Happy Birthday Su-metal.🎂 This was a fun one, so thanks to those who prioritised it and thanks David for watching and enjoying.
First off the song choice ... as you have read by now, they performed this mash up of 'Painkiller' and 'Breaking the Law' with Rob Halford at the APMAs a couple of months or so before this ... the songs were Rob Halford's choice.
In the interview after the event he said the BABYMETAL team had been very gracious and asked him to pick a song and they were going to do 'Breaking the Law' - but he was having so much fun working with them that he said "Let's do 'Painkiller' as well". He added that BABYMETAL are so professional and nothing is too hard that they made it work and that was a first time ever mash up of those two songs.
You got Yui and Moa mixed up - Yui was stage right. She is a bit more shy than Moa and always looked a little bit awkward with ad libbing and not being choreographed. Moa was stage left with the big smile and messing, having fun with Su when she went to her ... I don't doubt she would have piped up no problem if Su had offered her the mic.
I love that Su-metal immediately took her in ears out to hear the crowd sing and thanked them, telling them "You all have a beautiful voice".
Finally, yes good on Chad Smith (or Chadmetal) and the RHCP for acknowledging BABYMETAL and giving Su-metal (also Yui and Moa clearly appreciated it just as much) this special moment.

Happy birthday to our beloved queen SuMetal, thanks for sharing this moment with all of us, The One, double party for me since a couple of days, pardon me 🥳🎊🎂🎈❤️⚽
And of course Rob Halford is proud of them for this cover, they performed this same medley together before, clash of Metal God and the Fox God.🦊🤘🔥
The "See you!" at the end is without a doubt one of their trademark when finishing every live concert, just like the "We Are BabyMetal!" that is a line borrowed from X-Japan.

It really shows how tiny these girls are. Chad metal looked like a giant in comparison. As for Su. Her singing was to a pace faster than she is used to, in a language she is still learning at the ripe old age of 16. In a country alien to her, on a stage she had to improvise moves not choreographed for her, in front of an audience that mostly came for another band filled with big hairy tattooed culturaly different grown men. Did I mention this tiny fragile teenager had yet turned 16 without family or friends with words to help. Yui, Moa and Su are unbelievably brave to perform as second fiddle to one of the worlds most recognizable bands and then to have all captured on cell phones to be critiqued around the world with the shitiest of audio quality to go with it. The fact that it still sounded good but not great, was for my ears freaking awesome. Love these girls and all they have achieved thus far and hoping for many more in the year's to come. Love your reaction videos too.

  • @schneider1112
    @schneider1112 Před rokem +13

They have said "See you" ever since their very first concert back in Sakura Gakuin, before BABYMETAL became independent. Same with the fox sign, they have been consistent since day 1. There are moments during their choreography where they do fun things between each other, but you have to look for them, or check a compilation of them. Usually making faces at each other, but Moa has also pinched Su's ear during Gimme Chocolate at least once. They also have fun while ending concerts. By the way, Su more or less improvised at Download 2018 during Kagerou.
They have practiced and performed choreography since they were like 9, that IS what they enjoy. Understanding the background of the girls makes it clear that this isn't an ordinary band. Su and Moa are very close, especially since Yui left. It would be cool and a lot of fun seeing your face if you checked the BABYMETAL guide (updated) or performances from Sakura Gakuin, it'would be waaay different from your usual videos.

This video has teared me up before the times I have seen it due too how much happiness of another side of Babymetal with more Kami band interaction and the cake reveal. Also, just winging it more and kindness shown overall.

