I was finally able to fix my broken rear passenger drivers side door handle today on my 2001 Ford Explorer Limited using 1/4"x1/2" rivets and a 'bubba jr.' I picked up at Harbor Freight for $22 yesterday. I had drilled out the old rivets yesterday and was going to use 1/4"x1/2" bolts with locking nuts but there was no room to reach inside the door to get the nuts onto the bolts. Yesterday I had removed the inner door panel, unbolted the window slide (which does NOT come out like it does on the front so you have to hold it out of the way while you reach in and unclip the the rod), removed broken outside handle, put in the new handle with the rod attached. Today i riveted the outside door handle into place before reattaching the rod to the clip. Be sure to test if outside handle will release/open lock BEFORE locking the rod in place, by closing the clip around the rod, and replacing inner door panel. Just close the lock, with the door open, by using a screw driver and then lift the outside handle to verify that the lock opens, then close the clip around the rod. Re-bolt the window slide and replace inner panel. Thanks for the knowledge of riveting these handles back in place.

I have watched God only knows how many video's on how to fix this. No video's on this POS 2003 Ford Sports Trac. So I looked at other Ford trucks, looking for something close. Most of the one's I found said to remove the two nuts holding the door handle on. But it has rivets. Then I stumbled across your video, So Thank You !!! this helped. Ford wanted $40 for the handle. Ebay $8-$10. I need it now so I went to the Ford Dealership. And he says I can order it for you and have it in about a week.

Thanks for the video, good job. Wish you would have given some explanation on what exactly was the problem with the door handle on the video before replacing it. Not sure if I need to replace my handle or maybe it needs adjusting. It looked like from your video that the rod coming from the handle to the plastic clip could be adjusted which makes me wonder if that's the issue with mine.. My door opens fine it just that the handle itself has a bunch of play in it. Hate to buy a new door handle and get into it just to find out that the rod just needed adjusted.

you can use button head screws with some lock nuts.

Isn't the rubber gasket supposed to be between the door handle mechanism and the door? Looks like it would fall right off since the holes in the rubber gasket are bigger than the rivet.

I have a 96 Ford explorer. My driver side door, handle is loose but still able to open my door. Is there an easy way for me to tighten it or would I have to remove panel?

The plastic handle on the interior rear door of my van busted. It's pretty old. The cable mechanism works fine. But how do I fix this plastic lever?

The thick metal loop has a section on the bottom which actually fits into a hole on the up/down door latch. This info is missing from all these handle videos!!!

Will this method work on a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis as well? The original handle is fine and still installed but the rivets fell out and now the handle is loose and not held in place

@Jeremy M D Jaeger Late reply here, but no, it won’t work, it’s a completely different style door handle that’s mounted differently.

What size rivets? Will 3/16” work?

Some replacement parts come with bolts and nuts, instead of having to use a rivet. Is there a preferred solution?

I saw another video where they drilled out the rivets and replaced with bolts and nuts. Either one should work just fine, so most will probably use bolts, since most people don't have huge industrial rivet guns.
