      I'm also 70 years old - I recall when this song was released in 1978 and thought it was great. As an American, there certainly is something about British rock bands. Something grand.

    • @CaptainCaveman1170
      @CaptainCaveman1170 Před 3 měsíci

      I have pondered this for decades. I attribute that undeniable truth to the British people having "a lot" of German DNA...but not too much! They have the innate ability to understand mechanical/musical perfection...while retaining the creativity of all the other peoples who conquered the island beforehand and since. Maybe that's pure hogwash, but it's how I personally reconcile the fact that statistically speaking, "too much" good "stuff" has come out of that relatively tiny and resource barren island. I mean, love it or hate it, the United States is probably the greatest "thing" man has ever invented, and that was essentially birthed by a bunch of British "Mental Rockstars" of that day. Oh, and Knofler is a German name, so that further supports my loony theory lol.

    • @CaptainCaveman1170
      @CaptainCaveman1170 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Not sure why CZcams ate my comment, but it's simple really...the British are German to a large degree, but not enough to stifle their ancient creativity. So they are like the perfect hybrid of precision and creativity and it manifested in music...particularly rock music. Knopfler is a German name, too, so it all makes sense.

    I absolutely loved your reaction -- and, yes, this undoubtedly is a masterpiece (just like Pink Floyd's live version of 'Comfortably Numb', in my opinion). 🙂
    Just had to think of my late father, who loved classical music all his life, but also blues, soul and the American crooners. I once watched a TV show with him in the early 1980s where Dire Straits performed "Sultans of Swing" -- not this extended version, but still great. It was his first time seeing/hearing them. His jaw dropped and when the last note was played, they had a new fan. Just a quick anecdote to share with you and everyone else.

    I feel the absolute genius of this live extended version is EVERY riff and excursion on MK's guitar is based entirely on the chord structure, progression and melody of the song. He never departs to go off-piste in showing his finger picking range: he blows it out of the water constraining himself such that every solo phrase is a complex yet melodic echo of the song. It's why it has zero dissonance. Additionally, his off the cuff lyrical riffs make this a unique moment in their canon.
    Better late than never to this GOAT version enhanced by their first gig with a new drummer, Terry Williams, who added a new dimension to this live performance (helped his parents were in the crowd")
    I've been lucky to have been a follower of DS and MK since Dire Straits' first hit (this one as I was 18 and at sea for the first time when i got a letter screaming at me to find this single and buy it) to his current solo career... unparalleled breadth and guitar and lyrical virtuosity ...

    I have to say it was one of life's great music experiences to be in the crowd watching Dire Straits play this and all their other hits live. This song was my introduction to them when it was released when I was just a tacker at school

    Interesting that about at 13:08 Mark is looking around at the other bandmates to see if they are having as much fun as he is. As you mentioned, the chemistry within this group is palpable, and adds to the fun and exuberance of this performance. So grateful to have been a teenager during this timeframe.

      I think he was recognising Terry's genius in lifting the tempo to that speed..but yes,these guys were rocking out and unbelievably this live version is not even rated with rolling Stone.

      Mark is also cueing the others. The transitions between segments (melody - solo, fast - slow, fortissimo - dulce, slow - fast) have quite obviously been rehearsed, and I'm not saying that's bad, I'm saying they could pull this off so beautifully live because they had explored and practiced every idea so much that a nod and a grin was all it took to signal the next part.

    This performance was from their Alchemy Live DVD, recorded in 1983. Sultans was their first big hit, too, from 1978, I think. The whole Alchemy live performance is outstanding, by the way. I'd highly recommend Telegraph Road.

    So glad I saw them live in the 80's. It was a magnificent concert. Loved the show. Best lead guitarist ever, so lyrical. Just beautiful playing by a left-hand player playing a right-hand guitar and using his fingers not a guitar pick. Nothing short of fantastic, superb, sublime. One of the world's greatest ever musicians & bands DIRE STRAITS just showed us how it is done. Virtuoso lead guitarist Mark with equally brilliant musicians so talented xoxo

    My first time hearing "Sultans of Swing" was in September '78. 'Was traveling to meet up with my next ship which required me to stop at a US Navy HQ at Hyde Park in London (CINCUSNAVEUR for those that know what it means). After getting the information I needed to locate my ship, some other sailors and I decided to walk around London for awhile to take in some of the sights. "Sultans of Swing" was getting a lot of airplay, we heard it about everywhere we walked. Watching the people, especially the young guys in groups out looking for some fun made me think of the lyrics. One of the other sailors I was traveling with said about the same thing at the same time; whoever wrote these lyrics just caught that moment in time in London precisely.

    An absolutely masterful performance of the light and shade of true rock music. You could see the audience drawn into this performance, and I’m sure there were tears of delight in the eyes of those lucky enough to be in that crowd.
    We may never again see such a magnificent stage performance from a rock band!
    Yes, we may never see anything like this again in our lifetime!