  • @shawn4819
    @shawn4819 Před rokem +52

I'm only going to say a couple things because I said enough when I requested this.
First, I've said many times I wish they would be able to interact with the band. I'm on record saying the 3 seconds of Boh and Su headbanging is one of my favorite babymetal moments. In Breaking The Law she goes over to Mikio while he's hopping around and tries to interact with him as well. This video is proof that Su could be a great frontwoman for a band if she wasn't constricted by the choreography.
Second, I've never said Su is the best singer ever like I've heard others say. She offers a lot more on stage though to make her a better performer than most. I'm fairly certain you had more to say about her voice here but I think she does a good job on these songs while clearly struggling a little bit to sing completely in English. That makes your suggestion that she go on tour doing covers of English songs a little tough.
Third, saying that the end with Chad has nothing to do with Babymetal is wrong. The energy that they have on stage and the attitude of everyone in team Babymetal(the girls, band and management) has to be part of the reason bands want to be on stage with them. RHCP have done this twice, Korn did it. Rob Halford and Dragonforce have special performances with them. Babymetal even did this themselves during Meta Taro with Sabaton and Galactic Empire. They aren't the most well know band but they do have knack for connecting with other bands.

I also don’t think she has the Greatest Voice Ever in terms of sheer vocal ability - however, with respect to her ability or not to tour covering English songs, I don’t think this video is a fair representation of what she could do since 1) her English has gone a lot better since and 2) she’s only now reaching vocal maturity, she’s much more stable than she was back then, when you hear the struggle at times when she was reaching for notes really out of her comfort range

Thanks again from Japan 有難う 💛。 Speaking of interaction between the girls and Kamis, I saw friendly short contacts at Budokan, last year. For example, the girls imitated to play masked BOH's bass by reaching out their hands to the strings at the end-all of a show 😄. There is always reason for anything. The reason why RHCP posted a message after the tour with BM in May 2017 "chilipeppers Back on the road. Missing our partners in crime babymetal". And the reason why Moa called them "like uncles in my relatives". Friendly tie with decent respect is the answer. Japanese fans all the time appreciate RHCP's heartwarming way to make BABYMETAL a part of their shows.😍

I am of the Woodstock generation of 1969, and since the late 70's I have found rock music (mainly what is called metal) to be fake, and I don't listen to it much anymore. I was looking for a free atmosphere at rock music concerts, and I have not been able to feel that much since the 80's. However, it is a very strange experience to be fascinated by Babymetl, which is like a play in a sense, choreographed on a complete scenario, and to feel the authenticity of Babymetal's live performance, which is like a piece of art.
It was a pleasure to see their free performance at this Su-Metal Birthday concert. By the way, Mr. Mori, who played their teacher at Sakura Gakuin, said something interesting on his radio show. Mr. Mori, who knew the girls well before their rise to stardom, said that as Babymetl became bigger and bigger, he couldn't go see them on stage for a while. He hesitated to go because he was afraid that the girls, who were still very young, would become puppets for the adults in the BABYMETAL project. However, when he saw BABYMETAL on stage at Tokyo Dome for the first time in several years after they became big, he was so happy that he shed tears because he strongly felt that the girls had shown their true personalities and had become their BABYMETAL.

The APMA's wanted to put Babymetal and Rob Halford, for one of there ward shows, Koba metal, BM's manager, who is a fan of Judas Priest, jumped at the chance. And they did this medley, and most peopl thought that it was the only time that you'd hear Babymetal play these songs.
How the support tour with RHCP's came about, was because both bands happened to be playing the sam festival in Japan. And RHCP's, always on the look out for something new and different, happened to catch Babymetal playing, and thought they were so good they wanted them to support RHCP on their world tour. Babymetal agreed, but for the UK leg only. This show was an extra date, as they had played the O2 earlier on the UK leg, which was sold out on both dates, so they added this extra show. And this show was the only one that they did this, BM had come out in Manchester and danced to one of RHCP's songs. They did do a few dates in the US together as well, with 2 other RHCP members + Chad, joining them on stage for Give Me Choco.
By the way it was Yui stage right and Moa stage left. I was at the show, and it was great to see Su be Su for once.
If your idea ever came about, I'd like Su to sing a Siouxsie and the Banshees song.

