What a beautiful song.Elton John is brilliant in his singing, Piano playing, and those amazing productions. He just draws you in and touches your heart. "Empty Garden" is a favorite of so many Elton John fans.I don't think he ever made a bad song.
Beautifully sung by Elton, as we know he knew John personally. I remember the day John was killed. I was 14 years old. It impacted me so much in my life. Good song.
Elton performed in Central Park in 1980, 3 months before John Lennon was killed 16 blocks from where the concert happened. Elton and Bernie would write this song not long after in 1982
And when I hear this song it also makes me think of others like Lennon who wanted a better world only murdered by evil. I think of Lincoln, Kennedy, MLK, Che Guivera and on and on and on. Evil seems to always be there to stomp out good. The timing of Lennon's death was in between Reagan and Bush being elected about to take office. After that we had corporate music controlled by the corporations. For example the Dixie Chicks who questioned the reason for war - immediately after their question the hammer came down upon them and no other musician since has questioned the military industrial complex. The police who arrested Chapman said he acted like the Manchurian Candidate.
Freddie wrote a tribute song for John Lennon, too. Life is Real on the Hot Space album. He name checks John in one of the last lines. Really interesting lyrics.
There are a lot of "Unheard" of by the masses Elton John songs that are better than his hits. Like "A Bullet in the gun of Robert Ford", "Indian Sunset", "Amoreena", "My Fathers Gun", "Ticking", and my two favorites, "Rotten Peaches" & "I've seen that Movie too".............Empty Garden is one of those that gets lost in the weeds also.
I've been a fan for over four decades now, and I couldn't agree more. So many hidden gems on some fairly obscure albums. Everyone knows the hits, but he's so much more than that.
Hi Starry, I had never heard this before, what a beautiful song. George Harrison did "All those years ago" for John but I think this is better. Thanks,
She did not break up the band. It was time for them to all move on. At least john maybe more than the rest, was ready at that time. That was rumour that went around for years, probably started by Paul McCartney lol
My favorite Elton John song. ❤
I saw him do this song at Madison Square Garden. He played it to a video of John Lennon who was my favorite Beatle. I was in tears.😢
I've always loved this song. Not many people seem to know it. Thank you!
Such an amazing tribute to a friend and genius..
40 years ago today RIP John Lennon 🙏
"It's funny how one insect can damage so much grain" these words say so much.
Always touches me deeply, this one. 😢 RIP, John Lennon

David Gilmour’s “Murder” is a different take on Lennon’s death, more angry than sad. The studio version is great.
The Cranberries 'I Just shot John Lennon' has a bit of that same anger.

I Totally agree mr. Rondonmon.

Do you know 'Here Today' by McCartney? Might be the best tribute to Lennon.
Hi Starry,
I had never heard this before, what a beautiful song.
George Harrison did "All those years ago" for John but I think this is better.
Thanks,
Yeah I know that one but this song is way better. The lyrics are way deeper.
