My daughter has her 2014 Focus at the Ford dealer for the 6th time. (Covington KY) Date 9/25/2023. Transmission is making a terrible noise, but still drives. Cost to repair $7300!! No typo. Last repair was $2000 not covered by warranty. Car is in beautiful shape, new tires and brakes 150,000 miles. Dealer tells her he will give her $200 on trade in. She asked for her car back and they won't until she pays them $125 for the estimate. Called several independent shops and they will not touch this transmission.
That's about right for internal gear train damage. It's an expensive transmission. I recommend sourcing a low mileage used transmission and putting a new clutch, forks, slave cylinder and tcm on it. That'll save you thousands. Or reuse tcm If it's already been replaced by Ford. But never reuse a clutch and apply components
Dont buy fords 😅
Rebuilding one, just under $600 you can buy the kit for the clutch and forks. CZcams has some easy video watching tips.
I paid over 3k November 2022! Less than 7 days later it began to have the same issue. They wanted me to bring it in and pay $179 for another diagnostic and $80hr for the tech labor. I was quoted $310 estimate. I have the TCM and transmission canister valve, the accuators replaced as well,! Ford is constantly ripping people off and that class action suit fucked over a lot of people. It's 2024 of January. My car still has issues. And tired of giv
Someone please help us( Sue )Ford correctly this time.
Just bought a 2014 focus se a couple days ago, only had 53000miles and looks almost new! After less than 20 miles out the dealership it developed a rattle in the back right (possibly shock) and I noticed the shudder in the transmission. Ford have it back today to look into the rattle, and I had no expectations given it was bought as-is, but your videos are giving me some peace of mind so thank you. If the trans does go belly up I’ll be using your videos thoroughly!
Awesome, glad to help. Welcome to the focus family, the have quirky transmissions, but are very reliable otherwise!
I have a 2018 Focus which has been exhibiting the following symptoms: Hard shifting into first and second gear. The clutch is definitely slipping in third gear. Reverse does not work.Transmission overheating etc. In your opinion what would most likely cause these issues and the price range to have them repaired. Thank you for this video. It has been very helpful.
@@tracyrutter3064 if it's bad actuator motors, $1,000 at the dealer or $250 DIY. If it's bad clutch forks, $3200 at the dealer or so, or $750 diy
Absolutely right. Changed the lower actuator that went out on a 2017 that I’m driving works fine thanks for your video.
You're welcome!
Hi, I have a 2018 FF Hatchback 2 liter, 95,000 miles. The DCT has been replaced 3 times since I purchased it used in 2019. > Warranties are expired and it's shuddering again intermittently mainly from stop to 1st gear about a year later from the 3rd replacement. The first time a Ford advisor said it could break down if not fixed. After the 3rd fix, another advisor said he never knew of anyone having issues with the car breaking down with this issue on later models. I'm ok with how it is now but wonder if you think this issue typically gets worse and could lead to major issues later or is there a chance I could drive another 100k or more and be fine with the DTC shuddering now and then. Thank you! Sue
Thanks for the information. I have a 2014 se flex . While under warranty I have had 5 clutches installed since warranty went out I have change both actuator a and b lasted about 5 or 6 months went out yesterday finally got home safely. Yes this is a awesome car it’s just need the trans fixed. Thanks again.
You're welcome, thanks for subscribing! The TCM is common to fail and set actuator codes as well, just so you know (such as P090C) and the TCM is free until 2025 at the dealer.
Thank you for your generosity.
2018 Titanium with 85000 miles.
Shudders starting from stop or a very low speeds. It has been a minor nuisance.
Past 4 months have gone out in morning on 3 occasions and won't turn over.
Ten to twenty minutes battery recharged to 85%+ using small 15 amp Vector unit every time.
Dash has in past briefly displayed alarming "Transmission error, service immediately" (or something very similar). This message does go away without response, unlike CEL, lamp, tire pressure or washer fluid messages so I have dismissed it, I hope not foolishly, as part of a reset with recharging battery. Note this message did not appear this morning after incompletely reconditioning battery overnight (need to use vehicle to go to work, approximately 16 hours using same Vector unit.
