appreciate the checkout and the warnings, sale is the way to go it seems. pretty sure we'll see this one with some good discounts fairly soon
this look like it should have been released in early access
Many devs release games which should’ve needed an early access cathegory, with a cheaper price to boot
I bought it on release. I don't hate it at all, but the price and the resolution is an issue for me. I anticipated it being around €30, but I bit the bullet at 50 anyway. I can't say that it's a great purchase and I agree with all of Mortis' points. I find my weapon's durability is running low, money is really tight and it can be tough to move quickly through some maps. Balance is a bit off. No difficulty choice either, which I don't think Mortismal mentioned.
Mort being a bad guy/faction's name makes 100% sense : it means death in French... that's why it was the name of Death's assistant in the Pratchett's novel after all (or a really strange coincidence I guess).
Considering the icon of the channel I suppose it's on purpose that Mortismal gets shortened like that.
Yeah, Mortym is just Mortem with a y (death/dead in latin), and Mortismal is a smashup of Mortym and Abyssmal. A joke about me being bad at games and dying a lot.
have to say, seeing the graphics makes me wish more trpg/crpg games would be this level. its the one thing that often kinda jars me how they look like normal games from 2010.We don't need GoW levels, but a little bit more like this game with PWoTR would go a long way
@@Pmurder3 And that's why BG3 is going to be big.
thank you for the heads up and honest review!!
The pricing on some indie titles is really baffling. What is more baffling are people defending those indie titles' shortcomings because "it's just an indie game". Sure, but if you're pricing your game like the big boys than you have to deal with being compared to the big boys.
This was on my radar so this is all very good to know. Thanks for the info!
As a note, you can force whatever resolution you want by going on the steam game options, and on general->launch options put "-FULLSCREEN ResX=3440 ResY=1440", this is for my 2k ultrawide monitor but you can set the resolution to whatever you have ofc.
Redemption Reapers sounds like the name of a WoW guild from 2006.
Thanks for the video. Onward to 200k. All glory to the algorithm.
Thanks for looking out for us brother ! Bravo Zulu
I was hoping to see you take a look at this game ! I'm sorry to see this game lack stuff :( glad I'll buy it at a deep sale
Seems rather rudimentary to me in every aspect, combat included. Also not a fan of durability mechanics, especially in this type of game. But the price is absolutely insane. Even if it didn't lack the polish (like screen resolution limitation, saves, etc..), it would still be a $15 game on a good day.
For contrast, there's a newly released trpg-like, which is twice the game for half the price so to speak. I'm talking about Mahokenshi, what are you thoughts on that? I know you're not really into deck building, but they have mechanics that can mitigate the random nature of cards. Considering that it's quite a fun and short game that you can 100% in an afternoon with relative ease, it's a good way for you to make at least 2 videos (first look and review). Would love to hear your take on it!
Nice review hopefully the developers see this and help fix the game
I've been looking forward to this one, so I'm glad you gave a warning about what you think the game's real worth is.
I had my eyes on this one. I appreciate you checking it out. I would say to wait like lost Eidolons, the game got updated significantly since its launch .
Lost eidolons? Might check that one out.
@Grey Wolf yes sir. Is it good, just do your research so you know what you're getting into.
Lost Eidolons Review: czcams.com/video/YH2TJSiC30A/video.html
Enjoyed my time with Lost Eidolons. And since it has received some solid updates that should make it better.
looks great
Oof I was looking forward to this one a lot as well. Looks like a wait for updates one for me
I am enjoying the game so far, but the early hours are pretty difficult. It is weird that you get the skirmish option in chapter 2 or 3, mine showed up at chapter 8 or so, odd. I play on the switch btw. The music is excellent in this game, I have being humming along especially in the few first chapters.
Dang. Was looking forward to this one. Guess triangle strategy or ogre battle will get some additional play time.
that's unfortunate, from the trailers and price i thought this would be something similar to the quality of King Arthur: Knight's Tale. thanks for the overview.
Waiting to play this one on my Steamdeck when it arrives.
The Steam deck seems like a perfect fit for TRPGs
thanks a lot for reviewing the game. gonna wait for a deep discount and some fixes as well. hopefully they balance out the gold and the weapon durability plus the lacking of other resolutions and audio issues.
