Also the knowledge that Didenchuk is a member of both Go A and Kalush Orchestra was a passive knowledge in my brain before this video.
I would add to all of these the lyrics of the song itself. Not only they're in English, they also not as literal about war as Jerry Heil or Krut. Unlike them, they don't use the literal word war or some heavy sad talking about consequences of the war. They went much, much smarter than that. The whole song is just like some talking to russian government and/or russian people supporting the war and using some stupid arguments for it. And this talking is not like full of expected anger/sadness or something. It's a talking with a pride, with a head held high: "I cannot explain, tell you how I feel." "You try to act like a fool", OK, maybe, what can I do, I guess "Life is just a game and I'm playing for a win", so simply "Get out of my way cause I've got a heart of steel". And also there's a universal advice in the pre-chorus fitting to almost any life situation: "Don't be scared to say just what you think, cause no matter how bad, someone's listening"
Excellent points, this is something we'll address when we talk about Czech Republic. One of the criticisms "My Sister's Crown" received is that it's maybe too focused on peace, not enough on victory. The Ukrainian people don't seem to want to hear about peace. They want to hear about KICKING ASS.
@@overthinkingit I mean, it’s not like about kicking ass literally, it’s just mostly pride. My sister’s crown is a more general song about unity of Slavic countries. It was inspired by the situation too, of course. But the songs like that can only focus on peace, they don’t go way too deep

Also Maruv drama that started this fun tradition was less about her not wanting to be a "propaganda mouthpiece" and more about UA:PBCs last minute introduction of a a rule that prohibited artists who performed in russia and russia-controled territories since 2014 from competing. Maruv toured russia and was disqualified, and so the pissing contest begun.

As Ukrainian I feel like my fellow citizens perceive Eurovision a liitle bit different than the others. It's also because we never had a chance to show ourselves - Russia always tried to make us believe we are incapable to make great music. In 2014 it became even worse. Russian propaganda was spreading across the world and we needed to take actions. In 2023, when world has many distorted feelings about us (thanks to russian propaganda) we must present ourselves in a way Tvorchi do. We can't look at Eurovision just as a pop contest. It's a great way for us convince we aren't nazis or some other crazy stuff. And it's not like we love to do it, we should. Our lives depend on it. The entries before the war prove it. I know people from other countries will never understand our feelings towards the contest and just will say we are too political, and it's great for them! I don't think anyone should go through smth similar.

I think Czechia and Croatia's entries overshadowed this in the grand scheme of things.
Heart of Steel isn't a winning song on the surface and that's okay. I think one thing to appreciate about it is the lyrics can resonate with anyone (Basically a feeling of empowerment in any context), is pretty radio friendly and if Ukraine is gonna send something risky/out of the ordinary might as well be the year they automatically qualify.
I want to join the opinions of other Ukrainians here. This year, more than anything else, we want to simply show that our country is as diverse as our music. This year, Ukrainians are not aiming to win the Eurovision Song Contest. Now we dream of another victory.
p.s. I still regret to remember how many voices there were that we won only because of the war. Those people probably do not know Ukrainians. Victory with compassion is not our choice. We would like to win fair competitions.
Eh, I think it's a bit of both. People who vote are still people, and if you sympathise with someone, you're gonna like them more. If you're rooting for someone, they're just gonna sounds a little bit better. So yeah, maybe Ukraine would have gotten a few points less if Russia hadn't invaded. However, Stefania is just a fantastic song all around. Chances are they still would have won.
Didenchuk is bound to be at Eurovision in some capacity--in an interval by Kalush Orchestra, or Go_A, maybe...?

I was suprised Tvorchi was played before on college radio and some local stations in Europe before! With this song I could even see them get points from Australia, as it resembles some stylistic similarities to their greatest musical electronic export in the last 10 years, Flume.
Could you do a video about Croatian entry Mama ŠČ?🙏 As Croatian myself I'm not happy with my country's choice, but it would interesting to hear an intelligent analysis by long-term and impartial Eurovision fans

The main problem with instrumentalists at Eurovision is that they cannot play their instruments live anymore. So, what's the point? Krutь was the superior act. And she could have use a hologram of herself playing the instrument.

Since you brought up the American Song Contest again, it's starting to look like it might have been one-and-done. Executive producer Christer Björkman has confirmed that there will not be a second edition in 2023, and the production company is now aiming for a renovation on 2024. Do you think they should get their hopes up?
I'm sure someone will try it again, someday. But I'm not getting my hopes up. It's actually a fascinating case study on why manufacturing viral buzz is hard, if not impossible. They threw a lot at the wall: silly songs, serious songs, celebrity songs, all genres... nothing stuck.

