Language revival is an interesting subject to me, and I think a popular piece of music could help convince some people to learn some basics in a new language. If La Zarra does well, it would be a bitter pill to swallow not just for LPS fans but because it proves that we've yet to find a way of doing 'Celticness' well at Eurovision. 'Our' culture (though I realise calling it that is a stretch) was given a chance at Eurovision by France last year and by Ireland in 2014 - relatively similar songs, which both flopped. That it was in a Celtic language hurt even more - Wales' attempts at Junior Eurovision in Welsh have also been poorly received.

Celtic sound used to do very well for Ireland, I’m wondering if it maybe got a bit oversaturated in the 90s and maybe it’s due for a revival? Just not in the way Fulenn did it (I strongly think it was due to the bad harmonies and terrible camera work because it’s a great song on its own). I still love B*Witched, does that count 🥺

The key is to do it in a modern, accessible and impactful way. Not a camp (Can-Linn/Ryan Dolan), dated (Dervish) or esoteric (Fulenn) way. I'm so glad you brought up the way that televoters respond to what I basically call self-stereotyping. What you overlooked, whether intentionally or not, is that not every country can do that. That goes against our liberal ideals, but it's sadly true. Finland waited nearly 50 years for their first win until they sent a representative of their biggest musical exports, and have continued to struggle when they try just about anything else! Look at the televoters response to Rasmussen giving it full Viking for Denmark despite a relatively anaemic song. Donatan and Cleo are another excellent example.
It was this principle that, for Chanel last year, made me think it could be the rocket fuel in the engine of a consistently successful style of package, that it was Spain doing this instead of Cyprus or Armenia. They even tried it with the trumpets and the fan, but the night was Ukraine's for the taking. I think Spain's path to victory lies somewhere musically and visually between SloMo and Eaea, they just need to find it. (Rosalia, where are you?)
Germany might get a moderately better response this year, because few people who have ever thought about German music haven't at least *heard* of Rammstein. Unfortunately, this ability to tap into a televote by wielding your country's soft power is not a privilege that, say North Macedonia, Lithuania, San Marino, Czechia, and Malta have. Their ability to do well is narrowed to sending 'generic but good' or 'novelty/meme'. But, the beauty of Eurovision is that it's the perfect place to start building your soft power. Abba kicked that off for Sweden, but more recently, with a powerful combination of undue tragedy, imagination and doggedly hard work, it's paid off handsomely for Ukraine.
I'd love to know what everyone thinks other countries could do to tap into their soft power without haemorrhaging jury points.

    • @yosh66

Great surprise to see a video about this song! totally understand why you might avoid the weeds of Quebec/France discourse but there's an extra layer to the theme of the song being a self aware introspection on being "the voice of France" knowing she's Canadian, some people still say that the French spoken in Quebec is "not French at all". I really love how this song is a very self aware look at French culture and the French music heritage and i'm overjoyed with it as an entry.

This performance as drag is fascinating; so is the comparison to Voila. I was surprised to realize how much the songs had in common. I hated Voila's self-seriousness but really like this year's entry. Now that you mention it, the campiness probably has at least as much to do with it as the fun danciness of the song.

2:40 I think you said another important point earlier. Last years entry: It’s a diet version of Go_A‘s shum. At least that is what it felt like. The same problem will arise for Moldova this year, I think. It might not be as bad as with France‘s points, because… France will get „big-5-don’t-need-to-qualify“ deductions.
But France last year was a well made choice. It just wasn’t the right year, it was too close to something similar and more popular. …that’s also a prediction that I have for Loreen‘s entry this year: Its too reminiscent of „euphoria“, and not as good. I don’t think she win win.
I am not sure what I think about Frances entry this year. I have only heard the Studio version, and I am worried it might not work on stage, but otherwise, I am quite fond of it. I would have preferred it to be less disco, personally.

I find it funny that Europe's image of France is essentially American image of France in Hollywood. At least in the Nordics, I assume. I mean shouldn't we be much more aware of the diversity of each region round here? It's not like minoryty cultures haven't been seen before. I'm not saying it's the sole reason for Fulen's flop, but I think it's something worth examining in the future. It's also interesting how much better a lot of vaguely and somehow universally "ethnic" and/or subly orientalistic tones do in ESC than genuine local ethnic influence, although I think we've gotten past that mostly after the 2000's. For me the most Frech of the Frech entries have always felt forced more so than authentic and culturally representative. I'm glad at least they're being self aware about it this time😄

It was strange & weird, not to everyone's taste, and a song like that would have done tons better in the 20s in the running. I read the lyrics only this past week. I see “I dance with the devil.” When I saw the performance live, on peacock, last year, I saw the eyes of the performers, esp. the male singer. They were trying the convey the spirit of that evil. But definitely, a darkness entered into my soul. The song gave me a feeling of revulsion, the faces of the singers gave me the creeps. Of course they were performing. But I wonder if other viewers, both jury and televote, felt similarly.

It makes the style and retro feel of the music feel more pointed and ironic than a genuine tribute to that era of music. It’s a break up song for the French people and their government

The self-awereness of hetero-images is probably the strongest force in nation building. France is famously one of the first "nations" in a "modern" sense.

"Car après le beau temps vient la pluie", is not a 'close paraphrase' for the 'inversed' sentence; in fact, it is a rhetorical 'inversion' to create an 'inversed effect' on the audience; "Cuz after great weather comes rain". If it were an anastrophe (involving a syntactic change only and not semantic), then we could infer there's a paraphrase, but it's not the case here as the meaning's changed - reversed. If the auditor ought to imagine that after the rain, it is going to be beautiful weather again, anyway, it would be an overinterpretation; then we could have an ellipsis situation in our hands, in which the inferred part is omitted, but that's unlikely as La Zarra proceeds: "c'est ce qu'on oublie", "lest we forget", leaving no room for interpreting,
Great review tho, all's well put together, keep it up

So we're purposely not pushing it that hard because we don't want an unmanageable number of people on there. But if you check the end of the Rosa Linn video there are instructions, if you want in.

If France must send a Piaf knockoff every year to satisfy the cliché expectations, that's gonna be extremely boring. Maybe we should sent singers dressed as rats who'll be cutting courgettes and tomatoes on stage as well, just to be sure ?

Please make one for "Unicorn" (Israel) that talks about the Holocaust and the resurrection of the Jewish people, the ability of the Jewish people to heal people just like unicorn (the cure for Corona, Pfizer) and especially Israel, a high-tech powerhouse and a country with the strongest military in the world. The song talks about wanting a better future and leaving the past behind.
