New PS5 Feature Will End [Adjust HDR] Confusion, But only on Sony TVs

- Sony has launched a new "Perfect for PS5" campaign to promote its BRAVIA XR televisions, featuring two PS5-exclusive features, namely "Auto HDR Tone Mapping" & "Auto Genre Picture Mode".
"Auto HDR Tone Mapping" refers to automatic HGiG parameter population through identification of the TV model number through EDID.
"Auto Genre Picture Mode" is PS5's version of automatic game mode switching.
Besides the BRAVIA XR TVs (X90J, X95J, A80J, A90J, Z9J), the X80J, X85J and last year's XH90 or X900H are also getting the new features following a software update on both the PS5 console and the TVs.

I love how this guy respectfully rubs the fact that he has 2 ps5's in everybody's face lol
It’s not that hard to get them anymore. You can’t just walk into stores, but there are so many websites and services that tell you when a new pile of stock drops and where that I got one within one day of deciding to pick one up… and it was local pickup.
That's him flexing and by the way he's got 2 xbox series X lol.
Lol I got 2 at launch 😁
I got 2 and also was able to get 8 other people a ps5 🤷♂️ I guess I just have luck with getting the ps5 😅 and Goodluck to everyone that's still trying 👍
I don't get offended by it...Well, me having two myself could have something to do with that😁
“For me it is never too long” I’m dead
I wonder if lack of lube could change his opinion.
Yeah I was laughing so loud on the bus.
That was unexpected :D
That subtle bell sound when he delivers those lines xD
I think we can all agree with his statement at 6:50
"or two ps5's in my case" what a fucking boss flex.
The first time he actually not tells us he isn’t flexing about owning 2ps5’s for testing reasons, you will get people like this😒
🔥🔥🥵
@Turtle Club thats totally fine. Native speakers do worse sometimes😅

Same. My PS5 looks great on my 900H thanks to this guy.

