The last things IndyCar need are FOX, charters, and locked in guaranteed spots in the Indy 500.
Totally agree on guaranteed spots, mixed on charters, but think they need a major broadcast presence and if Fox is there to dance, let the band play.
@@user-gy6jc8ot1x I don't understand why so many people hate on NBC. I will say I dislike the races that are only on USA, and especially the Peacock exclusive race, but honestly I think the coverage is really good. Diffey is as good as it gets in my opinion.
@@scotturbanski740NBC’s coverage is fine, when you dont take into account the f1 blows it out off the water.
@@rexthewolf3149 any series that doesn't have ad breaks during the race is 1000% better than Indy's broadcasts

Being an Indycar fan is like standing in your backyard watching a black shelf cloud moving straight at you.
Enjoy your day.
Why
More so it’s like you’re standing in your backyard while watching a tornado that’s not moving (it’s moving…)
Always something concerning on the horizon, Honda may leave, this charter talk possibly locking in positions for the 500…
Just can’t look away
It is so funny to hear words "parts shortage" when describing "the most important race in motorsport".
I remember when the 500 was Live on the radio and shown on tv hours later.
It still is in central Indiana
Along with 50+ cars trying to make the field (on two weekends of qualifying), one of the things I miss is the days when A.J, Foyt would enter a car at the last minute for a driver who didn't have a ride going into the month.
My goal for May is to see David and thank him for the coverage!
He makes money doing this. This is his profession. No need to thank him. He’s not doing this as some favor to u. He’s doing it for a paycheck and because he loves the sport.
@@heetseeker8017 trust me, I doubt that he’s getting rich off of this. He needs thanked.
Good luck. He’s a busy man rushing here and there. Check the media center. I found him there at Sebring.
I will be making my first trip to the 500 this year.
The 500 has changed so much since I first attended in 1984. I keep coming and still enjoy it.
I've watched live since 89 in Australia and it's my bucket list to see one in person some day! 2018 left me a very happy Indy lover for now though. Go Willy.P let's go Wills!
@@paulanthonynelson2733 It really is something amazing being there. I went in 2019 just remember not to do the parking. Much easier to park in someone's front lawn in the town of Speedway not in the Speedway parking grounds it'll take you forever to get out. Much easier just parking in someone's front lawn for a small fee and get the extra walking in you will appreciate it later. Go for the whole weekend to checkout the museum and meet the drivers.
To hell with charters. If you can't make the show do better next time. Last year's win, is a gifted win as far as I'm concerned. I go back to 82 when they said you couldn't advance your position using pit access Lanes. Oddly team Penske was involved in that one too. IndyCar still using a chassis from 12 years ago. I love the safety but where's the innovation?
That’s the problem, having enough cars to HAVE a show.
That was 81
The part shortage is a ridiculous problem for a series to have! Still, the racing product is amazing and I hope it gets all the eyes it deserves
True, but if the mfrs of those parts have neither the labor or necessary raw parts, then there's none available. Offer solutions, don't just complain about problems.
I love the 500 too, been a fan since the 60s!
@@roberthevern6169 They all are running a 2012 Dallara chassis. Those parts are available. The only "part" that may not be available is an engine from Honda or Chevy. I won't say that is the biggest problem Indycar has, but it is one of them.
@@roberthevern6169 All teams run a 2012 Dallara chassis. Those parts are available. The only "parts" that are in short supply are engines from Honda or Chevy. They both refuse to lease more than 17 engines for the race. That is the problem.
Going to my first 500 this year! Flying from Arizona, can’t wait!
Get to Carb Day by 9AM. Get a seat high in turn 1. You won't be disappointed.
If Honda leaves IndyCar, that would basically force the series into a open-engined BOP formula OR spec-engine formula… Interesting what could potentially happen because manufacturer interest might increase if things suddenly open up technically.
I say I would to see Toyota, ford, and Alfa Romeo join in the near future!
Ur passion for this dire series is amazing. You really do a great job.
As for finishing under green at all costs... I hate seeing an exciting race end under caution as much as anybody, but sometimes that happens. As I've said many times, Richard Petty's 200th win and Dale Earnhardt's Daytona 500 win came under yellow. And no, the fans didn't snowstorm the track with beer cans and seat cushions, because they weren't conditioned by twenty years of stretching a race an extra twenty or thirty miles to get a green flag finish.
