When Harry Maguire powered in that header against Sweden in the World Cup 2018 a new English cult hero was born. Following another solid season with Leicester City Maguire became most expensive centre-back in the history of British football by moving to Manchester United.
Four years later, Maguire is no longer an automatic starter at the club and is the subject of frequent social media mockery. So, what happened?
Seb Stafford-Bloor explains. Marco Bevilacqua illustrates.

I feel like I'm genuinely one of the few that really hopes he has a redemption arc for his next team.
Seeing all the abuse he is receiving on social media, I hope he move to a "smaller" club where he can rebuild his confidence away from the limelight
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Bruh, he will be fine in slow pacing team than a high line playing team..
He can get his redemption arc at Fleetwood Town or something 😂😂 he needs lower league football, that’s his level. Then he can build himself up again
I think Maguire should move to West Ham. David Moyes >> Jose Mourinho in 2023. Moyes plays a bus-parking compact low block with maximum protection from double pivots. Nine men behind the ball just Bowen and Antonio chasing every long ball. Imagine set-pieces with Maguire and Soucek up there challenging for every header
Maguire's main problem is that he's as inflexible as a player can be when it comes to style of play. The reason Mourinho coveted him, Ole ended up signing him for United and he always plays for Southgate is that he's excellent at playing in a reactive side without much ground to defend behind him, making his lack of pace a lesser problem. He obviously isn't a world-class defender but he helped improve United's general defensive stats in the 19-20 and 20-21 seasons.
The moment Ole tried to move up the lines without a pressing striker, which overran a midfield that already wasn't good, and without a sweeping keeper behind the defense, he was doomed. Add to that how hilarious/baffling some of Maguire's mistakes were during last season and you got a easy punch bag.
The best description of the entire situation in a nutshell. Well done.
Again, this is very surface level and reductive. Utd started playing deeper in 21/22 than in 20/21 (his best season at the club). Pep also coveted him you know.
He's still the most expensive defender in the history of football ... it just shows how drugged is the Premier League market and how poor was the ManUtd management at the time
@@Unison23 then explain it better yourself.
TBH I think it's incredibly impressive he's reached the heights he has despite being one of the slowest players in the league. So many other defenders rely on their pace to get them out of holes.
The graphics and visuals on this video are superb. Great job by the Tifo team on this one.
The thumbnail is REALLY good too.

I will never forget the legendary headbutt to Ronaldo, or the scorpion kick to Pogba. Or when he was calling for a handball to his own teammate.
What a legend
or when he celebrated the goal of his opponent team
@@valt1337 Or when he pulled Luke Shaw to let Tottenham score. He's the GOAT 🐐
Or when he injured Martial when Sevilla scored
@@HomethaSick I remember watching that live. I just stood there with my mouth open in silence. I genuinely couldn’t process what he did😂
Or when he did the no look tackle 😂
Maguire is ultimately better suited to teams that play on the back foot, sit deep and look to counter. Which is why he looked so good for England, Leicester and Utd in the first year. He’s woeful when playing on the front foot and pushing on. I still think he’ll be great going to a team that suits his playing style
Exactly. He simply lacks the pace on a good day to hold a high line and man mark a fast forward. It is just a ridiculous match up. Southgate does not ask him to do that, nor did Ole in his first season at the club. Leicester was content to sit deep and, when given the freedom, his ability to jump in and nick a ball to start the counter worked well.
Frank LeBoeuf (ESPN pundit and French WC champion) said that he could have played with Maguire, but he would want Maguire to roam in front of him -- basically a deep CDM who is not responsible for the back line at all. While that is not quite how Maguire plays for England, Maguire and Stones have seemed to figure it out, and John does not let Harry get exposed.
Tottenham, anyone?
You mean when he gets to hide behind others and doesnt get exposed.. Not gonna cut it at the big clubs

The problem with maguire for me as a united fan is that he doesn't want to blame himself in so many mistakes that he was created. I remember the game against burnley when he was blamed the attacking side for not scoring two goals to win the game.
Exactly, watched many of fail compilations and a lot of them show him making a mistake and gesturing towards someone else, think that contributes to a lack of empathy for his troubles.
Exactly, no accountability
There was a game 2 seasons ago where he blamed the "Weather" for getting a yellow card from his tackle.
