  • Learn to Muscle-Up. This is the ultimate Calisthenics skill. It took me three months of training before I did my first one. I was aged 55. This video is my journey.
    Now at the age of 59, I am getting stronger and fitter with age. I am able to perform multiple muscle-ups, and my form is still improving. I wouldn't call them strict muscle-ups, but the kipping of the legs is massively less than in this video. Please join, subscribe and support me in turning the clock backwards.

    Thanks for your well done video. I'm 78 (female) and worked for months to do my first unassisted pull-up. Sometimes, I can do three, so my new goal is five. I've seen several young women at the gym doing pull-ups; love it.

    I'm 63 and will be 64 in a few days. I just started my journey to accomplish the muscle up. I can do about 15 pull ups, 30 ab rollers and push ups. I went and bought an assist band yesterday and tried this morning. Even my trainer said it was hard, but he did one. So, I'm not going to quit, your video is great and has given me the motivation. Thanks, and keep up the great work.

    • @funwithcalisthenics
      @funwithcalisthenics  Před 7 měsíci +20

      Bernard, great to hear you are able to do the prerequisites of 15 pull-ups. And being 64 in a few days times makes it even more special. You sound like you are in great shape. Buying the resistance bands gets you used to the feeling of flying upwards over bar. If you can crack the technique, ie , the swing, when to pull, etc, you’ve got this.. when you pull, pull as hard as you can and drive the knees upwards the bar at the same time. It will be a kipping muscle up, but they all count. Receiving comments like yours inspire me to want to make another video. The one you watched i made three years ago. I’ve improved a lot since then. Let me know how you get on.. excited for you.

      @@funwithcalisthenics 😅 Oh well... At least you have something cool to talk about and not just the usual corona/Ukraine/government crap that most guys your age keep on rambling about. My father in law does Kung Fu and works out as well. So once he's done with his political statements, the rest of the conversation is actually pretty enjoyable. With my dad, it's hard sometimes. I love him and all, but I'm really not motivated on visiting him often cuz I know it'll end up being a 1-2h monologue again where I already know 80% of the content by heart and the other 20% is just news about China, Russia or America. Even when times were more peaceful, he'd always Google out a random war somewhere that he can "keep on getting informed about". Don't get me wrong though. I agree with most of his opinions and I really don't have a high opinion about humanity and the direction this world is going. But as long as you are blessed to be able to lead a decent life on this planet where so many suffer, use that time for something smarter than to just Google how many people are suffering. You're neither helping yourself nor them by doing that. You who did a muscle up at your age surely inspired more people than all the other dads together with their boring government stories.

    • @funwithcalisthenics
      @funwithcalisthenics  Před 7 měsíci

      Robert that was a great read. Being a dad myself with kids, I think you really nailed it. I’m also guilty of many things your dad does. Although in recent years I have probably become a little more approachable, and entertaining I guess. I didn’t visit my dad too often, and my kids don’t visit me that frequently. I think it’s a little to do with the crazy world we live in. Let’s leave it at that. Anyway, personally, I find having a hobby or interest like this really helps me mentally to deal with many things. People often say that about sports. Go easy on your dad, he probably loves you more than you’ll ever know.

    • @robertbogomolec8763
      @robertbogomolec8763 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@funwithcalisthenics Don't worry, I don't blame him for anything. I'm actually grateful to have a dad like him cuz he opened my eyes and my mind in many ways. I agree with him in many of his opinions, it just gets annoying when he keeps on talking about the same stuff instead of just realizing that I agree with him, that most people will never agree with him, that this world will still be f*cked up no matter how much we discuss it, and that he could do so much more with his time and energy instead of just watching ex-CIA agents talking about America's undercover plans and stuff like that. I'd love to go with him to the streetworkout park or just play a video game in coop mode. But he kinda stopped doing anything else than "keeping himself informed" and that's the biggest dad-move of them all and that's what makes me frustrated. Like you said, having hobbies helps a lot. The world doesn't really offer much positivity by default. So if you forget how to behave like a little kid and create your own childish positivity, you're pretty much stranded. That's why I don't mind still allowing myself to get excited about muscle ups, bike rides, video games, playing the guitar and stuff like that. I know that all-in-all it's just a bunch of stupid and meaningless activities, but at least it has a positive effect on me. My dad is a pretty intelligent person and thus suffers from the biggest demise of such people - he can't stop behaving less intelligent and can't allow himself to have some simpleminded fun. 😅

    Nice job. You look leaner after the 3 months. I'm 53yoa and just started into calisthenics, as a segway into boxing and Muay Thai. I consider myself in shape, I've been a bicycle rider for 15+ years. Body weight training is humbling and exhausting. It's proof you don't need to go to a gym or have $10k in fancy equipment to gain strength and muscle.

    You are a great inspiration! I will be 60 this year and my goal is to achieve a muscle-up. I started 10 months ago with 2 bands totalling 80kg and have gradually progressed to a single medium band of 25kg where i seem to have stagnated. How long did it take you and did you encounter any sticking points or was it smooth and steady progress all the way? Many thanks again for sharing your journey!

    • @funwithcalisthenics
      @funwithcalisthenics  Před 2 lety +8

      Hiya, thanks for commenting. Firstly, the progress you’ve made from 80kg in bands to 25kg is seriously impressive. I don’t think there are many 60 year olds that could claim that! It seemed like an I possible task for me, and although it was progressing and I was single minded it wasn’t easy. What you don’t see in my video, is that during the three months it took me, I also managed to lose about 1/2 stone in weight while working hard on my pull-ups. Immediately after completing this video I picked up a shoulder injury so I couldn’t progress and clean up the form. Know I have a minor elbow ache, hopefully I’ll be getting back to muscle-ups again soon.
      My recommendation is to watch loads of videos on the technique, and visualise performing it.
      Think .. explosive pull downs like you are slamming the hood of your car and pulling your knees up (kipping) at the same time. And come around the bar, in a curve.. whilst working hard on building your pull-up max. How many can you do?

    • @surefire888
      @surefire888 Před 2 lety +3

      @@funwithcalisthenics
      Thanks for the quick response! Yes, i have watched dozens of youtube videos and i know the theory behind a successful muscle-up, just seem to lack the explosive strength needed. I can do 12-14 pull-ups, probably 12 clean and at least 15 straight bar dips. Am now practicing chest-to-bar pull-ups to improve on explosiveness but it's a really slow process and i haven't seen any progress since reaching 25kg band around 2 months ago :(
