    'She's decided to join his climate protest' absolutely killed me.
    But seriously, your point about 'nostalgia' being a big thing in today's zeitgeist is one I fully agree with and you can see this with Taylor Swift's absolute resurgence in fame and popularity, arguably, she's bigger now than ever before. She's on a tour that's ENTIRELY about playing into nostalgia, she's rerecording and releasing her old music, gurl is the epitome of nostalgia. It's kinda clear, like you guys pointed out, that people definitely want that comfort, and a reminder of the simpler days away from the chaos, uncertainty, and instability now.
    There's another guy on here (Stuart MacLean) who had a video on how Eurovision winners respond to the 'need' and spirit of the times. Toy came after the #MeToo movement, Maneskin reminded everyone how it felt to be in a concert again during Covid, and that's an angle I find interesting to explore within the framework of Tattoo's potential. I agree, Tattoo isn't playing into nostalgia, but it's offering the same elements that people seek from nostalgia. Comfort, emotion, VIBES.

    I feel like you're underestimating just how well Loreen is likely to do in the jury vote, this sort of song feel like catnip for juries. It's a swedish pop song, with a powerhouse female performer AND it's Loreen. You mentioned that the Juries could chuck Let 3 a bone out of respect for their decades of experience and I feel like Loreen is gonna get a much bigger "respect" vote from the juries than they will. Like we don't know who the jury members are yet of course, but Loreen is highly respected in the industry and quite a few of the jurors are gonna be young artists who were in their formative years while watching Loreen win the contest in 2012. I feel like that nostalgia combined with the respect she has in the industry and of course the songs appeal itself will combine into a landslide jury victory for her. And when it comes the televote, I don't really understand why you think that most people voting won't know who she is, maybe it's america syndrome again. And even those who don't know will know since the commentators are obviously going to mention it. She's 100% going to get a lot of nostalgia votes, the only question is how much of course.

      and this wasn't edited lol! I personally love the song, especially the acoustic version, its brilliant the amount of power and emotions she put into her voice. Im not sure why people are upset and surprised she won. Its not just about nostalgia, but the fact that pop is always more attractive to the mature audience, which i imagine dint vote much due to work or w/e but she still did better on the televote than i expected. Considering ESC history, the jurors were always gonna chose her, doesn't mean it was rigged or anything, just that its more appealing. Ofc, cha cha cha is a vibe, but mhhhm its like gangnam style, a song that comes and fades. Till this day Euphoria is still very popular and i expect tattoo will.

    Artist option here. I think tattoo is all about immersion and being transported with it to another world, a kind of VR but on stage. Hence the smaller box does not work bc it becomes a sort of sculpture and not an immersive installation, it becomes visible and not a gate/tool to enter the immersion through into song's reality and Loreen's performance.

    I agree with your analysis that tattoo uses nostalgia. And I disagree, the song has been so incredibly popular and has been played on the radio a LOT. Even non-ESC fans will recognize similarities, and the question is whether it will be positiv, bring out the fuzzy feelings, or invite comparisons to euphoria.
    I think it will be the former, because people can be a bit more comfortable if they know what to expect.

    It's incredible to me how this whole analysis missed the cultural significance of the performance.
    The performance celebrates a multicultural society where all we care about is love and our connection to nature. Loreen is trying to use creativity to heal people. It's incredible how a performance celebrating Loreen's cultural heritage is sent to Eurovision Song Contest to represent Sweden. It shows that different cultures belong in and represent Sweden. In Europe and all over the world, we see how values such as conformity, tradition, and family are being used, or should I say perverted, to push back on and limit the human rights of e.g. the LGBTQ+ community and immigrants. This performance has a deep cultural meaning about inclusion and love. To me, the performance can be seen as a love letter to multiculturalism, but also nature because of the symbols used in the performance which therefore can be seen as serving a double purpose. We all have different backgrounds and are all deeply connected and dependent on nature, and in the end, life is about love. Without earth's ecosystems and all its elements we cannot survive, and without love and inclusion, our emotional depth or soul cannot be content.