Do you remember that interview last season when the team was pathetic and he said I keep getting picked every week so I must be doing something right…
When asked why he keeps on starting for Man U: “because I’m the best CB at this club”
The big thing is his lack of accountability on all fronts from the whole Greece debacle to his performances to his agent talking down on people like DDG in the media. He’s never helped himself with how he carried himself and I think the biggest downfall was giving him the armband. Ramos would always tell CR7 to shut up & his performances would merit those words to be taken in account. But this guy would mess up and come out saying the strangest things about collective performances in post match interviews.
I've heard there was a language barrier issue that may have to do with the greece incident.. but everyone speaks English these days so I feel that is bullocks.
I think Ronaldo coming in caused Maguire to lose his authority in the dressing room
@@themysteriousstranger6498 no it was ten hag
@@themysteriousstranger6498 he never had any authority in the dressing room. He’s not a leader.
In fact many of the problems at United are directly caused by managers being forced to play him. Rojo spoke about it after he left the club and how solskjaer told him he was literally forced to play him by the glazers bc of how much money he cost. There’s also a lot coke out about him and other English players being behind links in the dressing room, particularly him and Rashford.
Nobody ever had any respect for him as a leader or a player from the beginning.
@@FearTheIndoorHorseRancher Rojo couldn’t even get a club in Europe to sign him so he had to go back to Argentina. Don’t you think what he’s giving to the media is him trying to save face and massage his own ego?
I can say that this guy now is another version of Karius. His confidence is shattered
Karius was just one game Maguire is his entire career
karius made one mistake, maguire makes mistakes game after game after game and you can’t just do that at a top level club, and him having the armband doesn’t help either
@@mydeadtrim Except he didn't. He was quite competent for a time
before madrid incident, he was the best even people named it as neuer replacement in germany international team. His mistake cost him being mocked and humiliated by liverpool fans, makes his confidence fell really down. I guess you can say "You’ll Walk Alone if you screw up ucl final"
@@joshuagunaydosiemuel9593 I laughed so hard at this lmao
He has very bad awareness for where the opposition players are. He simply does not scan. In a team that's pressing high and building from the back, that's a very bad trait.
I think he's still a decent defender but no longer fits the way Man Utd play.
Also he's pretty poor with the ball at his feet for a modern centre back. mourinho loved him because he would have been amazing 15 years ago in old school long ball football. Now honestly he looks championship level.
He's not even "decent" at all. He is terrible at pretty much all the aspects of the game that are relevant to a defender. I can't think of any half decent quality he has, except for maybe heading, and even in that he's average at best. I've been watching football for 25 years and I swear I've never been a defender at this level be so consistently bad.
That 5-0 loss to Liverpool will go down in history as one of Maguire's all time legendary performances. Truly unique player.
He legit looked up in the sky and asked god why .... MFKER I LL TELL U WHY, ILL FN SHOW U WHY... holy marionette fk
You forgot that 6-1
But only if you take all context out of the game. Maguire played the same way he played previously which was incredibly successful. This video didn't go into detail, but signing Maguire took United to 3rd and 2nd in the next 2 seasons with one of the best defensive records in the league and Europe.
What changed last season (including the 5-0 game) was that United lost all defensive structure at the start of last season after Ronaldo joined. Go watch the game again, Salah, Mane and Firmino were 3v3 against Maguire and Lindelof all game. Sometimes 3v2 lol. Why should that happen? And why was that entirely blamed on Maguire. It's frankly abuse, but that's another conversation.
It started in that 6-1 lose to Spurs....He literally pull Shaw out of his way to defend. 1st of his kind
@@tombrady5587 Because he is the skipper ? ur defending him again with 0 reasoning ... just get him out!
During his first two seasons at the club, when Ole had the team playing purely counter attacking football, he was great. There’s a consensus that if he wasn’t injured for the Europa League final we probably would have won the game as we conceded from a set piece.
In that third season when Ole wanted us to be a bit more expansive, playing a higher line, it all fell apart as his lack of mobility was then exposed.
in 20/21 he actually played in a high line with a half decent sweeper in henderson behind him, and he looked really good. i think it’s less a lack of mobility (something which CBs like ruben dias have and are fine with), and more that you’re putting a man with confidence issues in a team he can’t trust the ball with. there’s a reason pep desperately wanted him at city
He also actually had an excellent, almost flawless season this year under Ten Hag. But the internet ruined him. Jumped on any little mistake he made and ignored Varane and Martinez shipping goals for fun (like the 7-0 hammering).
