- Hey, I'm Tommy and welcome to the 'Two Wheels Tommy' channel. In this video I decide it is about time I put some fuel in my motorcycle for the first time since the fuel guage was heading towards the red zone! It didn't wuite go without incident but I learned some valuable lessons. I also pose the question about going through amber lights. Are you an amber gambler?!
This series will follow my progress from my CBT all the way to getting my full bike licence. Gaps along the way will be filled with product reviews for items I will use along the way to see what works and what doesn't, and what you really do need, and honestly don't need! You can also expect some beautiful rides out around the beautiful Isle of Wight where I call home, and shopping for my first 125cc motorcyle....

I suggest watching Alien13 he sees IAM very controversal as he has been through it all and done all the courses.
Do a bike safe course. If you get a higher powered machine learn trail braking as seen on utube a lot. Biker of 48 yrs
As always cheerful video. All I can say is if you havent got centre stand to pop onto then just sit on the bike so it is upright and then fuel up. It is a lot cheaper than throwing half on the floor 😂 As always makes the day or night bit brighter with your nice Take on things. Keep them going 👍

i fuelled up yesterday and i parked not even 20cm away from the pump which i gotta say made filling up easy but getting off and on the bike damn near impossible lol. super cheap tho and i cant get enough of the smell. put on my tinted visor yesterday and my days its so much nicer when the sun isnt blinding me.
Haha I like the smell of petrol as well! I've not tried my tinted visor yet, but then I always wear sunglasses anyway so I don't get whacked in the eye by a bee when I have the visor up 🤣
Hi Mate, if you dropped your helmet on the floor, make sure you checked that its not cracked or dented, as if so the inner foam will also be damaged and it then may not protect you in a crash! If it was just a gentle drop, not dented or cracked you are probably ok, but check it. You can lose an arm or a leg, but you want to protect your head!
I always make sure when I put my helmet down it can't fall or get knocked over. Try placing it on the mirror stalk or on the handlebar thats tilted up, or place it on the top of the pump, or if its dry just place it on the floor. You really want to avoid it being dropped or knocked.
When riding in the wet, avoid white road markings, manhole covers, etc they are all slippery!
Try to avoid using the front brake harshly when its wet, as the front will lock up, try to anticipate and use engine braking (go down a gear or two) so you don't have to brake or use the back brake more.
In the wet you can usually spot diesel on the road (very slippery) as it gives a sort of liquid rainbow on the road, its often on garage forecourts and near roundabouts or long corners, where vans / lorries have overfilled and some has slipped out of their tanks. Avoid!

You make a good point, I did check it and no damage apart from a scuff on the camera. I asked in the shop and they said there is no need to remove it so it won't happen again. I will be replacing it in the new year anyway, I only bought this one as a photography prop with no intention of actually using it and I'd like to use it as a prop again 🤣 I appreciate your tips too, thanks 👍

The comments about helmet falling on floor need a new one thats a myth.
The eps foam will crack if your 20lb head is in it and it falls but not if there is nothing in it.
I don't think so, not that I heard anyway! The helmet is fine, not a scratch on it. The helmet cam took the impact, that is fine too :)
I once went to fill my old Z250 up some year's ago and the centre stand broke as I was putting it on its stand, luckily I grabbed it before it went over!!

Only tire slip I have experienced so far is rear in a light drizzle on paint. Took me a second or two to realize it after it had stopped slippimg. Surprisingly, it was confidence inspiring because it wasn't scary but predictable.
I bet that was quite an experience.
Am thinking about getting a bike and that fuelling-up thing was one of things I was wondering about to..so, nicely done Tommy. Enjoying the ridearounds on the island, keep it up!

Passed my MOD1 last week. Got my MOD2 this week. I love riding the bike. I’m 43 years old and should have done this 20 years ago. I’m not a fan of having my visor fully down I like the wind on my face at least some fresh air. I’ve only ever been out in the wind, rain and dark and love it. I can’t wait to wake up on a nice spring/summer morning at get on a nice road and chill. I’m getting the new Honda NX500 for my first bike. Petrol stations are slippy and you should get off your bike when filling up.