If they absolutely HAVE to finish the Indy 500 under green, I say once they reach lap 190, don't count the caution laps. That still has a "gimmick" feel to it, and it's extending the race past 200 laps, but I think it would be better than the multiple red flags.
2013's race ended under yellow and TK's win is beloved until this day
Everybody shut up. It's may and David Land is talking about Indy. Don't interrupt
Why the hell are team owners arguing for charters? They already have de facto guaranteed spots in the Indy 500 because Chevy & Honda won't lease more than 17 engines each. That is the only "part shortage" in the series. I think the team owners are going to kill this whole sport.
Larson deserves the most coverage and rightfully so. Be happy IC fans that more eyeballs will be watching!
Many eyeballs already were on the 500 since 1911, clown
Easily the best, Indy May coverage in any avenue or fashion! Won’t see you this year but always appreciate your love for Indycar. Happy May!
I would love a review about "The Loinheart" documentary done by you.
Kinda wish that an Indycar driver would do the double, not just NASCAR drivers.
That would be cool. Both drivers could maybe work together
Indycar should and will stay together and will continue to go forward together as I do.
Indycar always !
I hate to see the 500 becoming a NASCAR-like green, white, checker. I guess it's possible for someone to win the Indianapolis 505. Smh.
Indycar does not do green white checked rule. Nascar does overtime Indycar does not add additional laps like Nascar
@@clutchpowers3854 Did you watch the video?
I agree. I also dislike how any more the 500 has become like a Nascar plate race at Talladega where you want to be second on the last lap.
They need to slow the cars down, make them harder to drive in the turns, increase dirty air, give push to pass, and make strategy more of a play. In my opinion anyways.
Jacques Villeneuve already won the Indy 505.
@@wsshores3302 That was just because he fought back from being two laps down, rather than the race being extended by two laps at the end just because race control want a finish under green l
I’d be cool with the charter system for every race but the Indy 500 bump day is what makes it so exciting
Thanks for reporting Larson is a open wheel driver from the short track .Other reporter's well not say that. Great job as always.
Why wasn’t anyone considering JN a “sitting duck” in the second to last caution at the Indy 500…ME jumped the start per usual and passed JN near the time of the caution. Then we all know what happened.
I still think if that caution never happened, Santino just might have won.
Thank you David.....have a great month of May .
The only way it should work is Charter Entries should be for every race *except* the Indy 500, so bump day must stay
I think the Daytona 500 should be like this too
@@jacobevenson8702 Unchartered teams can still get bumped if there are enough cars. They could do that for Indy with 25 charters or something. Part of it is that these teams invest a lot to race all season and they want insurance that this investment has a return. I can't say I blame the teams since they're assuming all the risk financially.
There is only 1 car that will be bumped this year. Give it a couple of years and there will be no one bumped.
Do the Charters all you want. Helps the teams!
The 500 traditions must remain intact. "This is the way"
Great summary David. Looking forward to your reports throughout the month. So glad I am a DL 500 member to support your great journalism.
It's May! Watching this from Santos, Brazil. Go, Hélio!!
Thank you David for all you and your team do. As much as it might shackle you, I hope some day Indycar recognizes you tonthe point that they want you on their broadcast. You would certainly bring a flair we havent seen in a while to the reporting team. However, you are absolutely fine where you are if they never do. ✌️
I was just thinking the same thing! David’s coverage is top tier!! Indycar needs to give this man a job!!
There are Two Major Holidays that I remember to celebrate and those are Christmas 🎄 Day and David Land’s Coverage of The Indianapolis 500. So here We go!!!!! 🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁
Too bad Teddy Porkchops doesn't get the 500 ride... however Callum iLott is a good pick too
Ilott was supposed to have the 6 before Malukas if Juncos didn’t deliberately release him from his contract too late. He’s the perfect pick for the 500
I appreciate your dedication to the sport 😊
I find it hilarious that the same people who hated the 25/8 rule are now the same people begging for guaranteed spots….
Who are you referring to? The fans? (Genuinely asking bc I'm out of the loop on the 25/8 rule, I assume team owners would've been for that as much as they are for charters)
Absolutely 💯
@@eth3792 No, the CART owners were definitely NOT for the 25/8 rule because they weren’t in the IRL. And some of the same owners are now beating the drum for guaranteed spots because it would be advantageous to them now…
@@davidschmidt6421 gotcha, thanks. And I mean yeah, people in power tend to advocate for what will benefit them :p

Great stuff as always, thank you
Good stuff, David. Looking forward to your reports through the month. Cheers!
