Could the $300 Shimano Saragosa SW-A really be better than it's $1000 cousin, the Shimano Stella SW? In today's full review of the Shimano Saragosa I cover that question and conduct a full tear down/ analysis of the Saragosa, as well as show how the Shimano Saragosa SW performs when fished under harsh conditions! This teardown and full real world review discusses the pros and cons of the Saragosa and shows if the Saragosa is worth the money $. I compare and contrast this 2020 model with it's 2014 predecessor as well as the 2019 Stella SW. Buckle up because this reel review has tons of information from the Saragosa's max drag, to the benefits of its locomotive oscillation.

Absolutely love your reviews, very thorough and you share personal experience along with your technical understanding of fishing reels. Keep up the great work!
Awesome review, you and Tackle Advisors are the reason I use them. Great reel!
Thank you for all the work you put in!
I'll take 3 Gosa's and $100 in my pocket over 1 Stella every time. Great review.
Agree. But id take a saltiga over any shimano, especially a daiwa dogfight with 66 lbs of drag! And im getting a accurate any day. The ultimate reel.
All day, everyday!😂😂😂
i'll take 5 stradics!
@@Ghost-sz7uo lol same here!
@@stripervince1 and just break your line roller bearing and the main gear itself. 😂😂😂
Thank Ypu - awesome review!!!
Subscribed. The most detail oriented reel breakdown of all time.
New to surfing fishing and equipment, found this and your other reviews very helpful. Thanks!
Always the best review to watch!
Very informative and detailed wise!
FISH ON! TIGHT LINES!
Fantastic review. You are very thorough! And concise. I learned quite a bit for not being familiar with the brand or the reels construction.
This was a great review. Actually recently purchased a new SW8000 at the Pacific Outdoors show in Costa Mesa over the weekend. Have yet to try it out. Thanks for the excellent video Ryan!
Thank you so much for the video. Super informative. And make me to make a decision super easy. I'm going for Saragosa. Thank you.
Solid honest review Ryan. You covered a bunch just from watching the videos of you catching a wide variety of fish. I've actually talked on the surf about what you have conquered with this reel which was impressive to say the least for $300. The parts and service from shimano is a huge deal breaker in its class.
I haven’t had to deal with Shimano Customer Service in a few years but in the past they were better than the competition (in my limited experience)
Shimano serviced my old stella for $15.00. Customer service is amazing!
Great review and well explained! Cheers from New Zealand 🇳🇿! Thank you 😀
Thanks for watching 🍻
😳I’m sure I could take it all apart.
Putting it back together is another story. Such an impressive display of fishing knowledge, mechanical skills, and product knowledge.
A lot to learn here besides reel comparison.
Thank you for watching!
@@RyanMorie Your videos are fantastic ! Ryan keep it up really ! I have a question to ask, what would you put on the Palms xxh106 ? A saragosa 8000 or 14 000 ? Also a 4500hs slammer iv or 6500hs slammer iv ?
Hey, I love how you break the reel down and show the components. I'm terrified about taking my reels apart. I think you sold me. Next reel I'm looking at will be the Saragosa SW. I like this type of video. Keep it up.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching 🍻
@@RyanMorie just got the SW18000HG.. yet to use it
Love the tackle reviews! I'm a huge tackle nerd and watch/read whatever I can on reels like like. I even bought a saltiga expedition and a saragosa SWA 10k after your videos lol Keep up the great content
Wow that’s pretty cool to hear! Thanks for watching my friend 🍻
Jiss dude... a review with a disassembly 😱 insane amount of effort put into it... i really enjoyed it and could be helpful with the disassembly part as well... Awesome vid
Thank you! Definitely a lot of work but I want to make the best videos I can 🤙🏼🍻
Excellent review/comparison, Ryan 👌
Thanks for watching!
Awesome thanks for a great review!
Great review. Thank you.
Thanks for a very convincing review/comparison
on Saragosa SW-A and Stella spinning reels.
Especially appreciated you pointing out the
anti=reverse being found in the 18000 models
and above.