I intend to replace battery tomorrow as that is simplest action with any likelihood of addressing issue.
I see I will need to reset the battery sensor afterwards.
I have also stumbled upon the procedure for resetting the transmission control module.
Would resetting either of these have a negative effect prior to replacing battery? Might they address current issues?
Hi, you're welcome. Happy to help. A failing battery can certainly cause a tcm to malfunction. Resetting anything beforehand won't hurt. I would replace the battery and reevaluate if the issue is still present. If so you'll need further diagnosis. See what code the transmission is setting. A 2018 focus shouldn't have a tcm issue. You would likely end up needing actuators or possibly forks
I had mine done 6 times, ready for number 7. This time not covered, glad I have extended warranty till 160000. I will have to pay 500. Also my 2014 focus SE, engine running rough, bit if TCM, COVERED TILL 2025 THROUGH FORD.
Focus in shop now to fix clutch for the 3rd time. Car still under warranty so I don’t pay anything( we purchased the focus as a CPO from Ford.) Will be purchasing the Ford extended service plan at end of the month to cover next 3 years…
Thanks, I just subscribed to your channel. We have a 2017 Ford Focus Titanium. We purchased the car 3 years ago as a CPO vehicle so we are still covered under power train warranty until next month. Car is in Ford service now about to get its 3rd clutch ( free to me because of CPO warranty) I have read that these are good engines, do you agree that they are good? Does it seem reasonable , if we keep up with oil changes, that getting 150000 miles on the engine is obtainable? ( I know you can’t fully predict these things) We are thinking about keeping the car, in spite of the clutch issues, and purchasing a Ford extended service warranty for an extra 3 years….Do you think , based on your expert knowledge of this car, that keeping it in spite of 3 clutch repairs, with an extended warranty ( power train) seems like a good decision to do so? thanks…
I have a 2014 Ford Focus with 112k miles on it. I recently bought it, and when we test drove it, it drove perfectly fine. However, about a week later, it started to jerk weirdly in the third gear. The RPM would go super high, and it wouldn't let me move. It slowly got worse, and I started experiencing stalls at red lights for a couple of seconds as it wouldn't let me shift. After my dad test drove it, he drove it hard, and the transmission overheated, causing the check engine light to come on. We called a mechanic, and he suggested replacing the actuators since the car had some old, cheap ones in it. However, that didn't fix the issue.
The day after getting the actuators replaced, I drove it to work, and the transmission overheated again, rendering it undrivable. I couldn't even turn the car on anymore. We had it towed to the Ford dealership, and they replaced the TCM as it's a recall on the car, and it was free. Unfortunately, this also didn't fix the problem. The dealership suggests fixing the clutch next, so now we are looking around for the cheapest place to get that fixed since the dealership offered to fix it at $3,800, which is WAY too much. Anyways, wish us luck; hopefully, fixing the clutch will officially resolve the issue.
Hi, that should fix your issue and leave you with a very reliable car since the tcm is also new. You can buy the oem kit on amazon and save $1k on parts markup at the dealer amzn.to/48ppwVJ
@@BigBensCarsAndCyclesawesome thank you!
I have 2018 with intermittent electrical issue, engine malfunction service now light comes on and got p2135 throttle position a/b mismatch, car has always had wonky throttle, plus clicking from behind the dash when using hvac, any ideas? saw a tsb for connector bypass under dash but doesn't apply to my year
Thank you for the description of the fork engagement - it describes my issues. Also interesting to hear the good word about the engine - I've noticed mine shows no sign of age and it has a bunch of miles on it. If the OP is reading - I had P285E codes a year ago and got 12,000 miles out of a fix whereby I sprayed carb cleaner in the TCM holes into the transmission housing and cleaned the actuators under the external covers. Today the problem came back. Does this "fix" make any sense? I have had the shudder for about 50K miles.
Hey..yeah I've heard of people pulling the actuators out and spraying cleaner on the forks with the transmission in the vehicle. I think it would be a good temp fix. If the forks barely have resistance, I bet it would last a good while.