  • @BlazinNSoul

Yep, and Rob Halford wants to do another collaboration from what I hear. You should also check out the interview with Korn's production manager. They talk about when they surprised Babymetal on stage.
Then joining them in a now legendary performance. Think there was some mention of a possible tour as well which I hope comes true. Anyways Babymetal's latest Devine Attack-Shingeki and Monochrome you should check out.
Loudersound had it as one of the best metal songs of 2022 in a recent poll. Ladies have really come well into their own now. The new album drops on March 24, 2023. Followed by a tour with Sabaton in April. So 2023 looks to be a good start. 🤘🦊💕

There has been some interaction in the past, there is a compilation you can find where you can see Moa and the drummer Hideki making faces during songs xD
About the Masks, we know who is under the masks: there are tatoos, personalized guitars, hair style etc that give away pretty clearly who is playing :)
About covers, they stopped covers of other bands after the 3rd album came out. They used to do a lot of them at the beginning because they didn't have enough songs to do a complete setlist, and they gradually stopped after they started having enough songs.
Just a small correction: stage right was Yui, and left was Moa! Moa smiles all the time :D
There is an interview with Rob Halford after they performed together at the APMA 2016, and he was indeed really proud :)
The "see you" was a finale of them back in the days, but they don't do it anymore nowadays!
About "Painkiller" winning the prioritizing request, I bet there are a part of BM fanbase that voted for that, knowing you would get this and another request involving this song 🤣🤣

Happy 25th Birthday 🎉🎊🎈 to Queen Su-Metal which falls on the 20th of December 1997. David, you should react to the collaboration by Rob Halford & Babymetal at APMA.
Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith performed with Babymetal at their weekend show in London.
The Japanese trio supported Red Hot Chili Peppers on their UK tour and at last night’s (December 18) gig at the O2 Arena, Smith performed a drum solo as part of Babymetal’s set.
After a performance of Gimme Chocolate, Babymetal exited the stage and the arena was plunged into darkness - which was when Smith slipped unnoticed onto the stage and behind the kit, replacing Hideki Aoyama and performing a solo disguised as a member of the Kami Band wearing corpse paint and white clothing.
Babymetal then closed their set with Smith playing on their Judas Priest medley of Painkiller and Breaking The Law.
"I think BABYMETAL are one of the most unique metal experiences in the world right now. Not only their appearances, and their style and everything that surrounds them visually but they’re an incredible band as well. I met the band a couple of years ago in America and they’re so passionate about metal, they know everything about metal music and they’ve created a very special feeling and experience within the entire world of metal. They work extremely hard to create something unique and I think it’s paying off and they’re doing such an amazing job. In fact, I was watching the new music video for ‘Starlight’ and even with one member leaving, they still sound great.”
In 2016, Halford joined BABYMETALfor their appearance at the 2016 Alternative Press Music Awards in Columbus, Ohio. He performed two PRIEST classics“Painkiller” and “Breaking The Law”.
“That was really intense; BABYMETAL give a thousand percent just like PRIEST,” Halford said in a statement after the performance. “They’re leading the charge into the new frontier of heavy metal.”
“It was really amazing and fantastic,” BABYMETAL‘s Su-Metal said. “A collaboration with Rob Halford, the ‘Metal God,’ has always been my dream. I never imagined that dream would come true!”

Another great reaction, David! Quality, totally "fan quality" content, but great that it is out there for us to enjoy! Agreed, the Chili Peppers get serious props for their work with Babymetal. As has been mentioned, they did do both songs with Rod Halford at the AMP music awards show. The sound (and video) quality is much better, though the camera operators do not film where you would like them to all the time. My thought is that this is done after that event because they had to learn the songs for that show...and played them again here. You will once again see Su and the girls having a great time with Rob in that video...and I highly suggest that you do through that reaction in soon while it is still fresh. The Kami band nailed the music, as you will hear if you check that out. I believe that the link has been posted...but here it is again: czcams.com/video/TD85aM0VQ3o/video.html. This link is the full Babymetal appearance, they open with "Karate", then Rob joins them of the two songs you just heard. Not a great crowd for their music, but the quality and fun factor is definitely worth seeing. Hope you decide to dive in! Merry Christmas to both you and the Mrs. David!