Did my CBT in June, and had a slide a few weeks ago, front wheel locked up in icy conditions, was lucky only 10-15mph, Was lucky enough to be able to ride home. (CB125F)

The good old petrol fill up dance. Honda Hornet with a stupid shaped tank, so when "full" a side to side wiggle and you get an extra litre in. Helmet on or off as had been said varies place to place. I tend to take it off as it gives my head a breather. I tend to wheel forward when putting my stuff back on, a car can fit in behind you to fill up at most stations and you arent holding anyone up. Great videos. Good luck and look after yourself. If in doubt, give way, most things on the road hit a hell of a lot harder than you
I hear you, it was 'almost' filled up for 2 minutes but it kept taking it! I asked in the shop and they don't ask people to remove helmets. Wish I'd known that, much less faff! That's a good tip about moving forward 👍
A simple trick i use on the CB125R (similar to any bike that only has a side stand) is to have a block of wood wrapped in old inner tube or rubber block that can level the bike to the upright position so when fueling it is as you would be sitting on it and being small you can put it somewhere in jacket or on the bike. try it - it works! works well on tarmac in summer also as increases the stand foot print.
Alright Lee, that is a good tip. Mine is not as snazzy as yours so it does have a centre stand. I hope to get a CBxxxR as my big bike so good to hear your tip for future use 😀
Be careful of that dry strip down the centre of the road Tommy its dry for a reason. The centre strip is the only bit that doesn't get cleaned by vehicle tyres and it's where all the oily crap gathers so could be slippery in places. Good to see you enjoying your riding to the full, ride safe and shiny side up.

Nice one Mate. I can still remember the 1st time I filled up, over 50 years ago! I had a brand new Suzuki gt125 and went out for my 1st proper ride on the 2nd day I had it, it packed up after about twenty miles! I must have spent well over an hour trying to start it, only to finally realise that it had just run out of petrol 🤤(idiot). As for removing your helmet, I have never been asked to take mine off, especially after covid when everyone had to wear a face covering. Have a great Christmas and get the rest of your test done 🏍.
You have a good memory! I bet it just had delivery fuel in in, same as a car - Vapours you get you to a petrol station! I did actually ask in the shop and they said no need to remove it. I meant to say about it but then I dropped my helmet and just forgot! I'll do my theory in the new year and crack on!

Another great vid.. You rode past another of those blow-up dolls early on in the video and I was wondering about it... Glad you explained at the end! Visits to the petrol station always seem to be a pfaff, I'm getting better at it, but only by having a strict order in which I do things with the keys and gloves and helmet and pump and wallet... Never enough hands! Keep the vids coming, the IoW scenery is totally different to South Wales so I enjoy just seeing that. Agree with others about the visor, I often open mine at lights or in slow traffic, to get a bit of air in, but I try and keep it shut the rest of the time.... stones, wasps, cigarette ends, you just don't want them in your face at 40 mph!
Thanks Malcolm. Ha that was probably the same one but I was heading in the opposite direction! I will just pay at pump next time, no reason to even get off the bike! I was saying to someone else, on my CBT my helmet was getting pelted with insects, I wouldn't fancy one in my eye. I normally ride with polarised sunnies of polarised photochromic lenses and it makes a weird effect with the visor, this is why I normally ride with it up. New helmet in the new year 😎
I'd recommend E5 fuel, it doesn't matter that much if the bike has electronic injection and you don't keep the fuel in the tank for long, but less ethanol is a bit better for the bike. Also, you can sit on the bike and keep it level while refuelling.
I'm not sure I've seen anyone selling that here on the Isle of Wight, but saying that I haven't been looking for it either 🤣 I'll keep an eye out 👍

I used to go to the garage in about 2015 with 60p in coppers and stick half a liter in when I was skint. The guy in the garage got all moany saying it's not worth me turning the pump on. I'm like, mate all the pumps are powered anyway and there's about 20 massive bright lamps on and all the tills etc. moral is they use very little fuel. 😁👍😎

