The Song âHe Ainât Heavy Heâs my Brotherâ was another big record for the Hollies
They had several completely different sounding hits before this song, he ain't heavy and the air that I breath when Graham Nash, from Crosby Stills and Nash was in the group. Some where, Bus Stop, Carrie Anne and Stop, stop, stop. These earlier songs sounded more like early Beatles type stuff. Surprisingly, though, the vocals from the early songs sound completly different, very high pitched and like a teenagers, it's the same singer in all the songs.
What about bus stop
Supposedly Elton John plays keys on it.
The trifecta would be "The Air That I Breathe."
@@BillGraper That's the other one they did.
This was a banger of a song (52) years ago back in 1972. I was an 18-year-old senior in high school.
This song came on at my high school senior prom dance, and everybody was getting down. Didn't realize this guy was working for the FBI as an undercover operator at an illegal bootlegging operation at the bar. But the "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" and the DA man congratulated him on a job well done. Now I am a 70-year-old senior citizen listening to the music of my youth. Awesome.
Iâm 62 and I just learned what the song is about, thanks to this reaction video and a commenter who posted the lyrics.
@@terri2494 He was actually shot. The DA has his left arm while the Long Cool Woman in the Black Dress has his right arm helping him get out of the bar. He told her she will be spared.
Bars and barbells you should listen to the comments, because you really donât know what you guys are reviewing
@@2Cambourne "The DA was pumping my left hand" is the correct wording there. In other words the DA was congratulating him on his work while the long cool woman held his other hand.
@@jemogan I stand corrected James. The DA was pumping his right hand. Congratulating him on a job well done. On busting an illegal bootlegging operation. I had to check out the lyrics and you were right. Thanks for your reply.
Itâs a song that NEVER aged. Definitely one of my favorites.
Saturday night I was downtown
Working for the FBI
Sitting in a nest of bad men
Whiskey bottles piling high
Bootlegging boozer on the west side
Full of people who are doing wrong
Just about to call up the D.A. man
When I heard this woman singing a song
A pair of forty fives made me open my eyes
My temperature started to rise
She was a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5'9" beautiful 'n' tall
Just one look I was a bad mess
'Cause that long cool woman had it all
I saw her heading to the table
Well, a tall walking big black cat
Charlie said, I hope that you're able, boy
'Cause I'm telling you she knows where it's at
Well, suddenly we hear the sirens
And everybody started to run
Jumping under doors and tables
Well, I heard somebody shooting a gun
Well, the D.A. was pumping my left hand
She was holding my right
Well, I told her, don't get scared
'Cause you're gonna be spared
I've gotta be forgiven if I wanna spend my living
With a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5'9" beautiful 'n' tall
Well with just one look I was a bad mess
'Cause that long cool woman had it all
Had it all, had it all, had it all
Had it all, had it all, had it all (she had it all)
Well said.
Thank you for saving me the trouble of looking up the lyrics! Iâm 62 and I have never been able to decipher what he was saying, except for a few words or phrases. I just thought he was talking about seeing a beautiful woman in a bar. I had no idea there was gun play or criminal activity in the song.
The lyrics could be a Film Noir script.
@@waynehackney5812Yes! Thatâs how I picture it in my head.
The best thing about the Hollies is that all of their songs sound completely different. Itâs an amazing catalog.
No matter how many times I've heard this song since its release, I never get tired of it.
Once again, one of the most recognizable opening riffs in rock.
Being a teenager in the seventies was great!
What I remember about this group is that Graham Nash (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young) left the Hollies and then they had a series of smash hits including this one. He even commented on the irony in an interview. Per the internet: The singer, who is an FBI agent, is in a speakeasy filled with criminals. He falls for an attractive 5'9" woman in a black dress and helps rescue her when gun shots ring out.
Same here! I always visualize somebody like Robert Mitchum in the 50s film noir Bar scene and the shooting And fights begin as he drags her out.
I still like the early Hollies with Nash. Bus Stop, Carrie Ann, Carousel, Stop Stop Stop.
they had far more hits with Nash than without him.
The Hollies were huge in the 60âs. Recommendations- Bus Stop and Look Through Any Window
One of the greatest 'guitar intros' ever...go down the Hollies rabbit hole and be prepared for a long stay. If you want a 'love song' perhaps you may listen to 'Don't let me down' by them. One of the greatest and certainly unique groups ever,
A word of advice; stop having preconceptions about groups that you have only heard of one song . Variety is the spice of life, and it is GOOD to release songs that don't all sound the same.
Pretty good advice.
Pretty good advice. It would be like listening to THE BEATLES performing âShe Loves Youâ or âAnd I Love Herâ, and being surprised by ABBEY ROAD.
