Many have already said it, but I'm here to say it again - what an outstanding presentation. The camera work, editing and sound, along with clear, concise explanations for each step make yours among the BEST construction videos out there. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing, and for being the kind of teacher that makes learning FUN -

My words precisely!!
You and I are cut from the same cloth….I have almost all the same tools and belt! Just bought the Diamondback belt. Light and tough as nails!! I got the remodels version- LOVE all the pockets!!
Yes .in 1970 it would be a idea! But not i 2023. Nothing heard about calculated von? 👎👎🇩🇪🤨🤨
builders ,carpenters ,enggniers ,architechs..............they all keep on talking about runs, rise ,calculations, expensive equipments,tTrignometry and all load of things
Joe you are a superstar ,you just takes all those things out of equation man ,hats off ,what a video and every one should learn how to cut the rafter
No complicated maths or anything
well done Joe
Damn, quickest and simplest rise over run explanation I've ever heard.
Hey, glad you think so! Thank you.
😆 🤣 😂 way simpler than using mathematics and tables
I love the way you have your carpenters helper in the out takes. Teaching kids how to work is one of a father’s most fundamental responsibilities.
God job man
All the rich chickens will want to live there.
OMG, Joe thanks for all your help. ""I'm learning how to do it"" at age 69 . Thanks again from the "The Great White North" Canada.

Great presentation
Of all the vids on CZcams about rafter builds, this one makes the most sense to a complete novice. Great work.

Absolutely most logical, clear and concise instructions on a practical way of going about laying out a lean to roof.
"oh jeez, I know what it's called..." Birdsmouth. BIRDSMOUTH!
Really liked the video - this version of how to measure & cut a birdsmouth actually made sense.
Oh thank god. I found exactly what I've been searching for. Thank you.
Was planning to build one as that but hated to calculate where to fix the birds mouth. You made it so simple without math. Thanks. Top teacher.
I was building a coop also and you helped me a lot to put the roof on. Thanks!
Nice job with everything 👍🏽
Geez I already learned so much in the first 2 minutes and 35 seconds.
Fantastic video and channel 🎉
Thank you for explaining this simply for us ladies.😊
Thanks for all you do Joe. Your tips helped me understand and build our roof for our chicken coop.
I’m building a woodshed, but have a couple of challenges on the roof pitch. Found your video, and it cleared it up on how to do right and easy. Thanks!
I really needed this video, thank you
Great tips thank you
Thanks brother. I’d buy you a beer and a shot for that.
Over 2 years on and people are still getting so much value from this! Thanks man, great work 👍
Great instructor! Best Bird's Mouth instruction I've seen so far! Thanks
BEST simple explanation ever !
That was the best video I have seen when it comes to making the birds mouth.. I truly appreciate you taking a time to make this video
I'm soon to rebuild a porch that has gone to rot. Your methods and tips will save me hours of frustration. Thank for the video.
Thanks for the tips. I'm a complete novice when it comes to wood working and we are building an 10x8 coop, and I was stuck with the roof. This reference is going to be great.
Excellent will help me with my future pigeon loft builds
Very, very clear, I was able to follow every step with my speed square and a demo piece of wood. I am not building a coop or chicken mansion, but a free-standing awning at my front and back door. this has been the most simple version of a single angle roof I have been able to find. Thanks so much.
Cheers for taking the time to put this together, I'll be using the tips over here in the UK for my garden shed 👍👏
Best video on Bird's Nest cuts. Thank you!
Found this while looking up ideas for building a bbq shed roof. Great info and cool idea for the purlins. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the info!
Best visual tutorial I've seen yet. Thanks, Joe! You're the effing man!!!
Good job
Good video mate. Much appreciated:)

Thank you for sharing, very informative.
Great Ideas to build a shed
Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge in a simple manner that almost anyone can follow. Hope you continue to share your experience. Much appreciated ✌️
Learned a few things there. Thanks for filming, Andy
Hi an excellent demonstration will help me immensely.
I'm using this video to help me when I build a skillion porch including the purlins for the eaves, directly off my skillion conservatory.
You are an excellent tutorial tutor.
Thank you so much for helping me today I really appreciate it.
Absolutely no bull crap! Just clear, concise instruction that even I can understand. I'm so glad you don't waste our valuable time with rhetoric and hyperbole. You da man!
The best and clearest explanation of how to do a slope roof.
i CANNOT SAY THANK YOU ENOUGH "FROM THE CLOUDS CAME CLARITY"; PATRICK.P
That’s a great video. Thanks for teaching the rest of us.
You are welcome!
Good teaching. Thank you.
Thank you thank you thank you! I needed this simplicity.
Wow what a presentation. I actually think I can do it now 👏⚡️
Really appreciate the video. I just finished the lean to roof on a duck pen using the steps you outlined. Thanks!
Great video. Greetings from Denmark.
Great teaching and editing. Subscribed

