  • In 2017, Jon Wertheim traveled to Japan to meet the then-22-year-old baseball phenom who had yet to play in the U.S. This past weekend the dual-role player, who made his MLB debut in 2018, announced he was joining the Dodgers, reportedly signing a record 10-year, $700 million deal.

    Fast forward 7 years, look whete he is at now. I think many people here in the states don't realize how strong he really is "mentally". He's definitely known for his god-given talent and his physical strength but not many madia talks about his mental side. He's been dealing with this type of crazy media attention since he was in high school. He knows how to deal with pressure, expectations, criticism. Thats why he never wilt under brught lights like we saw at WBC final.
    His mental strength really matches his physical and natural talents thus he has became an international superstar player.

      @surfwriter8461 Před 6 měsíci +16

      Historical talent, not generational. He's exceeded what Babe Ruth did in his short time as a two-way player, and of course the game was very different during Ruth's era. Ohtani is an athlete who transcends the sport and boggles the mind, even for those professionals who marvel at what he's able to do.

    • @yomommasan292
      @yomommasan292 Před 6 měsíci +14

      I’m agreeing with the other comments and adding a clarification- Generational would be someone like Kershaw or Trout, who’s just unequivocally the best of their generation of players. Shohei Ohtani at his best is like nothing that MLB *HISTORY* has never even seen before. If he’s close to his 21-23 production then he’s undoubtedly the best player ever.

    If I remember correctly, in an interview by someone talking about Shohei, he had no fascination in living the lavish, celebrity lifestyle - and just focus on baseball, and live off of the allowances of 100,000 yen per month (roughly 800 dollars per month) from his mom, who managed his money when he was playing in Japan around his rookie year, and living in the team dorm, but rarely using the money. That's one thing that I thought of when he was deferring 680 million of his 700 million contract money. He seems like kind of a person that's willing to live like a regular people, but spend time on perfecting the craft, which also connects to so many people and also be lovable at the same time.
    You probably don't see that in a professional athlete in this day and age. True example of greatness and his humble roots.

Check out what he said before this historic 700-milion contract. He initially said to his agent: "What if I defer all my salary so that my team has a better chance to compete?" This comment just shows how hungry he is for the playoff! To him, the top priority is always baseball. Everything else, even money and women, is secondary.

    What gem of a story 60 minutes has here. I bet they were hype to repost that following that insanely large contract lol it’s like Kuriyama created this mythical beast in a lab somewhere.
    Side note, I wish I could go back to the original post and read the comments because I can’t even begin to imagine how many people were scoffing at the idea of him succeeding at both sides of the ball the way he has. “ pitching, and hitting in Japan is great and all but no way he’ll both in the majors” I can’t imagine how many of those comments existed.

    "Japan's Babe Ruth"... that's insulting considering how much better Ohtani is. Babe Ruth only played against white players. Ohtani is absolutely killing it in todays game where the skill level is far higher and talent is far more diverse

    MVPs in the Japanese league, Two MVPs already almost 3, and one WBC MVP, and maybe now with the Dodgers one or two more MVPs maybe a Cy Young, Babe Ruth has competition as a mystical character.

    A level below US baseball??? Haven’t they beaten us in the Olympics multiple times to win the Gold metal?

    • @r7calvin
      @r7calvin Před 5 měsíci

      Isn't the Olympics like the WBC, where the MLB teams discourage their best players from participating?
      I do think the fact that Trevor Bauer can't manage in NPB shows they're far above AAA.