You said we won once at 1:18m but we actually won two times (and it's three already): in 2004, 2016, 2022
Brilliant assessment as always! I think your points are all very correct and astute and I think there is just one more thing to add to it: I’m not sure this is a winning song, which is probably what Ukraine wants it to be. A top 10 sure, but its simplicity and lack of provocatively emotive score isn’t going to win the hearts of Europe in the same way Kalush did. I think Ukraine wants to avoid another potential win where some of their national broadcaster budget needs to be spent on hosting and being at the very centre of the Europe-wide media circus for a couple of months. The UK is obviously spending a lot on the contest as well (very nice propaganda for the UK too - a way to show they are supporting Ukraine without getting directly involved militaristically and risking even worse conflict with Russia) but doubtless Ukraine is also forking out in some way and probably worries about it; look at 90s Ireland for a good indicator, Eurovision nearly bankrupted their national broadcaster! The huge number of Ukrainian refugees in other countries now may push them further up the leaderboard but if a really solid song pops up from elsewhere this year, I’m not sure the 5 million spread around the countries with much larger populations is going to make a significant enough dent that Ukraine will get 12 points across the board in televote like last year (not that the diaspora was the reason for that at the time, don’t get me wrong).
That also means I don’t think the UK will push as hard for a win as they did last year either - they’ve got as close as they could and get to bring Eurovision back to the country once, I think the BBC is going to be like “nice, we did it, that’s enough for now”.
You know you have to make a video about "Mama ŠČ". You know you have to. You know.

You said Tick-Tock was at Eurovision the year before Russia invaded Ukraine (as in Crimea). Tick-Tock was from 2014, the year of the invasion.
Good catch. But what I was trying to get at was that this was their last pre-war Eurovision SELECTION (the NF final was on December 21, 2013), and then they returned with the grim "1944". What we should have said was, "Just a reminder, this is the song they picked for Eurovision right before they were invaded."

We were only talking about the period up to the invasion in 2014. We mention "1944" later.
If we were to correct they won 3 times now, but only once before the crimean invasion
I guess it's the perfect choice in the sense that this mediocrity is obviously not going to win ESC, so at least they don't have to worry about that... It's actually a very disappointing one since Maryna Krut's Kolyskova would have been a special entry and it was by far the most deserving option.

I wasn't blaming anyone for anything (as you seem to imply) and I think that last year's win was justified in many ways.
But 5 million invested home audience voters is factually a huge advantage. It's not more offensive to say than pointing out every year that some countries such as Romania and Lithuania are benefiting from their diaspora in their televotes, which is much smaller.
It was even pointed out on the overthinking eurovision videos dealing with last year's contest and with political voting.

1) I wasn't talking about last year.
2) It's factual that currently Ukraine has a large diaspora and that it is likely to affect the televotes. It's not finger pointing. It's a fact that was even mentioned on this channel.
3) You're not the only country that enjoys such an advantage at eurovision, and that is something that is taken into consideration among eurovision fans when discussing things like prospects to make it out of the semi every year. You must be new here. It's just that this year Ukraine has a particular big advantage in that. This is a channel that deals with overthinking different aspects of eurovision. Including expected televote turnout. Deal with it. It's not a discussion about cheating and nobody is saying that anyone "stole" anything.

But about diaspora it's not a fact it's just your guess, don't want to say triple time (that mostly our refugees live in Poland, in one country and they will be mostly affecting televoiting from Poland).
It's pretty important moment for my country, because i'm sure that for a ten years minimum everyone will be blaming us for "diaspora" and cheating.

Maruv live and work in ruzzia now. She did not condemned war and pretending that nothing happening. Ukrainians was right about her: she is lost cause.

your expectations are really off. It goes without saying that they won't have a happy neutral song.
It's an extremely generic electropop song out of context. The only thing that makes it "PoLiTiCaL" is missiles flying in our sky. And (as there's no real way to end this war from our side) the only way to avoid it is to not participate.
If you want political for this years ESC there's:
- Vesna from Chech Republic doing a girlboss makeover for a "brotherly nations" concept russia was feeding us for last 200 years
- Tone-deaf (pun intended) papody of russian regime from Croatia.
Dude the contest was started in the 50s as a way to bring peace to Europe after wwii and when the cold War was starting. One of Germany's first contestants is a Holocaust survivor with a song about his personal experience with it. Eurovision is and always will be political.