Hopefully they patch and give this game some love. I would love to sink my teeth into a good indie TRPG and I like the art style here
Thanks for saving me some money, much appreciated.
Damn, I quite liked the artstyle, guess it's a wait for sale then.
So could it be much better with an update that lets you earn more gold so you can do more training and repair those weapons?
Good show sir
I'm so conflicted on this one, I was pretty excited for it, but everyone seems to be saying don't buy it.
I'll pick it up on deep sale, when they've polished it a bit.
Thank you for warning. Can i suggest Urtuk: The Desolation as good example of indie trpg ?
Thanks for the "review". Great as always. I want to buy this game because I just love this kind of games with weapon durability, tactical grid map and I also like the visual tone. I heard that the characters where 1 dimensional and that the story was bad. Why, oh why can't game developers hire descent writers that understand good character concepts? Damn. I don't know. All I want is a good paper, stone, scissors-like kind of game.
What a pity. It looked amazing on trailers. It's kinda like Astria Ascending.
No arbitrary resolution support is kinda glaring in 2023.
Thanks, you saved me from a bad purchase!😮💨
Any plans to check out Alder’s Blood Mortym? Bit older now but fits nicely with games like Othercide you’ve reviewed lately.
No current plans
Saved me $50. Big thanks
What were they thinking with this price tag lol?
Yeah it's too bad about the issues, especially the weapon durability stopping replaying the missions.
I think I appreciate the reviews of iffy games more than the solid recommends, as it means I'm not extending my queue of games to play. It sounds like these guys have combat issues that even most TTRPGs have solved by now, and a $50 base price is just...evidence that game prices are getting ridiculous in general, possibly, but certainly not realistic.
So got given a copy of this game, i got say I hate the random level up also no info on what each stat do.(I think Strength is dmg, Endurance is Defense?, Dexterity(acc and crit?), Faith (?) Speed(how much u can move? maybe evasion not sure and no way to check it). Would appreciate some help on this nice video by the way.
anybody else wanna see this man play a fire emblem game??
Such a shame they released this in such a shody technical state, especially for PC where things have been so bad lately. Hope they work things out and improve it over time as some aspects look interesting.
Literally just heard about this one; was interested until I heard it was made by one of the guys who was responsible for Radiant Dawn. I know that Fire Emblem game has its fans; but I honestly cannot remember having too much of a good time with it, so I was gonna wait for reviews.
So far; at least from the ones I've seen, have kinda told me that I should probably just stick with something else to satisfy that TRPG itch after finishing up Engage.
On specifics; I think going for small parties in TRPGs is always a gamble. You always run into the issue of how little customization you can have with a set amount of units; and can oftentimes get shoehorned into certain meta strategies harder than when you have a wider variety of classes and characters to play around with. Ironically though; Radiant Dawn had the opposite problem of too many units; and a lot of the ones being available were pretty awful, so it may have been an over-correction on the creator's part lol
I honestly love the look of it and style (and TRPGs) but with all the bugs and lack of dev I’d say 25-30 US dollar range. Too bad they are going to hurt their sales with such a high price tag.
Pls review fear and hunger (are you interested in horror games and I mean the ones where you can fight back)
Neutral on horror in general really
Thanks, I was wondering about this game, but yeah, $50 is a hard sell.
Just finished the game today and the ending is really great, don't let the early hours discourage you from playing. The price may be high, but a mature and dark story mixed with intended difficulty (like dark souls) combined with a stellar soundtrack and strategic combat is a plus in my book.
What a shame. I wanted to give this one a chance after these developers made the amazing Ender Lilies, but it looks like they struggled to make the jump to a wildly different genre. Maybe it will be worth another look once it is (hopefully) patched and on sale, but I cannot justify the price it is right now.
til mortismal really likes 4k :)
I do, specifically 1080p blown up on a 4k monitor looks terrible, but that's the least of this games problems.
Well that's a shame. I just played the developer's previous game recently, "Ender Lilies", which was very well liked. So coming off of that, I had my eyes on this. But seeing the reception be so...middling to put it kindly is rather disappointing. I guess they tried to branch out and it just didn't work out.
