  • Danny La Rue, OBE (born Daniel Patrick Carroll, 26 July 1927 - 31 May 2009) was an Irish-born English singer and entertainer, known particularly in stage and theatre for his singing and cross-dressing performances.
Among his celebrity impersonations were Elizabeth Taylor, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Judy Garland, Margot Fonteyn, Marlene Dietrich and Margaret Thatcher. At one point he had his own nightclub in Hanover Square, and also performed on London's West End. In the 1960s he was among Britain's highest-paid entertainers.
In 1968 his version of "On Mother Kelly's Doorstep" reached number 33 in the UK singles chart; La Rue later adopted the song as his theme tune
This documentary examines his life and career with interviews from some of his closest friends; from rags to riches and back again when he lost his vast fortune. From humble beginnings to fisticuffs with Princess Margaret, he did the lot....singer, dancer, entertainer and actor...he dazzled audience across the country with his fantastic figure, sparkling costumes, comedy and on stage timing.
Look out for rare live footage of one of Danny´s greatest understudies...Tommy Osborne on my playlist "Panto Performances" at Vaudeville Funtimes • Panto performances
Look out for my radio interview from the 90s where Paul James, Chubby Oates and Dennis Gilding (also Danny´s understudy) discuss La Rue and many other fabulous entertainers from the variety world gone by.... • Chubby Oates, Dennis G...
Look out for my book written in 1966 by Arthur (Chubby) Oates and Chris Shaw..."A Pictorial History on the Art of female Impersonation"... • "A Pictorial History o... ...accompanied by music from some unforgettable performers; Reg Stone, Wilkie Bard, Ella Shields, Douglas Byng and Hetty King.

We've had a movie about Liberace, we've had a movie about Elton John, we've had a movie about Freddy Mercury ....... why hasn't anyone made a movie about Danny La Rue.
How great would that move be, full of heart and soul, laughs and tears, a celebration of his wonderful career and life.

In 1978 Danny and Michael Aspell were judges on the talent show New Faces when I was on; Danny was very complimentary and gave me high points that took my score way above the norm; I turned that into a showbiz career spanning 45 years, only just recently retiring, I thank them both for giving me that leg up the ladder.

I was a child invited up on stage at the London Palladium when Danny was starring in a Christmas pantomime in the late 60s.
For a 7 or 8 year old, this was both daunting, and incredibly exciting. He was so kind, put me at my ease, gave me a hug, and it’s an experience I’ve cherished all these years. What a wonderful human being!

It's an injustice to witness how Danny La Rue has fallen from public memory in recent years. He was a major star, one of the greatest female impersonators of all time. Decades before Ru Paul Charles burst onto the scene Danny was a regular on TV and blazed a trail for all who would follow including Lily Savage, Hinge & Bracket and so many more. Ru Pauls Drag Race has almost destroyed the long established traditional Drag culture similar to how Amazon & Macdonalds have steam rolled across the world. We are in danger of losing so much of our history and it must be reclaimed before its too late.

I remember as a child watching him on TV. My parents loved him, I remember. We lived in south London then and they often went up to the West End to shows and I'm pretty sure they could have gone to see him in some show or other. His business manager and partner who had been so astute with his money somehow lost the plot with the scammers, and I wonder how that happened. I found it very sad that he lost everything and was forced to work until almost the end. He will always be remembered.

Because men of that era were comfortable thinking it was all show business and that he was a man at the end of the day just doing a bit. The makeup and dresses and wigs went away when the show was over but the eyebrow thing was just too "feminine" and "permanent". It really was a different world and generation.

Julian Eltinge was the biggest drag star ever, back in the early 1900's, and men would beat the crap out you if you said he was queer (though of course he was). I had that from my old vocal coach and ragtime pianist who was around and working nightclubs at the time.

@maxlinder5262 Unfortunately, unlike Elton John and Freddie Mercury, Danny LaRue was queercentric without the latter-day legend. Oh, he was and is remembered, and fondly too, but his superstar status has faded over the years. Simply put, the boys with the lolly aren't prepared to shell out to make a movie about a personality which may not 'take'. Even if it did, but they don't want to take the risk. Pity.
