivetrain losses. They are measuring WHP and calculating flywheel horsepower from an estimated % loss. So only two things can be true, either all manufactures are now underestimating they flywheel hp- a figure only they are measuring on bench dyno OR independent dyno operators are not taking into account the efficiency of modern gearboxes and drivetrains. I choose to believe the latter. Go to any dyno and they all tend to operate with the same % loss calculations depending on tgexdriven wheels. I've had cars dynod and the only accurate figure they can provide is whp that's just a simple fact..I dont know anyone who has had the engine out of a 720 on a bench dyno to disprove McLaren's figures. I've read the same thing about m5s , rs6s and gtrs...the higher measured whp is the margin for error also increases ..you only have to be a couple of % out on estimating losses to skew the crank figure by 50hp when dealing with the 720...sorry for the essay ! One more point the dyno operators are also unaware of the specific torque map in each gear so we dont even know what the torque about should be at a specific rpm for a specific gear..mclaren only quote peak torque at rpm . ..dyno operators obviously know a lot more than me and can map a torque curve quite well but anyone who tells you they can accurately measure anything other than whp is lying

    I have the pleasure of owning both Lamborghini performante Spyder and McLaren 720's spider. Tumi the Lamborghini has more fun to drive as far superior brakes as well. However I still love the McLaren it is terrifyingly fast in a straight line. Yes it is correct that there are many little glitches which are a pain in the ass.sometimes you will push the start button it might not start for 2 or 3 minutes and you have to keep trying to push it to start the car. this can be quite embarrassing especially when a crowd has gathered around as you attempt to drive off. again getting back to the brakes the Lamborghini brakes bite hard and bring the car to a halt very quickly. You really have to slam on the brakes with the McLaren to stop it as it is so blistering fast it requires a lot of foot weight.you just touch the Lamborghini brakes and they are biting hard even if you are at top speed

    If I’d have paid £260k for a car I’d expect everything to work inc the radio...it would just make me think if they can’t get the radio right what else doesn’t work...& with the reputation McLaren have got themselves for quality unfortunately until they correct it I’m not a buyer...certainly not new one anyway..

    I admit I am late in commenting but in my unworthy opinion with any ,eh-hem, fast-ish car, I get a B @ O Beolit 17 and bung it on the passenger seat and tether to my phone for long journeys. Maybe McLaren should do the same. I know, not ideal, but if I want to listen to something and with some grunt, it works more than well enough. For short journeys I go without. Or not.
    My Williams gets a Sony which fits in the glove box. Infotainment is, to me, froth.
    One car maker will soon be clever enough to just use a securely placed tablet.It saves weight, does the job and easy to tinker with and update. This is already happening in aviation, so why not in cars? All that matters is it works.

    You won't be driving a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Bugatti, Pagani or any other limited production hand built cars - Mclaren are actually at the top end of this lot - yeah a little bit of trim may come unstuck and you may have to reboot computer now and again but mechanically they are very reliable especially compared to aforementioned brands - you should give them some slack - they've only been doing this just over a decade but rate of progress has been epic - like he said the new generation of infotainment is going to be a big improvement - PS check out what everyone says about Ferrari infotainment systems - they're useless - Oooh Ford can get it right - cos they have been doing it for much longer and can spend far more time and money developing and testing a lower grade system

    The C8 C8 Corvette mid engine supercar fully fitted out is about $85,000 to $100,000 base model. The front and side look better than the mclaren. The Corvettes interior is much better, the seats are much better, the engine is much better..bulletproof. he air intakes knock the mclaren for six..it's faster 0-60mph in 2.8 . The mclaren is way overpriced. Just wait for the Z06 or mighty ZR1 versions.

    • @dedge12858
      @dedge12858 Před 4 lety

      The C8 is amazing value for sure but it's not really competing in the same sector. Stock it won't be anywhere near as quick since it's down 200BHP, weighs significantly more and doesn't have the same technology - which is one of the things which makes the 720 so godly from a launch. The aesthetics are obviously subjective but for me the McLaren looks way more special. The C8 will no doubt be more reliable though!

    I own a much faster car and certainly have been in other cars which are faster than the 720S. My SL-C in my avatar turns all the heads, is lighter, and probably more engaging to drive... But I still want a 720S! I want to pull the trigger so badly on one, but I just can't knowing their terrible reliability, depreciation, cost of repairing/ownership, and most of all... horrendous customer service! Hopefully this all improves some day!

    every large business, and car manufacturers are no exception, have a 'dust bin' department where they dump incompetent employees (including management) that for some reason or another they cannot otherwise dismiss. i imagine that in the ultra-expensive sports car business, it encompasses any and all things radio. and it has come to pass that management has long since learned to suffer the monstrosities of their labour with a smile; passing it on to the customer, in the hope that the old adage concerning a bad apple and a barrel is apocryphal.

    The weirdest part is this car makes me want a current Ferrari, and I don't even like current Ferraris. It's that moment when you realize what lack of soul really means. Current Ferraris may have less soul than their predecessors, but they still have more soul than this. It's fascinating to think about.

      @@richardneall It's the sound that's my main gripe. The car doesn't really sing. It can certainly be loud, but there is a difference, one that you can't really put your finger on, but you can feel. I was watching a video on the Alfa 8C, for example, and that car really sings. Maybe you can use that to make sense of what I mean.

    • @richardneall
      @richardneall Před 4 lety +1

      Matt Evans, that’s cool. I sort of get the sound criticism although in the flesh it’s not that bad. I do a lot of track work so super loud is a no no anyway as UK tracks have strict noise limits. I guess if you just want a road car the criticism is fair. The thing that doesn’t come through on this video is the unbelievable braking and grip levels. That’s the bit that’s mind blowing, not just the outright power imo.
