The Jesus Dynasty and Islam: some remarkable parallels

  • I read from 'The Jesus Dynasty: The Hidden History of Jesus, His Royal Family, and the Birth of Christianity' pages 287-288, by Dr James D. Tabor. www.amazon.co.uk/Jesus-Dynast...
Professor Tabor argues that far from setting himself up as the chosen messiah of a new world religion, Jesus saw himself as a descendant of the royal house of David and head of an apocalyptic movement aimed at establishing a ruling dynasty in Israel. Led by Jesus' own family, including his brother James, they would lead the Jewish people to political, social and spiritual redemption.

I am from Turkey too, and his concise intellectual work on here is so great. Straightforward, honest approach that he takes to the issues, and his commonsense-based and pragmatic methodology (as opposed to highly abstract and theory-constructive approach of the Continent) woke me up from the dormant state of my reason on religious issues. The questions of sincere understanding “what is it in truth, what happened really, is it real or not?” had long been forgotten by me, whose places had been invaded by the mostly futile questions of fragile reasoning such as “what is the significance of that, why such people or nation were privileged in holy revelations etc”. Thank you

@Alex Ander The way I see it - There are repeated explicit statements over and over again that God is One. There are explicit statements by Jesus that he is separate and different and inferior to God. Then there are “hints” which, could have, been interpreted to mean something different from the above. One needs to be a professor to ‘interpret’ these “hints”. And many believe that if a person incorrectly interprets these “hints” which are contradictory to the explicit texts, then they will be cast into hell. People are expected by the creator to reject the explicit statements and pin their belief on interpretations of the hints by some clever people, and if they don’t, they will be punished. The Just and Fair creator would do this?? - Or maybe it might be possible that the creator wants people to follow the clear and explicit statements, ... and if a hint or vague statement is in contradiction to the explicit statement, then to only interpret the hint in line with the explicit and clear message. This is my humble view on this. May be wrong.

The Qur'an actually mentions, in the interpretation of the meaning that it confirms the injeel ( the Original), explains alot that the people of the book differed in and also reveals what they concealed. Depending on how much the bible has deviated from the Original text, we should find many parallels between the two Books.

Great video. I'm always left perplexed the way certain Christians attack the Islamic view of jesus and Islam on a whole. Do they read the Quran and why are they so offensive?. The Christian world was never monolithic in its early origins. There were many groups that had the same portrayal of Jesus. Begs the question really . Anyway this doesn't matter. Just after listening to what you said about the findings of scholars made me think. Thanks Paul.

The Islamic view of Jesus is misguided due to Muhammed's ignorance of the Bible. All the early Christians believed Jesus died on the cross for the sins of mankind, rose from the dead and ascended into heaven.

NO.. but you won't outsmart God with that creed on that Day!!

One other note: In the Didache (an adaptation of a Jewish booklet for new converts), very strikingly, Jesus is referred to in the prayers as a "servant" of God. The prayers are addressed to God ("the Father"), rather than to Jesus, and Jesus is referred to as a man who lived and served God. The Didache, at least the earliest versions of it, had a very low Christology, it it can even be called a "Christology" at all.

2- He is also mentioned in Abraham's revelation that he will come from the Gentiles after the destruction of the temple and he will rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem about 600 years after the destruction of the house by Titus after Jesus.
3- He is mentioned in the Book of Deuteronomy as the Prophet who resemble Moses and comes from the brothers of the Children of Israel {Ishmaelites} who does not speak from himself and God saves him.
4- He is mentioned in the Book of Daniel as the seal of prophecy that comes after the Messiah who will be cut off and the destruction of the Temple and removes the abomination of desolation from Jerusalem.
5- He is the servant of God whom Isaiah spoke of. It was reported by Isaiah that he would be in Mount Sela in Medina in the Arabian Peninsula. He will defeat the enemies from Kedar. Nebiot and Kedar the sons of Ishmael will be under his command.
6- Malachi said that he is the prophet whom God promised in mountain Horeb and prophesied that he would suddenly attend the Holy House in Jerusalem.
7- Christ before raising to heavens informed about the destruction of the temple and that he has a lot to say but the spirit of truth who will not talk from himself but what he hears from God will tell about everything and will stay till the day of judgement {Quran inspired by the holy spirit}. Also he told about the establishment of the abomination of Byzantine desolation.

the burning of the Holy House, says: “Say, [O Muhammad], "The Spirit of truth has brought it down from your Lord in truth to make firm those who believe and as guidance and good tidings to the Muslims” And it says: “The holy spirit has brought it down from your Lord with the truth to reassure the believers, and as a guide and good news for those who submit to God”

The Messianic hymn in Philippians 2 was not composed by Paul; rather it was already a hymn used in liturgical context. Yet it was affirming that "at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." In other words, Paul did not invent the idea that Christ is divine in nature. It was already in circulation in the first Christian community.

As Judaism and Christianity are derivative of earlier truths, Islam proves to be descendant. As with those religions founded by an avatar or leader long-anticipated by archetypal events in the stars, the religion of Muhammad appears to have been part of the Plan. In the Mandaean Book of John, we find a fascinating passage in which "Muhammad the Arab will be born, the adopted son, son of a forsaken son, the son of the adopted son, Ishmael."