I have a question I got a 2013 ford focus I took it in for valve recall that went ok a couple of days ago it just stayed stuck no drive or reverse I put transmission fluid I try resetting transmission starting it on neutral because it only starts random but for now it’s stuck….please help
Hi, you need to have codes scanned. If it's a clutch fork failure, $3,000, if it's the TCM, it's free at ford
Hi. Thank for your video. I have a 2012 Focus. Have just purchased a TCM and would like your thoughts on the programming (if required) and relearning. Many thanks.
Hi.. you should be able to do the programming yourself with forscan. I've never used that but that's what DIYers do
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles Thanks, so programming is a must, cant simply install the new TCM and do a relearn.
Hi Ben, Thank you for your informative video's. I have a 2013 Ford Focus 2.0 TDCI right hand drive Powershift automatic.1st owner. (South Africa). For the last 6 months I have experienced a fairly loud whining noise inside the car, front left side. The noise starts in 1st gear right through to and including 4th gear. Gear 5 and 6 is dead quiet and appears normal in operation at higher speeds. I have never received any codes nor experienced any issues with gear changes, except for the loud noise. Can you please advise?
With the noise only present in certain gears, I suspect an output shaft bearing may be the cause. It's an easy fix. You just need to pull the transmission out and pull off the rear case half. I've got a video called "Ford focus used transmission inspection" which I do that towards the end of the video
I’ve tried to research symptoms for a 2014 Focus clutch, and from what I can gather hard shuttering is the main one for a clutch. I was looking through the comments and didn’t see any definitive answer specifically towards a clutch problem. I know you’re probably tired of seeing the same question but here I am asking lol.
Generally for clutch problems is the main symptom hard shuttering, and if it’s starting to go then it’s light shuttering?
Yes, the clutch shudder is pretty much a normal characteristic of this transmission. You can drive the car hard occasionally to mitigate the shudder.
Thank you!!
Good explanation. I've got a 2012 Focus that has had the transmission controller module replaced in December 2020 when I suddenly started getting shuddering with a transmission alert error showing up. They had to tow it to the Ford Dealer to have the repair done. Not a single issue since replacement. The 2.0Litre engine on the standard Focus Trend is incredible for what it is. Definitely agree that they are solid engines. Just a real shame about the transmission issues.
Absolutely. People have installed manuals in these cars to get away from the auto.
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles I was wondering if I could swap out it out for a manual. How could I find one ? And how expensive is that ? Used one even ? Are there different FOCUS manual transmissions out there ? The sports one vs a less sporty manual transmission?
@frankmontez6853 I recommend the "Ford Focus MK3 Transmission Swap" group on Facebook. But you can check marketplace or salvage yards for an MTX75 transmission, and you'll need a dual mass flywheel for the non-turbo focus
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles flywheel has to changed out as well?
Hello
Thanks for this nice video!
I have 2017 Ford Focus. I got it with 37,000 miles in 2020. Now I have 80.000 miles.
When It shifts from 1 to 2nd gear I have shuddering on warm up engine.
I visited dealership in Chicago, IL they said they don’t have recalls for this model. If I want to fix it I have to pay myself.
What you would you advise to do to fix this shuddering? Or as far as I understood all focuses have this shuddering problem?
Can me with no mechanical skills fit it? And how?
Thanks a lot
Hi, happy to help! Yes, I've got a video on how to replace the clutch and forks with no special tools. An alternative is to drive the car hard occasionally to mitigate the shudder. Here's the video czcams.com/video/EIJt9anfdSM/video.html
Never have I a seen a car with more rebuilt or salvaged titles than the Focus and I suspect a lot of those cars have transmission problems because I have never heard anything bad about the 2.0 I4. Love that engine and the styling, however the transmission problems scare me from buying one. Just imagine how perfect they would be if only they used a torque converter.
I have a 2014 that grinds a bit between first and 2nd gear and has some chatter in reverse. Driving it home today and it actually like it goes in to neutral. We limped it home and now reverse doesn’t work and it only has 1st gear. It tries to shift to 2nd and just revs up like it’s in neutral. 155,000 miles. Any thoughts? TCM or actuators?
Great video helpful information on this transmission
Thank you, I'm glad it helped!