I love when I thought I never get it and here you are make it clear for someone like me... Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Best instructional video of How to cut a birds mouth for shed rafters!
The lightbulb clicked on in my head for the speed square tips too!
This was the best explanation for birds mouths I've see yet
Thank you! Great explanation, that was a big help for me.!
The chickens are gonna love their mansion!
Thank you for posting this!! I am building a similar style run to the end of our coop and using this lean to style rafter. Your demo was better than the dozen odd prior ones I watched to get the moxie up to do this project. Like you, my daughters were "helping" oversee quality control. Going to cut these tomorrow and will definitely do a practice piece before cutting into my 2x6s.
Best of luck, Thank you
This is the clearest, best communicated training on birdsmouth i have seen (out of seven). Thank you.
Great job! Your make good teacher in this field. Each one teach one.
And thank you for responding back to me
I truly respect old world craftsmanship, always admire diligence in appearance and fit. You are definitely a craftsman. With that said, and considering time is valuable and sometimes more modern brackets are exponentially more robust than wood to wood fitments, I’d point to the use of metal prefab brackets between your top plate and rafters. Sold by most lumber stores, they are called “18-Gauge ZMAX Galvanized Hurricane Tie”. Sell for $1.25 each. Huge time saver, bearing strength of 1100 pounds each.
This was a great video! Thanks! Work perfectly!
Best tutorial I've seen. You know it when you've watched it all the way through, then realized you've watched it before because there's already a thumbs up. Nice pacing, clear, easy to follow. Thank you!!
Well explained. I’m not a tradesman, just a pen pusher and but this guy made it so simple that I think I can finally build my outdoor storage
you are a genius teacher all i can say is thanks and god bless you,,,,,,,,,,,,,sam
Great vid, thanks for making it straight forward, best vid on birds mouth yet, cheers.
Thank you for teaching for beginners like me makes us not to be afraid tackling porjects like this awesome
Birds mouth explanation is great! Many different ways to do it but this way is great.
Thanks very much for posting this tutorial! Worked slick.
Awesome, glad it helped!
@@JoeSimple thank you I'm building quite a big building this is exactly what I needed for my tower roof.
This is a great video!!!
This is one of the most educational and easy to understand videos I’ve seen on this topic!! It has provided the kind of advice I was looking for. Thank you so much!!
I just stumbled upon your video, and glad I did. The way you explain each step in simple terms is outstanding, especially for those like myself with limited building experience. This video would have been a game changer for me when building my 10 x 24 firewood lean-to shed last summer. The idea of doing birds mouth cuts intimidated me, so I used hurricane ties instead. The way you explained it and the detailed use of the speed square (never knew how to use one) was excellent and I would have given it a go. I just kept shaking my head while watching this and kept thinking, I would have done a few things differently with my shed (like adding the purlins to accommodate a longer eave) cause you explained its so well. I have only found a few channel to subscribe to, and you have now been added to that list! Thanks, and looking forward to checking out your other videos.
I am honored to be on your sub list! don't beat your self up I defiantly went over board on this build (always do). Plus I knew I was going to move it around with the tractor so it needed to be strong. for a wood shed straps will work just fine.
Joe Simple awesome vid!!!
Same here wish I saw this video before my build I too used hurricane straps on my slanted roof. I think the hurricane straps will hold just fine however next time bird’s mouth cuts for sure!
What a beautiful sky!
Love your video! I'm researching how to build a lean to roof. Your video is beyond helpful!
Great explanation to make rafters!
Wow, now here’s a man who knows how to treat Chickens, good job!
Joe simple with a simple explanation of rafters. Thanks! 🙌
Thank you (and your trusty assistant) for the great explanations and demonstrations.
Out of all the videos Ive listen to this one makes the most sense and you do so well at explaining everything for someone like me that isn't that great with math. Really appreciate your teaching it will go a long way in helping me get though my project.
Glad it was helpful!
thank you for your video, it helped us do the bird's mouths on the rafters for our first new small house! very much appreciated.
This is the best rafter cutting video on CZcams. I’ve watched them all. You didn’t over complicate it and that helped so much!
I am converting a shed to a hen house & adding an outside run. I loved the way you measured out a template, that's kinda how I do things too Making these cuts were so intimidating; so I was looking into pitch connectors (easy way out), but you just saved me a good bit of money. You were so detailed in how to do this, I think I can handle it now. Thank you so much for sharing this. ❤
Now that I saw the 'outtakes' at the end of this video, I would say it took a little bit longer to build ! LOL
Good stuff on the speed square !
After uploading our how to video on how to install roof water barrier on a newly constructed house, your video was suggested which I'm glad it did.
Right information for Shed Lover!!!
Great clear video thanks! I’m no carpenter and was trying to plan a small roof like this.
Just what I needed to know. No BS here. Subscribed!
Thank you so much for making this clear and easy to understand especially using the speed square for cutting out angles . I have never done this before , it’s my first shed self build and you have made it understandable . Thank you ❤️🤗❤️
je parle pas anglais et j arrive a comprendre quand même tellement tu explique bien.
good job merci
merci beaucoup, heureux qu’il a été utile et vous avez pu comprendre
Ready for some more videos! Can't wait for an update!
Excellent video, thank you. I had 4 books telling me to "do a birdsmouth" for the shed rafters without explaining how to do one. This video was exactly what I needed.
I also like the violin / fiddle in the background . Great job
You explained to me in less than 3 minutes how to use a speed square. Thank you
Subscribed after only watching this one video. Best one I've seen on cutting a birds mouth for idiots! Really helpful, so thank you!
Great video !
Good job, very helpful.