Dude, in that Europa League campaign you conceded a lot more with Maguire on the pitch per average than without him. Did you remember the games against Roma? He was bad, really bad.
I remember that consensus as well around the Europa League final. That was even despite the clownshow in the 6-1 home loss to Spurs.
No idea why he fell off a cliff after that, the mistakes just became more glaring and frequent. Even more surprising that he still gets picked for England (well, Southgate has his favorites), and he still performs well for them.
@@jhpfdijtuiweruot
Flawless season? Did you watch a different game? The only times he was good, he was on the bench.
I am not claiming that the others were good but Maguire was extra bad.
Nothing. He was typically overhyped by the toxic British media, overvalued because he's English and finally got found out. He made so many mistakes at Leicester. Overrated.
Jonny Evans was way better than him in their partnership
if the media are hyping someone up how does that make them toxic
It gives them a huge ego and makes them less likely to accept constructive criticism
Why does the English media always make excuses for Maguire his a professional thats why he gets paid all that money 💰 playing under different manager shouldn't be an excuse hows Shaw adapting ?😊
how has he had excuses made for him he has been criticised in the past two years more than most footballers ever will
They're gonna need an update to this video 😤
He isn't bad for England because national teams generally do not possess the level of coordination to pull of an effective press like clubs do. And England, like most national teams do not press as high as club sides. So, there is a narrower gap for opponent counters that he is ill suited to defend against. He can't do much about that lack of pace. But, he can learn to read the game better which he hasn't done over the years. Otherwise with most top teams favoring high pressing, his fortunes isn't going to improve, unless he moves to a team that sits deeper.
Better take than the pundits
Exactly, he isn't "better for England" just under less pressure and so he doesn't appear to make as many mistakes. A better player would also look fine in that spot.
"his fortunes isn't going to improve, unless he moves to a team that sits deeper."
Like Manchester City, for example.
yeah he should move to a different team or even league if he want to regain his confidence
Ole's MU statistically was pressing more than ten Hag's and Maguire gave a giant boost to MUs defence in first two seasons despite team lacking holding midfielder and abysmal DDG form.
His luck of adaptability is key a naturally talented player would be capable of switching places and up there performance we saw this with Luke Shaw after suffering a double injury his form suffered, got fatter and looked like he was on his way out however he soon adopt to his new situation and now his a key player to the club.
Agreed! You can't say someone is a good or even decent player under very precise conditions. The greats are good all round, under various conditions. I'd probably be a decent DMF under the right coach, stable conditions and a team that plays to my strengths.
Or just look on John Stones with whom he plays in England. Stones struggled for years in Manchester City defence but he adapted to City play style and basically is a pioneer of a completely new position in football. While Maguire is so one dimensional you cannot ask him to do anything outside his comfort zone
He simply he can’t play the game of football at United level
He can’t play from the back doesn’t have good concentration not good 1v1 doesn’t have any recovery pace shocking mobility and is uncoordinated
There’s a reason he was part of the team that were conceding at record amounts for United
He probably got too much credit for the good defense in Leicester, no one gave enough credit to Robert Huth.
@@commenting4909 Huth and especially Evans we’re better CBs for Leicester
Evans was truly underrated
Very good analysis. It actually emphasises how important strong confidence is for defenders. They don't have the ball on their feet a lot so taking a scratch to your confidence can have long reaching effects.
CBs also need to be able to read the situation, and then bark clear and decisive instructions to their teammates. Lack of confidence can hurt the whole back line in many ways.
Maguire is overhated. A victim of sensationalist media and toxic Twitter culture. Genuinely hope he finds redemption away from Man Utd.
Also, is it just me or SSB sounds different here?
Maguire's main problem is that he is surrounded by people and friends who give him the worst possible advice and motivation due to which he has never been able to assume any sense of responsibility for his poor gameplay and horror mistakes. Instead, he keeps on deflecting and denying any of his mistakes which makes it impossible for him to be able to improve his gameplay and mentality. And it is only going to get worse for him with this sort of attitude regardless of the team he plays for.