I do not how to describe it but it feels like a complete explotion of cosmical peace 🤩 I dunno I know it just feels amazing. And I love that difference to Euphoria, which I also love but it is a whole differente universe of experience.
      Recently I just knew about her Amazigh ancestry and it blew my mind to see some of the symbols she's using in the panini press are from ther (or at least look like are inspired) XD and the performance clearly has the influence of her cultural heritage, I think it's an amazing extra layer to the narrative and symbolism in her performance and shows more of her spiritual side and connection with nature... Great as always! I really think people are greatly overreacting to Loreen, and I wonder why previous winners competing again haven't been quite as hyped nor hated. I think it has a lot to do with how much more year by year social media is becoming a greater part of Eurovision in general. Things like this used to be a fun detail in the records popping up in quizzes, not something that's actively debated. But then again, this is far from the Rybak case, for example. This is an actually good song that stands out, even if compared to Euphoria. And come on, comparing anything to Euphoria is near unreasonable. Even if you didn't personally remember Euphoria's win, you have probably come accross the legend in memes or sketches generalizing Eurovision. I too wouldn't prefer her winning again, but I wouldn't take it all that deeply either, and ultimately I'd be happy for her. I was a fan back then and sure, I can't help feeling something about it. But I don't see this as anyhing that special or new, nor would it start a trend or be some sort of uncovering of what has become of the spirit of Eurovision. Frankly, that's ridiculous. If it works, it works once, this trope too would die pretty fast. I doubt they'll be sending back Conchita next year or something, no matter what happened this year - not that I would complain. And maybe again in like fifteen years another previous winner as big as Loreen comes back with a songs _not_ about writing songs. And let's be honest, we would get a great 2024.
    But I'm also a Finn so actually nothing good has ever come from the wrong side of the Gulf of Bothnia. It's actually good for Finns (et al.) to behave grossly and spread rumors, serves those smug Swede boasters right. I'm revoking all of my previous apologetics.

    tattoo should definately be higher up on the meaning axis! i don't think she's vague with her answers about it, she's said mutliple times that the staging represents a safe space that we all can identify with, a place where we can charge and feel good. she chose to make it a desert-like place because her family is from morocco, but it's supposed to represent all nature. tattoo doesnt ask you to use your brain, it's asking you to use your heart! you're really spot on when you say it drowns you in vibes that's just what she wanted 🤣

    • @ZakhadWOW
      @ZakhadWOW Před rokem +4

      there is actually quite a bit of meaning in the desert setting, the costuming, the henna tattoos she has, and imagery flashing on the screen: all hearkening back to her Berber ancestry and the tattoos the women wear, risking punishment from Muslim authorities for doing so.

    • @fenzelian
      @fenzelian Před rokem +2

      Yeah I wouldn't say it's not a meaningful staging - but "level of meaning" seems to correspond more with something like "density of signification" - like how often or how much the staging gives additional information to what the song is already giving you, and how hard and on the nose it is bringing across that information. Perhaps stagings can be more "meaning-ful" when not as "full of meanings." Would definitely be curious to hear more about how much the song is about being Berber, or how much of that would be present overall in a Loreen show vs. being specifically associated with this song as well - not that that necessarily detracts from it.

  • @Hitezaruki
    @Hitezaruki Před rokem +3

    hahaha brilliant video! Interesting analysis about Loreen's situation.
    I agree Loreen doesn't use really nostalgia, but yeah, we live in a Nostalgia Zeitgeist and the the gap for "that past" has became shorter (I would say the pandemic make us "felt" like it just past an additional decade), so the song is surfing in that zeitgeist.. and I think tatoo is a great song by itself and talks more about trying to reconnect with love and nature (the universe itself)
    You can feel that Tattoo is similar to Euphoria, because the uplifiting dynamics and electronic sounds, but I would say you can feel kind "re-freshing" for this kind of song, a very huge different atmosphere, it feels more "cinematic" (and the performance proves it) and plays a little more with the melody (even if it repeats to make you "enter" int he song like a sand storm 👀)
    Also, I gotta say the part of the chorus when she sings TatooOoOoO and Youououou (and other some melodic parts) reminds me to last year's Cazzi Opeia entry "I can't get enough" for Melodifestivalen (which I love, she was my second favorite after Cornelia XD), and it blew my mind when I watched Cazzi Opeia was one of the composers for Tattoo ( I think it might be why you can feel a peculiar bright in the composition as you can listen in another Cazzi Opeia song -including her kpop songs)
    So, I conclude, one of the multiple reasons why I love Tattoo is because I feel like it is the sequel and evolution for Sweden from last year for me (like a pokemon or a good digimon evolution)
    As someone who love (an alwys will love) Cornelia's song, Hold me Closer, a raw, cyclic, sad break-up song and now having a more uplifiting break-up song with this kind of natural, cosmic destiny and atmosphere mixing with some kind of more frssh soundstyle like Cazzi Opeia's, it just feels amazing, and with Loreen's energy and performance, is like releasing a legendary pokemon on stage (sorry I couldn't make up another better metaphor at thie moment I'm writting this).
    idk I´ve been overthinking about this for a long time while listening Tattoo and Hold me Closer in my Eurovision Fav songs playlist in loop haha, and your video just made me think more and more about it :O
    And yeah, what's going on with Swedish ladies and break-ups!!? I´m not complaining at all, thanks to it, they had shared with us this combo of amazing songs that make my heart feel alive, tragic and happy at the same time :´) but I wonder....
    By the way, I just have this questions about the symbols that she's using and all of this tribal mood she has... I would like to know more about her inspirations, if it is something fictional or is it based in some of her ancestry or something related..? All her concept looks great!
    But yeah, the battle between boxes, aka Loreen vs Käärijä is set!! It's gonna be very exciting to see the final performances and results!!!

