He is probably best remembered for his comedic role as Sergeant Arthur Wilson in the BBC television situation comedy Dad's Army (1968-1977). A self-confessed "jobbing actor",[2] Le Mesurier appeared in more than 120 films across a range of genres, normally in smaller supporting parts.

Thank you for a very moving story of his life and lost loves. A thoroughly nice man who people treated badly
Strangely enough I found out that where I lived near Heathrow was the last resting place of Tony Hancock who I loved as a comedian. It took a while to find his little stone as he was cremated, it took me about 40 mins before I found it partially hidden under a lot of garden waste. I cleaned it up and went round every month or two to make sure it wasn’t overgrown or spiked in any way. He was buried with his mother whom he loved. He is buried approx 3 miles from one of Heathrow’s main runways in a delightful little graveyard. I have moved from London now so never get to visit the grave anymore

Hello Steve, I think it just enjoyed the music in the alcohol and why not life is short. It was a lovely man. Thank you, Alan

John would have been a 'very credible' Captain Mainwaring i think! That aside what an interesting, though ultimately tragic life this 'gentleman' had!

I'm a bit confused... You said he died at the age of 71... But the magazine article says he was 90 when he died

Kim must have been a very troubled lad, they say he died of a accidental overdose, his date of death of the 6th October 1991 was the 11th anniversary of Hatties death RIP
Ps I never knew I shared a birthday with John, obviously not the same year or I'd be looking well for 111

My late mother used to be a maid in a house in the late 50s for the Riley Smith family in Sussex and said John Le Mesuier came one evening to visit and was a very rude and arrogant man to the staff. As was Jimmy Edwards

What a contrasting report. Interesting though. I suppose everybody has bad moments. Everything I've ever heard was complementary regarding his character but thank you for that. Alan

What a sad story, feel sorry for him. Maybe the reason why guys tried it on with his wifes is because they new he wouldnt retaliate, gave them the green light, and maybe the wifes were looking for reassurance that he did love them by warning them to keep away. But he did the opposite. ! Being brought up with a mother and father that were dyfunctional and didnt show any love i think had something to do with it. !