Erik Ten Hag is doing a really bad job in maintaining the discipline within the squad. The criticisms from Ronaldo and Bruno are actually very warranted.
The discipline issue is letting loose at the later stage of last season, and will be a huge hurdle for Man Utd next season.
He's really not a good defender, I don't know why so many people are desperate to defend him. He has one good trait which is winning aerial duels, hence why he looks ok in a defensive system where he is very protected and his only job is to just head away balls from the box. If he has to play in any system that is more front foot he is terrible. This is due to him having a low footballing iq, bad decision making and being drawn to the ball like a cat to a lasor dot. He is also slow, immobile and clumsy. Furthermore, what makes him genuinely unlikable is his inability to accept blame or criticism, he never improves cause he never critically analyses his own game, and he frequently blames teammates for his bad performances. He's meant to be our "captain too btw", what a joke.

The way he single-handedly knocked out Manchester United against Atletico Madrid with his dreadful positioning permanently tarnished him for me.
And what about his world class performance against seviila
John's voice works really well on the illustrated channel. Joe's dulcit tones are iconic and seemed irreplaceable but John's seems to work really well too!
In his first season he was great. This video gives some understanding why his form has dipped so badly.
He's a good player, but he isn't the all around defender that his price tag warrants. He isn't set up well enough at United to take advantage of his strength, instead, he is set up in a way that will just highlight his flaws. It makes sense that he was solid at first, but as soon as teams started to figure them out more, he crumbled. For England, he has everything going for his advantage. He has been able to play in a 3 at the back under Southgate for much of the time, or he is at least always next to Stones. That partnership works well for him because Maguire doesn't have to be the guy to pass between the lines to break the midfield because Stones is much much better at that. Even the threat of Stones breaking the midfield with a pass should warrant opposition teams to have more players blocking his channels, which only gives more space for Maguire to carry the ball. Southgate is also very comfortable sitting back and playing Harry Kane hold up ball and winning set pieces which also is great for Maguire.
his price tag was inflated due to liverpool just bought van dijk for similar amount and united was desperately craving for a cb. he was never the player of that price tag, sad that it makes people keep blaming him for not performing as his price should.
Idk what team in the world would set the game around 1 centerback
Manchester United happened to him, like Pogba, Martial and now Sancho. DI Maria was lucky to find it out quickly and escape with his career intact.
Love the detail of the video puts everything into prospective , direct and to the point. looks like a trade in the summer window ummm . love the work keep it up
He'd fit in well at Sheffield United in the prem as they will be sitting deep and he would not be tasked going forward as one of their overlapping centre backs. They will also focus on scoring from set pieces.
His wages are much too high for them. He has to go to a team competing for European football
At United Maguire was bought by Ole to play a certain system, and that was counter attacking football.
A deep back line basically holding hands with the wing backs and McFred in front of the centre halfs, literally parked on the edge of the box.
Tactically, It was a back six that relied on individual moments from the attackers to win games, usually scoring from a ball that was played over the top. There was no real style of play and the football was dreadful. Most games were won by narrow margins.
Some United fans called it Ole Gunnar 'free style'. This approach kind of worked with consecutive top four finishes. But those were the Covid seasons that didn't have fans at the grounds.
However, by the time of the 2021/22 season, teams and coaches had figured United out and often played a low block themselves, which they struggled to breakdown.
Maguire was regularly exploited as being the weak point within the backline. He was repeatedly caught out of position as United were stung on the counterattack. Where as, the better teams pressured and pressed the life out of the defence that clearly had no pace or the ability to play out from the back.
Maguire was intended to be a dominant ball playing centre back that was good in the air in both boxes. Realistically, he was none of that. He lacked pace, frequently getting turned and showing strikers on to their stronger foot. Also, he seemed to struggle with low crosses. The 2020 Europa League semi-final against Sevilla and RB Leipzig away defeat in the UCL the following season are some of the many examples.
On top of that, the over-inflated transfer fee, poor coaching set up (at the time), and the idiotic decision to make him club captain after less than six months was a recipe for disaster.
You should be a football analyst
who should have been the club captain then?
@MATA FAKA In the context of that season: 2019/20, Harry Maguire was made captain after Ashley Young left in the January transfer window for Inter Milan.