Thanks for these detailed videos! Cant wait for your XH90 VRR analysis video.
I have a PS5 and an A80J TV. Every time technology promises to make things easier (like HDMI) it just gets more and more complicated.
How is HDMI complicated?
@@elpasa9308no overclocking, ruins graphics card features, costs more to implement thus driving the price of the products more, in all those regards it is significantly worse than displayport.
Every time this man turned his PS5 on I thought my PS5 was turning on
My basic rule of thumb is that HDR is a combination of Console+TV settings. To keep a baseline I keep the console at 15 ticks from the Darkest setting and then I configure the TV/game settings around that. For me this works because it gives me a starting point that's uniform. I've never had an instance where games look bad
Try turning HGIG on then set the first 2 hdr settings to when the sun dissapears. The third one also go low untill the sun dissapears. And i mean literally when it dossapears just like the first 2 but in reverse. I found this to be THE perfect hdr setting and i’ve spent alot of time tweaking. And make sure hdcp is OFF. That thing can mess up the signal.
I have a sony 4k monitor . Does these 15 clicks also apply on it?
The problem I have with HGIG is that it only takes into account minimum and maximum capabilities of a set. There's more to what makes HDR look more "correct" from set to set, game to game. A standard brightness pattern similar to the dark sun pattern should still be present in games that have HGIG, and other settings like "paper white" or contrast are usually very helpful to achieving an ideal image, and should also have example images from dark, medium and bright scenes present to set them correctly.
HGIG solves the problem of setting the bounds of the image, but there's still a lot more to getting a good looking HDR image. My favorite game for setting that stuff is Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which has brightness (aka black level), peak white, and paper white. When adjusting all 3 settings together, you can get an absolutely gorgeous image.
well calibrated HDR can be such a game changer.
Vincent, as a xh9005 owner your video makes me very happy. Glad to hear Sony does not leave out the x90h series with this particular updates on HDR mapping.
Can't wait to recieve the upcoming Sony updates, and your videos are never too long! Thank you and Keep up the good work !!
I have 55a8h 2020 model. Does sony H series work with this new update.
X900h purchase is starting to look better and better lately with the vrr update and now this. Great vid as always
I'm not using the VRR because of what Vincent showed.
Had to manually set the HDR settings on mine 🤔 have you been able to use the automatic feature?
2018 was the worst year to buy tv. 900f gets nothing
Does this update goes for the Sony A8h too? Just wondering?
You always do a great job, is really never too long! Thanks for your hard work!
It is never too long. 💪
buying TV and playing consoles has became a science of its own
not really
most people don't give a flying fuck
Pro tip just buy LG OLED or samsung qled and you won't have issues or at least as many issues as with Sony tv.
55 and 65” A80J have two different panels with the new panel having higher nits. Is this going to affect auto HDR results?
He Vincent do you think Sony could use the XR processor combined with the mediatek chip to give us a better HDMI 2.1 implementation ie no colour banding with 120HZ HDR gaming and a decent VRR mode ? Or is it all down to that mediatek SoC.
hello vincent
XH900 doesn't have HDR tone mapping
how they wanna fix this !?
My Sony A90j and my ps5 is going to be very happy 😁 I'm so excited
You my friend is rich! I would have went with A90 but stuck with A80 cause A90 was way too out my budget but I did want it! 😔
@@B1ackAlloy1992 I'm not rich! I ask for gift cards for Christmas and birthdays so I can buy more expensive things 😁 the a80j is a solid set. You're getting 90% of what the a90j is with that tv! The fact you have the cognitive processor alone is huge!
Hi Vincent, is it still 15 clicks up for first two screens, and all the way down for third screen? When setting HDR on PS5 for Sony X900H? (April 2022)
I'm glad they are still supporting xh90 with these updates as it was also advertised as "perfect for ps5". At the minute I feel I settled for it since I was originally intending to buy the LG Oled but these updates as well as vrr has made me feel optimistic that I still made a good choice with the xh90. Looking forward to your vrr analysis Vincent, just remember it's still in beta stage until it's fully rolled out so I'll expect some caveats until then.
The XH90 is still flawed by non.native 4k120 and other things, so the LG OLED would've been the better choice imho.
I felt the same way when I got my xh90. At the time it was $960 for a 65inch. The LG oled at the time was double that 😅. I still want the oled but I’m happy with the xh90. At a certain point you have to stop chasing tech because it’s always changing.
@@belzebub16 you could argue that, but as someone who went from 1080p playing most games at 30fps on a 50", to now being able to play games at 4k60 all the time and then have other games running at 120fps is fucking amazing. I couldn't be more happy with this TV. Especially for $930 for a 65".. That LG was more than double for the 65.. no thanks lol
@@benstephens187 Yeah, I also have a cheaper 65" 4k60 for the livingroom, but on my gaming setup I stick with 55" C1 OLED which I got for a little more than 1000€ which was a great deal.
Liar, it was never advertised as perfect for ps5.
All lies.
It was announced as “ready for ps5”
Hey Vincent any chance you could look at the hdmi 2.1 switcher from Amazon. I’m interested in getting one so I can run both Xbox and PS5 through one 2.1 port but skeptical whether it can actually handle 4k @120hz
Thanks, Vincent for all of your great content.
Gradation prefered from Sony Bravia X90J should be on or off when adjusting PS 5 HDR? 🤔
Vincent, how do you know how the Auto HRD Calibration is implemented in the firmware? Maybe Sony engineers have this coded already. Did you confirm with Sony?
So, the update arrived. And it does not bypass this step. It does set values accordingly to tv which makes the sun slightly visible as instructed. One thing I need to know is, if you decide to adjust manually, how do you set it back to auto? X900h
still waiting on Sony to have VRR and 1440p mode on PS5.........
No 1440p support is straight up EMBARRASSING. 😂😂😂
VRR is the most important feature of HMDI 2.1 for gamers, the PC and the Xbox have it, what's wrong with Sony? Is their OS maybe just not able to handle it?
@@belzebub16 they said vrr is coming late December or early January. That's what Sony says.
@@troy028: That'd be awesome
Will this still work if ps5 is passed though a AV receiver that has 4k 120hz pass through like the new denon units or would the ps5 need to connect directly to Tv
I am far from understanding HDR, why do we have to set those values in the first place? Shouldn't the HDR signal be something like "hey TV, this image was mastered to have a white paper value of X, a minimum of Y and a maximum of A, now good luck and tone map it to whatever you are capable of displaying;"
I imagined the signal was "fixed" and the TV was the one remapping, something like: "That white spot over there is encoded as RGB (1, 1, 1) that in this scene means 600 nits, and that shadow is just 5 nits, and is encoded as RGB (0, 0, 0), it also happens that in this current scene my brightest spot is the sun over there with 4000 nits (producing a bigger than 1 RGB value) and my scaled is gama (something)".
So if the TV has a peek brightness of 1000 nits it has to remap the values to fit what it can display by keeping the white paper still white while having some room for peek brightness - and when to clip or not.
At least that is how I supposed it worked 😂 😂
Why I don't have to change those settings on the Netflix app on my TV? (at least I was never asked to)
What am I missing?
Is there any video out there explain those internals/how it actually works?
Thanks =D
I'm no expert either but just through watching Vincent's videos alone I have picked up things here and there and can think of a few pointers regarding the answers to your queries.
The main thing that comes to my mind is that HDR contents are mastered with a higher maximum luminance value than what HDR displays are capable of in the market today. I think it's 10000 nits? Or maybe some are mastered at 4000. The point is, that maximum value is higher than what displays today are capable of. OLEDs are around 700 or there about, while LCD's can go above 1000, but still not approaching the maximum specified in the masters.
So you still need some tone mappings even if the TVs are technically HDR.
One way of trying to get a good tone mapping is for the game to know the technical limitations of the display and the game itself does the tone mapping. But there needs to be a way for the game to get that information. Which is why you need to set those three values in your console.
HDR is a mess. Not one tv can truly show it in its true form.
I have the Sony Inzone m9 4K Monitor . I can choose between Standard, FPS , Movie , Game 1 &2 .
When i set the auto picture mode to on and start an fps game , the monitor will choose game 1 and not fps mode .
What does Game 1 &2 Mode means here ?
Looking forward to a review of these features when they arrive. 👍
I want to use HGIG to all HDR compatible games, but then there is this frustration if certain games support HGIG or not, I don’t know if it’s possible but it would be great if they could ad this feature where it can automatically decide when to use HGIG instead of manually adjust it.
hey. did any of this change after VRR updates on Sony A80J ???????
Thank you for this Vincent!
I feel like I have set everything correctly on both my tv and console but I suffer from serious color banding on almost every game. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Is my sound bar limiting me getting 120hz? I have a q70 samsung capable of 120hz. My sound bar only supports up to 4k 60hz. Is the yamama soundbar limiting me to 60hz? I have set up the correct settings and use the hdmi 2.1 cables.
Vincent, something no one seems to touch upon is how TV contrast should be set in HDR mode when viewing these calibration screens. Sony X900e. Any advice please? Thanks for the content.
Same question here
Oof, the sound effects of when the text shifts in to explain what the acronym stands for makes speakers sound like they’re about to die.
that was an excellent piece of knowledge to know as I do have a matching Sony TV and had no idea about that even though I worked in the industry for almost 20 years although I left in 2009 long before HDMI 2.1. I'm finding your videos very informative and I love your style and don't mind longform content at all, in fact I appreciate the detail.
However you inadvertently said something absolutely hilarious @ 6:56: "and sometimes you just can be a good hand job" haha Sometimes it just slips out, I do it all the time myself..

