    I'm a white armor man. Sorry guys. I'm 42 years old. I wasn't fit enough. There was a lot of controversy, so I measured the weight today. That weapon weighs 3.1kg. It's never light, like the comments here. Actually, I use a 6.5KG glave. I haven't felt a big difference of 2kg or 3kg, and I haven't thought about weighing it. But in reality, that white glave is also very heavy. The blade weighs 1.1KG. It has heavy metal in the black part of the blade. But the blade made it as flexible and safe as possible for the safety of the opponent. If it was a real 5kg weapon and the blade was 3kg, everyone would have been hurt. But this is a sport for us, not martial arts for murder. Let's settle for testing, simulating. Sometimes you want a hell of a battle reality... we even have a working life in real life hahaha.

    It seems the story of Romance of the Three Kingdoms is right about Guan Yu's Dragon Glaive. The book said that the Glaive has the weight of 40 kg, and entirely made from metal. And every time we see Guan Yu in action (in every Three Kingdoms drama out there), he always use swinging movement, like what the White Armor Man doing in this sparring. The point of the technique actually use the weight of the weapon to overcome the enemy defense. So when the user swing his Guan Dao, even if the enemy parry it with their weapon, they will still overwhelmed by the weight factor of the Blade. That's why Guan Yu won a lot in battle (at least in Romance of the Three Kingdoms book). He used he muscles and the weight of his weapon to overcome the enemy defense, so whenever he swing his Dao, it doesn't matter if the enemy parry it or not, it will always score a kill for him.

    • @hemmydall
      @hemmydall Před 4 měsíci +3

      Iirc the "40 kg" was more like a training one for muscle development; you wouldn't be able to wield one that heavy in a combat scenario. A 5-10 kg is more likely its combat weight, and that's still incredibly heavy. Imagine the inertia and force behind that spinning jump strike? That's gotta be intense.

    • @b.h.abbott-motley2427
      @b.h.abbott-motley2427 Před 4 měsíci +2

      @@hemmydall 40kg would be completely impractical for fighting. Even 5kg would be much heavier than most polearms intended for combat, which are more like 2-3kg. There is that manual by Cheng Zi Yi that says 5.9-11.8kg for this weapon. I'm skeptical a polearm of such weight would be effective.

Although the inner weapon is plastic, it is not light. It's over 2 kilograms. Actually, I have a 5.5 kilogram dragon glaive. It's very heavy and not good for many techniques. Some issues with this video:
    1. The swordman should not be able to block the heavy 360 rotation blow. Just like you cannot expect a short sword to fully block the wide swing of a claymore due to the momentum.
    2. The Guandao seems to be abit short short. The mounting point of the Dao should be at the top of your head. It seems to be more than a head short.

    Guan Yu height around above 9 Feet 'Late Eastern Han Dynasty' Measurement x 23.5 cm = 212 cm (or in modern day around 7 Feet). Predicted height around 212-218 cm. But 23.5 cm is actually a ruler (not a feet size measurement) that found in Eastern Han Dynasty Tomb, so if we observe the Qin Dynasty Teracota Warrior that made in real size the height of warriors vary from 175 cm to high rank warrior 200 cm (that mean in ancient time high people already exist, like nowadays, no different). So if we want measure above 9 feet, I think we should use the feet size of Teracota Warrior not the ruler size, that mean actually if we want imagine Guan Yu height, we can use Yao Ming, Sun Ming Ming, Abiodun Adegoke, or even Robert Wadlow height as proof that Giant always exist through time. That above 9 feet may really mean same like nowadays 9 feet (2.7 m). Red Hare must be very rare Giant horse (from toe to head top height 3 m)

    It is a real fun to watch. But I really think such a heavy long glaive is for the Calvary where it can get more reach and momentum. Just my thoughts. Anyway, thanks for your efforts.

    As depicted in movies, the main purpose of the glaive was to lop enemies head clean off while on horse back. Wonder how doable would that be.

    I was expecting more belly and leg cuts. Spinning overhead attacks are easy to block because they are big moves. It is better to be aggressive and keep moving against multiple opponents, otherwise they overwhelm you. The glaive user still did a good job tho.

    Guan Yu used the glaive while mounted on the horse for maximum reach with blade. Lu Bu was the only opponent that he struggle with in one of the battle.

    A guan dao is supposed to be so heavy its imossible to block it. You cant fight it like a spear. Its a literal sword on a stick.

      Yeah and at least in the novel he fights on the horse, so it's sorta like jousting, with the momentum of the hosrse he'd be unstoppable.

    With the weight of that glaive, it would be AWFULL to even try to parry the tornado strike with a smaller blade 😭 against that thing, you need either full-plate (and metal bones to survive the blunt force that thing has) or you'll need a greatsword for the extra reach and weight. Cuz I'd rather have a Ōdachi rather than a Katana when fighting that shit 💀

    Seen a lot of people do this test, but pole arm vs swordsmen depend on a few factors
    1-which pole arm is it, how long is it
    2-which sword are they using
    3-compentance of the pole arm user
    4-how good are the sword users in working as a team
    Every test i seen sorta ends up the same, pole arm guy has no problem with 2 people, 3 he will lose if one dude is willing to take one for the team, 4 is impossible

    From what i read in books, Guan Yu's weapon is very heavy (18 kg or 48 kg), so I think the user can't swing it that fast unless he is a very strong person. But I'm no martial art master of anything, so I don't know what I'm talking about.

    From the look at the blade on the glaive in comparison to the naginata, I’m just wondering wouldn’t the two weapons be equal so no matter which one the dragon glaive or the naginata the two would be equally effective. The only difference would be the fighting art/ techniques they’re used.