I always find it easier to sit on the motorbike whilst filling up! You can rest the bike between your legs and keep it centred, so you know there isn't any empty space for fuel to go

the day before my mod2 i took some training, and twice i got to the 'stop or commit' split second at amber lights, so i carried on as i had plenty of time on a quietish junction, and both times my instructor told me that doing that on my test was an insta fail, as i could actually have stopped, albeit with a little sharper braking. i never had that situation on my actual test of course, but just something to bear in mind. @@TwoWheelsTommy absolutely - it's the safest option. i suppose someone could argue that stopping too sharply risks a motorist behind who's not paying attention rear ending you, but you can't legislate for what someone might do. my guy also made the point that a green light is only going to change one way, so the longer it's green, the more chance of changing and the more aware you need to be (which we all know). i'm no goody goody, and in the real world have done what we all do and that's try beat the light many times by speeding up, especially at roadworks, but when on your test you at least need to demonstrate you know the proper way, and like other things the instructor tells you hope they stick to stay safe. GL

Absolutely love these mate, we're currently mirroring progress, just filled up for the first time myself. Only difference is I'm sweating up a storm in Aus, and you're freezing your ass off over there! ALSO, I agree about visor vision, trust me, you get used to it and should! Road debris in the eye can genuinely be deadly, I got a small stone to the face and it drew blood, eyes could have really killed me in traffic!
Thank you, I wish it was a bit warmer here but I bet you wish it was a bit cooler over there 🤣 I normally wear either sunglasses, or photochromic glasses when riding, I didn't on this occasion as there was a chance of rain and I can't take them off with my gloves on! When I was doing my CBT a number of insects smashed into my helmet so I agree it is important to have the protection. A bee in your eye would HURT! Aslo having had a wasp entering and stinging me in my mouth when riding my mtb in the summer I can recommend keeping your mouth shut too 😀
@TwoWheelsTommy, I passed my CBT last year and rode all throughout the winter, and in doing so I have some advice for you reguarding the temperature. Invest in a nice neck gaiter one that can go over your mouth and nose. if you don't have pinlock on yourhelmet, I would massively recommend that for a visor that fogs up (if your helmet doesn't support pinlock, you can buy some anti-fog coatings which do help, I've only used the Muc-Off anti-fog spray which has lasted me a long time despite being a small spray bottle. Carry a microfiber cloth with you when you're out riding to clean your visor, you do not want to have a bee splatted against your visor with no way of cleaning it off nicely (also take some visor cleaning spray). I've not had the opportunity to buy heated grips yet but I would maybe pickup some Oxford ones for £50. Oh.. And always carry a tool kit, making sure you have the stuff to adjust your chain and maybe an emergency clutch / throttle cable.

First time I went to fuel up I had no idea the cashiers had to turn the pump on for you. So I must of pressed it like 8 times before they processed it. I could see one give me the stink eye through the window, must of thought I was an impatient A-hole.

Love the vids only thing I would recommend doing when putting fuel in your bike is by staying sat on it or put it on the center stand if it has one just so then the bike is level and easier to fuel up, your riding is quite amazing especially when you have not been riding long and I am coming up to riding nearly a year now so keep it up and I am excited to see what you get in future and always have some fun riding

@@TwoWheelsTommyMost places will announce over the loud speaker that you need to get off the bike and do not stay sat on it, for your safety. If you happen to spill petrol it will be all over your legs, and if you lost your footing and the bike fell the petrol will be all over the forecourt

First time I had to fuel up was on my actual CBT 2 months ago. I was bricking it as I wobbled onto the forecourt and alongside the pump. No dramas in the end but felt really sketchy at the time.

You might have to save up and get a helmet that has "pin lock" it works amazingly well. it fact one of the inventions that has most impressive me since comming back to riding after the 20 year layoff.
I've been reading up about that. The funny thing is I bought this hemet a couple of years ago as a photography prop, I had intention of ever using it. I'll be looking for a new helmet in the new year with pinlock 👍
I have the same bike, i usually pop it on the center stand when fueling so its level.
I think that seems like a good compromise, particularly if dismounting anyway to go into the shop to pay 👍
Spray a bit of wd 40 in the indicator then move it left and right a few times
Spray some in all the switches keeps them working a treat

It's nice to see your progress. I wouldn't mind if you continue to put out videos on your progress. I have no idea when I filled up petrol in a motorcycle for the first time, except that it must have happened in spring/early summer of 1974 as I got my drivers license in january of that year, or in december of 1970 if I count my 50cc bike. It's crazy that it is that many years ago. I am old and foggy and glad I remember the last time I filled it up (today at noon, fairly nice weather for an hour long ride in southern Sweden at 8C, a bit windy and damp roads). You manage fine, but I would recommend that you clean off the petrol spill on the tank. It stinks and isn't good for the paint :) Also, I have never lost a bike during cornering. Watch out for debris, mud and sand in corners, and don't slam your front brake in a corner. I don't think you can get a rear end slip on a 125F due to it's moderate power. Safety first, you don't have to impress anyone by taking risks.