She specifically has her roots in Mauritania if I remember correctly (I will look that one up) and that is what she is referencing. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love their content and am absolutely aware that they have other things to do ("jobs and families and stuff"), but I just can't help but feeling a bit intrigued to why a Portuguese song never sparked their interest enough to make a video about it, especially when there's a few that would make great one (Telemóveis, Saudade Saudade).

    Just an artsy-artsy ESC addict chiming in to reveal the inspiration for the "Tattoo" staging that did indeed remind me of something: it's a fairly famous installation artwork by artist Pierre Huyghe "L’Expédition Scintillante, Act 2" from 2002. Plop this into Google and see for yourselves. It's basically a straight copy. The original artwork was a nod towards nostalgia, talk about Meta-Retromania...Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk... ;P

    • @overthinkingit
      @overthinkingit  Před rokem +2

      I'm impressed with your memory for modern art. However, this whole concept is minimalist enough so it's not weird at all that different artists could recreate the basically the same thing. And of course the Loreen version has light coming from BOTH the bottom and the top, whereas in the Huyghe installation the bottom piece is just a box. Not to mention that the Huyghe installation doesn't have a human figure as the centerpiece, the focus is just on the lights and not the body illuminated by them which really changes things.
      Still, this is something I would have absolutely referenced in the video had I known about it, thanks for the knowledge.

    As proud as I can be of Croatia being mad enough to go with this, and the rest of Europe being mad enough to vote it into the Finals, I can't stop feeling like my former home stole a victory from my current home, as I moved to Finland a few years ago. :D

    • @Eva-mp7xg
      @Eva-mp7xg Před rokem

      Don't feel bad. Only with a full set of 12 points (37*12 = 444) Käärijä could beat Loreen, as he would end up with 150+444=594 in that case. That was just impossible. Juries have finalized the result before televoting even began, by giving Loreen ESC history's biggest ever headstart (+92% points of the jury's 2nd).

What about Lazarev ONLY THREE YEARS LATER with another massively overproduced overhyped number? I would bet serious money you wouldn't have said the same thing about Johnny Logan, you GD hypocrite. Let's face it, you just hate Sweden's success and how well they can steamroll others. If it is popular with the juries and masses, who the f*** are YOU to bitch and moan? Just admit you hate that style of music and be honest.
      More importantly, aside from possibly your mother, do you actually think ANYONE one the planet gives one damn whether or not you want to throw shade at Sweden for "being a franchise"? Seriously, that is the most incisive critique you can make? Let's see YOUR technical/professional credential that justify you tryign to slam them for that.

  • @ZakhadWOW
    @ZakhadWOW Před rokem

    **** CRITICAL ISSUE TO REMEMBER ABOUT VOTING ODDS **** It in no way 100% accurately reflects Jury Voting and/or televoting, merely how much money is being bet by people who *want* something to win or not win. the "My Eurovision App", OGAE, or INFE polling situations are far closer to the actual Televoting results. Last year's multiple violations, and a full decade if repeated scandals have led to the Juries being completed removed from Semifinals - creating an effectively new reality - that voting odds will not be able to truly reflect. It's new territory and we're all very curious as to what will actually go down.
    TL;DR - Voting odds can give indications, but are absolutely NOT the way to try and actually predict the outcome.

    • @idomaghic
      @idomaghic Před rokem +1

      You.. need to look up how odds are actually generated; odds are *not* "merely how much money is being bet by people who want something to win", it's merely one factor in the BOOKMAKERS decision on what to put the odds at, i.e. they look at other factors as well, for example previous results, streaming numbers, etc.
      The odds you describe only exists in a few betting marketplaces (similar to dealing with financial instruments); the vast majority of odds are actually decided by a bookmaker.

      her only true rival is the unicorn from Finland (suck on THAT, Noa Kirel). And yet there are clearly reference points between ChaChaCha and Electric Callboy material.. Yet, amazingly enough, for anyone who understands the legalities of such matters, they know that it is NOT plagiarism to be inspired by something. Haters can sit down and rip almost anything to shreds if they try hard enough... Which at least involves some effort, as opposed to lazy-azz Yevhen in the comments before this one.
      I myself am a bit enraged at UKR sending an English-speaking NIGERIAN to be their only actual PERFORMER (his only tie to UKR is going to Univ there), with a music genre that has zero to do with Ukraine and it's culture, in an year where so many continue to push the sympathy angle for UKR voting. I'm not even sure what the actual UKR member of the duo is supposed to be doing onstage.. not actually singing that I am aware of or playing an instrument, that's for sure. As you can see, I have very specific and not entirely pointless objections. GIve me this song back in 2017/2018 for UKR and I would actually be supportive of it - but given the bigger picture at the moment, I'm furious they dont have a *true* Ukrainian act - I wasnt a huge fan of Kalush, but at least they were FROM UKR and sang in UKR and it was very UKR folksy music [aside from the abortion that was that rap segment... let's be brutally honest, that sort of HIPHOP rap is 200% **ONLY** an American cultural thing, even if it is adopted by artists in many different cultures].
