Don't forget, Bernie Taupin writes the lyrics independently. He sends them to Elton, who puts them to music. And according to Elton, he's never changed them, ever.

Nothing odd about that. When you're a young kid, you're going to like pop music of the time. It's only when you get older that your tastes mature as you do.
Unless you grew up in the 70s and this was music of the time, chances are you wouldnt be listening to him as a kid nowadays.

I was 8. It got me anyway, the way music so often did, there on the radio, while other life things were going on. And because of those things, the song got deep rooted in me. If I have a heart, that's where the song is stored. It was my first taste of EJ's music and BT's lyrics. I was knocked over, in a way I still can't explain. Beauty does that.

From Songfacts: Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to this and most of Elton's other songs. He often seems to write about Elton, but this one appears to be about himself. The lyrics are about giving up a life of opulence for one of simplicity in a rural setting. Elton has enjoyed a very extravagant lifestyle, while Taupin prefers to keep it low key.
Speaking about the song, Taupin said: "It's funny, but there are songs that I recall writing as if it was yesterday. And then there are those I have absolutely no recollection of, whatsoever. In fact, I'd have to say that for the most part, if someone was to say that the entire Yellow Brick Road album was actually written by someone else, I might be inclined to believe them. I remember being there, just not physically creating.
There was a period when I was going through that whole 'got to get back to my roots' thing, which spawned a lot of like-minded songs in the early days, this being one of them. I don't believe I was ever turning my back on success or saying I didn't want it. I just don't believe I was ever that naïve. I think I was just hoping that maybe there was a happy medium way to exist successfully in a more tranquil setting. My only naiveté, I guess, was believing I could do it so early on. I had to travel a long road and visit the school of hard knocks before I could come even close to achieving that goal. So, thank God I can say quite categorically that I am home."

Remember Jamal, that Bernie Taupin is the man who wrote the lyrics to Elton's songs. And yeah, he says he was dreaming of simpler laid back lifestyle, while knowing it was way too early in his career to be able to pull it off. He had to travel the long road and pay his dues before he'd be able to achieve some balance in his life.

The main theme of the song is in the part of the verse “you can’t plant me in your penthouse. I’m going back to my plough.” He isn’t going to let anyone tell him how to live and won’t allow fame and fortune to define who he is. His future lies beyond the yellow brick road. Back to his roots. He may have drifted away from them after getting a taste of the high life but he knows he needs to go back in order to feel fulfilled and happy again.