Yeah, they seem like they force themselves to analyze to the point of listening in a rigid way. Would be better to just relax and take in the vibe imo
A lot of these reactors do that and it makes me crazy. I guess theyâre used to the new music where everything the artist makes sounds the same.
They listen to hip hop. Speaking of sounding the same
the Hollies are amazing
When I was 11, my older sister convinced our Mom to take us to our 1st concert at the local high school basketball stadium. It was The Hollies, Herman's Hermits & The Grass Roots. That began my love of live music. Over the next 15 years, I went to approx 150 concerts & music festivals during the greatest era of music in the history of mankind. #blessed
He's an undercover FBI agent in a speakeasy, bootleg bar, back in the '20s during prohibition. She's singing in the club they are about ready to raid. Normally she would be hauled in too but he's going to save her.
REALLY ,Dram on bro.
Has CCR lead vocal vibe.
Ha! I thought it WAS CCR! I didn't associate this with the Hollies compared to other songs of theirs.
Bus Stop -- one of their earliest hits.
A MUST...'He Ainât Heavy, Heâs My Brother' is a total classic & a beautiful song â€ïž
LongCWBDress has always had CCR vibes for me.
Heaps of Hollie's hits to react to đđ
âïž
đŻ
CCR was the first "reaction" I had while watching the video. I'm familiar with the song, but couldn't have told you who sung it.
Many groups back in the day deliberately tried to avoid having a particular "sound" in all of their music to keep what they did fresh and interesting.
This song has a swamp-rock or southern fried rock vibe to it. I can visualize CCR doing it.
Great reaction, It's funny when you hear a song and don't understand a word they are saying, and then when you look at the words while they are singing you can hear every word, it's like magic!
The songs "Bus Stop" and "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother" would be good ones to check out.
Bus stop is a very good song. Definitely recommend that.
The bass-line is incredible in this one. Everything revolves around it. Love this one.
Y'all be safe.
Next try:
He ain't Heavy, He's My Brother
Carrie Anne
On a Carousel
Stop,Stop, Stop
Bus Stop
Just One Look
I forgot about Just one Look, love that song.
I Can't Tell The Bottom From The Top
Sorry, Suzanne
King Midas In Reverse
Look Through Any Window
Jennifer Eccles
Here we go..... Great Great Song. It was popular because it's a Kick ass song.
Sums it up well đ
One of the greatest opening guitar riffs in the history of Rock!!!!!!!
Great reaction, Sam and Phil! The Hollies music started in the 60s and lasted into the 90s. Their music changed throughout and that's why the songs were so different. Early songs are Bus Stop and Carrie Ann. You'll also like He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother.
loved the song for years before actually reading the lyrics and finding out what the heck he is saying. Its a good story you just have to read for yourself đ
Look Through Any Window, Bus Stop, Carrie Ann, On A Carousel. More Hollies songs.
Back in the day this was a big hit. On the radio.
Fantastic song. And actually quite an unusual one for them. Also one of their biggest hits, great riff here. I really like this style. Funny actually to see how many times on CZcams someone posted this as a song by CCR.
Hollies are one of my favourite groups from the sixties.
I've listened to this song forever. Never could understand one word. Whoever posted the lyrics Thank you.đ Rocking song.âïžâïžđ»đ»
Its easy to get to the lyrics on internet....
I love this song. Way different than their others. Check out early Hollies, like Carousel, and Carrie Ann.
had a 65 mustang convertable when this song came out. had a custom 300 doller stereo in it which was a lot of money back in 72. would ride up in the smokies listening to the hollies greatest hits and ccr.5 dollars would fill your car up. 2.00 would buy a six pack. what memories this song brings back
"Carrie Anne" : "Bus Stop" ; " Dear Eloise" ; "He Ain't Heavy He's my Brother" are all great Hollies' titles worth hearing.
Since you're in the same time frame, you should check out "Cherokee Nation" by Paul Revere and the Raiders.
âBus Stopâ by the Hollies
You can't help but groove on that sound...
The Hollies' He Ain't Heavy, He's my Brother will floor you.
This has been in Movies: Air America, Remember the Titans, Amores Perros, The Longest Yard, The Lovely Bones, Trouble with the Curve, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, and Kong: Skull Island.
One of the few songs they do with no 3 part harmonies. Great tune. Check out the 1st song I heard by them which was their 14th single I think, big favorite of mine... 'Bus Stop' (1966). Cheers.
Kids! Let it flow, don't be uptight about expectations, we did it all bk in the day.
When you use talent and inspiration rather than a formula and machines to create music.
When I first heard this, I fell in love with it. And rushed home to figure out the guitar...
There is such a thing as just enjoying the song instead of always trying to figure out what the meaning is.