You may also be interested to note that there are myriad overlaps between the early Jewish Christians and the essenes (not the Qumran sect, which was a splinter group). They both called referred to themselves as "ebionites" and to their faith practice as "the Way." They both espoused holiness, sharing of possessions, and non-violence, and both groups practiced baptismal rituals.
Of the Jews living in Judea and Galilee, those most likely to have been drawn to the message of Jesus would have included the essenes and those who had been baptized by John the Baptist, whose preaching was very essene-like (emphasis on personal, internal faith and holiness). Jewish Christianity was much more of an Essene-Christianity than it would have been a Pharasaic or Saddussean or Zealot-Christianity.

    • @robinstevenson6690
      @robinstevenson6690 Před 2 lety

Another way of putting it is that becoming a Christian in Judea at that time meant embracing "the Way" ( the basic values and two-ways (Didache) faith) of the essenes. That's why the early Christians called themselves "ebionites" - - which was what the essenes called themselves, and why they described their faith practice as "The Way."
When you think of the influence of early Jewish Christianity on Islam in that context, the jewish part of Jewish Christianity was essenism, and the holiness and devoutness of the essenes has obviously became an important aspect of both Christianity and Islam.
The essenes had certain things in common with the sufis of later generations. In fact, sufism may be the purest and most essential form of Islam, much like essene-Christianity may be the purest and most essential form of Christianity.

So according to the koran, the Messiah was not crucified, did not rise from the dead, and did not meet with the Apostles. So James must have lied to Paul when they met in Jerusalem. Paul had seen visions of the Messiah and believed him. Peter was also lying and went to Rome and started the new religion with the help of Paul. Where they both died as martyrs to protect the lie. Interesting.

But righteous is he who believes in God, and the Last Day, and the angels, and the Scripture, and the prophets. Who gives money, though dear, to near relatives, and orphans, and the needy, and the homeless, and the beggars, and for the freeing of slaves; those who perform the prayers, and pay the obligatory charity, and fulfill their promise when they promise, and patiently persevere in the face of persecution, hardship, and in the time of conflict. These are the sincere; these are the pious.

O believers! Stand up for Allah, as Jesus, son of Mary, asked the disciples, “Who will stand up with me for Allah?” The disciples replied, “We will stand up for Allah.” Then a group from the Children of Israel believed while another disbelieved. We then supported the believers against their enemies, so they prevailed.

    Dear Brother,
Sura Ali Imran, verse 55: Remember˺ when Allah said, “O Jesus! I will take you and raise you up to Myself. I will deliver you from those who disbelieve, and elevate your followers above the disbelievers until the Day of Judgment. Then to Me you will ˹all˺ return, and I will settle all your disputes.
God SWT in the Qur'an is saying that those who follow Jesus' (peace be upon him) teachings until judgement day (i.e. including thru the advent of Islam to the last day) will be elevated by God himself. This means that Muslim teaching embodies the teachings of Jesus (PBUH), i.e., it is another way of saying that Jesus should be followed and indeed is being followed by practicing the revelation in the Qur'an. This is the most striking ayat I try to share with Christians who would love to follow Jesus but don't see how to, given the Pauline version of Christianity practiced by churches.

In what ever scriptures you read even in Veda of Hinduism, god clearly said that He has no image. In christianity, god said that He has no image but with the coming of Jesus, christians made Jesus as god with an image..Why man need god image desperately when worship their god whereas god said He has no image. Its because of human behaviour which they need something that can be seen and talk to, face to face physically.
In Islam, its a shirk to worship a physical or imagination of god like christians visualize the image of Jesus. When worship,.we never create image of god and kaaba is only the direction.where we should face when worship god.

As for parallels, these are no surprise. Take a scholar who has sympathies for the philosophical aspects of Islam and add a dash of Dan Brown and you end up with, well, a scholarly book like this.

You may believe that Jewish Christianity went extinct 1,500 years ago, but it didn't. There were active St. Thomas (Mar Thoma) Jewish Christian churches when the Portuguese arrived in India in the 16th c. Even today, they retain many of the Jewish Christian elements in their faith, as do the Ethiopian (Tawahedo) Christians. There are other examples, as well, e.g., in the "Oriental Orthodox" faiths.
Moreover, just as there have always been "god fearers" among the gentiles who have attended synagogues, there have always been Jews who have revered Jesus and/or practiced a faith that include a mixture of Christian and Judaic elements, whether they did so privately, or whether they attended various churches through the centuries.
Also, note that there have long been people who've called themselves "red letter Christians," because their faith is based on the words of Jesus (printed in red in their bibles), rather on those of the evangelists or the apostles. Further, there are non-denominational Christians who consider themselves "first century Christians," because they're trying to live as the earliest followers of Jesus and John the Baptist did. These are not technically Jewish Christians, but the Christian aspect of their faith is quite similar.

Neither Jesus nor James (his brother) sought to establish a ‘dynasty’. Jesus never married and never had children - as even Islam teaches - thus Jesus could not have been seeking to establish a ‘dynasty’ that would be dependant upon physical generation. As for James, I am not aware that he ever married and had children - though I could be mistaken. You, Paul Williams, only read and quote the ‘research’ done by others - can you not think for yourself?
