It took Penny Heller a long time to recover from the trauma of a brutal physical assault, suffered in her youth. When she married Robert, he provided her with the love and reassurance she craved for and the two settled down in a pretty house in the grounds of the public school where Robert was a master. But the headmaster of the school is not what he seems and Penny is convinced he means to harm her... is her fear a figment of her tortured imagination or are there forces at work that intend to manipulate her anxieties with fatal consequences?

in this and Horror of Frankenstein, Ralph has a way of talking that makes him feel like a psychopath who has no empathy, there's just this polite tone in his voice and his expression it always seems like he's deliberately lying and loves every minute of it.

I saw this great film late at night on the BBC in the autumn of '86, when I was sixteen. It's a wonderfully creepy film and made a big impression on me - I wanted to see all the 60's/70's horror films then, whether by Hammer or otherwise.

Just watched this tonight for the first time ever . A creepy psychological thriller indeed , very typical of its time. Strangely I thought we'd see more of Peter Cushing in it . Ralph & Judy are great.
