  • Heating pads can offer pain relief when dealing with shoulder pain from an irritated rotator cuff tear.
    It can help relax stiff muscles and take tension off the rotator cuff tendon. This can set you up to sleep better and be more comfortable throughout the day.
    But it can also help you begin to exercise more effectively since you won't have stiff muscles working against you.
    In this video, Dr. David answers the question, "Is heat good for a rotator cuff tear?"

    I'm using red light therapy. It's definitely helping my knee and keeping me out of knee replacement surgery, but my rotator cuff - not so much. I injured my rotator cuff about 6 weeks ago when I was carrying my 20 pound dog. I'm also using your program and I'm about to start lifting weights next week. I'm 78. Any thoughts on red light therapy?

      Hey Jian! Tough to say! The amount if research on infrared vs regular heating pads is rather limited. They should both be fine, but whichever you prefer is the best bet.

    I had a rotator tear, perhaps 25 years ago. The pain was on and off for a least a year when I finally had the surgery that was absolutely necessary. The surgery took almost a year with physical therapy to heal. I have not had any problem nor pain since. The surgery was worth going through. Just be sure the doctor is 100% with that surgery. This may not be a job for physical therapy.

      After 2 years of pain following an injury, I had a rotator cuff surgical repair, result was great. The surgeon told me that a physical therapist will say that physical therapy will help 90% of the time but a surgeon will say that 90% of the time you will need surgery to fix it.

    • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Hey Jean and Martin! Great conversation here! There are instances where surgery should be recommended. However, the most commonly torn rotator cuff tendon is the supraspinatus. This is a very small muscle that can easily be phased out if necessary thanks to the other 3 rotator cuff muscles. Often times, the surgical repair will be done properly, but it is very easy to tear the tendon again in the early stages of recovery. Fixing the muscle imbalances that cause stress to the rotator cuff tendons are very important for long-term care of the rotator cuff, with or without surgery. Hope this helps!

      @@epmanualphysicaltherapy Thanks for that advice! I'm struggling with my other shoulder now but its not as bad as the first one, I couldn't lift my arm at all then, that was due to a traumatic injury. I'm planning to follow your great videos to strengthen and balance the muscles this time. Surgery last time meant five months off work with no earnings.

      Hi Susan, these types of injections, including hyaluronic acid injections can be helpful but they are only a temporary fix. Once the shot wears off the pain will still be there if the root cause is not addressed. In most cases, the root cause is a muscle imbalance. 🌟

      Hip bursitis has some of the same symptoms and pain issues.

    • @NanaLovesRoses
      @NanaLovesRoses Před 4 měsíci

      I had hip bursitis from falling on my hip and it was very painful at night time if I laid on my right side. After many years, I finally had a cortisone shot in that area--it seemed to have made it worse at first, but after about six months and massaging the area the bursitis completely went away.

    • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  Před 4 měsíci

      Great question Marguerite! There are many muscles in the hip that act similarly to the rotator cuff, but the glutes are the most similar. If you believe you have a tear in this region, it may be advisable to seek imaging of the muscles. This can be something like an MRI or an ultrasound.