Do you think the x85j is a good tv?
You're the goat! Kingy, funny and really informative! Keep going
Not sure how auto picture mode works with the PS5 but on my X90J if it's enabled soon as my PS4 turns on it'll change to game mode but then stays there regardless if I'm playing a game or in CZcams. So the Auto Genre Mode sounds good to me... just need to find a PS5!
Same here with X90J ✌️... only need to find digital version of PS 5 for the right price.
My TV turns white with 17 touches with dynamic mapping (about 1295 nits), and with 13 touches without dynamic mapping (about 735 nits)... But the manufacturer says that the model has 330 nits. But giving it 8 touches (353 nits), it's still a long way from the square turning white. How much should I leave?
Subscribed for the chimes 😂
Any input in LG CX turning off randomly a lot ??
When I upload a PS5 4K screen capture video to CZcams, the entire video appears to have a gray shade. I am not using any editing software. Is there any solution for the issue ?
So, my XH90 just updated. It mentioned the upgrade from Android 9.0 to 10 but no mention of the ALLM and VRR features
I guess that’s one of the benefits of Sony integration. I’m just waiting for VRR to be added now that it’s being rolled out to Sony TVs.
Yeah same
Hopefully until the end of the year.
Waiting for VRR and ALLM of course would be fine as well.
Maybe they will make vrr for bravia TVs only

