Let's take a look at magnesium for sleep or anxiety and when you may need to try something else instead. Sometimes, low magnesium is not the cause of your anxiety or sleep problems, and taking it can even worsen your symptoms.
The second part of sleep is called REM sleep. People with higher levels of adrenaline and cortisol tend to wake up around 2:00 am during REM sleep. Magnesium will not fix this problem because the high cortisol levels are not caused by low magnesium.
Stress and lack of exercise can cause poor sleep. Exercise, long walks, and physical labor can reduce stress and improve sleep.
If you find that you have difficulty getting to sleep because of racing thoughts and overthinking, you may be low in vitamin B1. Carbs, sugar, and caffeine can deplete vitamin B1. Taking B1 before bed can provide an immediate sense of calmness. Always choose a natural B1 supplement, not synthetic.
Instead of taking a melatonin supplement, it can be more beneficial to address why you do not have enough melatonin in the first place. Melatonin is inhibited by blue light. Darkness and infrared light recharge melatonin, so try getting sunlight or sitting by a fire.
Vitamin D before bed can help you sleep. Magnesium will not work if you're very low in vitamin D and vice versa.
If you're new to fasting and you go to bed hungry, it can interfere with your sleep. If fasting triggered your sleep problem, scale back, and begin fasting more gradually over time. Try incorporating more carbs at your last meal and increasing your carb intake to 50 grams per day.
Having plenty of sea salt on keto and intermittent fasting is vital. Salt causes your body to retain fluid, so not only will it help you sleep, but it can also help prevent waking to use the bathroom.
If you do need magnesium, try taking magnesium glycinate to help support sleep and reduce anxiety.

Dr Berg. You answered SO many of my magnesium /cortisol and fasting questions/ issues. I’d never get this info from doctor elsewhere. You are one in a million. Keep it up.
I was advised to take magnesium for leg cramps which I have suffered from for years, it’s transformed my life no more cramps
Which magnesium do you take ?
If I have restless legs or cramping I drink a shot of diluted apple cider vinegar. (1 part acv to 2 parts water) Then I sleep like a baby.
My leg cramps are gone after taking Magnesium Glycinate😍I also take D3K2.Thanks Dr.Berg.God bless you!🙌😇
Good luck
I just want to put it out there that I think potassium is important too when it comes to cramps and it should be balanced out with the magnesium.
Thank you so much, for these clear easy to understand breakdowns of the causes and differences between the various types of sleep problems.
I really, really appreciate your videos and all the research you do.
One of your most informative videos.Ive battled insomnia and nocturia forever! Dr gives me all kinds of meds

Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge!
Exactly my case. A lot of daily stress, no coffee, despite cannot fall asleep, finally fall asleep at 2AM and 3 hours later I am awake and feel energetic. Cannot sleep for 2 hours, finally fall asleep at 7AM. Have to wake up at 9 and feel like a zombie. This video explains very precisely how to handle this. Thank you Dr. Berg, God bless you for your valuable information 🙏🏻🕊️
As someone who has suffered from terrible anxiety and insomnia, I can tell you a little coffee is not the culprit. It's sugar and carbs. Especially late in the day. I drink one cup coffee every morning and have no problems sleeping. It was all the processed crap.
That’s also my sleep pattern 🥺
Same here, bed at 2, wake at 5 am. I gotta say, circadian rhythm is key. I sleep so good in Winter, worse in Summer. It's a pattern. Also, the season light exposure changes yet we adhere to a 9 to 5 or 6 a to 5 pm schedule. What happens is in the summer, the melatonin must be too low and the extra long daylight hours cause late bed time being shifted ahead. In winter, I could fall asleep at 8 pm, 9 pm. In Summer, it feels like I could go to sleep at 2 am 3 am. We're not living like animals..they get up and go to bed with the sun. Humans have it bad.
Note that ADhD causes dopamine dysregulation - we need dopamine in the morning to remove the melatonin and wake up optimally.
Thank you so much for this! First time I’ve heard of the carb connection and B1 recommended for restless legs, so glad I saw this video!!
I love you for this one! This answers the other issue! The first is the nutrition. I slept all night last night because I didn't take Vitamin D before bed. I took Vitamin B1. I slept all night. I am so happy and I feel rejuvenated. I am so grateful!
Did you take Vit B1 before u went to bed

Excellent, thanks!
Just got up and I got my first 18 hours of fasting without waking up with legs cramp
Dr. Berg, I started taking Mag-G a couple of years ago for night leg cramps, and it immediately took away my cramps. I easily fall asleep early, yet wake up between 2-3AM. Part of that was my guys snoring (he would fall asleep in the living room and come to bed at that time and wake me up) I recently started working out of the home and BOOM overnight my sleep schedule went back to normal and I'm sleeping all night until the alarm goes off. We both started Keto as well. We both notice we feel amazing while we're shredding weight. I take (1) 650 Mag-G daily, and that's all I need. The bottle says you can take (3) I started out at the lowest dose. There is no sense in taking too much if you can achieve your goal from (1) pill 😊 also, I don't have constipation ever. Mag-G is amazing, and it nearly worked overnight for me.
Does magnesium glycinate help with constipation? Or is it magnesium citrate?

hi Doc. hope this message meets you well. a couple years ago, you were advocating Melatonin; especially as an antioxidant. so what is it Doc?
I had restless leg syndrome for about 3 weeks. I was doing keto, fasting, exercising, taking magnesium and b1 and nothing was working. Eventually I took a chance and got an iron supplement as I suffer from heavy menstrual cycle. It worked in 3 days and I could finally fall asleep and stay asleep again.

