- Josephine Edwina "Hattie" Jacques (/dʒeɪks/ 7 February 1922 - 6 October 1980) was an English comedy actress of stage, radio and screen. She was a regular of the Carry On films in which she typically played strict, no-nonsense characters, and was also a prolific television and radio performer.
I feel so blessed that she was my mother in law . I fell madly in love with her the moment we first spoke on the phone from America when her son Robin & I (also named Robin) called her to tell her we were getting married . The warmth just oozed from her . I can only say that being part of this family was one of the greatest gifts I have ever been given and i will cherish till i join them all in the hereafter 🙏💓🌸

@@jacksugden8190 I am 54 and been in the UK 53 years and virtually lived all my life here. I grew up as a kid loving the carry on films and the great comedy period of the 70's. BLESS THIS HOUSE, RISING DAMP, PORRIDGE, GEORGE AND MILDRED, etc. Hattie was a unique talent and sadly died the same year as YOOTHA JOYCE who was only 53. RIP to them both, and I loved Benny Hill, Dick Emery and Frankie Howerd amongst other greats like the TWO RONNIES and KEN DODD who was my favourite, not forgetting the old black and white films of STAN LAUREL a Macunian who teamed up with Oliver Hardy, also Charlie Chaplin, etc. RIP to them all.

@@charlieminaj2 Good for you, but show the LAUREL & HARDY films too, because STAN was English and a multi talented man too. A pioneer in his era, but still loved and admired today. There is a Laurel and Hardy Museum in Kendal up north, the only one of its kind and I intend to visit one day. Oliver Hardy in 1957 or 1958 if my memory serves me right. Stan died in February 1965 3 months before I was born. I love comedy and it makes no difference what our colour, sexuality, nationality, age, gender, etc, I love all types of comedians. KEN DODD has to be m favourite. He was so versatile. A singer in the 60's who knocked THE BEATLES off number 1, and then created the DIDDY MEN and his TICKLING STICK, before doing stand up comedy, and also did Vaudeville comedy, which I love, from a very noble era. His memory was phenomenal. He would stand on stage for several hours at a time, and keep rolling off hundreds of jokes, even up until the end when he was nearly 90. I am lucky if I can remember 6 jokes in a row. Watched his funeral on CZcams, and it was very emotional and I cried. The people of people cheered him when they carried him out of the church on his final journey. I also loved the AN AUDIENCE WITH KEN DODD, and AN AUDIENCE with other celebs ! You can watch anything on CZcams, and remember the past and present. Wonderful memories. RIP to all the great comedians from the past, and we can watch their talent on CZcams and remember the fond memories which no one can take away from us. x

One thing I recall about Hattie, yes she was a large lady, however, herself and Oliver Hardy had one thing in common. When they moved they were light as a feather with both poise and grace. Indeed it once said of "Matron" she was like a Spanish galleon in full sail. Excellent actress.

I love the description of her home as 'a place of abundance' (I would love a home like that!) and her lodger's memory of her cooking breakfast at the stove in a taffeta ball gown! I think it must have been quite something to call Hattie a friend. A magical lady.

But who could possibly do that incredible, magical, powerfully charismatic lady and star full credit? She was very special, and a total one-off.

Perhaps the nicest of people I NEVER got to meet in person. I was 24 when she died.
Everyone I've ever met (without a single exception) who knew Hattie speak of her warmth and generosity.
Bob Monkhouse mentions Patricia Hayes who I did get to meet; also very sady missed. I have fond memories of meeting Pat (Patty) Coombs too.
Sadly, they are all of a generation we have lost. It's great that CZcams can now preserve such memories.
I was channel surfing and came across the movie Mother Riley Meets the Vampire and caught a glimpse of a woman with the most wonderful smile and beautiful eyes.i went to my phone to find out who this gorgeous woman was. I watched endless clips of her and each performance was great. It’s 2020 Hattie,40 years after your passing and your still mesmerizing the men with your talent and beauty
I have always felt that Ms Jacques was undervalued. There are occasional scenes in the Carry On films where you could see what a great actor she really was. As Bob Monkhouse said, the people who mattered in the business could not see past her size, and, in my opinion, as a result, we lost a great character actor.
I think you are spot on! All women are primarily judged on their looks and that goes double for women in the public eye. Hattie's size typecast her as the fat lady who was the butt of the joke. Her roles in the Carry Ons were horribly insulting at times.
I agree with the late, great Bob Monkhouse, who spoke about her here with such warmth. Her role In Sykes made the most of her natural talent, because she was allowed to create a believable character who was not just there to be the funny fat lady. Hattie had great warmth and charm when it was allowed to shine through.