That said, to go on a side tangent, I got super confused looking at the comments. I was seeing people bring up niche Japanese DRPGs that were completely unrelated to the video on hand and I thought I was missing something, especially since they were getting upvoted by the channel. Turns out, CZcams was just derping and combining comments from the two or three previous videos I watched into this one. Refreshing the page fixed that but man, that was weird.
Give Blackhearts 2 a try.
Will you check Lost Eidolons ? Once again solid review / advice
He's reviewed it
@@jellydamgood oh yeah I checked and I even watched the video, I totally forgot about it damn
@@john0doesnt haha, such things happen sometimes. I bought it off his recommendation, and no regrets.
Wow, a 1080p resolution cap for a new game released in 2023. That's..... genuinely insane.
I had my reservations about this game when it was announced, but I was willing to keep my eye on it since I kinda liked their previous game, Ender Lilies. But is looks pretty basic. The entire "superedgy teenager" vibe it has also is a major turnoff for me personally. I think you're right, based on what I've seen from it, 30$ probably would have been the sweet spot (if it has been a little more polished).
oh no. Thanks for the recommendation though. I was really hoping that this was going to satisfy my Fire Emblem need (Engage is bad imo) seeing that it basically came from someone central in that franchise.... but u not the only one who said that this is a bit of a miss. Sigh
Whoever made the decision to charge $50 for this should be relegated to just bringing in coffee and donuts from now on.
I loved Fire Emblem, and wanted this game to be good :(
Have you ever played The Banner Saga?
Not yet
It's strange, cause it looks great, maybe it was a budget issue, so sad, It could be a hit if it had, maybe, more time in the oven
Im really hopeful for this on switch. Looks far better than fire emblem games. I want shining force but this might have to do
That movement system seems really fiddly. Running around freely in what is actually a grid system, instead of just selecting grid you want to move to.
Didn't seem like you could see the enemy movement range either? That combined with the lack of zone of control seems extra annoying.
You can definitely see the enemy moment range. There's many other issues, but that's not one of them. The tutorial is not horrible either.
You can highlight the enemies to see their movement range yeah
I was excited when I saw this game until I read some reviews
Against the Storm spoiled me when it comes to pricing of indie titles. Even tho it's EA, for 15USD it offers more than full releases from major studios. 50 in case of this game just feels greedy.
30 bucks would've been a good sweet-spot.
10 bucks is absolutely unrealistic, though.
@@WhyWouldICareAtAll No.
free comment.
Gameplay looks like Fire emblem awakening
If this game was 10-20 dollars maybe we could talk. Translation: it’s not you, it’s me. But it’s mostly you.
Which voice acting is bad? English ? Even Japanese?
Is 4k considered a basic necessity? Steam says less than 2% of its users have 4k monitors. Like I'm sorry if it's annoying but that's a problem I'm way too poor to care about.
For 50 bucks it should be. If it were a 20 dollar game, then whatever.
Individually no. Packaged with all the other problems and a 50 dollar price tag, yes.
Too bad. This was #1 on my buy list. Will skip it then unless i see it on sale before diablo 4 arrives.
Mort= death
Well, just like with AH, missing features such as FoV, resolution here, is the exact reason I never buy games one day one. Its shocking how this is neglected.
Hot Take: Mortismal has 250K subs before the end of the year.
That's the goal :)
I will wait for sale and a patch for higher resolution. Im not buying 1080p games. This isnt the year 2000
Big disappointment here. I was looking forward to this one, maybe a sale and a few patches later it might be worth checking out then
Rarely I see you really not recommending a game
Pity I bought it before watching this, I was very hyped for this but it is really meh. You pretty much cover all the problems with it.
What a shame - still need time in the oven it seems.
Only 1080p, bad voice acting, and unable to save during a battle seem like pretty minor issues tbh
Correct, but add the issues with weapon durability and gold on top of a $50 asking price and you have a problem.
50 dollars 🤣
More like “check out of” 😂😂
If you have problems with the VA, I think it's a japanese game, you should probably go for the japanese voice acting
It's a tradition at this point, japanese media can't have good english voice acting
Accurate review here; this game is terrible.
Oh no! So disappointing, it doesn't look good.
Terrible name.