Appreciate your reports David !
We got the 500 then I get to go to detroit a week after.
Nice lighting and background. Almost looked faked or looped, but well lit and you are in focus.
Better bump day action at Little 500 in Anderson, Indiana.
It can’t get worse than what we had in the 90s. The race survived and thrived
Have a great month guys!
I think the 500 should go to 39 starters and institute like a ~103% rule in qualifying
What’s the point of charters when we only get 33-35 entries anymore?
David... I need to know if Caitlin will wave the Checker to start the race?
See you there tomorrow
I got kyle larson in the top 5
Want to boost the series and the Indy500, allow new chassis manufactures instead of everyone running Dallaras. Allow all and any engine manufacturers who want to compete in the series but with per-determined restrictions. Get back to the days of innovations! Even bringing back "tire wars" ...... Doing all this will certainly attract more teams, drivers, better TV coverage and better sponsorship opportunities. Put a couple international races on the schedule. Go back to the old days and ways of the series and away from this "spec" racing. It worked then and will certainly work now.
Ladies and Gentlemen…
WE ARE SO BACK‼️
Will you elaborate on what you mean by “there’s a chance the series will look significantly different when they come back in 2025”
When you say that, what do you mean?
There's probably something he knows, but is not allowed to say yet; perhaps shared with him in confidence. Or something which has not been made official, but appears likely.
I thought he was referring to the charters possibly being in place by this time next year.
Seeing Nascar fans in the comments say the 500 is only famous bcs of Larson just proves how blind they are abt other series 😂
I really like Dale Jr 's comments on the Indy 500 from this CZcams: czcams.com/video/h_6LJ85Ymv0/video.htmlsi=H0e7O4Wzea-65Fpj
Pretty sad bubble they live in.
Nobody said it was only famous because of Larson. They said more people would watch because of Larson. And that is true!
@@GrandpaShark nobody? Literally a reply I got said the 500 needs Larson to be relevant and another one read “Larson is the only reason to watch”. Clowns can exist anywhere
If this charter goes through I’m probably done with this series
If I have to sit through 3 red flags for a green flag finish again this year, it will probably be my last 500. I do not like the direction of the series and this possible charter system is spitting on the graves of the guys who gave their lives trying to make this race.
Somebody is gonna get bumped. That’s the story.
Pagoda!
what about an independent investigation? penskrooke why would we do that. first the software was not changed after the hybrid test then the software was like that for 8 months after the last race of the season. they never touch the cars until the new season.
Guaranteed spot! That's crazy talk!
I'd like IndyCar to have bigger audiences as much as anyone, but the last 5 years have shown steady audience growth and the racing is fantastic. It would be nice to see better promotion and some equipment development would be good to see, but I just can't see the series being as broken as the critics report. NBC does great work on their broadcasts, but they need to step up as well. The Long Beach GP wasn't on network TV, and that's just wrong. The onscreen product is good, though. In fact, I often use it to talk about how the NASCAR coverage on Fox can and should be better.
If Kyle Larson wins the indy 500 NO Coke 600 for him!
I will be fine with that As a kyle larson fan Because this race is better
Be Bloody nice if Scoot Dixon wins this again, go the Kiwi
Ending a race under yellow isn’t a bad thing. If Indycar is so desperate to end a race under green, might as well implement GWCs
charter??? reserved spot would be much cleaner term.
If Honda leaves, maybe Penske could talk Ford and Chrysler to coming back. Throw in Toyota and KIA (lol) and you would have a real series!
BMW Porsche and Ferrari would be excellent for the series
Isn't Ford getting involved in F1 with Red Bull
@@redfox_84yep. And Chrysler is in no position to race.
My early pick for the driver who DNQ’s is Katherine Legge (which I hope doesn’t happen, even though she’s trying to get more races for 2024)
She ironically was the best qualifier of all the RLR drivers including Lundgaard last year. I think we could see another big team DNQ this year
@@LessGo7921 I only say that because she’s driving for Dale Coyne, my other picks for the last row shootout are, Nolan Siegel, Romain Grosjean and Augustin Canapino. Basically Dale Coyne and Juncos battling it out so one of their drivers doesn’t get a DNQ.