Thanks for posting this video, great information! I have a 2017, so hoping TCM is of the more reliable variety. I clutch scrub safely on my daily communte. I only get shudder on hot days after longer drives. I"ve found pausing afrer taking foot off brake at lights, and then giving it plenty of gas on takeoff solves it. Do you recommend letting off the gas slightly when the car shifts into second and third gear?
Youre welcome, happy to help! When I drive focuses, from a stop I accelerate just a little bit quicker than a car with a hydraulic transmission. And yeah, if you're accelerating hard, not a bad idea to let off a little when it shifts if you're under 3500rpm.
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles Awesome 😎 thanks 🙏
I did what you said I reset the trans shutter stop the next day when I got in my car It hasn’t came back I went by my buddy down the block he does got a scanner like yours no code came up at all it seems to be running pretty good but how long will that last before it starts doing it again I try to hit every point it still seems like it does got a little hesitation and second or third But I haven’t taken it to work yet I’m holding my fingers crossed I do got an appointment with Ford on Tuesday but if it holds up tomorrow should I still go
Thanks for the videos Big Ben!
I’ve got a 2017 Focus automatic that has a shudder or slipping issue from 1st to 2nd gear
The car hasnt been driven a lot and only has 36k miles. Tried the TCM reset which seemed to help, and also tried just driving it hard (someone suggested the clutches might be glazed from not being driven hard or often.
When the trans is cold it drives perfectly but the issue comes back once the car is up to temp. Recently got a CEL P060A. Cleared it and improved ground contacts to the car body. CEL Hasn’t come back but still slipping. I’m thinking TCM…. But what else could it be?
Hi! I think you either have a failing clutch actuator or more likely clutch shudder. You can get a luk repset on rock auto for 600
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles holy speedy reply!
I’ll look into the actuators then. Thank you!
Hello Ben! I must say, your channel is fantastic, and this video is packed with valuable information. I'm currently dealing with a 2011 Fiesta that's throwing error codes P0805 and P2872. Starting the car takes a bit of effort, usually on the third try, and I have to turn the key slowly. Strangely, it won't shift into 3rd gear. I've already replaced both actuators, and the car performs well otherwise. Interestingly, I also possess the special tool to manipulate the socket hole where the actuators are located, and they seem to turn smoothly without any hesitation. They return to their original position without any issues. Any help would be gladly appreciated
Hi, I appreciate you watching and I'm glad the videos are helping! I'm thinking you have a TCM issue. Did you get a letter in the mail about extended coverage through 2025? It may be free for you. You can let Ford diagnose it and fix it for free. If you call to ask, the program is called 14m02 and must show up under your vin. Other possibilities would be a bad ground for the tcm, or a bad new actuator.
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles Hi Ben Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. So I called the dealership and they told me the warranty on the vehicle has been expired and the transmission law suit that came out against Ford back in 2000 for Ford to replace any transmission issue has also needed in 2020. The service manager did mention though that he suspect my issue might be related to a TCM, but those are on backorder for over a year now. D you think the ones on Ebay are worth buying?
at 2:45 the license plate blur is delayed and one can read it. If you have reasons to hide it, might wanna fix it
Hey man I've subscribed and likeing all the videos I watch your an angel 😂 i bought a 2012 focus 2.0 auto dual clutch yesterday with "no issues" i know i got had, i just want to know what you think i should do with fixing it, where i park is quite tricky and you've gotta go back and forwards a few times to get it in and just before i parked it, it came up with transmission overheating wait 5 mins and now its started the shuddering slightly and slower gear changes what are your thoughts? TIA
Sorry to hear. What codes is it setting? P07a3 or p07a5? If so it may need a clutch job. PS I don't get notified on replies to comments, but have a discord and Facebook group
It called a lemon.
I have one been through 4 transmissions .
A car manufacturer tried dry shifting a transmission in the 50's it failed too.
