When Harry Maguire powered in that header against Sweden in the World Cup 2018 a new English cult hero was born. Following another solid season with Leicester City Maguire became most expensive centre-back in the history of British football by moving to Manchester United.
Four years later, Maguire is no longer an automatic starter at the club and is the subject of frequent social media mockery. So, what happened?
Seb Stafford-Bloor explains. Marco Bevilacqua illustrates.

I think Maguire should move to West Ham. David Moyes >> Jose Mourinho in 2023. Moyes plays a bus-parking compact low block with maximum protection from double pivots. Nine men behind the ball just Bowen and Antonio chasing every long ball. Imagine set-pieces with Maguire and Soucek up there challenging for every header

  • @elyascorreanogueira
    @elyascorreanogueira Před 11 měsíci +1803

Maguire's main problem is that he's as inflexible as a player can be when it comes to style of play. The reason Mourinho coveted him, Ole ended up signing him for United and he always plays for Southgate is that he's excellent at playing in a reactive side without much ground to defend behind him, making his lack of pace a lesser problem. He obviously isn't a world-class defender but he helped improve United's general defensive stats in the 19-20 and 20-21 seasons.
The moment Ole tried to move up the lines without a pressing striker, which overran a midfield that already wasn't good, and without a sweeping keeper behind the defense, he was doomed. Add to that how hilarious/baffling some of Maguire's mistakes were during last season and you got a easy punch bag.

Maguire is ultimately better suited to teams that play on the back foot, sit deep and look to counter. Which is why he looked so good for England, Leicester and Utd in the first year. He’s woeful when playing on the front foot and pushing on. I still think he’ll be great going to a team that suits his playing style

    • @ComradeOgilvy1984
      @ComradeOgilvy1984 Před 11 měsíci +27

Exactly. He simply lacks the pace on a good day to hold a high line and man mark a fast forward. It is just a ridiculous match up. Southgate does not ask him to do that, nor did Ole in his first season at the club. Leicester was content to sit deep and, when given the freedom, his ability to jump in and nick a ball to start the counter worked well.
Frank LeBoeuf (ESPN pundit and French WC champion) said that he could have played with Maguire, but he would want Maguire to roam in front of him -- basically a deep CDM who is not responsible for the back line at all. While that is not quite how Maguire plays for England, Maguire and Stones have seemed to figure it out, and John does not let Harry get exposed.

This video didn't go into detail, but signing Maguire took United to 3rd and 2nd in the next 2 seasons with one of the best defensive records in the league and Europe.
What changed last season (including the 5-0 game) was that United lost all defensive structure at the start of last season after Ronaldo joined. Go watch the game again, Salah, Mane and Firmino were 3v3 against Maguire and Lindelof all game. Sometimes 3v2 lol. Why should that happen? And why was that entirely blamed on Maguire. He isn't bad for England because national teams generally do not possess the level of coordination to pull of an effective press like clubs do. And England, like most national teams do not press as high as club sides. So, there is a narrower gap for opponent counters that he is ill suited to defend against. He can't do much about that lack of pace. But, he can learn to read the game better which he hasn't done over the years. Otherwise with most top teams favoring high pressing, his fortunes isn't going to improve, unless he moves to a team that sits deeper.

Maguire's main problem is that he is surrounded by people and friends who give him the worst possible advice and motivation due to which he has never been able to assume any sense of responsibility for his poor gameplay and horror mistakes. Instead, he keeps on deflecting and denying any of his mistakes which makes it impossible for him to be able to improve his gameplay and mentality. And it is only going to get worse for him with this sort of attitude regardless of the team he plays for.

He's really not a good defender, I don't know why so many people are desperate to defend him. He has one good trait which is winning aerial duels, hence why he looks ok in a defensive system where he is very protected and his only job is to just head away balls from the box. If he has to play in any system that is more front foot he is terrible. This is due to him having a low footballing iq, bad decision making and being drawn to the ball like a cat to a lasor dot. He is also slow, immobile and clumsy. Furthermore, what makes him genuinely unlikable is his inability to accept blame or criticism, he never improves cause he never critically analyses his own game, and he frequently blames teammates for his bad performances. He's a good player, but he isn't the all around defender that his price tag warrants. He isn't set up well enough at United to take advantage of his strength, instead, he is set up in a way that will just highlight his flaws. It makes sense that he was solid at first, but as soon as teams started to figure them out more, he crumbled. For England, he has everything going for his advantage. He has been able to play in a 3 at the back under Southgate for much of the time, or he is at least always next to Stones. That partnership works well for him because Maguire doesn't have to be the guy to pass between the lines to break the midfield because Stones is much much better at that. Even the threat of Stones breaking the midfield with a pass should warrant opposition teams to have more players blocking his channels, which only gives more space for Maguire to carry the ball. Southgate is also very comfortable sitting back and playing Harry Kane hold up ball and winning set pieces which also is great for Maguire.

