If the argument is the one made by Brad Pitt in Moneyball about "rich teams, poor teams, fifty feet of crap, and the A's," you could make that case about nearly every North American major sports league. And it's not like the Dodgers wrangled the contract deferment out of Ohtani, he chose it as he wants to win and have a team around him capable of winning. Let's focus on what "Del Tufo" said about "Advertising". Name ONE Japanese company that WON'T WANT TO ADVERTISE AT DODGER STADIUM.. On Dodger RADIO, Dodger Billboards, Dodger TV broadcast. The Dodgers will be hiring a team of Japanese speaking market sales people and I honestly think, they will make "50 Million dollars a year". Japan is a wealthy country.. Ohtani is their GOLDEN BOY in the countries favorite sport. My goodness.. I lived near Tokyo (in Yokosuka) in 2006'-2008' and they love to advertise. Now those Japanese companies will have the ADDED benefit of Ohtani being paired with the DODGERS... Also at the same time it’s a big win for the dodgers. From a finance 101 perspective, $1 dollar today is always worth more than $1 dollar tomorrow (due to inflation and ‘opportunity cost’). It’s the basic concept of the time value of money.
What this means is that it allows the dodgers to take advantage of the available funds to them now to save up for more expensive players, while also capitalising on the revenue from the Ohtani’s popularity with global fans and advertising BEFORE the next 10 years - ultimately making it the best deal both parties could have while building a winning team.
Events like this will change the history of baseball and it’s probably what’s needed to make it more popular again.

If the Dodgers don't become a serious dynasty with their lineup and Shohei as a pitcher, then the Dodgers don't deserve to exist. This line up is par to the mid-late 90s line up the Yankees had that won 4 series

I became a Pirate fan during the 1960 World Series. Listening to the games in my 6th grade class. It was a treat we earned by having a great day of lessons. Also, these were obviously day games. When Maz hit THE home run it sealed the deal for me. Pirates are my team. What broke the bond was the repeated giving up of hope and then players on a regular schedule that is tied to the clubs payroll. I don't have to list the gory mess taking place over the years. The same lame excuses blah, blah, freaking blah. Gerrit Cole and Andrew McCutchen were the last straw. I stopped watching or caring about baseball. I missed it though. So I said to myself, "self, find a new team." So, I did. One that had a history of great players who actually are paid to win. The past few years saw the influx of great players to the team not getting great and leaving. A Mookie (he got paid). A Freddie (he got paid). Now a Shohei, and boy did he ever get paid. They have a management and ownership that actually seems to want the best for the community, their fans and the players. I will always think that Roberto Clemente is the greatest right fielder to play the game. I miss the Buccos but I am now happy to be back. I am excited about the upcoming season. YES!!!

the collective baseball world is salty cus their team didn't land ohtani - no buts or ifs about it. the contract is a bargain - Ohtani's lure pays for itself... AND MAJORITY of his contract is deferred - that means anywhere between 400-600 million is deferred. Dodgers are making bank for the next 10 years and EVERY OTHER BASEBALL TEAM's fan is salty they couldnt land him - don't blame the Dodgers for having a competent organization - tell yours to do better. Don't blame Ohtani for getting the bag and a comepetitve team - he's been a dodger fan for all his life and he made his dreams come true.

It’s a reference to Bobby Bonilla’s deal with the Mets when they cut him. Rather than pay him the ~$6 million they owed him, they agreed to pay him > $1 million/year until 2035, even though he retired in 2001. It’s a spectacularly bad deal for the Mets and a running joke in baseball.