In my opinion, players like De Gea or Chris Smalling had stronger claims for the captaincy. Both had been at the club since 2010 and 2011, respectively, with experience of winning league titles and other trophies. Whether they would've been any good in the role is another story.

I don't know about Maguire but Phil Jones surely had a lot of potential back in 2013
@@justhuy7960Maguire was never a crazy good young player but is still solid and lived up to his potential when playing for England.
Main problem is that each game he plays, he makes 1 or 2 severe mistakes that lead up to goal, own goal or lucky just a corner. You can't have a liability like that.
For any footballing professionals, to be regarded good enough, it is not just a case of how great your technical abilities are (although it does help), BUT it is a case of how well you adapt to changing circumstances during the game and how well you carry out the manager’s instructions without making glaring mistakes.
Unfortunately, Maguire doesn’t fulfil those requirements and get caught out on many occasions, far too often.
Cómo agradezco sus videos a este lado del charco es una fortuna. Tener contenido decente, objetivo que te habla de las razones en base a un análisis y no el discurso ridículo de la mayoría de decir "No sirve" esas diferencias de contexto marcan un devenir. Thanks for your quality content
the reason he performs well in England national team is Southgate plays with defenders with 2 defensive midfielders. He was never that good, since his move to united most pundits made their job to protect Harry at all cost
Played a good first season, he improved United then. Started off poorly after the Mykonos embarrassment, started getting trolled and never recovered his confidence. His first season, he was captain to a relatively inexperienced team (Matic being the most experienced in the dressing room?), that worked for him since he didn’t have major credentials himself & was learning on the job. In subsequent seasons, with players like Varane & Ronaldo incoming, it would have given his confidence a massive hit, he can’t lead a Varane or Ronaldo. Best for him to play elsewhere and recover his confidence, there is a player in there. Ronaldo’s incoming was too much for this dressing room to take, even Ole. Ole, just like Maguire, could only thrive with a young team.
Completely unrelated to Maguire’s situation, I really liked the Spanish dub of the video! I always watch the original voice track in every single video, but the dub here is excellent, muchas felicidades 👏🏻
This may sound controversial but I think Harry would dominate Seria A for teams like Juve, Inter and Roma where he's strength and defensive attributes are needed.
No he wouldn't. Their media actually focus on football performances and don't give a pass to those with the same passport. This tifo vlog is literally a puff piece aimed at restoring an undeserved reputation of an incredibly unlikeable, arrogant waste of oxygen who is only in such a position due to skin colour
Surprised y’all never mentioned that he never ever scans around. Plus he is very inflexible in his role…the fact that a LB took his position should be a sign of such inflexibility. Finally, he works best when a team plays counter attack football/low-block. He would do well at another club, honestly.
im ngl tottenham would be a perfect fit
He was really good at Leicester city due to guidence of Evans same as Soyuncu , Fofana
His style suits a reactive approach. Where lines are defended deep and he is covered by players around him. His passing is good. But these couple of seasons he was exposed when he needs to carry the ball and not press-resistant. Many attackers just dribble towards him as they know he cannot recover his speed in time.
He did not help himself when he gave tone-deaf interviews which cement the vitriol towards him. I personally don't believe anyone should be abused to this level. A change of environment is better for everyone
He’s not been the same since he was arrested. I think that is a huge understated matter that affected him. Case still ongoing
add to that the england squad played a back three, maguire enjoyed the presence of his other 2 center back partner to cover for his own weakness, while at manchester united he was only paired with 1 center back, hence his responsibilities are much higher and he can get overwhelmed more easily
He’s played well in a 2 loads, this is absolutely nonsense
Maguire has not been a bad player ,he has never been too bad just lacking confidence recently, but what baffles me is his lack of responsibility for his own performances ,he lacks those attributes which one should have when playing for Man Utd, nobody is perfect but lacking responsibility and hiding behind others should not be an excuse.... finally he should move on
Yip his career was destroyed by the incessant anti-English bile that the internet serves up every day. Sad
He destroyed his career by himself. He got nothing to prove,so sit at the bench for the rest of his life.
Nah - idiots like you who gas him up for being white and English do bigger damage
Low on confidence, constantly berated by his own fans (let alone rivals) and played in a system that doesn’t suit him at club level. He deserves a fresh start because in the right system and with the right support he could revitalise his career.