Wow, the BABYMETAL haters are not going to love you this month.
I'm not convinced of your idea about Su doing a solo tour with the Kami band. But what I do like about it is that it's proof that you appreciate and respect Su as a singer, that's great. And of course we can't talk about interaction between the girls and the band without giving you a link to this: czcams.com/video/QZGjuByuHlE/video.html . Those are precious moments, also Su playing air-guitar during the solo in Breaking The Law or rocking out with BOH. Seeing them unbound by choreography for a change is so much fun. And it's proof to haters that they are not a bunch of casted girls forced to do something on stage that they have absolutely no interest in. In addition to that, the whole show, especially Chad bringing the cake, is also a sign that BABYMETAL are respected among big names in the music scene like the Chili Peppers. For me as a big BABYMETAL fan that's always touching to see.
I love how you always take a look at the whole thing, not just the song as such. Very much appreciated!
The "See you" at the end has become a little rare recently. My guess is that it started as an easy to learn, internationally understood phrase for the young girls to close their shows with, back when their English was very limited.

  • @smashstuff86

I think the reason they did this cover was because they already learned it for their performance with Rob Halford. It was probably the easiest two songs for Chad to sit in on.

Great reaction and fun video. I agree with everything you said here and also want to add that I love that Su took out her in ears when the crowd starting to sing, that was a great touch. Also before they head off stage she said the crowd had a beautiful voice too. It was nice for her to acknowledge the crowd like that.

Stage right was Yui. One can tell from the face and the glove on her right hand. Besides, the girl on stage left rocks out more. That alone identifies Moa. Not having a choreography to execute seems to be a problem for Yui. She is not good at improvising on stage.
BABYMETAL performed those two songs together with Rob Halford live. That's the reason they were able to perform the two songs again. Nothing more to it.
You got the third song you were hoping for. Sort of.
They always say "see you" when they march of at the end of a concert. At least they used to as long as Yui was part of the band. They did not at Budokan 2021. But you cannot exactly march of that particular stage.

I agree they need to have more interaction with the Kami band but, as you noticed, that is going in the wrong direction. I wouldn't want them to be too much of a normal band however. I like them almost exactly the way they are. It's more like, I wish they would at least acknowledge the band exists once in a while.

I think it would be a big step up if BM was officialized as a band. Give them more creative freedom and involvement from the musicians. But that never was the production's intentions to be fair. But BM would surely benefit on a bigger scale from an official recognition as an actual band. Amuse can handle distribution and just let BM spread wings they already have a considerable market.

Great Reaction -although Moa and Yui got you by not being where you expected them, that was Yui on Stage Right caught off guard by the mike, and Moa rocking out with Su on Stage Left. Rob Halford is a huge Babymetal fan and the medley was a reprise of a performance they did with Rob Halford at an awards show earlier that same year. Having seen the original I can say my one disappointment with this version was the original version with Halford got Yui and Moa far more involved in Breaking the Law than they were here. But yeah the Chad Smith part at the end with the cake is the highlight of this particular version and what makes it so great, agree with everything you said about him and the RHCP..

