Welcome back to BabyMetal's journey, David.
We got another banger for Japanese festival or any festival around, they performed this at The Babyklok Tour in the US in all the cities they've been around, they did the same at Aftershock, Louder Than Life and just recently at BMTH festival in Japan getting the crowd going bonkers with this.
The live debut was at Apocrypha - Another One exclusive show prior to the track release, it was fun and totally unexpected, everyone was having a blast and even started with a Kami Band solo after a while without it.
There's a live proshot version at Summer Sonic Festival in Osaka released recently but it's heavily blocked so pretty sure you won't get that here. You'll notice some slight difference between the live and the studio album, especially the crowd participation.
The song title is Metali!! (metal + matsuri, which is a Japanese festival) and you can hear it in the spoken section when MomoMetal is doing the Kabuki moves style.
Just so you know "wasshoi" is another shout used in Japanese festivals when men are carrying the shrine, similar to sore and soya in Megitsune and Karate. The traditional Japanese instrument you can hear in the beginning is a shamizen, also used in Megitsune.
I can totally see why they pick Tom Morello on this, the groove, the catchiness, the super energetic jump and those typical 90's vibes at funk or alternative metal live concerts.
Thanks for sharing this and see you next time.🦊🤘🎸

It's exactly this. Just saw them for a third time, hadn't heard this one beforehand, and the crowd absolutely went wild. There were girls in the upper deck with us screaming despite being like 25-30, and the crowd absolutely got low. Even the bouncers were visibly turning around and being like wtf is this?

Thanks again from Japan 有難う 💛。I am sure you would prefer live rendition to this MV because at the actual venues, this song followed after an intro by Western (American) Kami Band's cool instrumental solos. I appreciate the devoted performance by two guitarists (Chris and CJ), one drummer (Anthony) and TWO bassists (Ryan Neff and Clint Tustin).
This song was one in the setlist that was performed in the North American tour (total 29 gigs in Aug. thru Oct.) with Dethklok and kept blasting the audience at every venue. So did gain it in the four shows in Nex Fest in Japan.
The title is a synthesized word from two words : "Metal" and "Matsuri 祭 (festival)" → Metali. I witnessed this song live three times at three different venues in Japan . I got hyped like an idiot in the simplicity of this song. Momometal's extravagant elocution and moves in Kabuki style (and her growl in live show) gave an amazing accent in the exciting repetitiveness. The repetitive わっしょい "Wasshoi" is a call or yell used in Japanese Matsuri (festival) to intensify people's excitement and especially to encourage the power of guys who are carrying a heavy Mikoshi (神輿) on their shoulder that is a kind of a float in Western style festivals.

They performed it several times live. But no recut and cleaned footage until now. Only smartphone videos by fans. Live version has some different features. After the slapstick part of Momoko in the video before Tom Morello is on the screen (solo comming from track) she calls for action and is even growling. After this the whole crowd goes mad like in the other really big songs of them. Momoko former avenger was made as regular new 3rd member.

glad you picked up on the traditional instruments. as far as i heard Tom Morello was the one that asked to colab with them in any way. like others have said you have to understand Japanese traditions to truly understand this song and the video. and others have said this video is like a training video to show what the crowd should do live. this song like a few others is to me high energy live to get the crowd going. i am glad also you understand you can never put Babymetal in a box because once you think you do they go and do something totally different.

Really interesting to listen to your perspective on this song David, I pretty much agree with you on literally everything, when I first heard the audio I was just blown away to the point I didn't know how to feel about the song (I loved the song it was just hard to process the elements as you said) just like the first time I heard Gimme Chocolate for example, like it has something you would commonly see and listen like the traditional instruments and has call backs to MEGITSUNE even but it just hits different but sounds BABYMETAL, like my mind just gets blown away, also because it's been more than 10 years as well, like their writers have some heavy bars man but as you said the unknown skill/ability to work with music in such an intriguing way while delivering quality it's something that only BABYMETAL can craft and make it their sound signature pratically, every BM song I listen I genuinely can't think about it as something from other band, I can't explain but there is some kinda of mysterious sound that only BABYMETAL can produce. We had simple and complex song in pratically all of their albums, some better than others, all this experimentation and at some point I would be starting to think: Ok, how far can they go? How diverse their music can be at this point? And well... They are still going lol just nonstop, and it's crazy that even the most simple songs always maintain a very decent quality from a songwriting standpoint as well. I know I'm probably being super biased here but BABYMETAL just knows how to work with their thing in music man, and for music in general it's not just J‐pop and METAL as you said it's something way more complex as out of the box, literally taking something and innovating with it, I think the same, I have this same vision. I have to say they are probably the most consistent band at their own craft, always a surprise I just love this band so much, they are definitely something else and will have an incredible career still. 🦊🤘