Tight Lines...
Thanks for watching! 🍻
good review, thank you Ryan
Great review! The taking apart part is awesome (tackle advisors style). What I didn't like is that your room was a bit on the dark side, extra light would be nice. Other than that a perfect review and would love to see more of these. Just ordered a 14000 Gossa btw ...
Very impressive review and review style. I am a shimano guy and have been for many years. I personally find the quality of the Stradic, Ultegra XTD, Saragosa and Spheros very good for the price point and would much rather have 3 or 4 reels for my $1000. I would be one that would enjoy watching you put that Saragosa back together!!
There’d be way too many curse words involved as I put it back together 🤣🤣🤣
Excellent review from an owner of both vintage blue FA series Stellas and other mid & high end Shimano SW spinners.
Great review,thanks.I bought the Saragosa👍Cheers🐟🎣
Hi there
I subscribed because you decided me on my next purchase and you did a great job 👍
Thanks
Happy to here it! Welcome aboard!
Wow , that’s a true review from unbiased n unsponsered guy , i’d take ur words over AH anytime , i have almost all shimano reels 3 stellas down to sonora , durable as hell n i’m tough on my gears , casting allday long 7:10 hrs is nothing but tough tasks for any spinning reel to stand for . Stella is the real king but yes it is way expensive ,agaiin so the saltiga and they wont going to reduce their price down as long as we keep buy them.
Great review.
Solid review and honest. One of the best reels I own and you will never have to worry because it’s just that well made. I don’t own a Stella but I own the tranx 500 and a Trinidad and you definitely get what you pay for from shimano. The best about shimano is if you do need it fixed they’re warranty is send it in and you get it back brand new. Literally I took my Calcutta in and the just gave me a new one. It does help to live in Orange County since there in Irvine
Nice review. I never own a Gosa before but a HG is my preference gear ratio too.
thank you, so useful !!!
Killer review buddy thank
Thanks for watching!
Love your reviews man you are definitely 1 of the best on CZcams
Thank you!
I think a key thing to consider is usage. If you are going to be beating the crap out of the reel using it on shore etc, the Stella makes sense. I am purchasing the gosa for tuna jigging off LI where 80% of our time is spent trolling. Great video Ryan!
Just sub'd from the islands of Palau. Learn alot from your vids. Thanx✌🏾🌊🇵🇼
bought 3 of the 10,000's dont have them yet, was between penn slammer and the gossa's
Nice review mate, good on you for paying respects to maestro Alan Hawk.
Thanks for watching Sir! 🍻
Great review!! do you know where is the clicking system for the Gosa located? mines got silent after fighting a shark for hours.
What rod is that you are holding at about 5mins into the video? Looks sweet! Thanks for your reviews! I find them very informative!
Hi,
Great video and also great knowledge.
I have a Daiwa BG Mq 6000 and a Shimano Saragosa 6000 in front of me and tried to make it out which one is better. Now I know which one I'll send back. 😅
Thank you a lot. Tight lines.
Hi Ryan, awesome vids.. what rod would you recommend for the surf for this gosa 8k?
What rod did you have the reel on for the review?
My favorite offshore Shimano reel is actually the TwinPower. I've owned Stella's but the TwinPower feels more solid. It's definitely heavier but it feels stronger.
It does feel good but technically it's not stronger than a Gosa. The old Stella (SWA, SWB) is a totally different reel, the SWC isn't. The rotor and the anti reverse of the older Stellas play in a different league. Now only the Makaira Spinning and the Saltiga are true big game spinners in current production.
Great video
Good review ? No. It's a terrific review ! I'm in the market for a spinning reel and this video has helped me immensely. I have looked at the Stella and was shocked when I saw the price tag. I don't see that as a fair trade for my money. Some folks would think the price as a good value and God bless them. I wonder what the odds are regarding total sales of each reel. 10-1, 5-1, 20-1? Anyway thank you for your effort. BTW I think Alan Hawk is a wonderful writer and smart guy. God Bless.