I'm a big proponent of magnesium for stress and anxiety and tinnitus as I am autistic and suffer from ptsd and have anxiety issues and tinnitus. But I have never felt magnesium helps me sleep, and while I was working, I had to stay up late until I was tired enough to sleep, even though I took 1000mg of magnesium per day and smoked marijuana. Also, trying to eat a lot of green veggies to get high levels of magnesium can cause thickening of the blood. My wife has this issue because her culture eats a lot of greens and her blood is so thick she has circulation problems and physical exertion causes her chest pains quite often. Good info in this video that most don't know.
this is bonkers

Hi Dr. Berg. Which is the best form of magnesium to take for hypertension and anxiety? Thank you for your wonderful videos.
Magnesium glycinate the brand pure is one of the better brands out there on the market. I’m not a doctor, but do some research and you’ll see magnesium glycinate is the way to go.
It’s hardly surprising we get confused too much conflicting information these days.
Well done, again, Dr. Berg! My wife and I will now add D(andK) into our pre-bedtime stack. We are both usually sound asleep in 10 minutes or less after lights out. For me, someone who suffers chronically with poor sleep due to what I suspect to be a high cortisol situation, the combination of magnesium glycinate and calcium Lactate works like a charm. Not too much mag though. Even a little too much and I don't sleep. I have a theory that it can upset the balance of potassium, which causes one to not be able to relax. Doing mundane tasks like knitting and sewing really helps me with stress. I have CFS and can't exercise atm.

Magnesium is also high in sunflower seeds. In fact, I found out I was deficient in magnesium when I had a headache, and ate some sunflower seeds then observed that my headache went away. I began supplementing magnesium, and I stopped getting headaches related to cervical degenerative disc disease.
New favorite word - Carbage. I too have cervical degenerative disc disease, Osteoarthritis, and Psoriatic Arthritis - sad how we get used to living in pain. I've taken Life Extension Mag-Threonate, and a cheaper Mag-Glycinate - still wake up at 2 am every night.
I was taking Magnesium in the morning, not bedtime - perhaps that was the problem.
@@Lola-tq8nv Thanks for the kind response. I hope taking magnesium glycinate and threonate before bed helps. Magnesium has changed my life. Best wishes!
PS: You may also want to look into ashwagandha, benfotiamine, and (organic unfortified) nutritional yeast. I also take those. I believe ashwagandha has helped with inflammation overall, and that benfotiamine has helped with neuropathy. Make sure it's magnesium glycinate and not the other magnesium. Since I bought the glycinate type sleep is much improved. Will add the B1
I agree glycinate works well for me for my sleep. I was taking the citrate form and I was awake the entire night so I started taking glycinate and now sleep so much better.
There are MANY forms of magnesium, all depends what you’re looking for.
I found any type helps me, otherwise I'm up in the middle of the night if I can even get to sleep. Lately I've been using occasionally using melatonin to just get to sleep and magnesium with it to stay asleep. With that I'm getting 7hrs and well balanced Light/REM/Deep, according to my watch. Without I just get 90% light sleep and maybe a sliver of REM if any and I wake up tired.
I've not tried glycinate yet, but that's on my todo.
For anyone who took calm...they changed their mag from the kind we all needed to the make ya poop kind!! No wonder whyour 16 yr old stopped being so mellow and started with random poop issues lol
I first started with the citrate during the day since it gave me energy but when that stopped I started taking it at night and It’s helped so much with my sleep and now I wake up with energy instead of feeling exhausted and tired I love it
*Recently I discovered just how low I am in magnesium. There were some issues with blood pressure medication, so had to discontinue it for a while. I suffer from anxiety and have a hard time sleeping too. So, after watching many Dr Berg videos on magnesium, i tried magnesium glycinate in the am and magnesium l-threonate in the evening. The surprise was that my blood pressure is now normal :
115-128/70-76; heart rate also fell from about 82 to 72 bpm. Falling asleep is easy now too, Of course the magnesium dosage will have to be adjusted later as needed. With Dr. Berg sharing so much info and research I now understand how "knowledge is power"! 😊
Thank you for the valuable information, Dr. Berg!

I never useto struggle with falling asleep. Now i do a little more. In my 40s now, stress, cancer treatment etc. I started using cbd with melatonin and Chamomile. It helps! I fall asleep and stay asleep with occasional waking up to use restroom. Thank you Dr. Berg

There seems to also be a potassium component for sleep. Potassium helps you stay alseep from waking up every few hours throughout the night. Most people are normally potassium deficient.
Research suggests that the amino acid taurine supplementation can improve sleep efficiency and reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. Additionally, taurine has been shown to enhance REM sleep, which is crucial for cognitive function and mood regulation.
Thank you, very helpful.

It also depends on what effects you are wanting help with, since becoming pregnant I'm dealing with constipation, glycinate doesn't help but citrate does by drawing water to the colon.