@@TwoWheelsTommy Oh, and also be observant on black ice on the road at this time of the year. The road looks damp, but is covered by a thin ice sheet. It can be *very* dangerous.
@bolindow176 Black ice is nasty, we had an incident in my Dad's car when I was a kid - we made a diversion to the local supermarket for new undergarments shortly afterwards 🤣
Your speedo will under read by a fair bit - at 40 you are likely to be doing 36/37 mph. Have you fitted a Pinlock to your helmet? It makes a huge difference in cool or damp conditions. You road positioning is good, and your riding commentary is spot on most of the time, good anticipation and looking far enough forward. Also good to see the life savers being used appropriately. Personallyi'd say you over filled that, but each to their own!. If I take my helmet off I usually place it on the mirror as it can't fall from there. If you are going to wear jeans invest in pair of motorcycle jeans, even heavy standard jeans rip through in 2 seconds of road contact. I would have stopped at that light too. I guess you are on main beam deliberately.
Hey, I figured that as per a car. There is no pinlock available for this helmet, I'll be replacing it in the new year (This one was only purchased last year as a photography prop!) with a better one. You make a good point about main beam, I wasn't aware it was on but the switch looks to be set on main beam. The dash light is not on though so I'll have to check that. I would love some jeans but all the various ones I have ordered do not fit, I need to get to a big shop to try some on - bit of a drought over here in that respect, the local shops range would suit Mo Farah 🤣

I normally sit on the bike to keep it level when filling, however there was a petrol station once that said I had to get off to refill which was crazy.

@@johnrattigan450 Yes, if you drop it without the petrol cap on there will be fuel everywhere or if you spill it while filling up it could go all over yourself which nobody wants.

Refueled the first time myself last week 😂 felt like a proper grown up (im 27) 😂 some places prefer you take helmet off so to save hassle i take mine off.

Had a sticking hazard switch on my bike, wouldnt turn them on or only one side would come on.
Bit of gt85 in the switch and flicking the switch on and off rapidly fixed it in a few seconds then put a tiny bit of acf50 in the gap to stop the corrosion coming back

Definitely recommend sitting on the bike while filling up, keeps everything level and you get less splash back! Would also recommend E5 fuel
I'm going to give that a try next time. Someone else mentioned E5 and I wasn't sure if we had that available over on the island. Turns out it is just super unleaded 🤣

@@TwoWheelsTommy I highly recommend not sitting on the bike. If the cut out switch fails or some fuel gets on to the hot engine components and sets on fire, you're likely to get badly burnt as you won't be able to get off in time.
This is unlikely, but it has happened before. Always best to fuel off the bike, you can always just tilt the bike over to make sure it is level.
So much conflicting advice on this one 🤣 This one has really divided opinion!
Enjoying watching your videos ive been planning on doing my bike licence for a good while now but never got round to it for various reasons. Its an itch i need to scratch but this year is the year. Im going to start buying some clothing soon (i have nothing yet) and was wondering if you or anyone could recommend best first time rider gear including helmet, pants, jacket, gloves etc obviously the safest possible but with some kind of budget in mind. Hi Lewis, thanks for watching. Good on you for deciding to get on a motorcyle. I'll be making a video soon on the kit I chose as a beginner so that will be coming soon so be sure to subscribe. I'd start with the bits that will come in handy for your CBT, after all you might not like it! I would get some gloves for starters as they are not expensive and if they are not comfortable or fit correctly they could impact your ability to learn (I hate wearing gloves so this was important for me). I went for the 'Road 2.0 Short Mixed Gloves www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/675193/#/28313,3578,0 as they were recommended in Ride magazine and are excellent value for money. I have been very pleased with them. Other than that the school will provide you with any kit you might need but you will need some sturdy trousers such as jeans, and some shoes with ankle protection. I once snapped my key in the fuel filler cover. It doubled as my ignition key and I only had the one. Ruined my Sunday ride. If it’s stiff, don’t force it ;)

