  • Updated 2022/09/13 Shows how to fix broken cables that prevent many Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury car and truck doors from opening. It's an easy fix. Just file a bicycle brake adjuster to resemble the shape of the original housing end. This idea can be used to fix other types of cables also.

    The brake cable adjuster I use in the video were ordered off of ebay. The seller is no longer available, but there are plenty of other sellers. You can also get them at some bicycle repair shops. I recommend the 10mm adjusters. Buy a few extra in case you make mistakes. They are much cheaper on ebay.
    Thanks for watching. Feel free to make comments and ask questions.

    Thanks, you saved me from paying $400 again. I watched all your videos twice then ordered the cables ends on Amazon for 8 bucks.. They fit perfect with no alterations. My 99 F250 had the same problem as yours, the upper door lock cable deteriorated at the door center, very easy fix if you take the speaker out. I am now subscribed to all you videos, thanks again for helping all of us.

    Top notch video instruction. This saved me $700. My dealer just quoted me almost $700 to open and repair the rear door on my 2001 F250 Super Duty. I'll save another $700 when I make a preemptive repair on the other rear door next weekend! Thank you my man.

    Thanks mate! Your video got me out of a bind - fixed in a day! I see comments saying "you can buy all the parts" but try doing that from Australia! It won't happen inside of a week, and some parts for my 2002 F250 take 6 months to get here! Anyway, I was able to source the bicycle cable adjusters at the second store I tried, and following your lead, modded them to fit. Purrrrfect! Cheers!

    Thank you for video. I just repaired the rear and side cargo door on my Ford E250. This saved me a ton of money. The dealership quoted me around $130 to $140 for the parts per door. When I called the service department they were going to charge me over $500 per door. I can't believe the labor would be so high on just replacing the cables and latch assemblies. I made four new connectors per door and still took me less than 3 hours. Thanks!

    I did the repair on my rear doors a long time ago using your video and the plastic fill tubes as sleeves. Then one of the doors started acting up and I found our about the Dorman cable repair ends. Searched and in your newer video on repair and in it you mentioned a different video showing how to use cable repair kit instead of the bike brake adjusters. Couldnt fine that video so I just tore into it and trialed and errored my way to success. Thanks for the work you put into these videos. They are great!

    Thanks for the video on fixing the door latches. I used your barrel adjuster method and fixed the cables on the drivers side rear door on my 2001 F250. Went pretty easy and I got the adjusters free from the bike store because they were used. Do you have any knowledge on the latch itself failing? The door doesn't seem to be solid when it's closed and I think the top latch may be the problem.

    • @fixpro256
      @fixpro256  Před 8 lety

      Sorry it took me so long to respond. If the door isn't shutting well, try taking the latches out and cleaning them. Then lubricate. If they still don't work well, you may be able to adjust the post that the latch grabs. I usually have to shut mine with my hand about a foot or two from the top so more force goes to the top latch than the bottom.

  • @rhondasweeney5031
    @rhondasweeney5031 Před 7 lety +2

    I've got my brake adjusters and tools ready....what did you use to wrap the cable before putting the adjuster on it? Looks like some kind of tape.

    • @fixpro256
      @fixpro256  Před 7 lety

      It is just a good quality duct tape. You can use just about any tape. It is just to keep the adjuster in place while you do the installation. Before you get everything installed, there is no tension to keep things in place. After that, the tension on the system should keep everything together.

    This was a great how to video. I did manage to get the drivers side suicide door open. I think my issue on just one the handle side. The cable housing busted off and just going through the handle hole within the door frame. I can pull both the cables and they open up fine. So I'm wondering if I can just fix that portion without pulling any of the locking mechanism???

    • @fixpro256

    Great video. Thanks. This is about a 1999 truck. The suicide door latch on my 2013, F150 with 122,000 miles just broke. Seems like this problem is common. If the problem is indeed these 75 cent, rubber cable ends breaking, I am going to be really pissed. What a frickin' rip-off!! A dealer charges $500 to $700 per door to fix, when Ford could have used $1.50 metal ends in the first place. Ford (and other makers) should be ashamed of the crappy design they have been pushing for 15 years!

    • @fixpro256
      @fixpro256  Před 6 lety

      I agree. It also sucks that Ford only sells the new cable with the latch attached. They don't sell just the cable by itself. But, you can get an aftermarket cable without the latch. Or, buy the metal ends, or make them yourself. As far as I know, they are still putting the plastic ones in the 2018s

      I couldn't find your original questions. Maybe you already found an answer??? I don't know that I can explain the concept very well, but if the housing is not held in place, the inner cable will not work. Other people use cable ties, epoxy, pieces of copper..... On a bicycle, the brake adjuster is used to adjust the brakes AND hold the cable housing in place. In a car/truck door, they usually give you a different way to adjust the lengthen. So, the bicycle brake adjuster is not being used as an "adjuster" in the truck door. It is only being used to replace the faulty housing end that broke. Let me know if that doesn't answer your question.

      HowToAutoRepair. it can be done in an editor like Kinemaster. Since you are changing the video info..It works a great majority of time.My latch was stuck. Both the electronic controlled cable and the
      manual opener cables are bad. I am going to try this.

    For 10 bucks you can buy the correct pieces for one door from Amazon.

      Yes. When I made the video bac in 2016, they weren't as easy to find. Now they are even sold at the autoparts stores. I think I talked about that in some of the comments, but I need to update the description/txt also. Thanks

      Yes. I always have to compare it to other videos to guess at how high to set the recording volume. I didn't guess so well on this one.
