Dont read self help like its leisure. Read self help like its a textbook. Take notes, and apply your notes to real life, but make sure you only read one book at a time, because each book is a different subject.

Look, if you've got a new formula in physics, guess what, the problems won't solve themselves... you've got to use them, a lot. It's not because you've learned a new formula, that you'll successfully be able to use them. The books are there, to show you how it can be done, when you use the principles in them. I started my self improvement journey February of 2021, read my first book on this topic called Atomic Habits by James Clear. Now I'll admit self improvement really did help me change my mindset but I did notice that 1% rule I read about I'm slowly starting to slack. I did well sticking to my habits for 7 weeks but on the 8th week out of no where I suddenly don't feel like anything and now it's been 3 weeks since I'm back at my old habits. Self improvement is hard and it's challenging, just typing this whole comment out is randomly giving me a reason to give it a shot & keep trying how weird haha

I would go as far as unsubscribing from self help guru channels (no offense to anyone in the self help industry or to cole) but at some point I feel like there needs to be a stopping point with all the self help that your consuming. What’s the point of consuming more self help when you already know how to self help yourself? It’s already inside of you now, there’s no need to look for more of it, you got your life together so what? This is something I think we can all agree on btw, I feel like at some point we need to let the self help stuff go away. I mean who wants to be learning the same thing over and over again the next 5-90 years and doing nothing. This is just an opinion guys this is something that I’m already beginning to think now, I think self help needs to be consumed very limited if not nothing.

And when you consume too much self help, eventually your going to consume something that’s complete garbage and B.S. THANK YOU SO MUCH i NEEDED THAT. Also this video is perfect along with why self-improvement is ruining your life by better ideas. Self-improvment is not a hooby itself but just a companion throughout your life. You will never be done improving yourself or discovering yourself. And like you said in aonther video: Most answers reveal themselves through doing, not thinking. So act along searching for solutions and answers. Every successful person did not become successful because they were extremly good at self-improvment but because they were good at something. For example if you are a student: Study along reading self-help books from time to time. Do not make them your first periority because self-improvment is not about much you know or understand but about how much you acklowedge the knowledge you gained and can imply it throughout time. It takes some time. Be patient and consistent. And also a great insight from a book: Do not try to change your circumstances and environment but your limitng beliefs first which cause negative thoughts and negative behaviour.

Nice video. I really like when the graphics letters are booming into the video. I do think that self-helps books are a good framework to make change in your life, while being unhappy for yourself. The important thing is not to stop reading self-helps books but practice the stuff and apply deeply into a mindset and way of living. And I do agree with your thoughts, and it can be posing, at the end when you do not diversify your reading.

I was reading a book on homesteading, and the author (Shannon A. Hayes) had a very similar three-part list on the process of becoming a homesteader. Step one was also a process of dissociation and mourning; step two was also a learning process; and step three was also a kind of application. The difference was that skill-learning in homesteading is not passive. It was very, very active. What distinguished step three from step two was tying newfound skills to community engagement and higher values -- in other words, what made step two poisonous was not that it was inactive (because in this case it was anything but); rather, stage two was so myopically self-oriented that the people who got stuck there failed to find a positive balance in homesteading, in the long term. I agree with what you say about inaction. I find it rather frustrating when I get so pumped about doing something that I get the dopamine hit just for thinking about it and my brain somehow thinks that it's something I have already accomplished. However, thinking about it in the context of this other book had me wondering whether another part of the problem with people in your stage two might be that everything is done outside of any "real" context.
I say "people in stage two" as though I am not, myself, a person frequently stuck in stage two. *Chortles.* I keep going back to community college every few years, it seems, to pursue new interests that I never make a career out of. *Eye rolls.*

Is there anyone here who, like me, likes to read self-help books as an end in of itself? In other words, not to get anything in the future but because it's a nice way to read and feel good for the afternoon w/ a cup of coffee? I think if you're treating the book as a means to an end then yes that can become stupid but re reading portions of The Power of Now is one of my favorite things to do just for the sake of it.

This actually reminds me back to I was studying physics. I read the book, listened to the professor, I thought it all was logical and I understood it. Days passed, weeks passed and I had to apply the things I was thought. And I just couldn't because I didn't understand. I remember the words but I didn't get the clue. But up until that moment I thought I did.
The only way to really learn is to put the books aside and try to apply them. You will find gaping holes in your understanding when you do. But if you don't stop building your 'knowledge' the hidden holes continue. This means if you encounter a hole in your knowledge while dealing with something you have to learn 2 things at once. And that didn't really work out when I was studying physics.
I like Cole's video's because they are self reflections of his actions. Because he reflects I do. I wouldn't have had this thought without this video.

I get it, but I disagree with a lot of it. In my experience step 2 and step 3 go hand in hand and the learning & growing is maximised through that. Don't get stuck at step 2 is super important advice, but that doesn't mean you have to step away from self help and just stick to what you've already consumed. Just make sure you're ACTUALLY consuming it properly. Also, I strongly believe that even if you are just blindly consuming self help content and not really doing any of it, you're still better off than you would be not consuming it at all. I found that just absorbing this stuff alone has made some mindset changes and acted as a positive influence on my mood and the way I view things.