"Wasshoi! Wasshoi! Wasshoi! Wasshoi!“ Good reaction. I'm hoping you did get to see them and you saw for yourself that the live performances of this have been completely wild and the crowds on the US and Canada tour were going nuts! 🤘🤪🤘
This is what Tom Morello had to say about this collaboration:
"I am a big fan of BABYMETAL, a band that is both power rocking and constantly surprising with dizzying musical twists and turns. I've been trying to work with them for some time and when they sent me the demo of 'Metali!!' I knew I could rock that shit like crazy!"
This is the first song and video released since Momometal was revealed as the new third member - and she even got her own solo section in the middle with her Kabuki Theatre part.
The song title translates as 'Metali' (or 'Metari') which is a fusion of the words metal and matsuri (festival). The song is about a Metal Village holding a metal festival, so they have included all the matsuri shouts everybody would be calling out as encouragement to the people carrying heavy floats etc like "Sore, Sore", "Dokoisho" and "Wasshoi!".
They are inviting us all to dance - I am reliably informed there is something in the lyrics (Su sings it and it is in Momometal's kabuki section) about we are all idiots or fools - the idiots who watch and the idiots who dance ... so as we're all here and we're all idiots why just watch, we may as well all dance.

Now that Momometal has been added to the group, they are back to being a trio again and it opens up a whole new spectrum with Momometal's unique talents and voice added to the mix. Excellent reaction! Thanks, David.
Very happy on that score and I totally agree. Make music that stands out for being totally different from everything else is very rare these days.
"Metali" (metari) = "metaru" (metal) + "matsuri" (traditional Japanese summer festival). So it's a "matsuri" influenced song and it's all about hyping the crowd and inviting them to dance and sing along. It has several connections to "Megitsune" both in the lyrics (chants, etc.) and the music video itself. Like when they clear the tatami by kicking aside the tea sets. In "Megitsune" they get rid of the kimonos by pulling the "obi" (kimono sash). They are apparently telling us that they put aside the more restrictive and elitist traditions in favor of the more popular and inclusive ones.
Musically, it's very groovy and funky. I love Su's clean yet aggressive vocals here. Really cool collaboration with Tom Morello who commented this: "I am a big fan of BABYMETAL, a band that is both power rocking and constantly surprising with dizzying musical twists and turns. I've been trying to work with them for some time and when they sent me the demo of 'Metali!!' I knew I could rock that shit like crazy!".
And I'm very happy for Momoko on her first song and music video as an official member and also for her feature on that kabuki (traditional Japanese Theater) style interlude
    Until next time!

The genius of this song is Momo and the Kamis integrating Kabuki elements to it, but adding like a groove that's almost House of Pain-esque to it and having choreography that's out of this world.
Easily one of the songs where the dancing itself made me go "ok holy shit those moves are awesome." The opening part where they're like doing the Egyptian neck thing, and then the shuffle step thing they do during the verse.
    This song is wild.

So judging by the comment about going to the LA show do you record these a month before uploading? I went and looked up that show to see if Morello did play with them live, unfortunately it looks like not (but he gets a video segment just like all their other collaborators). It's a banger of a song live (as I'm sure you witnessed by now).
I love how Babymetal just continues to push the envelope of combinations and things that just "shouldn't work", even 13 years in as another commenter pointed out below. They never get old! These are the reasons there are no words that can describe how profound and important they are and I'm so glad to be here for this and finally got to see them myself this year.