Here are tips ive learnt or copied over 30 years happy years of motorbikes. Heavy duty rubber gloves over woolly gloves are far preferable to "proper" winter bike gloves because theyre 100% waterproof, much cheaper and I can do the whole pay at the pump with clubcard malarkey without taking them off. Similarly wellies are far better than bike-specific footwear. I cant stand full lids either cuz they steam up and you cant walk in with one on cuz you cant see your feet. If need to pay at the desk to also buy a take a break i keep my lid on and lift the visor. For gawds sake fit a rack and box, dont mess with a bloody rucksack. Have a tyre gauge and floor pump in the garage cuz ppl ho months without checking their tyres. And if you have space and hydtaulic bike bench cuz its only £400 once and theyre brilliant. Buy a pair of 18" levers and fit your own tyres. Its a complete doddle with skinny tyres like yours.

I don't like how we have to leave the key in the fuel cap when refilling... not safe for security... CB125F 2018 owner here. 18:23 I also have a rear Michelin and I am after getting a Continental for the front. Continental Contistreet is what I am going for. Some previous owner put some Turkish rubber on the front which I really don't trust in the damp/wet "Anlas" I have spotted the odd one online but I would definitely not choose it!
I think it is perhaps so you can't ride away with the fuel cap off as fuel would go everywhere. Definitely worth having some decent rubber, the contact patch on the road is tiny so they need to be decent quality 👍
Hey Tommy have you done a top speed run yet? Mine does 60-65 when I’m sat upright but if I lie on the tank I can get 70…when I sit back up I slow down to 60 almost instantly….😁
Not conciously! To be honest there are not really many places to try over here, it's either not a long enough straight or up/down hill! I will give it ago if I find somewhere suitable. Haha that is quite funny, I bet the same will happen to me 😀

Just a small indication of what I do, and I see IoW is quite used to boating (obviously!)... go get yourself a couple red plastic jerry cans (10L) and keep fuel at home. Keep your tank brimmed all year round. 1) saves on wasting time looking for fuel & you know bike is always ready 2) keeps tank from air which induces corrosion by allowing more condensation/moisture. Ethanol fuels are BAD, BAD, BAD (did I say BAD?) for steel tanks. Brim the tank when finished riding so it's always ready to go.

I tend to climb back on to the bike to fuel it, it’s a ideal position to see what’s going on and you have it upright 😊👍

I filled up a couple of days ago for the first time……centre stand it, safer and it allows more fuel. Watch the bike too, mine handled a little differently or it was in my head….
I did consider a few techniques, this was one of them. I'll have to give this a try, nice one. The bike felt much heavier for ground handling but not once on the move.

Filled mine up 2 wks ago, key barrel was very stiff when trying to re-secure it. Was worried the key might snap 😮 Anyway apparently some WD40 or a drop of oil should release/lubricate it so job for next weekend b4 i go out as on Empty ⚠️

First time filling up my tank on a BMW GS850. I couldn’t open the filler cap. Apparently you have to wait a minute or two before it decides to unlock In the name of safety I’m told. How’s that

I fill up at my local tescos, I've never had any problems leaving my helmet on, some places might be different, lesson learnt tommy, never leave your helmet on the bike seat, we all make mistakes, luckily it landed on the camera, rule of thumb, you drop your helmet, you buy a new one it could have a minor crack in it that you can't see, some riders may disagree, but safety is paramount.
Yes actually I asked in the shop and they said there is no need to remove it. I fogot to mention in the video as I dropped my helmet as you saw. Luckily the camera took the impact, but I am meaning to replace it as I only bought this one for product photography, lucky I bought it in my size haha. I'll be on the lookout for a new one with pinlock etc in the near future and this can go back to 'prop' status 😎
pro tip: never place your helmet on the floor on a forecourt (or anywhere else, but never on a forecourt!), the floor might look dry but there will always be traces of petrol and that shit will dissolve helmet foam if it gets on it. I learned that lesson the hard way, ruined a £60 helmet.