Absolute amazing review. Wow. The detail! Still debating on a 4 or 5000 gosa or a van staal 50. Gonna be for river/ lake stripers
Honestly the VR50 is super nice but not necessary.
@@RyanMorie well it’s beautiful, machined, simple, waterproof (which i dont care im using it in fresh and it wont be swimming) has a great drag and line capacity and is super lightweight. BUT, made in china bothers me. Im probably goin for a saltiga 4500
They don’t have a 4000 m8 only starts at 5000
@@danielmallon5326 yes I meant to put 5000 or 6000. Didn't proofread. My bad
Spot on
Ryan, what pound test line are you running on this reel? Do you spool it all with the main line, or do you put a backing on it?
This is very great 👍 video thank you very much.
To fish well you need to be confident you have an advantage on the fish, this is what keeps you concentrating on your game from 1st to last cast of the day, the knowing if a fish comes by you know how and have what it takes to catch it, this advantage, this confidence you build in yourself comes from either or both your knowledge and technique and from having good gear, confidence comes at a high price for some, in this times more expensive is better, not all people look anymore at value for money, who knows if they came with something much more expensive than Stella they might sell like mini bread loafs. Saragosa priced to sell, Stella priced to make larger profit on smaller numbers. Not all my reels are sealed however I rarely have issues with salt and corrosion. (apart from BG's sticky drag knob and Stradic's noisy roller guides) a good rinse and once a year open clean and grease keeps them going forever. Some sites sell all wearable parts which are easy to replace. I must say that having boat in Florida fishing all year round brings maintenance time higher once you gone through the Centaur slow pitch jigging, Saragosa sw speed jigging, the BG's live bait surface , the Speedmaster's wrecks fishing , the Stradic FJ 8000 (rare) surface stick bait and popping reels, the Tyrnos trolling reels, the Stradic FI (yes still going strong) bass fishing, new Stradic SW shore fishing, add to that I like to have at least a couple so I can take along friends who don't have thier own gear, add to that the odd reels picked up here and there as travel souvenirs and piled in the big box with hundreds of unused untested lures for which you always think you found them the perfect job until you purchase the appropriate reel for the job, plus soon I hope the deep drop reels which luckily will also serve as kite reels, once you've done them all a year has passed and you can start again from beginning. Full time job...haha It seems I am very much a 200 to 300$ reel king of guy, I think for what fish we have here most shimano's mid-range do the job no problem and for long time. The BG's are my cheapest but I like that on the 5000 at 100 bucks you can put a lot of line which is great for sailfish, I am thinking the new Saragosa's should replace them soon. I should think of something else, real obsession...
Love the review really one of a kind information on the gosa! Would you do a review on the Penn slammer 4 next??
facts
Nice review, you nailed it. On Shimano and Daiwa’s website they talk about Hagane gear blah blah to lure people money. I have 10 years old reel and they still perform. I believe these companies are enjoying fisher man money more than actual fisher man enjoying catching fish. Only few people catch good fish and not all but every one spends a lot of money on buying latest and greatest rods and reels.
I have both Saragosa and 2015 Stella SW1000SZ. They both have served me well. After the Stella brings in a 100lb yft I get frustrating bail closer on the following cast. Now I know why.. but no issues with stopping them from top water casting. However the Gosa gets really hot when almost, I mean almost getting spooled, but no premature flip bail. I need durability out there on the north Pacific Both reels has never been dunked but a simple wash and wipe down after use and stored there in warm climate I used them every 4-6months for 4 years on my return. serviced twice for re greasing and bail trip/flexing. looking at Penn slammer IV Don't want to break my arm. Any idea the weight on the 6500h.(hidden files)Why dont they come with beveled spool. No brainer1!!!!! I dont need all that friction in my life.
Thanks for the video & for the in depth description of my next reel. Just one question..what is the brand of that SURF ROD you are using with the saragosa sw in this video? It looks a very sweet set-up! Thanks again!!