Respected by the opponents
Feared by he’s teammates
Harry Maguire
He is a good players it's just that he doesn't fit into united's system and de gea instead of masking his weakness inhances it
Why other defenders of United not like him. Actually, it is his problem.
He needs lower league football
Playing football at school, there was this guy who was amazing. But he knew it very well, and would absolutely slate everyone else and single people out for not being on his level or if you mis-kicked. It created a really unpleasant atmosphere and I hated playing while he was there. This guy is so reflective of what I imagined the Ronaldo and Maguire situation to be like. I just knew Ronaldo would turn up and make sly digs at Maguire, probably go as far to call it bullying him. Actually really sad.
We all know people like that when we played/if we still play.
You re not getting payed Playing football In school, but Maguire is payed in United. If I were Ronaldo, I ll kick some sense in Maguire little brain.
@@sunnyhighgaming1733You mean bully him?
There’s a difference between gentle but firm criticism & bullying.
Has there ever been a more scrutinised player ever? A top player and no doubt he will rise to the top once more
Beckham red card on simeone?
His first season at United wasn’t bad and we all wanted to give him a benefit of the doubt that if he had a quicker cb alongside him, he would be good. When we got Varane we all thought Varane would make Maguire good but that all backfired unfortunately. We gave him the benefit of the doubt for 3 seasons but unfortunately it’s time to go for Maguire, we have a excellent pair of Varane and Martinez and hopefully we can sign Kin Min Jae and Keep Lindelof
He's good, even world class.
But he's playing in the wrong position.
He should try new position.
For the example, outside the stadium.
Not funny.

All i hear are excuses for a freaking 80 million man. Van dikj was bought and he lifted matip, Arnold, gomez's game.
Ruben dias was bought and he lifted his fellow defenders game. Even stones who was on is way out eventually began to improve.
But somehow for "Caption Maguire" we keep making excuses for him.
I remember the stick linedlof and baily received for one or two mistakes. They were almost crucified.
But for slab head we find a way to make excuses for him. A freaking aging Tiago silva was bought and he turned Chelsea defense for the best.
Look at lisandro we bought, see how he lifted the game of everyone around him.
Thats the Hallmark of a great defender with great character.
This pandering and making excuses for an average defender has to stop. His continued presence in the English national team backline says alot about the incompetence of there backroom staff. A team which has tomori, ben white, stones, mings, ben mee but somehow finds a way yo justify including the fridge is just plain stupidity at this point
How much he cost was Woodward's fault, not Maguire's.
Lewis Dunk is genuinely streets ahead of maguire as a CB yet he can barely get a call up
Levi Colwill as well is very close for being good enough for England as well
racist 😂
@@RANDOMZBOSSMAN1 you actually think that? mate if lewis dunk went to a chelsea where he’s under a microscope he would be getting made a meme too rightly or wrongly that man is nowhere near as good as maguire i’ve seen him make so many mistakes for brighton but not get mentioned because obviously no one cares about brighton anywhere near as much as united
Also a reason i'd argue playing better for nation is the difference in quality with most opponents until latter stages , compared to EPL each week .
Most protected player i have ever seen.
Greece soon
What? He is the most abused and criticised player in world football history. Give it a rest
Only for England's NT
He has flaws, yes. However the absolutely malicious and constant attack upon him has been disgusting. The way social media just memes players into breakdowns is a shame on the game.
Every clown from Lagos to Jakarta who only consume football through social media believe it's the way to be a fan, and it's just not.
Great video, it shows more in depth of what went wrong and how it still is the case.. You know, apart from watching short clips of the famous "harry maguire!" with gangstas paradise 😂
He is one of the best defender i have seen ❤️
He’s just not good enough. He’s a middle table centre back and that’s it. He can’t carry the ball under pressure and he has very little awareness in defense. The media hasn’t helped but he’s just abysmal and can’t contribute to a team that wants to play from the back.
Have some perspective.. Look how he plays for England, he was also in the Leicester team that won the league..
Leicester signed him 2 seasons after they won it
Feel for him, I hope he moves on and finds his drive again that brought him to united
I don't feel for him, he earns 190k a week to do something he's not even good at.
Making your own teams GK scared is not an easy achievement. This makes him the goat.