At United Maguire was bought by Ole to play a certain system, and that was counter attacking football.
A deep back line basically holding hands with the wing backs and McFred in front of the centre halfs, literally parked on the edge of the box.
Tactically, It was a back six that relied on individual moments from the attackers to win games, usually scoring from a ball that was played over the top. There was no real style of play and the football was dreadful. Most games were won by narrow margins.
Some United fans called it Ole Gunnar 'free style'. This approach kind of worked with consecutive top four finishes. But those were the Covid seasons that didn't have fans at the grounds.
However, by the time of the 2021/22 season, teams and coaches had figured United out and often played a low block themselves, which they struggled to breakdown.
Maguire was regularly exploited as being the weak point within the backline. He was repeatedly caught out of position as United were stung on the counterattack. Where as, the better teams pressured and pressed the life out of the defence that clearly had no pace or the ability to play out from the back.
Maguire was intended to be a dominant ball playing centre back that was good in the air in both boxes. Realistically, he was none of that. He lacked pace, frequently getting turned and showing strikers on to their stronger foot. Also, he seemed to struggle with low crosses. The 2020 Europa League semi-final against Sevilla and RB Leipzig away defeat in the UCL the following season are some of the many examples.
On top of that, the over-inflated transfer fee, poor coaching set up (at the time), and the idiotic decision to make him club captain after less than six months was a recipe for disaster.

In my opinion, players like De Gea or Chris Smalling had stronger claims for the captaincy. Both had been at the club since 2010 and 2011, respectively, with experience of winning league titles and other trophies. Whether they would've been any good in the role is another story.

His first season, he was captain to a relatively inexperienced team (Matic being the most experienced in the dressing room?), that worked for him since he didn’t have major credentials himself & was learning on the job. In subsequent seasons, with players like Varane & Ronaldo incoming, it would have given his confidence a massive hit, he can’t lead a Varane or Ronaldo. Best for him to play elsewhere and recover his confidence, there is a player in there. Ronaldo’s incoming was too much for this dressing room to take, even Ole. Ole, just like Maguire, could only thrive with a young team.

All i hear are excuses for a freaking 80 million man. Van dikj was bought and he lifted matip, Arnold, gomez's game.
Ruben dias was bought and he lifted his fellow defenders game. Even stones who was on is way out eventually began to improve.
But somehow for "Caption Maguire" we keep making excuses for him.
I remember the stick linedlof and baily received for one or two mistakes. They were almost crucified.
But for slab head we find a way to make excuses for him. A freaking aging Tiago silva was bought and he turned Chelsea defense for the best.
Look at lisandro we bought, see how he lifted the game of everyone around him.
Thats the Hallmark of a great defender with great character.
This pandering and making excuses for an average defender has to stop. His continued presence in the English national team backline says alot about the incompetence of there backroom staff. A team which has tomori, ben white, stones, mings, ben mee but somehow finds a way yo justify including the fridge is just plain stupidity at this point

Maguire hasn't committed many errors this season, but playing him means united have to scrap playing a high line to avoid counter attacks.. plus he is a very slow decision maker.. so often, when building from the back, Maguire dwells too much on the ball and doesn't attempt line breaking passes nearly as much as Lindelof, Varane or Martinez.. and most importantly, he is very vulnerable when pressed, added to that De Gea being equally weak under a press made us very weak in build up play..
He doesn't deserve the abuse at all.. but he just doesn't fit Ten Hag's system..

Look at the other overhyped failures in Sancho, Wilshere, Oxelade-Chamberlain, Walcott, Bentley, Ross Barkley, Penant, Micah Richards, Loftus-Cheek, Dele Ali etc - these English players were given too much hype before they achieved anything great. A ball-playing issue he has is that: when he picks up the ball, his infamous signature move is "carry the ball three steps forward, play back pass, drop deeper than where he originally was". This is a huge problem. Lindelof and Martinez are good at progressing, while Varane is initially less capable of this but now improved. Everything can be attributed to confidence but I regard this is more tactical and habitual. Defensively he qualifies as the 4th CB. In ball-playing I guess only De Gea is worse than him in the squad.

I always love and appreciate the insight you guys give when it comes to this game. It’s been beyond beneficial. I have to be very honest though. There were areas in this episode that was utter rubbish and a bunch of excuses in relation to the earlier points.
Yes, there has been changes in managers but Maguire isn’t the only one who had to deal with the change. Those blunders persisted with each manager. Ole gave this man so much rope it’s not even funny. Lindelof still remains in the rotation with ten Hag and he’s dealt with manager changes since José. There are plenty of players on the England national team that dealt with managerial changes and that’s never been an excuse on their performance. Before the Boehly takeover, how many managers did Mount, James and Chillwell deal with and yet their game didn’t completely falter at Chelsea (excluding injury). I’m sorry, a lot of players deal with managerial changes and style changes but that’s a very weak reasoning here for Maguire.
The national team game play rhetoric is pretty old and played out. Let’s be very honest, during national team play players are playing 3-5 games during a summer tournament or international break. Maguire plays 30+ league games along with cup tournaments. That’s who he is. A slow, uncoordinated and awareness lacking CB. Dejan Lovern was decent for country but no one cared because we all knew he was a terrible CB for Liverpool at a club level. Whats asked of him on the national team level isn’t as technical on a club level. That doesn’t necessarily mean he plays better. Harry Maguire is between a below average/average CB at best with limited speed and poor positional awareness. He was never more than that regardless of manager.