Loved your perceptive and analytical approach. It is always nice to have a reactor with a certain amount of musicianship.
Many of the other comments here already pointed to the existing live footage out there, so I don't need to. The song and the video are indeed packed with references to traditional Japanes culture, at the same time playing the devil with them. Just look how casual they kick the tea tablets out of the way to get more room for dancing. I'm usually not one to endorse the abuse of good hardware, but have to admit that this is really cool.
If you want o know more about the cultural connections, I can highly recommend the analysis and walkthrough done by Prof. Andrew Hartley here on YT. He is not only a fan, but speaks Japanese, lived in Japan for a while and has a Japanes mother in law who can fill in on the finer details of tradition. He has analysed about 40 BM songs in this way. The videos I watched have always broadened my understanding and deepend my apreciation of that particular song, so yesterday I decided to go back to #1 and watch them all.
Loved your shirt, BTW. This May, I saw Babymetal supporting Sabaton in Cologne, so I almost got two headliner shows for the price of one. And having Lordi in between didn't hurt, either.
    Greetings from Germany!

The song...yeah, it was wild for me when I watched the video first..broke my brain, and the middle bit with Momo doing her thing confused the hell out of me, but overall I enjoyed it. Nice reaction. The video starts out feeling like Megitsune part two. With them in the traditional Japanese style house. Then like Megitsune they break out of it. In this case they dance right out of the house. Lyrically the song is about going to music festival and dancing like a fool and if you don't dance then you're a fool for not dancing with everyone else because we're all fools at music festivals. Babymetal just having a good time and wanting everyone to have a good time too. Tom said he's wanted to work with them for a long time. When they sent him a demo for this song. He felt like he could rock it out. I too hope they get to play this together with an extended ending. For their live shows they've been doing a kamiband intro for this song. Very cool. The first time they played this live was the same day it was released. It's not on their album. So, no one had heard it yet. The crowd still went crazy for it. All these years later and Babymetal is still finding ways to make their music interesting and fun. While also finding ways to surprise their long time fans. No one expected a new song to drop during their tour. That's new for them too. The foxhole is deep and full of surprises

I didn't expect that high of a score, but as a BABYMETAL fan, I'm not complaining. :-) Saying that it's unlike anything you have heard before is a pretty great compliment!
I saw you frown a bit during the spoken middle part, and I understand that. Many elements of this song are easier understood if you are familiar with Japanese culture - the whole matsuri (festival) theme, the shrine, the masks, the shamizen... And the spoken part is a nod to Kabuki theatre - which is interesting, because that's a purely male domain. You'll find this a lot in this song and the video: The tea tables getting kicked over, the hands crashing through the shouji doors, the female Kabuki voice - and of course the Shamizen leading into Metal beats. They are honoring the traditions while at the same time not letting themselves be bound by them and enhancing them with new elements - which in itself is a very Japanese way of handling things.

I’m glad you reviewed this song. As opposed to their other new songs from their recent album. This song marks the beginning of their new chapter. A few things to take note of this song live that you might find interesting. They have a Kami band intro for this one; it’s not the best, but being the first song entering a new chapter, it is a good indication they might be going to give them a bigger spotlight going forward. Second; during that “kabuki” skit with the new girl, Momo, they have the whole crowd sit down before she starts. Once she says “Metali” the second time, she does a legit “Are you ready!?” in growled vocals before the Tom Morello solo and the crowds jump up and go nuts. Now that part with Momo is on a backtrack. But as I said before; being their first song for this new chapter, the fact they introduce Momo with her voice being used for harsh vocals on the official live track is an indication they are experimenting with the idea of her bringing that element in their future music. Why they didn’t include it in the studio version? I suspect they wanted to see how the fans would react during the live shows; and might I say, we went crazy.
Also to add to your statements about them going metalcore. They have been experimenting with those elements in The Other One. Maya and Monochrome respectively I think. There old material focused a lot more on speed and power metal as their foundation to branch off from, but in this new chapter I think they might be leaning more towards experimental metalcore with their sound. Which I am all for it. I love how Babymetal can be both unique with their sound while also adapting to new elements in the genre and be relevant. It’s smart marketing in Koba’s part.
Someone needs to recommend Metalizm though. I bet you will be confused about that one.