Sounds accurate to me. It's problematic down to the design
I have a 2014 focus. I have replaced the clutch, slave cylinder, both clutch forks and both actuators and I’m still getting codes. They have varied but the most recent is P285D. I replaced both actuators a second time with ford OEM ones, and still getting the same code. Any ideas? When the codes aren’t popping up, it shifts nicely with no shudder now. Once the code pops up, it shifts odd, acts like it’s in neutral, goes into limp mode and so on.
My 2014 focus is throwing code P0844. It was dropping into neutral particularly at low speeds. I disconnected the lower cluctch actuator harness, cleaned it and put it back, cleared the code. It ran great for about two weeks and now the code is back, dropping into neutral and not shifting to 6th gear.
Did the code come back? Might be the tcm. Free at Ford till 2025 if that's the diagnosis there.
Thanks for the quick response btw, your videos are great. I was thinking about changing the actuator since cleaning the connector helped for two weeks and it’s a cheap part. Plus I could do it myself and not be out of a car for a month minimum, but I don’t know if replacing the actuator makes any sense at all with the symptoms and codes.
@27Jumper worth a shot, actuators won't always set codes when they fail. I'm glad the videos helped, thanks for watching
Today my daughters 2017 focus lost all gears and she cruised to a stop. I picked up the car and drove it home. Its acting like its skipping gears and has no power. I got a P2872 and P287A code. I cleaned the forks with brake clean and now it doesnt have reverse. Should I try a reset or adaptive learn before I replave the clutch and forks?
Hi, you can put the lower clutch actuator motor on top, and the top actuator on the bottom. If you get reverse back and lose forward, replace both actuators. If nothing changes, install a luk repset
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles Thank you for the reply Ben! I’ll do that later today and I ordered the clutch set last night and I’m currently downloading forscan.
Is it normal from 0 to 80 km speed , when I accelerate I feel it shifting gears 2,3 times i feel behind the wheel.
I have a 2017 Focus, and the trans seems to work well, it only has 53,000 miles on it. After driving it a while sometimes it seems to slip a little, especially when turning. Could it be low on fluid from the factory? Thanks for your great video.
Hi, low fluid level won't cause any noticeable concerns with clutch slippage. If theres no codes, you can try a manual adaptive learn. That's taken care of a cold 1-2 slip on mine. I've got a video for that. Note: 2017 and 18's are really bad about the clutch actuator motors failing, so thats another thing you can replace. OEM ones only
Ben
Can you confirm that there is no Warranty for the 2018 Focus. I understand this is a Design problem, if I replace the clutch will this happen again and again. Other comments seem to suggest that the failure will keep reoccurring.
Thanks Again Denton Aylor
Correct, no warranty.
I bought a 2014 Ford Focus Se about a year ago with seeming no issues. Sometimes the shifting was a little sluggish, but that was it. Recently I started to notice shuttering, mainly going from 1st to 2nd gear and then a few days later, I couldn't go in reverse, scanned it and had Code: P090C-00 Clutch Actuator B. After watching one of your videos, I was able to change both actuators myself, when I did it, I took that special tool and moved it back and forth with a little wd-40 to clear it from any dust or gunk, to my surprise they both move freely with no resistance after I was done, the car drove great and shifted better than ever for 2 weeks, then one day the shuttering came back and I lost reverse again, I read somewhere that after you replace the clutch actuators, a Ford Technician has to reset it with special tools, is that true? I'm trying to do everything myself if possible, and would be greatly appreciated. You're videos have been a blessing for me, thank you.
Hi, p090c indicates a tcm problem, free at the dealer until next year
I just took it to the Ford dealership and they told me that they want to start by replacing both clutches for $3000 and go from there. I'm suspicious, when I spun the forks, they moved great.
Thank you for your video's . I have a 2014 Titanium, with under 90.000 miles my issue is after going threw all the gears with no issues soon after it pops into neutral. I would appreciate any info on what mite be causing this issue.
Any fault codes? If not, my first thought is an issue with a clutch B actuator motor
Duel clutch
The issue I have on my 2012 focus is when going uphill and maintaining 20 to 35 mph the revs bounce by 500rpm like it can't figure out what gear to be in.