Another great analysis by Tifo. I'd love to see a video on where Maguire could go & what managers he could work under that'd see him back to his best. Although I fear that Man Utd would hinder any return to form at another club as they would no doubt ask for stupid money for him.
Didn’t even realize it wasn’t Joe narrating until a couple minutes in and I’m like “wait, this doesn’t sound like Joe…”
Nice job John!! Look forward to the podcast next week. Next week? I have no idea when the next one is but I’m looking forward to it!
That mistake against Leicester last season was down to DDG giving him a slow pass out the back which made it difficult for him. Most of his errors are really down to DDG. Especially this season’s game against Sevilla for the first goal was also due to DDG giving him the ball in a tight situation fully knowing Maguire won’t be able to turn out of it
But Martinez got that same pass against Betis and glided of out of the press like a ballet dancer
I think its pretty simple, based on how he behaves on the pitch and how comments in the media: he thinks hes better than he actually is. And when nobody in his inner circle (including southgate) tells him otherwise like they should, his ego only grows more and more.
The animation on this video is awesome
Is it playing in Spanish for anyone?
My manager has been playing me in the wrong position.. My real position is striker for the other team
Hi, could you do a video featuring Egil «Drillo» Olsens revolutionary tactics during his periode with the norwegian national team and how it lead to beating Brazil and other opponents with individual players much much stronger on the paper?
Jon smashed this. I usually vomit in my soup upon anyone but Joe's voice, but this was great.
He became the GOAT. The amount of highlights and compilations we saw of him is insane. He is De Gea’s biggest enemy ~
He's still good, he just has balls and makes tackles. You don't win every tackle, but he is one of the few that has bravery to put himself out there and do it. Every other club's CBs are back up merchants who can pass, that's the way the game is now. Shout out to the few CBs that still live the real life.
I can't tell; is this satire?
If wrestling attackers is being brave, then yes, he's the best CB willing to put himself on the line.
You don't know much about defending if you think "having the balls to make tackles" is what makes a good cb
Are you his groupie or something?
Good CB control the opponent space, like maldini did.
In other hand gattuso run rampant lmao
Most people don't k ow this, but Maguire's first game for United was vs Chelsea. Mourinho was in the studio and even though we were winning 2 nill or something at half time, he basically predicted that Maguire would struggle.
Maguire hasn't committed many errors this season, but playing him means united have to scrap playing a high line to avoid counter attacks.. plus he is a very slow decision maker.. so often, when building from the back, Maguire dwells too much on the ball and doesn't attempt line breaking passes nearly as much as Lindelof, Varane or Martinez.. and most importantly, he is very vulnerable when pressed, added to that De Gea being equally weak under a press made us very weak in build up play..
He doesn't deserve the abuse at all.. but he just doesn't fit Ten Hag's system..
Maguire is literally the worst captain Man Utd has had in the 21st century
So what? The century is only 23 years in and we have only had a handful of captains in that time. And some of his predecessors were amongst the most successful captains in English football history. Lol
You're basically saying that Maguire isn't as good a captain as Roy Keane. So what? Nobody is. You could possibly argue Souness in the 80's
@@jhpfdijtuiweruot I'm wasn't even thinking about Keane. I was comparing to more recent ones like Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia. And I still think Maguire is worse than them
@@marcusnguginganga2829 You don't think Keane was Utd captain in the 21st century? Lol
@@jhpfdijtuiweruot When did I say that? Stop putting words in my mouth.Keane is literally the gold standard so to compare him with Maguire is literally embarrassing.
This is what happens when you overhype average players... Unfortunately for Maguire his failures as a defender cost his team much more & gets highlighted alot. Phil Jones was another one. Look at the other overhyped failures in Sancho, Wilshere, Oxelade-Chamberlain, Walcott, Bentley, Ross Barkley, Penant, Micah Richards, Loftus-Cheek, Dele Ali etc - these English players were given too much hype before they achieved anything great. So fall from grace hits harder. Mount and Rice another two, who'd join the gang very soon !!!
At least he wasn’t to blame for the 7-0 spanking at the hands of Liverpool 😂😂😂
I'm not a United fan but Harry's situation has always made me feel so damn especially seeing how hard he goes works on the national team
Take him at your club then
@@unknownname1941 He doesn't suit our playstyle so....