@@pandapolygon Bravias are far from trash. I greatly prefer Bravia A8F for cinema and sub 4k content. Then I prefer my LG CX for gaming.
"Sometimes you just can't beat a good hand job". This guy knows how to be humorous while maintaining a perfectly straight face...
the only suprising thing here is that they didnt do that earlier. Manufacturing console and tv and not tightly integrate them to provide the best user experience. Well, at least better later then never.
I'm not getting 15 clicks on my QN90B? I have to go all the way up for the logo to disappear, no matter whether if Game HDR is turned on for HGIG or not.. Faulty Tv? I've only had it a week..
So just to make sure I understand this correctly. If I'm happy to adjust settings manually I can get the same experience on another TV that has these features. Or is the tone mapping only something these specific TVs do?
@Radical Thunder thanks for taking the time to reply, appreciated.
Clever Gimmick for Sony really, you can run PS5 perfectly fine on a Decent Samsung panel for eg, long as the TV has the consoles minimum requirements ie Hz, HDMI 2.1etc etc, run just as good imo
I have a TCL Q650G and it's around 500 nits peak brightness, this TV does not have HGIG, this only have Dynamic Tone Mapping, and according your videos DTM is not accurate. The issue is that when I turn DTM off and I calibrate my PS5 HDR it clips at 15 clicks that is = 1000 nits more than twice of the TV peak brightness. ¿What should I do for calibrate the PS5 HDR correctly?

Will the Sony A80K get this feature to?
What about the 950h ? Will it support it
Vincent, as always you are on time with the materials, a great explanation of what their auto calibrating mode really is there. WHEN DOES SONY DOLBY VISION !?
Well, I think the problem is what xbox is currently facing with their console. 1: Dolby Vision adds more input lag, and 2: I think it might disable certain features like 4k 120fps and such, but it could be something else
Thanks Vinnie.
alright so what do i do I got an a90j and ps5
When using the enhanced format(VRR) over the x900h TV, does that setting only just run VRR? Or does it run 4k/HDR/VRR at the same time? Or would I just have to switch back to the 4k input one?
That TV does not have VRR yet...still waiting on firmware update