Nice reaction. This was cool Especially since Dec 20 is her Birthday. Happy Birthday Su-metal. Many times, folks have referred to this as the day Su-metal became Suzuka Nakamoto for a moment on stage. Many folks including their producer say Su is different on stage. Koba even said she's a bit scary. So, to see her gasp and just be a kid for a moment was extra special. Next seeing her interact with Boh was cool and I too wish Babymetal as whole could do that more. And on that note. Su going on tour without Moa at this point is highly unlikely. Su has commented about how much she relies on Moa in interviews. Especially after Yui left which Su has comment how hurt she was when that happened. Moving on. How big of an influence was Rob? He told them to stay metal. And they have. That could be a big part of it. When covid started they changed the message on their web page to Stay Safe Stay Metal. I would say he had an effect on them.
There are some more clips of Su without choreography. Before they came out with the choreography for kagarou. Su did that as a solo with no choreography. as for letting them break from the routine. Over the years it's been Moa who has done that the most. While interacting with the audience Moa has left the choreography. That kind of stuff usually is left out of the videos because they want you to see the dance routine.
On another note, something that was cool to see during this tour with RHCPs. Was Boh and Flee on stage together. Amazing. Those two had too much fun. There's some more cell Cam footage of that on youtube somewhere. I would like to see them do a cover album. Since Su and Moa's English has gotten so much better over the years it would be easier for them now. On this video even though the audio was bad you can hear Su's accent loud and clear. Today this song would sound a lot different just from her improvement with English. Is it weird to do a cover album as your 5th album? More special guest time. Depending on what songs they did I think box office sales might get broken. Su did a Metal Jam Project (a jam session in Japan held in a small club) appearance in Babymetals early days. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any video of it. Only audio. But Su is sing with other metal artists in Japan at the time. Meaning there's Su (who I think she was around 15 at the time) on stage just singing her heart out. If anyone has any video of that please post it. Although it wasn't a tour Su did perform metal songs without Yui and Moa. And just as Su-metal. It may be a case of been there done that and she wants Moa and Yui with her. It's probably been a lot easier to go through everything Babymetal went through and still goes through at times having them with her. Nothing like having a good support group. One Last thing. That was Yui who gave Su the look of what am I supposed to say. She does finally sing it but its real low in the crappy audio. when you get to know her voice more you can pick it out. Moa was on the other side this time with the big smile. IMO you don't have to give Moa any directions on stage. She's a natural up there. She will dance, sing and interact with everyone all on her own. Like when she has goofy face contest with the drummer. They thought no one noticed but we caught that footage from a festival appearance.

Edit to add: With some exceptions - if its one of their big production live shows with a cinematic or theatrical story (such as Baptism XX), they may not do it, but its standard for a normal show.

A couple of comments. Probably the reason you don't have much interaction between the band and the girls is that the girls were so young when they started and they were from such a completely different environment that it wouldn't have worked . The girls were just 13 and had only performed with sakura gakuin who never had a band. So it wouldn't have worked early and by the time they got old enough the inertia of the band being so successful with the given format made changing it impractical. But you can see every now and then they do interact and both sides seem to have an appreciation for the other side.
As far as Sue going on tour doing female lead bands that might be hard. Su is a great vocalist but someone like Janis comes from a blues background. Su sings straight as a razor. I've never heard anyone sing with so much precision and focus. It cuts through the band really well. Blues and Rock are a completely different set though with bends and vibrato and feel. Su has no experience with any of that. Not that she's not one of my favorite singers but it takes a lifetime to get that feel of bending a note up a quarter tone or more. Even hearing how clean she sings judas priest is a little bit uncomfortable. She is so clean and precise. I'm just not sure she could do a lot of that stuff that calls for dirty notes and flat fives. It's just not something she knows enough about. Who knows though, with a great teacher she night get it quicker than I think.

There are many videos out there showing them making silly faces to each other.
Koba is a known metalhead, so I wouldn't doubt it if he likes Judas Priest. As the one who created BM, he was responsible for introducing the girls into Metal. If I remember correctly, they were given metal albums by him, from different genres and bands, to listen to as a homework of sorts, and then they would discuss all the songs, analyse them and debate what and why was done in each song.
If you remember that the girls, especially Su, came from an Idol/Pop background, that's what I would call dedication! 🤘🏻🦊🤘🏻

I don't think Koba has the intention to make BM an actual band but who knows. The western audience would be trilled if the kami band was made official members of BM but that's not the direction they want to take it seems.