Other issue is the passenger wheel hopes from any start.
your rev cycling could be a failing clutch actuator (the 2 motors on the transmission) so you can replace both of those, and if that doesn't fix it, do a clutch and fork replacement. But first, if you see fluid leaking from the bell housing, that's more than likely causing the clutch slippage
The tire hop from a stop may be from bald tires. Not sure, I'd have to see
I have a 2012 and i lost 2nd, 4th, 6th and reverse. Code said stuck clutch b, clutch b actuator not working and a low voltage code. I was in the middle of cleaning a rusty ground and using the special tool to clean actuator b went i broke actuator b. The shaft out of the bottom of the transmission is now lose with no tension
Sounds like you'll need to replace the forks then. Might as well do the clutch and slave while you're in there. Also if your code was p090c that's typically a tcm problem. But with a clutch B stuck code (p287a?) Might of had a fork problem also
❤ thank you for helpful video... I have 2012 Ford focus automatic.. i have a transmission issue... Took to a dealer was charge a $ 1000 on a control module ..
3 months later still have a problem . I hear the control module shifting by itself when the engine is off ..
Also sometimes it cranking . Sometimes
It doesn't .. also it beeping transmissions overheating.. ..would you let me known
What exactly off the transmission symptoms. I loved my Ford focus with
A 289000 miles on it...the engine is still
Champion....thank you sir....
I'm glad the videos helped! Most commonly you'll need a clutch and fork replacement for an overheating clutch. Occasionally it's an actuator
my son just bought a 2014 a few months ago, it just now has random shuddering issues on take off, some days it doesn't do it all, some it does it multiple times a day, it has no trouble codes yet either
it did come with the warranty papers for the TCM i think...hope its covered, he can't afford a $3k clutch job
Unfortunately there's no more Ford clutch warranty past 7yr 100k miles from when the 1st owner bought the car. He can drive the car hard occasionally to mitigate the shudder. Or you guys can replace the clutch yourself for 700 bucks (buy a luk repset) I've got videos on how to replace it
Hi Ben, my daughter drives a 2015 Focus with 100k miles on it. Never an issue (was her grandpas new). Last week the engine light came on, car said tranmission was overheated and to stop and let sit for 5min. When restarted was shifting a little "jumpy" when accelerating. Took to the dealer and they said the TCM was bad and they replaced it but it needs a bunch of other stuff - complete rebuild for $3,500. Now we're trying to decide if all that really needs to be done and/or if it's worth doing or just time to replace her car? Note, there was not sign of an issue until this incident last week.. car did not shift strangely, no real sounds noticed. When it happened, she was on the freeway and said it was like the gas stopped working.
Any advise is much appreciated!
Hi, 100k miles is the approximate lifespan for the clutch and clutch forks in this transmission. With a new TCM and clutch job + fluid change, the car will be set for another 100k miles. The engine is unlikely to ever give you issues
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles Thanks for the reply Ben. One other question for you... they're saying after TCM replacement can feel excessive shutter, sign of clutch out of spec and needs replacement, recommend replacing clutch forks, throw out bearing, clutch and x2 actuator motors ($3,995 out the door). My question, it was not shuttering at all before I took it in. The transmission was showing none of the signs of wear until the incident last week where it jumped out of gear, flashed overheating warning, wouldnt start right and shifted funny with engine light on (all signs of TCM bad). Why would it now suddenly "shutter" when taking off? Trying to decide if I actually need to do all the work or if it's just their standard sales pitch when they replace the TCM on a Focus with 100k miles?
I just bought a 2014 Ford Focus hatchback and it feels like it slips from first to third as it goes from a stop sign there's a problem with the transmission with a code show up on the dash?
Hi it won't always set a code but usually. With a jump when slowing down it may be a bad tcm which is free until 2025 at the dealer if it's the issue
So essentially the TCM in 2016 + cars has been updated, so i'd only really have to worry about the clutches and actuators?
Yes. Late 2016, and all 17 and 18
Hi! I'm having some issues with my 2013 focus. At first the shudder, now I'm hearing a horrible noise & I do sometimes think I feel it slipping. I have codes & was wondering if you would be able to steer me in the right direction to get this resolved. I don't want to replace the wrong part & it not fix my issue.