The problem with a charter agreement (besides smaller budget teams that can't compete full time like DRR) is where is the cutoff. Do you cut each teams guaranteed entries for the 500 at 3 (meaning CGR won't be able to field their full compliment of drivers that compete in other races) to you limit it to the cars that compete full time in the other races or do you allow the big name teams that field and extra car for the 500 beyond what competes in the rest of the series to have that extra guaranteed spot and if so does the amount of guaranteed spots increase to accommodate of do smaller budget teams have to give up their guaranteed spot. It is too much of a minefield. Either don't have the charter system and leave it all open to whoever wants to compete can try to qualify to have the risk of a big name driver having a bad qualifying and missing out, or limit the charter to 3 cars per team (in CGR's case the best 3 in qualifying stay guaranteed while any additional cars they choose to enter have to run the risk) this will eliminate the chance of big teams entering so many cars that the field is full with guarantees that there is no chance for any Indy only teams or smaller budget ones to even try to qualify as there will be no spot for them anyway.
Did he say good news
NASCARazation coming soon to a racing series near you!
I wish they would get with F1 and just run at Miami and not run the indy gp
Do both. They need all the events they can get.
Why not both

No charters qualifying only - open up the chassis and engine options to encourage more of a formula one type of vibe!
Happy to see the Italians coming on board for 2025!
Here are some great remarks about the Indy 500 from Dale Jr.: czcams.com/video/h_6LJ85Ymv0/video.htmlsi=H0e7O4Wzea-65Fpj
The only possible locked in spots I’d be fine with is the top 10 in points are locked in. If you want to be locked in you better be performing well. A charter system would be a disaster.
What about Marco!
Yuuup! He’s got an excellent shot at drinking the milk!!!
Is it ridiculous to suggest that Indy become a non-points race?
Is anybody else absurdly bored with the St Pete story?
Yes I'm fuckin sick and tired of hearing about it we're in The Month Of May need to be focusing and talking about that
2:10 The Hornets in the background sound waaay better than a indycar!
I expect Kyle Larson can bring an upset for this year's Indy 500.
Third!!😅
Last year's 500 ending was awful. Ericson should have been given the win. If they want to end under the green, have a minimum of 3 green flag laps even if over 500 miles.
Would you stop running down the series? I guess you weren't alive for the first years of the IRL.
Who is going to drive the #6 at the 500?
Probably Ilott if his schedule allows for it. If not, JR Hildebrand should def be the next choice
Ilott
@@LessGo7921maybe a surprise driver like Kyle Busch since Larson took his ride for the Indy 500!
David do u think INDYCAR will break the rule of 33 starters and allow 35, 36 cars to race. Because if so that fucking sucks
Oh no! Not the IRL again!
Oh boy, GWC gimmick has infected IndyCar.
Penske has a way of making me not want to watch Indycare. Shame but its so true.
Guaranteed spots for indy would be shooting themselves in the foot by changing the one evemt that actually makes them money. Very short sighted by teams.
If they lock in positions, I say we stop watching, stop going to races, stop buying merch.
How can you have a "top storylines" without Helio going for 5 every time hes in the race?
Someone will get bumped , but K Legg will crash onto someone else and the bumped car will race anyway. Just like last year . Lol😅😅😅😅
Marcus was robbed last year, penske looking more and more suspicious
I’d be ok with Charters guaranteeing spots for every race EXCEPT the Indy 500.
daves notebook. i do not know which races you have been watching. andretti has been no where on ovals for years. they have been bad at the indy 500. The best last year was kirkwood 15 the rest were 19th or worse. you need to start up front to win the 500 now. Ericsson will be calling his agent to see how can I get off this team they are terrible at the 500.
k
Beware of those Chevys...Be very aware.
No more dumb changes like charters! Just get a new chassis and hybrid engine. Before you lose all the fans
Penske needs to stop being so stubborn and just sell Indycar to Liberty Media already. Especially if it gets manufacturers interested in Indycar. Just as long as they DON'T bump up the price of spectator admission to unaffordable rates
Go Kyle Larson
I will never attend again if they do this. Nobody should be guaranteed a spot. Everyone should have to earn it. No participation trophies.
I sure hope that Jimmy Johnston ain’t racing. He’s horrible
He hasn’t raced in the IndyCar series in two years now.
@@tweek218 ya seems like the races are going much smoother now. Racing now seems more flowing, more green flag racing 👍