It’s a custom rod built by Juno Bait in Juno Beach, Florida. Blank is a Phenix Black Diamond Hybrid 20-50lb 9’2”
@@RyanMorie
Thank you for the quick reply! I heard a lot of good things with Phenix blanks. Too bad we dont have that here in MI. Will watch more of your vidz & u got a new subscriber! Thanks again!
Love my spheros saragosa and the 2021 twin power sw 🤙🤙🤙
I love how you casually go out to test it by catching trophy fish! I just got my 25K in the mail, going to test it out in Destin this weekend, pretty stoked!
hey man I'm thinking about buying the saragosa but the reviews I see aren't that good with people getting used/broken reels, did the reel work out for you?
@@Richard-rr6ze you mean the wobble? Looks like they fixed it! I saw some reviews about that. No issues here.
@@BodaciousBohannon people said they had issues with the wobble, it was damaged, looked like it was used before ect where did you buy yours at?
@@Richard-rr6ze Hey sorry man, I woke up to use the bathroom and quickly replied to that comment. I got mine from BassPro, strictly for the points and whatnot. What size are you thinking of going with? I went all out on the 25K, eventually I was going to need it, but it is quite large. I'll probably get one or two more in the 4500-5000 range, or the new Shimano Twin Power. Also those vanfords replaced the very popular CI4 and those have amazing reviews, I hope to grab one of those sometime in the future. Let me know what you decide on!
What can you upgrade on the reel to make it like a Stella? Maybe a video of certain upgrades you can do to the reel to make it closer to the Stella. Ie changing to a bearing in the knob…
What is the brand length and action of the rod u had on the gosa
I am loving Stella sw ❤❤❤ I am having Stella sw 4000 hg very nice fishing for my life ❤❤❤
Hello Ryan , what size rod , also a good rod go well and balance with that Saragosa SW. 6000 and TY for sharing
What kind of rod is that, that you use when testing the drag and castabillity
Great video. What rod and braid line do you recommend to pair with the saragosa 6000? I was thinking the Nexus Jigging World shadow surf rod with 30 to 40 lbs braid line. Would love to know your opinions/suggestions...
What rod did you end up getting
The 2008 Stella SWA did have the all metal anti reverse already and I believe even the 2001 FA. The anti reverse in the SWC, Saragosa, Spheros, Twin power, and even many recently produced budget reels was in the 1998 and maybe even the first 1993 Stella.
It only makes a difference in high drag uses, cause both types live extremely long, the difference is simply that while both last extremely long extremely long when fished within they're healthy range, it's that range of drag pressure. The anti reverse in the old Stella(very similar to the anti reverse in the Saltiga and Makaira) has an almost unlimited range while the one in the new Stella, Saragosa etc. Is much more limited. Point is that both types will perform identically (even though the one with the plastic housing feels kinda spungy and less solid) until the lesser one is pushed to, or beyond it's limits, then the all metal system will be superior since it's stronger. BTW: The two anti reverse systems are basically the same, both use metal (SS) break cylinders and metal (SS)springs which won't wear out like the standard plastic V springs. The difference between the two anti reverse systems we are talkin' about here is that the all metal anti reverse has an metal frame which is directly fitted into the reels frame (plastic in the Gosa, metal in the Stella) while the cheaper version has a plastic housing which is simply screwed down to the frame of the reel. Again, both systems work the same, but one has an extremely solid connection without any weak points and the other is simpler and cheaper but just as effective as long you don't push it too far. This is also why the new Stella has a lesser drag output then the old ones (real drag, shimanos claims are rubbish)
For those who have a Daiwa BG 8000 for heavy fishing, what advantages would I have over the Saragosa? Nice review man! 🤜🤛
this review just sold me on a new saragosa
I think it’s definitely a good value compared to the competition!
Like and subscribed BUT let me say why it was ALMOST a great video. First, I was guessing the entire time if this was a 10,000 size reel. I never saw it on the spool and you never mentioned the size. I assume it was because you did mention the gear ratio. I really did like the video but if you could confirm your rod and reel setup that you had paired in the video I would appreciate it very much. Thanks and I look forward to more
Saragosa for the win. Never lets me down.