Hi, what codes? If you want to record the noise you can post it on my Facebook or discord group
I have a 2014 focus hatchback that is out of warranty. I originally had a shudder and bucking problem that was fixed by Ford when the warranty was still in effect. It ran fine for quite a while. Now it is making a loud "buzzing" noise on start up and when accelerating which dies down at idle. I had it to Ford for diagnosis and they said it needs a clutch job. I still have that shuddering not near as much but still there. I thought I read where it said the actuators are good for about 60,000 miles. Does that sound about right? Thank you and good video
You're welcome. New ford actuators should last a very long time. 100-200k + miles. Sounds like you need a clutch and fork job to smoothen out the rest of the shuddering. mine only shudders in 2nd gear here in Germany but it is an American spec 40k miles 2018 after a long drive when the temperature is warm, you all think it is the control mod? seems to do it more when raining or snowing, that led me to think it was the traction control but now that it is getting warm outside it does it only after longer drives 25+ miles in temps over 70 degrees, yup this is a strange one.
Hi, that may just be the clutch itself shuddering. Which can be lessened by driving the car hard occasionally

My parents have a 2017 Focus SE bought used with around 34,000 on the odometer, and it was apparent that the clutch pack was on its way out. At about 35,000 miles, the clutch pack and a leaky motor mount were replaced under warranty. We haven’t had any issues since, and we’ve just past 50,000 miles. If those trends continue, we should have to replace the clutch pack again at about 70,000 miles. What should I look out for?
When it starts shuddering again, just drive it hard occasionally to mitigate the shudder. Keep driving it until a clutch fork locks up, the clutch should last at least 100k miles
Hello,
I have a 2017 Focus that lately ive noticed when i accelerate out of a complete stop and the automatic transmission shifts into first gear it makes a gurgling sound and struggles a bit before fully shifting. It does not do that in any of the higher gears or when I am driving at highway speeds.
The Focus has just over 77K miles on it.
I dont have a lead foot when driving and tend to accelerate/brake accordingly as to try and get the most out of my Focus.
Any help with what could potentially be going on would be greatly appreciated!

Typical clutch shudder. In a safe manner, you can accelerate at full throttle several times (when merging on the freeway, etc) it will scrub the clutch and reduce shudder for a period of time. Good luck! Thanks for watching.

If I’m in any gear and lightly touch the throttle for less than 1000rpm, as the engine rpm settles back down I hear a grinding noise. Wouldn’t a new clutch repair this issue since it was here before?
Yeah sounds like it needs to go back there, they may have messed up the repair
I was cleaning my acutators on top and something popped out, I thought it was grease gunck, so as I was putting it all back together I found a washer with teeth on one end and I realized that the acutator no long snapped back after turning it counter clockwise. Took it for a test drive and the warning light came on for transmission over heat. Now it doesn't go forward only backwards and engine light came back on. Do I need to replace the transmission? I am unsure what that washer is you speak of. I'd love to see a picture of it, you can post it in my facebook group (link is on my channel) If you'd like. And since your fork doesn't snap back to the released position you'll need a clutch job with forks. Not the entire transmission. @BigBensCarsAndCycles hope I can ask for some advice, over the past 6 months I have had to replace the output speed sensor and both turbine speed sensors. each sensor failed on its own and gave a different code each time, I would replace the sensor and issue would be fixed, ohm readings would be different between old and new sensor. I replaced the 3 sensors within 3 months and 5-6k miles. then i got a code again for one of the turbine sensors and found new sensor failed, replaced again and then a few weeks later i got error for the other turbine sensor, again it failed and replaced and car is currently working. Could tcm be damaging the new sensors? parts were all oem motorcraft from Rock auto

Hi.. if you keep driving it with heavy shudder and engagement concerns, the clutch can overheat and leave you stranded.
