This was a Double Album, as many don’t realise, or may forget due to CDs.
Some other great albums too, like Madman Across the Water and Tumbleweed Connection before this that made him, were exceptional.

I had the privilege of seeing Sir Elton live in concert several years ago his Live Shows were to die for . He did 4 Hours NON STOP using only HIS MUSIC and then did and encore of 30 minutes . What a Talent
I've seen him twice and yeah 3 hours each time.
I saw him in 2015, and I think I amazed everyone around me, because I knew the words to every song he sang! He was spectacular, and so was his band!
Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics, it's about giving up an excessive rich life and going back to the farm. It has some tones of a break up too along the back to my farm roots, "you can't plant me in your penthouse, I'm going back to my plow." Bernie was from the country so you will always see this sort of theme, especially in one of Elton's best songs in my view, Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters, about coming to New York City and it wasn't the great place he thought it would be.

"Honky Cat" is VERY about him coming from the farm.
I think every bit of the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is about disillusion with the life he always dreamed of. Of course, richness is part of it. But it's more like fame, success and (yes) fortune don't make you feel like "this is it". They come with a lot of confusion and insecurity. How can you plant your roots in something you don't know how long will last? You basically come from the safety and love you had at home and go to the unknown, with unknown people and their unknown intentions.

Elton John's music I always felt like it reflections of his life, and how he feels about insecurities. He had a turbulent childhood. He dealt with drug addiction, tried to commit suicide. Had a relationship with his co-writer Bernie Taupin.
I'm a 67 year old grandfather and it's refreshing to see young people not only giving the music that i grew up a chance but appreciating it

As everyone will surely tell you there is an almost unbelievable catalog from Elton and Bernie Taupin. Just take a random pick and you won't go wrong. Along with any album cut or live version, I highly recommend looking up his appearances on The Muppet Show. The music performances with the muppets are priceless. Have fun diving into Sir Elton John's music.
Try some of Elton's early work to get a feel for him "Tiny Dancer" "Levon" "Rocket Man" "Madman Across the Water" Elton composed the Music ,Bernie Taupin writes the Lyrics. One of the Great Songwriting Teams!
That being said, they should listen to "Harmony" from this album. It's one of those hidden gems, which I discovered as the B-side to "Bennie & The Jets" as a kid. 😎
Nobody in the comments has recommended "Your Song" an early Elton John hit(maybe his first?). That was my intro to him, and when I hear it, still brings back great memories

Elton John writes the music. His lyricist is a poet called Bernie Taupin. Some very poignant songs. This song is about not chasing the dream and living a normal life, you are quite right
It’s a bit more like “Hey, MGM! - Stop telling me what song to write or I’m going back to my roots and you can do the other thing.”
I haven’t seen anyone mention “Daniel”. I remember standing on the blacktop at recess in fifth grade going over the song in my mind while I was trying to memorize the lyrics. Great song.
Someone else mentioned that he sang a few songs on “The Lion King”. He actually wrote several, with lyricist Tim Rice. He sang “Circle of Life” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” but not for the movie soundtrack.
If you’ve ever seen the movie “Almost Famous” you might remember the scene when the characters are on the tour bus and someone starts singing Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” and everyone else joins in. It’s a great moment in a great movie.

I feel old. It's hard coming from a time when Elton John was a household name like Beyonce, Taylor Swift or Lady Gaga to hear a younger person say they know very little about him. The particulars of why this is so, I don't know. Elton was wild, he wore outrageous costumes and glasses, he was very good friends with Freddie Mercury. Angelina does her version of this song. Elton has so many great songs so be sure and do some more.

This was the first double album I bought with my own money and I practically wore it out. Not a concept album but the songs did tell a story from the beginning to end. I still have it and I suspect there are still a few seeds and stems in the fold.
Elton John was the artist of the 70’s. Had hits into the 90’s. “Philadelphia Freedom “, “Benny and the Jets” are two of my favorites. Sir Elton John has collaborated with Dua Lupa in recent years.
Fun fact - Philadelphia Freedom was a song he wrote for the legendary tennis great, Billie Jean King

"Rocket Man" needs to be the 1972 Royal Festival Hall live version. The song for Princess Diana was "Candle in the wind" a song Elton wrote about Marilyn Monroe, with changed lyrics. Bernie Taupin wrote the new words in 2 days.