Ryan, very informative video. I just purchased the Sargussa 18000 HG… I will use it for pitching , flat line and drop to the bottom from time to time. I fish in South fla. Wahoo, mahi and mutton. How would you spool?
I’d fish it with 65lb braid. It’ll probably fit around 550 yards. You can add a top-shot of varying size monofilament depending on the situation. (Connect your braid to your mini top-shot with an FG knot for best results)
Having a 6000 for micro jigging and dead baiting domersals, a 10,000 for jigging pelagic‘s and a 20,000 for live baiting. All for less than the price of one Stella option, I’ll go the Gosa any day of the week! Awesome review mate!
6000 for microjigging, I know people that caught 60kg bluefin on 6000
@@hldemi_fishing agreed mate the 6000 is a beast of a real but I have had some interesting bi catches micro jigging and dead baiting including big kingfish and blue groper I prefer to have the guts of the 6000 in case I need it

What are the specs on that rod? I am very interested in which guides it has and the distance from reel to stripper guide. I have been having a hard time laying out my custom rod to eliminate line slap with a saragosa 18000.
Hi, I need to choose between saragosa 14k or 18k for popping in maldives. What to choose?
Hey quick question on this reel, is there a small gap between the handle and the reel where it screws in? Thank you
Can you change the rotor on this with the aluminum rotor ? I’d the 8000 or 10000 size spool interchangeable on the 6000 Saragosa?
Love the gosa, bought the 6k for light jigging here at Qatar. More than enough, can you do the same on the 2021 Shimano Twinpower SW? Many Thanks! Tight Lines!
What is a good rod for the Saragossa for stripe bass and blue fish so like 10-40lbs
I’d love to see a review of some smaller reels like the Diawa ballistic MQ or Penn Clash II
I should also clarify I’m a fellow Florida fisherman, I just torture myself with using 2500/3000 sized reels for majority of my fishing. I am primarily a shore based fisherman and I’ll walk miles of beach in naples and cast all day so the smaller reels take away some muscle fatigue
@@Drpepperkiller1017 i had both casting all day. Clash failed less than under a year but the slammer 3 3500 still going strong for 2 years now. Shimano Vanford gets my vote vs Ballistic or Ballistic MQ. And if i will be wade fishing as well i might give Saltist MQ 2k or 3k a try.
Can you do a video on the Twin power
What is the beach rod used with the Saragosa 10000?
how many meter line u spool on it...and what daimeter?
great review! thanks! I am just before buying...
It’s so hard to choose when it comes to giant blue fin tuna cause once you out there and hooked up you want to have the confidence in your reel to get the job done and not being able to catch fish side by side with each reel how does one choose
Drag clicker sound on my gosa 5000 is not same after catch tuna 17kg. Any idea?
Can you install the crank handle on the right side on a Saragosa sw10000? All the pictures i saw, the crank handle is installed oh the left side. thanks
anyone know if the new SWA 25,000 Spools fits the older SRG 25,000 reel
what rod did you have it paired to?
Is this reel prone to premature bail closer when casting heavy heavy lures on 10.6 to 11 foot rods ???....Thank You. Great Video.
Not likely! It’s a manual bail and it has a rubber ring under the rotor that provides friction to prevent the bangle from turning while mid cast. I also had no problems with it in my personal use
Should I get this over penn slammer 4s?
can you tell me, (5:18)what rod do you use? thanks
Bro my saragosa 5000xg makes noises when I keep spinning and not flip the manual bail is this normal plz? And it's new but I'm not sure thanks my man tc
i got a daiwa ninja lt5000. doesnt even have any waterproofing seals etc dipped in salt water many times (fell since i fish on a jetty :) )
never ever ever got anything i opened many times to check and stuff. it is smooth a f . yeh one thing ill point out if u replace its felt dragwashers with carbontex ones ur done. best reel ever