I think that consumption should be done in an extremely picky manner. Everyone says to do the actions said on the books before moving onto the next one, and I can see why, but we're not all looking for the same solutions. Most people look at self help books to see ideas which can help them get better, and out of 100 ideas, it's more than normal to only find 5 of them applicable to your life. Not everyone is the same, some of these books have so much information you'd rather not even start working on yourself because it feels like a really long journey. Procrastination loves to consume us 😂

I completely agree with wanting to improve yourself in positive aspects however many who try to find and who have found often don't even attempt to practice it because of their weak mentality. This method only works for those who are willing to make a difference in their lives instead of just nodding their heads and keep on living in ignorance.

A very good film, a few years ago I fell into the trap of self-development, absorbing all the self-development books and films that fell into my hands, but the effect was opposite to the intended one because the more I absorbed the knowledge, the more I became convinced that I don't know enough to start doing anything with my life, there are no shortcuts to achieve the goal, there is only one way to success and it is daily consistent thought-out actions (Process). Like it or not, you need to start working with the amount of knowledge you currently have and develop by acting and gaining knowledge during the process, surrounding yourself with people who have already achieved this success. To give a short example: I recently accepted a job as an operator in the largest and most modern company producing battery separators in Europe and probably the second in the world, I thought that I might not be able to cope because it is the latest technology, but I decided that I would give it 100% and as it turned out, after a month I was one of the best employees in the department, having no knowledge at the beginning and gaining it consistently every day at work. Success depends on how much you are willing to sacrifice and whether you are persistent enough to survive the process of becoming the person you ultimately want to become.

I literally just came to this revelation. I’m done reading self help books, lol because you think you’re doing something to improve yourself, but it’s absolutely worthless if you don’t apply what you read.. Go figure, lol. I went from that to reading depraved non- fiction and True Crime. I went off the deep end in other direction, lol.
I feel it’s cathartic reading depraved themes, of course, in moderation. The one I am finishing now that’s closest to “self help” is “People Can’t Drive You Crazy If You Don’t Give Them The Keys..” which is reviewed in high regard off Amazon.

I spent 2 years reading self-help books and I had this sense for a while that I was being excessive with them. I read them every day expecting good results for change, but I would always go back to my old habits and ways of living. Now, I've been picky with what I choose to read for the mind. Each self-help book had different perspectives on how one should live life, and it puts me in a trap where I can't decide what my path is in life. It's really funny to me now because based on Marcus Aurelius's philosophy about avoiding a life of excessiveness, I realized I've been excessive with these self-help books on the shelf. I can't say these books are...useless because that's a little overexaggerated. It may benefit some people and not for others. They helped me get through some parts of my problems, but not all. If I didn't spend time reading a large amount, I could notice a better change in my life and avoid information overload. It makes more sense to read one book at a time and invest into its ideas first before moving on to the next one. Or I can read one self-help book that relates to me and read a fiction book just to balance out my ideas. RANGE by David Epstein, Laws of Human Nature/The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene, and technology books (simply teaching technology and not throwing in "SELF-HELP") help me form more reasonable ideas about living my life. I could be wrong, but I think the moral lesson about this topic is...choosing your information wisely and asking yourself if the information is CREDIBLE and RELIABLE for you to use in your life is something you need to think first ahead. Maybe...some of us want fast results, we want to change overnight, we want to get where we want to be (whether we think it's a week, a month, or a year); I am not sure because everyone has different reasons for reading these books; it's simply a thought. Based on Cole Hastings bias, it's a matter of taking notes of and applying what you learned from the material. Hopefully, my older brother finds out about this and avoids the trap, because he's been reading too many self-help books and he isn't applying most of what he learned in his life (not that much changed from him). Seeing his audible books filled with so many of them overwhelms me.

I do trust in Self-Help books, since there are people behind a book being written... Press, research, Writers, etc... it is just the fact nobody tells you what to do with such information, which is actually the reason I love this video... in a way, you are telling us Self-help books are helpless, but if one listens carefully, that piece of advice on stage 3 comes up and wraps-up the idea.

I’ve read many self help books and realized I’ve been reading them like magazines, one after another and I almost always feel jaded because ive consumed so many in hopes of finding an author that moves me that now I may not even get through a whole book before I get bored with that one and pick up another one. Self help books can become addicting because they all offer “hope” of a better life “if only you changed your mindset” so you get psychologically conned before you’ve even opened the book because you’re given what sometimes turns out to be a false promise of enlightenment.

That if self help books really work ,then why doesn't everyone who reads it is successful?
I thought about it & also related it with my previous experiences and finally came to a conclusion that rarely anyone applies the thing in reality.
But it's not also the application too.
We should apply it regularly not just one week or two. We should be consistent with it

I still continue to read because... it’s still a bit of a challenge for me. I don’t fast read. I read just a few hours the good weeks. I take note at every chapters. I see it almost as work... more like a workout for the brain. First I choose the book I will read on the moment depending of where are my thoughts. And will use books as feed for my though, make them challenged.
For example during the first lockdown I binge read/view content about bodyweight workout because being at home full time was the dream for it and was thinking about it all the time. When I had the feeling of perfectly know what to do, I wasn’t thinking much about it. So I started to think that I was single since forever. So I started to read a book about the life of a French pick up artist. I read only half of it. The first weekend of unlockdown I get my first girl friend. Now I broke up with her but I constantly think about how I had no frame at all when I was with her. So I’m currently reading « no more mr nice guy »... and I’m only at half of it... and every chapters is like a punch in the face and a pressure to make change of thought and behaviors.
    So I don’t feel I’m slacking when I read. It’s even a bit painful... Like I said :
    Like a workout.