If I was a Roma fan then I'd totally love the move for when we need to park the bus
how hard he works? so why didn't he work on his weakness over 5 years? playing like a fridge while grabing that huge paycheck every week must have been hard for him huh
Nothing, just Maguire being himself 🥶
What happened? As if he was ever good ..
He used to be decent, if overpriced.
Now he’s a full blown meme
He was and is and will biggest chomu football have ever produced 🤖🤖🤖🤖
He was his team's player of the year for like 4 years in a row before joining united, he was a blinding player before all the abuse started
You should do a video on Oshimen and Napoli.
Really good voice over!
Ronaldo is one of the few people to call out problems no matter how potentially upsetting they may be for the betterment of the team.
He turned out to be right about Maguire too, just look at how much better United have played without him. Massive respect to him.
One of his more underrated takes is when in 2009, Ronaldo said Las Vegas could never have a successful football team due to a lack of cohesive culture. Don't believe me? Google "Ronaldo Las Vegas 2009"
Sorry but everyone knew Maguire wasn't the guy before Ronaldo joined. Ronaldo also didn't say anything new, he just harped on about things that were public knowledge for years, if you're going to give him "massive respect" it shouldn't be for this.
Lies again? Fashion Designer Retail Store
You actually believe that😂😂😂. Ronaldo does not care about this club mate. The guy just wanted to protect his image because he knew he was washed. Did you see him do the interview when he was banging in goals? No. We finished second without ronaldo and he took us to our worst finish in the premier league era and then dipped because things didn’t go his way.
Except we won almost every game he played in this season (comfortably). And when he didn't play, our defence was appalling (SEVEN to Utd, SIX to City, THREE to Arsenal. TWO to a managerless Leeds at home etc). The facts don't correlate with your feelings
Can we expect sensible transfers to return over the summer? I love those videos!
thanks for being nice to him
Loving the art style.
A ball-playing issue he has is that: when he picks up the ball, his infamous signature move is "carry the ball three steps forward, play back pass, drop deeper than where he originally was". This is a huge problem. Lindelof and Martinez are good at progressing, while Varane is initially less capable of this but now improved. Everything can be attributed to confidence but I regard this is more tactical and habitual. Defensively he qualifies as the 4th CB. In ball-playing I guess only De Gea is worse than him in the squad.
Don’t forget him pointing on the ball as he dribbles
The ultimate press trigger, him and DDG
What the... youtube has option to change sound? I was confused when I started to hear spanish. Cool effort you're doing. I guess youtube recognized my primary language and put the spanish audio.
I always love and appreciate the insight you guys give when it comes to this game. It’s been beyond beneficial. I have to be very honest though. There were areas in this episode that was utter rubbish and a bunch of excuses in relation to the earlier points.
Yes, there has been changes in managers but Maguire isn’t the only one who had to deal with the change. Those blunders persisted with each manager. Ole gave this man so much rope it’s not even funny. Lindelof still remains in the rotation with ten Hag and he’s dealt with manager changes since José. There are plenty of players on the England national team that dealt with managerial changes and that’s never been an excuse on their performance. Before the Boehly takeover, how many managers did Mount, James and Chillwell deal with and yet their game didn’t completely falter at Chelsea (excluding injury). I’m sorry, a lot of players deal with managerial changes and style changes but that’s a very weak reasoning here for Maguire.
The national team game play rhetoric is pretty old and played out. Let’s be very honest, during national team play players are playing 3-5 games during a summer tournament or international break. Maguire plays 30+ league games along with cup tournaments. That’s who he is. A slow, uncoordinated and awareness lacking CB. Dejan Lovern was decent for country but no one cared because we all knew he was a terrible CB for Liverpool at a club level. Whats asked of him on the national team level isn’t as technical on a club level. That doesn’t necessarily mean he plays better. Harry Maguire is between a below average/average CB at best with limited speed and poor positional awareness. He was never more than that regardless of manager.
Well said.
The African parliament member using harry maguire as an analogy to describe his countries dire economic situation will forever stay in my head lol
Nothing highlighted how narrow the gap is between elite athletes than watching Harry Maguire defend against the A-League All Stars last year.
An EPL standard and England National looked very average against players from a league considered much worse of a standard.
