  • Did you know that John Le Mesurier and Hattie Jacques took a third lover into their marriage and that this third lover is what caused their marriage to end in divorce in 1965? For many years following their 1949 wedding, John Le Mesurier and Hattie Jacques were happily married. This was before either celebrity became famous, with John later becoming known for such roles as the character of Sergeant Arthur Wilson on the television show Dad’s Army and Hattie becoming known for her various roles in the Carry On series of films. Sadly, the marriage wasn’t meant to last. Though John tried his best to make the marriage work, Hattie fell in love with another man and the actor eventually couldn’t take it anymore. Following their 1965 divorce, Hattie never remarried and lived a relatively tragic life leading up to her death in 1980. John died a few years later, in 1983.

When John and Hattie met during the late 1940s, John was going through the process of divorcing his first wife. John and Hattie would then go on to be happily married for over a decade before Hattie fell in love with another man in 1962. That other man was named John Schofield. Hattie was insecure throughout her life as a result of her weight, and she was said to have required a good deal of flattery to get through the day. While John Le Mesurier wasn’t adept at this kind of flattery, Schofield certainly was. However, it seems that Schofield’s flatter wasn’t entirely in good faith.
John tried to allow his wife to have her new lover, but he couldn’t take having a second man in his house. John and Hattie divorced in 1965. After the divorce, Hattie had her heart broken by Schofield and was never the same. Join Facts Verse as we explore how cheating on John Le Mesurier drove Hattie Jacques off the rails.

You really need to do better research. John & Joan were not happily married! Just a short time after they married she had an affair with Tony Hancock subsequently leaving leaving John to whom she returned due to Hancock's violence & drinking She was going back to Hancock and was intending to move to Australia with him but he died!

I remember that Le Mesurier was asked if he was angry with Hancock over the affair and he said no, he’s a good friend of mine.

Phonetically it is pronounced Jayks and it was Hattie who drove John off the so called rails (not a good title) and it was Hattie's lover not John's (took a third lover into their marriage) so the title is as usual from Americans unfounded and wrong.

If you're going to do a UK version, at least check pronunciations of names first.

It's futile. They can't pronounce any UK placename correctly.