Nice video mate your smashing it haha, lovely seeing you progress each day ✌️finally sort of off the crutches only can walk without for a good few minutes so I’m getting better went to get a new motorcycle jacket and have a look at some bikes, sat on a grom just to feel my old bike again 😢but what struck me was the Honda cb125r so I think in the new year I’m going to put down a deposit to hold it until I’m better 😊and also withe the patrol station in London I never had to take my helmet off except when I first got my new bike and ,y plate was coming back to a car 😂so he called me in and asked for my helmet and keys, ever since then no issue up where I live but always in Southampton the lady did seem a bit grumpy every time 😢but anyways hopefully your enjoying yourself maybe in the new year in the summer might see you when I pop over to explore 😂
EDIT… also you saying about you not quite hit the speed mate don’t put yourself in that position ever since my crash I’ve been telling myself where a safe I’m not using the limit as a target I will always do a bit under even if it’s 2-5mph under that will help you… it’s just hard because we can’t go the speed because it’s unsafe can’t do under because cars up your bum 😅

@LewisScales I think they are the best looking 125 for sure. I like the upright but meaningful riding position too, perfect for my beer gut 😀 I've always thought my big bike will be a CBxxxR. I can show you some wicked sights over here, might even get to see Ventnor before it falls in the sea (poor people living along that road).

I have same m/cycle, over here in Oz. I topped up 2 days ago with 95 octane petrolium, tank was 7/8 empty, so put in 10 litres. $19.80
And you have to wait in a queue to fill up your vehicle ! All appears very allien to me.

That is indeed a sad state of affairs. We too are experiencing harsh cost of living expenses, however would seem not to the extent as Britain.
Our petrol hovers arround $1.80 per litre (90 pence)
Have lived in England for 2 yrs. - working holiday - 1974 to 1976. Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Have fond memories ! and made lots of friends there, still keep in touch with some. Have an idea of what's happening in Britain.

Tip: Keep sitting on the bike especially when the terminal thingy is next to your bike so you can fill it up very nice, if you don't really trust it you can put the side stand on just in case.

Can i ride a 125cc automatic motorbike if i pass on a 50cc automatic as im nearly 20 yrs old.
I believe (in the UK) even if you do your CBT on a twist and go you are able to ride a geared bike on the road. I'm pretty sure it would need to be a 125cc twist and go though as the 50cc will not get up to the speed required on the road test. You shopuld double check with your local training school 👍

Right, I’m starting to suspect you’re actually a riding instructor who’s undercover pretending to be a learner to help newbies 😂… you’ve neither dropped nor low-sided the bike and have managed to avoid all the newbie pitfalls 🤨… of course I’m just pulling your leg! It doesn’t take too much common sense to be safe on the road and I think however you approach driving a car is how you approach life on two wheels. And props to you for continuing to ride through the winter. You’ll be ready for that full license pretty soon and if you keep riding like this, a big bike will only amplify the fun, and will probably be even easier to ride!
EDIT: Also, the biggest hazard at the petrol station is overfilling the tank and getting petrol all over the tank and on your gloves. Not fun! Also having to stand at a funny angle so you don’t spill any. This is the less cool side of motorcycling 😂

I do wear glasses, the polarization makes the helmet visor have some weird distortion so I keep it up. I'm off to watch Zoolander 🤣
You'll know why I was cringing with every spill. There is a hot engine and exhaust under the tank. Three spills were terrifying.

@tomrox8921 I wasn't sure to be honest so I had to google it. It looks like there is no ABS. Look at the CB125R instead I believe that might have it (but is more expensive - much better looking though!).

Not sure about funny, but as I am (un)fortunate enough to drive a few vehicles I *always* double-check what fuel I am putting in to make sure it's correct, ie diesel or petrol...
Not really funny but that crash I had was in fount off a petrol station 😢

You make a good point, but I have decided not to censor the video at my workshop for the following reason. I can't get in the bloody thing half the time even with the key! The neighbour is nosey and comes out to see whats up if someone so much as breathes, Aside from that I have CCTV inside and outside, a disc lock and a decent ground anchor/burly chain. It is not coming out without lots of noise!