Turns off local dimming. Tv has caveats to everything.
Doesn't answer my question though if anyone even knows lol
@@TearsofJoy69er yes it does do all that
@HDTVTest Forgive me if this is obvious or common knowledge, but I recently discovered that changing the contrast on my XH90 will change the MaxTML and FFMaxTML values. Increasing the contrast will lower the point at witch HDR luminance clips, down to around ~800 nits MaxTML and ~1500 nits MaxFFTML when the contrast is set to 100.
At 90 contrast (the default, except for when using the default Dolby Vision preset) MaxTML and MaxFFTML are set to ~2,500 nits and ~1,500 nits respectively and further lowering the contrast will increase the MaxTML all the way up to 10,000 nits at a contrast value of 70. Lowering the contrast beyond this point will simply reduce the TV's maximum luminance.
I find this interesting for several reasons. Firstly because I can now (somewhat) more accurately calibrate my TV's Tone Mapping to match the content I'm going to play, but also because I wonder how Sony's Auto HDR Tone Mapping™ is going to compensate for this. Will it adjust the PS5's HDR adjustments in realtime when I adjust the contrast setting on my Bravia? Or will I have to trigger it if I change my TVs brightness value for whatever reason? 🤔
Thanks for sharing your findings!
@@felixisme you’re welcome. I actually should follow this up with some more findings:
Adjusting the gamma also influences the MaxTML and MaxFFTML.
The values I mentioned are with a Gamma setting of -2 (which maps to a gamma value of 2.4). However with the gamma setting set to 0, 90 contrast wil result in a MaxTML and MaxFFTML of 2000 and 1000 nits respectively. That kinda makes sense since a gamma setting of 0 maps to a gamma of 2.2, and is the setting at which the PQ curve on the Sony XH90 is supposed to be most accurate. At that setting the dynamic tone mapper is optimised for content with peak brightness between 1000 and 2000nits, which is the most common target peak brightness for most consumer movies.
Will this HDR tone mapping look as good as Dolby Vision does on games 🙄?
hello, I'm in doubt between two tvs from samsung, the qn900a 65 inch and the qn800a 75 inch. They are at a similar price and I would like to know which one is worth more to have the best gaming experience and Highest image quality. Does the image quality that the qn900a has more than the qn800a make up for the difference of 10 inches less? or is it even better to go for a 75, but with a slightly lower image quality? The qn900a is at €4200 and the qn800a is at €4600. I wish you could help me
Do you need 8k tv right now? There’s a very limited amount of 8k video, and you pay much more compared to 4k tvs.
Your deadpan delivery of jokes makes them hilarious!
I did a double-take with that "..can't beat a good hand job.." line; I had to rewind to make sure that's what I heard. 😆
I'm one of the few that didn't like your recommendations for adjusting the HDR on my A90J. I ended up adjusting my HDR to my own tastes using Ghost of Tsushima. I wonder if this new HDR tone mapping will adjust the settings away from what I like. I hope I can toggle it on off in my tv settings.
What was it that you didn't like about the recommended settings? I'm currently using the defaults and like you aren't too happy about how Ghost looked. Thought going here would help resolve that.
Would this work on mine Sony a1e?
I'm not a fan of HGIG most of the time the image dims significantly i hope I can still choose to turn it off

What about XH8096? Will it get the new PS5 features ?
I've just bought 65" sony xh90 and manual booklet says that it only support 120hz in 1080p and 60hz in 4k even though it was advertised as native 120hz 4k and all reviews says the same so I'm little confused. Could any user of xh90 confirm if it's full 120hz as i paid £1000 for it and if it's not full 120hz then I'll have to send it back.
I have issues with some games where HDR will turn on and off on my LG C9.
In time be interesting to see if it works on lg g1and c1
The freaken jokes that he slips in there 🤣 very smooth too!
finally sony doing right thing, with vrr coming this winter on both ps5 and sony tvs, its a great start, hope way more features will drop only on sony stuff to be nice ecosystem for movie and gaming fans, hope they dont forget their sony xperia smartphones, it could be great thing to implement something like xcloud on sony games
Right in time for my A80J.
My HDR on my LG I feel is too dark. Resident evil 8 dark areas are way too dark. And in Spider-Man miles morales in dark areas its also quite dark and hard to see people with darker skins faces. I tried putting my black level to high and full on tv and ps5 and that seems to fix it , but people say that doing that makes the screen have washed out colours ? Idk what to do
Auto picture mode always switches to game mode when it sees a console on the external input no matter if it's playing a game or a movie on the console. I now have a PS5 with A80J TV and it still won't change from game mode when I play Netflix or CZcams on the PS5, I do have auto picture mode enable for that external input. So I'm hoping this new Auto Genre mode does actually do what it says it does. Go try playing anything else besides a game on the console an you'll see what I mean 😉
Unfortunately I have a very old 4K OLED Bravia A8 from 2020 so it's not already supported. 😐
Awesome, for my A80J and PS5 🙂
Can you review the TV with 2 million dimming zones, the U9DG?
Does anyone knows if Dynamic tone mapping increases input lag ?
It shouldn't. Otherwise, what's the point in Dolby Vision/HGIG gaming??

I want to get the Sony over the c1 very badly but I don't think I will because of the dimming in HUD static element games. Also, im a big sports fan and I also play certain games where there is static elements and based on what Ive heard on other channels the abl can dim upto 50% of the brightness which will just suck out the picture for my tastes. From this is it fair to conclude that the c1 is better for sports and games in general due to this dimming. I know the Sony processing is very tempting but would you choose that for sports over the much more brighter c1 in this scenario? Would like to here other people's input on this especially Vincent on what he would choose for sports.