Listen to this song all the time đ CCR vibe for sure. A banger as Phil would say đ Peace out âïž âźïž
Where you might have heard the riff: If you've seen the movie "Remember the Titans", you've heard a part of this song. It's playing when the movie chronicles the team's winning streak. By the way: the next Hollies song must "He Ain't Heavy, He's my Brother". It's a MUST listen.
One of my favorite Hollies songs âŠso good.
The air that I breathe and Bus stop are great alsoâŠ
Mucho nostalgia.âïž
He ain't heavy he's my brother. It's definitely worth listening, too.
An old classic here , played on many jukeboxes , and at a lot of parties !
Makes you want to drive fast and take chances!! Best of the Hollies.
Look Through Any Window gave me a huge earworm. Love the Hollies.
The Hollies like all the other artist and groups from the mid 60's to before MTV went through evolution in their sound, they didnât want the next album to sound like the last album.
Its like the line in Ricky Nelson's Garden Party song, "If memories were all I sang, I'd rather drive a truck."
Hollies revamped and re-invented themselves several times as the 60's music changed and merged into the 70's, very flexible band and unique sound. from Bust Stop, Carousel, I Can't let Go, Carrie Anne, Look Through Any Window, Stop Stop Stop, and of course: The Air that I Breathe
This has been one of my favorite rock songs of all time since I was a little kid and it was on the radio all the time. Later I really got into The Hollies and you could tell that this was a bit later after some of their earlier hits and it was different, but it became a huge hit and I absolutely love this song, and in fact it is exactly what got me into exploring older Hollies.
Growing up, a lot of people actually thought that Creedence Clearwater Revival did this, lol. It's an absolutely fantastic dance song, and I know that I personally never really tried to figure out the story of it until I was much older. I loved just the phrases and images and a little hints of meaning cascading down but the music and the feel of it was overwhelmingly the main experience of it. And I absolutely love his voice and delivery on this. It's just perfect for this. It sounded so hip at the time.
This song went to #2 on the charts in 1972. Lead singer Allan Clarke left the band for a solo career after this was recorded. He returned because his solo wasn't taking off and this song did.
Graham Nash was a member of the Holly's prior to forming Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
I was 12 years old when this song came out, and everyone at that time thought it was Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Oh man, I didn't realize that for, what, 40 years, but you are SO RIGHT. Also, I never knew all the words till now. đ
Having the lyrics available is always helpful.
Love this group. The Hollies are a British pop rock group formed in 1962 & known for their great harmonies. They had so many hit songs such as "Bus Stop", "Stop Stop Stop", "He Ainât Heavy, Heâs My Brother", "On A Carousel", "Carrie Anne", "Here I Go Again", "Look Through Any Window", "King Midas In Reverse", "Jennifer Eccles" etc. "Graham Nash" was originally in this group & left in 1968 to form "Crosby, Stills & Nash".
Those are all great. My favorite is "Pay You Back With Interest." I love that the hook has the slow whole notes, but the rest of the song is pretty up-tempo. "Look Through Any Window" is my second, "Bus Stop" is third. This song, though, is an outlier because it sounds completely different from their main body of work.
This was such a jukebox hit when it came out.
Loved drumming to this
Y'all ought to check out "He ain't heavy". A song to live by.
Hugely popular in 60s 70s lots of AM radio play .. they have many hits like Bus Stop, On a Carousel, Carrie Anne
This song never gets old. I was 6 years old in 72â when I heard it on the radio, and my first attempt at air guitar.
Great song. Fun song to dancevto, back in the day.
Hands down, one of the coolest songs ever. On a side note, I was named after the Hollies song, Carrie Ann. â€

Hey Phil and Sam,
This song oftentimes gets people confusing it for Creedence Clearwater Revival song
(It's pretty easy to see why, though)
I heard this song blasting from a pickup truck from a fair distance a few months ago and I knew I knew the song. I couldn't really hear the lyrics from that distance, but the music I knew. So I searched my memory for the title. Looked it up on my iPhone and listened to it. It was so nice. :-) o
The Hollies were a very versatile group, they could do anything. Try âHe ainât Heavy Heâs my Brother â it will bring tears to your eyes.đ
Best intro ever! â€
This song has a small favorite fond spot in my heart. Coming back and ending my 3 year voluntary service in the ARMY in Germany for the last time back in 1976 and sitting in the Airplane on the runway. I put the ear sets they provided and set the channel to Rock and roll. This was the first song up and jammed to it as the plane accelerated down the runway bringing me home to the bay area in California.
"Bus Stop" is still my favorite Hollies tune. Like all great groups, the Hollies had many moods.