Carry on was the first movie I ever saw. Sitting in the Salvation Army hall on wooden benches with hundreds of kids from the neighbourhood laughing our heads off. Truly unforgettable! Same with Sydney James, Kenneth Moore etc!

John and Hatties son Robin (R.I.P)...was a really tlented Guitarist....Toured The World with many famous artists....For many year he was Lead Guitar and best friend of Johny Hallyday (French Legend) and toured around the world....A Gentleman and superb musician.....!!!!!!!
She was simply a fabulous, classy, sexy funny lady. I loved her in Hancock's Half Hour and Sykes. That Voice... topped off her beauty. Wonderful tribute.

I’ve always been fascinated by this beautiful lady Hattie Jakes. She appeared to me to be a beautiful soul inside and out such, a kind, caring lady what a blessing she must’ve been to her family friends and certainly to theWorld.
I know that her one of her closest friends was Joan Sims. what a wonderful friendship they must’ve shared and the laughter you can just imagine it.
Growing up in the 1990s I loved the Carry On Films and my two favourites were Hattie Jacques and Kenneth Williams. I never once laughed at Hattie because of her size, I laughed at her comic ability as an actress and her interactions with Kenneth, Sid James, Charles Hawtrey were brilliant. I also loved watching her with Eric Sykes who apart from the one little snippet about the dating ad featured here never made reference to Hatties weight in 17 years. She was a very unique looking woman and I thought her range of ability helped make her stand out. She also comes across from those who knew her as saintly like, almost like the Peter Cushing of comedy. The John Schofield relationship was not ideal and I'm sure she didn't want to hurt an equal Saint in John LeMes but she fell in love with a man who made her feel sexy, and passionate and wanted as someone who clearly suffered from low self esteem.
A very fair summary, thank you for your humanity. Hattie gets a lot of flak for cheating on John, but the marriage was clearly over by the time she met the charming Mr Schofield who swept her off her feet.
There are reports her lover was violent to her, which breaks my heart. And ultimately, he broke hers. He sounds like what we would call today a narcissistic abuser.
I loved your description of Hattie as 'the Peter Cushing of comedy'. She was a wonderful, loving and loyal friend and adored by those who knew her best. That's what counts, at the end of it all.

That was a classic episode. I was too young to hear Hancock' Half Hour when it was originally broadcast but BBC 4 Extra re broadcasts them and that episode is my favourite.

John Le Messurier was a perfect gentleman and deserved better although he never had a bad word to say about his philandering wife.
She fell in love with another man...I wouldn't call that philandering. I saw in another documentary that one of the last things she admitted was that the biggest mistake in her life was leaving John. Human beings are complex. Nothing is as it seems. I think she was a good woman, who followed her heart. I also believe John forgave her and loved her too until his dying day. That's life.

Hattie was very feminine, with great charisma and a smile that lit up the room. Apparently she was a wonderfully kind and loyal friend. I envy those who knew her, and have memories of popping into her flat and getting fed cups of tea and bacon sandwiches, her speciality. She was a wonderful hostess. Imagine Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, and Hattie fussing over you in a paper hat - magical!

When I was little I remember asking my dad if Hattie and Eric Sykes were really brother and sister! My dad said "Well yes, they do look very much alike..." I realised from his tone of voice that they weren't!
I have the carry on films, love her. One scene is where she says, to Babs being examined by Jim Dale, do you have a fever, and Jim dale turns round and says ho yes. I even have some carry on mugs. I have Sid, , Hattie and Charles and Barbara.
She lived life to the fullest but as they say, "You live by the sword, You die by the sword."