Thanks for doing this reaction, after all it's Su-metal's birthday today, so nice fit !
Rob Halford did perform this same mashup of Breaking The Law and Painkiller. at APMA in 2016, you might want to react to that as well.
We very much know who is under the masks, just as we did when it was just make up, but we can't see their facial expressions, with the masks: which is the sad part.
While it would be fine to see Suzuka perform a ... I don't know, Dolly Parton song, I think instead what we'll just have to let Babymetal evolve, I suspect now the girls, no young women, aren't in school anymore (which they seems to still have been fairly recently). they might do some solo sight projects. What we do know is Suzuka does Karaoke regularly singing songs in any genre, for hours often alone. Just trying styles/genres as she pleases.
It's possible at least, but again I think Babymetal will get the the ladies more and more involved in everything over time. They already rule the stage when it comes to the day of performance. For years now (for example I remember 2013, before their first world tour, their first trip outside of Japan as Babymetal) they've politely (not like some divas...) asked the Babymetal staff to change things on stage. We already know Su-metal has already written the lyrics of one song on the upcoming album.
16:20 Yuimetal is far to shy and a perfectionist who wants everything to be prepared to just start singing any song.
19:05 this would be Moametal, she is faaaar more into improvising on stage than Yuimetal, so in that sense, now Yuimetal has left, Babymetal is far more flexible.
You could really see Yuimetal struggle with these moments, she loves the meticalliously planned shows/performances.
The hard core fans are artists at spotting when Babymetal or the Kami band do these things during regular shows and because it's less rare (but happens at least ones every show) we enjoy it maybe even more.
Musically Judas Priest is less of an influence, but Rob Halford is one of those metal legends who has been very vocal about supporting Babymetal.
Babymetal performed with Rob Halford at the APMA's earlier that year and Chad had been practicing the song the whole week.
Red Hot Chili Peppers enjoyed Babymetal so much on their tour in the UK that they took them on tour in the US as well.
But RHCPs wasn't the first to perform with Babymetal, others include some of the members of Korn as well.
27:57 "you have a beautiful voice" - as Babymetal has limited abilities in English, especially then compared to now, especially when put on the spot like this, it has been theorized: maybe this is what people tell Su-metal behind the scenes as thus these specific words in English are what came to her. But pure speculation of course.
The See You was a staple, but not common anymore.

100% agreed about the band interaction thing. It would also be nice for Su and Moa to interact a little more directly outside of rehearsed moves. It does happen, but not that much. Also, a little more interaction with the Avengers would have been nice. I think a lot of fans would like to see more human moments - it wouldn't detract from the disciplined, tight running of the show at all. They're too professional and experienced for that.
As for masking and hiding the Kami Band, Koba does make the occasional fucking stupid decision, IMO.

First there is a live version of Karate, performed by BabyMetal and then you have an introduction video for the collaboration. Please check your list of requests, I felt sure it had been requested by several people.
I don't know if you noticed but there were cameras in the area between stage and crowd barriers, so there maybe a pro shot version of this but I don't know if it was ever released by RCHP?

Love your reations. Im going to disagree with having Su go out without the choreography and here is why. Su is not an American or British. She grew up and is comfortable with this environment and its what she loves. Having her do a tour without the choreographywould be as sily as having Rob Halford and Judas priest try to do the choreography. She can have fun on a couple of tracks but it not what she loves. She loves the choreography andd the fact that she can let loose every once in a while doesnt mean she would be comfortable doing a whole tour that way. Like I say it would be like expecting Rob Halford to do choreography. Halphord helped to invent heavy metal but dont forget that Su metal virtually invented Kawaii Metal. I wouldnt ask her to abandon the style she is most comfortable with to come out on stage to pretend to be American. What is she going to have a low cut blouse and shorts that outline her crotch. No she is fine just where she is at.