Hah hah, this was like hearing the national anthem when I was in school back in the 70's!!đ Many years later, I actually learned to play it. That guitar intro is tricky to get it to sound just right. I finally managed to do it on a 335 Gibson clone with just the bridge pickup, lots of reverb, and some aggressive picking!đ LOVE this song!đđđđ
He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother is a must listen đŻ
This was arguably their biggest hit and most played radio song. Great guitar riff and excellent use of reverb, which can be too much if not done well. I don't hear anything country tinges myself and really nothing bluesy either just pop/rock at its best.
Their most heartfelt tune, with a strong social commentary/philosophy, is He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother. Great haunting harmonica. It's slower overall with strong, chill-inducing vocals and harmonies. This song always gets me emotional even almost 55 years after its release. This is a rare time I suggest the music video with He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother. Lead singer Allan Clarke can really emote; he has a great natural 'fro too for a white British guy.
Crank it up in the car!! We always used to.đ Such a great song!! Man, this was So much fun! đâ€
I think it is important to remember that many rock groups of the late 60s through much of the 70s, had really been into blues or honkytonk, as younger people, and they often emulated that in their own works later. The Hollies, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and tons of others, large and small, sprinkled the stuff they grew up loving as homage, or as tribute, as many of them appreciated the old blues guys. Prog rock in many ways is a growth of rock and jazz. Just a thought. Great channel, and great reaction.
Love this song but I've never been able to sing along to it. đ
One of my favorite songs to blast on my motorcycle running down the highway đ€
Definitely need to react to the Hollies "He Ainât Heavy Heâs my Brother" soon - Please and Thank You.
A great song! I bought the single when it first came out and I had just gotten my first stereo over 50 years ago! I think I still have that 45 RPM.
Hearing this in junior high, my first thought was that the guitar reminded me of CCR, but that obviously wasn't John Fogerty singing. This is the same group that gave us "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother"? But no complaints đ
Fun reactâŠpart of the joy of the song was trying to decipher the lyrics for many years.đ« . âŠThe Hollies book is very diverse. Pop to rock to Ballad; all with a unique Hollies sound. He Ainât Heavy is a great one.
First Hollies song I heard was "Bus Stop" and I fell in love with that song. They were looking for that film noir crime drama type of feel in this song. I think they got it. Check out "Bus Stop"!
This is as good as it gets!!
The really cool thing about this song is the way its put together. I'm a guitar player, and I spent a long time trying to play this song. I got really close, but it just didn't ever sound right. Such a simple riff I thought. I eventually figured out, from seeing the video the first time, that there's actually 3 guitars playing this riff together, but all in perfect synchronization... but in different ways... mind blown lol... Great reaction. Thank you. đ
I remember playing the vinyl record with this song on when I was a small kid. Love it.
These guys were really great. Especially when you consider what era they were in at the time. So I really appreciate you guys doing this reaction because they were at the top of their game. Yup, this was a great hit and I'm glad you found these guys because I have fond memories of 19 years when these guys were big.
The album is called Romany and is definitely one of Hollies best. The Hollies where part of British Invasion with Stones and The Beatles!
"He Ain't Heavy" is another emotional easy song from them like "The Air That I Breath". In this song he was an FBI agent in a "nest of bad men" in a rough bar. The long cool woman was the singer.
The Hollies have many fine hits spread out in the U.S. from 1966 to '74. The first hit here was Bus Stop. Hits in the 70's include The Air That I Breathe and He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother. The early years had Graham Nash as lead singer until he left in '69 to be part of Crosby, Stills, and Nash.
Definitely an awesome group with an awesome song! You should do more of them for sure!!đđđđđ
such a cool song. Its just got the IT to the vibe.
He ain't heavy he's my brother. I tried to instill that thought as a theme to live by in my children
The Hollies typically always had 3 part harmonies, but this song was just Allen Clark alone. The lyrics set a scene similar to a film noir crime-drama. The singer, who is an FBI agent, is in a speakeasy filled with criminals. He falls for an attractive 5â9" woman in a black dress and helps rescue her when gun shots ring out per Wikipedia!
You shouldn't expect a group to sing the same type of song time after time! variety is the spice of life!!
Itâs like a tall drinking of water meaning she was Hot!!!
This song rocks!!!
How did you get it posted? My lyric video was 100% blocked.
Love The Hollies and love this song. Love your reactions!
Pay You Back With Interest, I Can't Let Go. Forgotten early Hollies hits.
Of all the songs of my youth this one would get my vote for the largest percentage of indecipherable lyrics. Back in that day, finding the lyrics written out wasn't as simple as requesting the info from Google, so I spent those years getting only pieces of the story. That didn't change the fact that I really liked the record and the fantastic vocal that made the lyrics so hard to understand.
