  • In this video I show you how to quickly sprout sweet potato slips in soil. You only need three things to do this: soil, a container, and a sweet potato. In my opinion, this way is quicker than sprouting in water and you get many more sweet potato slips. In approximately 14 days, you will have copious amounts of sprouts forming on your potatoes.

Best potato video I've seen. It's to the point and in great detail for those who have never grown sweet potatos.

Your video was very encouraging. This is my first year growing sweet potato’s and I’ve followed your advice and 2 slips have sprouted after 1 1/2 weeks. I’m throughly excited!

Thanks for the great video. It’s nice to find a fellow southern Illinoian doing the things I am interested in

@@nuttygnomehomestead I have my potatoes planted. My strawberries are in bloom, and my Sweet Potato Slips should be ready within a week or so. Roma Tomatoes, Beefsteak Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Jalapenos, Sweet Peppers, and green beans are all started indoors. I grow all my lettuce indoors so I can have lettuce year round. I’ll plant a few more things as the weather warms up. How is your garden going?

Doing great. Cabbage is heading up. Broccoli is starting to take off too. Potatoes have been hilled up 2x and strawed. Tomatoes and peppers going in this week. Have around 100 sweet potato slips ready to go.

Great video! Do you plant the slips outside after the last frost date for your zone? I'm looking to grow my own this year after buying the slips in Missouri last year (I'm in east central Iowa). Thanks!

I am in zone 7A now, I like to error on the side of caution with the last frost date. Here, our last Frost date is in the middle of April. Sweet potatoes are heat loving plants. They do not tolerate frost very well. I will plant my sweet potatoes towards the end of April or beginning of May. This ensures not only the soil has warmed up more, but that there is no chance of a late frost.

Sounds good - and as I expected! I planted them for the first time last year and I thought it was a bit late. While I had a good yield, but there were also quite a few underdeveloped potatoes. I'm in the middle of 5a and 5b, so I'm thinking the second week of May might be good. I'll also have to try and start the slips indoors before that! Thanks for getting back to me!