    • @actuallynotsteve
      @actuallynotsteve Před 8 měsíci +1

Oh yeah I forgot that Momo did the Korn ARE YOU READYYYYY during the live set. This song is 100% written to be a live track, it absolutely slays the live crowd.
Everybody got low, and while I missed the bigger feature of the Kami Band, and love the current Kami Band, they were pressed for time on this tour because of Dethklok. I couldn't believe they opened for them, Babymetal is by far the bigger band, but it is what it is.
Monochrome, Maya, Metali, Metal Kingdom, and Metalizm are all just absolute bangers from this album. The new era of Babymetal is here, and I'm so excited that they chose to give us more. I loved the old era, and it was a lot of fun, but this has the potential to become one of the biggest live shows on Earth. Not just for metal fans, but for music fans.
Their message is just so great, so needed, and I legit got emotional seeing a lot of dudes my age with their 8, 10, 15 year old daughters losing their minds because Su or Moa or Momo Metal are their hero and like the reason they want to just rock the fuck out.
It's just positivity in all the ways the world needs it right now.

David I know you may be tired of the comments on your scoring system but I had an idea that makes much more sense to me. Hear me out . I think you should implement a logarithmic scoring system. This means that the scoring has very little variation on the low end with more variation on the high end. I say this because people are recommending these videos to you so the cha ces that the song is bad is a lot less than it is a good song. So having 4 or 5 degrees of badness isnt really needed. Just perhaps 2. 3 would be your mediocre score. This would give you more ability to judge the good songs from 4 being just good to 10 being perfection while still allowing you to distinguish between a 1 and a 2 for bad songs. Given that a song that is bad is generally pretty bad as well as being recommended very little it seems that having 2 ways to judge the rare bad song should be plenty. If you were picking songs at random with as much chance for a bad song as a good one, the 1 through ten scale makes sense. But people generally like to recomend good songs so you dont need as much room on the low end.As a musician Im sure you know that this is how eq is generally visualized because we hear on a logarithmic scale to. Just a thought. Take care.

Su-chan, the cute girl who can sing like nobody's business, has been put away. This is a more mature, aggressive-sounding Su-Metal. She's a grown lady with a voice like a Valkyrie. Su attacks the lyrics with gusto and power, which is funny because it's such a silly and lighthearted song.
Momoko (Momo-Metal, Momoko Okazaki) is the one doing the Japanese Kabuki (the Japanese theatre voice), in live versions of the song she also growls.
To me, this song marks a departure from cute girls with metal music Babymetal to something more integrated and powerful. I might be reading too much into it, but I get that feeling.

We can complain all year long and nothing will change the mind of Japanese corporate. Musicians, performers... everyone involved from top to bottom are expendable pawns that get paid an hourly rate and are contracted for a specific reasons and have zero input on any thing. Rock the boat and you are gone. A nail that stands above the rest gets hammered down. Uniformity of purpose is everything. No deviation is allowed. Including koba. Everyone answers to someone.
Hell will freeze over and still you not make a dent in a Japanese mindset.
Western kami band told to wear masks. They wear masks. Complain... gone. Next member won't complain. Simply put a foot out of place and it will be metaphorically cut off. Japanese culture accepts this as normal. Rest of the world not so much. But to change what they are is never going to happen.
I recall the story of the Japanese fellow who brought SuperMario ( i believe) to the world. Anyone else would be a Gajillionaire. But he still slogs away in a cubical working all hours with no over time no say and regular pay. And the same is repeaated all over Japan. If you invent for a company, that is what will happen. No glory no wealth... nothing. Normal Jpanese behavior and is the way of things.

I'm not the biggest fan of his contribution to this song either, but I do think it was an honest effort though. He has been an outspoken Babymetal fan for many years, and sent them some music a few years back, hoping to collaborate. Babymetal turned him down at the time, but then got back to him with a demo of Metali at a later date, asking if he had something that might work. The music that was previously declined had been used elsewhere, so he had to write something new at the last minute. And this is what we got. I do think it would have been nice if they had flown him in for the music video though. That footage of him in the background looks like it was shot on his phone in front of a green sheet in his livingroom, or something.