You can't go wrong with any song by Elton John. I know most of his hits will be recommended multiple times here, but I want to suggest one that probably won't get mentioned as often. 'Someone Saved My Life Tonight' is one of my favorites, if not my very favorite Elton John song. The first time I heard it, something just clicked for me. I think it might have been where I was in my life at the moment. To be completely open, my girlfriend and our relationship at the time probably had a lot to do with why the song touched me like it did. Still, its an amazing song!

first time i heard of elton john, it was middle school 2017 and i was much different from the other guys around me, i lived as if it was still late 20th century and spotify recommended "Elton John Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". i clicked it and listened and i just started listening to music like that and i dont listen to one modern song all the songs i know are before 2000s
Elton John won a scholarship at the age of eleven and went on to study classical piano at the Royal Academy of Music for several years before focusing on rock music.
That whole album is a masterpiece.
He's a young hustler who's being kept by a rich woman. He's gotten sick of being treated like a possession to be passed around to her friends, so he's going home. :)
Using orchestra was not uncommon in the 70's. The Beatles did it too in "A Day in the Life". It gave gravitas to songs, grounding them in a way. Elton rocks pretty hard sometimes, and sometimes he does ballads like this. It was a thing in the 70's to show off how much musical range you had, how many different styles you could write in. A rarely remembered Elton song that would make a great contrast to this is "Texan Love Song". It's pretty far stylistically from this, and a very sharp observational piece about people the band ran into on tour in the South.
As to Elton memories, I was a fan in the 70's and had all his albums. I remember I embroidered a pair of jeans with his initials all along the hem and up the seams. I wish I had those jeans now!

IDK how this song seems to people now, but this and "Your Song" are some of the songs that catapulted him to superstardom. He had hit after hit after hit. He was HUGE on the pop charts, a legend. My expectation is that it's hard for moderns to get into soft rock of the 70s, that it would take time and exposure. That's because it has a lot of melody and moderns are focused on beat.

This was the first album I bought my sister for Christmas along with The Beatles "Let It Be". She bought me Jimi Hendrix "Are You Experienced" and Bowie's "Aladdin Sane". We had different musical taste.

There's such a long list of great Elton John songs. One I'd suggest is "Little Jeanie." (Bernie didn't write the lyric; Gary Osborne wrote it)
I have been to very few concerts in my life, less than 10, but I was very fortunate to see and hear Elton John and Billy Joel together almost 30 years ago at their performance in the Clemson football stadium. I was at the far end from the stage, but who cares? It was still truly awesome.

I still remember Casey Casem talking about Elton John. He holds the record for the longest streak of years with a song in the top 40. He had at least 1 song in the top 40 each year from 1970 to 2000. I remember when he passed Elvis - which was when Casey brought it up. He's a remarkable person who really overcame some terrible things in his life and still pulled off that record.

As a young lad Elton was accepted to London's Royal Academy of Music to study piano.
When a reporter asked Elton how long did it take him him to write the music for a song, Elton replied maybe ten minutes or so.
I had a chance to see Elton "live" at the St. Paul Civic Center where he put on a memorable show! Standing right in front of the stage, Elton walked out on the stage to the music of "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding", also from the Yellow Brick Road album. He wore an extremely long cape and feather glasses, then sat down with his glittering bejeweled grand piano!

It's actually NOT a live recording. The audience sound was added in the studio after the song was recorded. There is a documentary about the making of the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' album and they get into how and where the audience sounds were added.

For some weird reason, Elton happened to have hit the opening piano chord of the song exactly one bar before the song actually started. So I was doing the mix and this chord kept coming on which you normally wouldn't expect to hear. I turned to engineer [David Hentschel] and I said, 'What does that remind you of? … It's the sort of thing that people do on stage just before they're going to start a song.' Just to kind of get everybody, 'Okay, here we go, ready?' For some reason that chord being there made me think, 'Maybe we should fake-live this.'

The Jist of the track is about leaving the comfort of a simple life on the farm for fame and fortune and penthouses and such. Through the song, he is contemplating if he should leave his life of fame and go back to farm, that maybe his dad was right. That maybe the Emerald City isn't the greatest life. Maybe the best of life lies beyond the gold and glitter, within the simple life of the country and small towns. That's in a nutshell anyway, and Sam nailed it at the end. Love your reactions, guys. In addition to all the accurate comments about his talent and wide range of hits he has always been very aware of his fans and recognized his success was due to his fans. When I saw him in concert in the 90s he played for several hours, hit after hit. But what most impressed me was that during the entire concert he would perform a few songs, get up from his piano and walk to the edge of the stage and shake hands with fans and sign autographs. Not something you see from many performers, especially living legends like him.

This album is one of the greatest albums from the 1970s.
When i heard this song as a 10yr old, i loved it....even though i sang the lyrics entirely wrong. It's a bit hauntingly beautiful in a way. His voice was so crisp in the early days...... That's why i prefer his 70s songs. My music tastes shifted when Van Halen released their first 2 debut albums. But i appreciate Elton's soulful style.