We have a 2018 focus with some type of clutch issue... It is saying one of the clutch actuators is stuck... I think number 2 if I recall... It works better when it's warm out but we'll get some high revs while driving and then it catches,.. The last trip we took with it it flashed something on the dash that said trans hot pull over and cool down for 5 or 10 minutes.... I ended up towing the car the rest of the way home as it was less than a mile back to the house... When it said trans hot you could hear the actuators doing some kind of cycle and the engine would not start.... And in fact before we left town we had trouble getting it to start with the engine nearly cold... Had been sitting a couple hours at least... Like the engine would not turn over.... Not sure if this is signs of tcm failure or if the clutch or one of the actuators would be to blame... Thanks in advance for any insight you may be able to provide

How do I get them to replace TCM, I love my car, everything else is good. And this time I have to pay 500 for clutch. Lucky I have extended warranty. OMG
Hi. I feel your pain. I'd need to diag in person to be sure. If there aren't any lights or codes, it's probably a clutch issue. The tcm has to be bad to get replaced for free. The engine Vibration is caused by the upper engine mount. Clutch shudder is pretty much characteristic on these - driving the car in a spirited manner mitigates shudder. If you baby the car and drive in traffic all the time, that accelerates wear to the clutch.
ive read on some forums that the dealership wont do anything about the shuddering. are you saying that they will put in the new module as long as it is under 150k miles?

@@BigBensCarsAndCycles Thank you. Oil filter not leaking. Battery positive terminal a bit of corrosion, but still good contact. Cleaned 'er up. Grounds OK. Ordered a new relay.
Since I bought my brand new Focus from the dealership it’s been nothing but headaches. I have less than 70,000 miles and it’s been in with ford for repairs 8 times, sometimes as frequent as every 3000 miles. The last time it was in for repairs it had to be towed at my expense and took three months for the repairs to be completed.
I’m now outside of the warranty period and ford refuses to even look at the car without charging me. It seems to me that ford sold me a bad car, put bandaid after bandaid on it, each time claiming that it was the “latest and greatest fix” and assured me that this would resolve my issue, just long enough to get me outside of the warranty period.
I feel deceived, lied to, left out in the lurch by a company I for some reason trusted. I will never buy another ford in my entire life. If anyone has any tips or suggestions for me I’m happy to take them.
They've updated the design of the clutch several times, as well as transmission input shaft seals, and transmission programming. They haven't figured out how to actually fix the transmission yet. And they kept using this transmission for years for some reason. At least 8 years
Have you ever seen the clutch on it's own fail? If so what would that look like?
Hi, pretty rarely. Normally a fork fails first. I have a video for P2700 Teardown Inspection where that appears to be a major clutch failure
16 Focus SE 2.0 L I’ve found a used 5 speed manual transmission for $500 . It’s got 132 K miles . The 6 speed used also is $1700 and it’s for performance trim car the ST ? I can have the shop swap it out get the automatic transmission replaced? Is just spinning the gears not able to engage.. very bad now.
the 2.0 Fusion ecoboost engine may share the same bolt pattern for the bell housing as the focus ST. You may need to do a lot of custom work to get a manual transmission working in a Fusion. I don't believe I've seen a factory manual transmission fusion, so you'll have to do a lot of research to get the swap to work and get Forscan.
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles sorry I meant 16 Focus SE 2.0L
My car is a 2014 Ford Focus Hatchback, 84k miles. Car is currently at Ford. Quoted $2700 to replace clutch levers. I'm paying for it, will the car be worth keeping or am I going to run into more issues?
With a new clutch, forks and slave cylinder you should be set for a long time with only (maybe) occasional minor issues that are cheap. If the tcm has already been replaced that would be a bonus
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles The tech will be starting the work sometime this week, would he be able to tell if the TCM has been replaced? If I ask would they be willing to disclose that to me? The car has service records but a lot of it says unknown. From what I can see the electrical work has been done as well as Fuel system which I assume was from the recalls for the fuel lines? I've heard soo many bad things about this car but I really like it! It's just hard when I need reliability to trust the car given all the mixed information I have gotten about it.
@meganrenee1283 it's a good car that gets a bad reputation for its transmission. Yes the tech can get an idea of if the tcm has been done
Thank you for your replies! I was thinking of selling the car but I think I just might keep it.
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles My tech called yesterday saying that when they went in to replace the clutches they found the case was damaged as well. Is this normal for a repair like this? Looking at another $1,500
