Jays fan of 30 years. First of all, fuck Jon Morosi. But more importantly yeah I'm sad but I can't get mad at the fact Shohei took SEVEN HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS and honestly even though he's the goat have to wonder how that contract will hold up. Hope he does pitch again because I'm a mega fan.
How much money does he even need? When he was playing at NPB, his mother gave him a stipend of $900 a month. He didn't even spend all of it. He didn't even have a car because he lived at the dorm and just ate, slept and breathed baseball.
I think he can give a big part of his contract money back to the Dodgers to get a top level free agent. He is the type of guy who would do that in order to win. I think he wants to go down in history as not only the greatest player, but to help his team become a dynasty. The dude is just different.

I'm honestly just hurt on multiple fronts. The fact the Blue Jays didnt get him is one thing, but it's the fact that like you guys said all the stuff that came out Friday happened that puts the true sting on this whole thing. Another thing is the fact that from everything coming out, the Jays were used AGAIN to get the Dodgers to pony up more money for him. It also allows for more of the "SEE WHY WOULD ANYONE GO TO CANADA?" BS that keeps happening every time free agency comes around.

I don’t believe that! Dodgers already prepared that because they know HOW TO MARKET this guy and can make tons of money also off the field. He is a global phenomenon with a rich market in Asia apart from Japan. He also garners international attention from even non baseball countries in Europe!
Fellow Canadian here. Players don't like to play here because they like to keep most of their salary, just like in every sport. I don't think Shohei wanted to pay $20M a year in taxes for an extra 4 hours on a flight to Tokyo.

He is a baseball monk, doesn’t drink, go out an party, don’t buy expensive mansions or cars or jewelry (he doesn’t even like to drive more than neccesary, he rents a house for 30K which is low for a professional, he didn’t even have an iPhone when he won the MVP first time) so taxes he doesn’t really care.
Rogers Com can pay and did match. What he loved was the RC Dome which reminded him of Sapporo dome where he used to play and he probably liked the serenity of the Canadian atmosphere. But he has a time window as a high performing athlete and he came to fulfill his dream and the clock is ticking, he felt Dodgers had the most chance to get him where he wanted to be, World Series champion. Just know, CAA and Ohtani never played with Jays. It’s just not in Ohtani and CAA respects that to honor their relationship.
People only focus to 700 million dollars and forget what Ohtani do in the past 6 years for Baseball 😏

@@Michael-tj5bkhe was never on a flight to toronto, it was confirmed by multiple reporters he was at his home in SoCal. Matter of fact, I would say the plane rumors hurt the Blue Jays chances if anything, not because the it made the dodgers give a higher offer, but the whole overblown publicity was exactly the kind of thing it sounded like Ohtani was trying to avoid. But let’s be real: no team had a chance at Ohtani it was always the dodgers. It was false hope if you thought so.
