    My brain is exploding right now! I often hear and read stuff about what the internet is doing to us and all the negative aspects of it, but I have a whole different view... As Jason said.. "Why aren't we talking about these things?" ... and I have such a sense of gratitude because this information is somehow out there for curious people like me to access. I am no scientist, but I am an extremely curious person ... and to be able to access this information while being in another country and not belonging to the scientific community is just ... outstanding... I don't know the precise science behind this, but I can understand the concepts and get into this flow state produced by the satisfaction of understanding... Like Carl Sagan said, "I don't want to believe. I want to know" ... and I honestly believe that the answer to the problem of human existence is creativity... because one can never feel more productive than when in such state of awe. I mean, I don't know if this is only me, but learning and understanding so that I can later create something parting from that new knowledge is the only thing that can actually "cure" me from my separateness... I know I'm getting quite romantic and philosophical about this ... but how can we not? you know? --- ahhhh SO INTENSE

Some of us are exploring this for the past 2-3 decades WITHOUT the use of drugs.... We talk about it all the time...when not in the .flow.... Once you know it is possible - you CANNOT UNKNOW IT...💖🙏... Dr Joe Dispenza leads meditation classes where people achieve flow within a few days of specific meditation.... just had a clear thought - around 8:30sec, you are talking about freeing yourself of hte inner Woody Allen voice in the mind - and it helped me to work through a situation I have just gone through - wherein, I self doubt too much, or worry about with others are thinking/saying of me after a conflict - yet, I don't have the heart to "not give a fuck" like most... I build bridges through patience and sensitivity. ( Yes I walk away from the impossible ones too!) But, I build rather than burn... now, back to my point, what this conversation just helped me realize is that I don't have feel bad about giving a fuck, I can be free of the inner doubt or worry, yet I can also be at peace with myself that I DO build bridges instead of burning them, ie: not giving a fuck.
    So thankyou! In this moment, right now as I type this I actually feel better and stronger in my heart, and proud of myself for realizing my authentic self is to build bridges in conflict and yes give a huge fuck about life and how I leave it! Vs feeling awkward/sad/weak by those who judge me for giving a fuck, while they would much rather and literally say "I could give two fucks what you think" to a friend who helps them. I am not that kind of person yet have interacted with those kind too often in my work and personal life ( sorry, they have been men... ) . I suddenly feel more confident in being OK with the fact that I CARE! And I DO the WORK! And I do know when to walk away too, yet I feel better acknowledging my truest self right now, and embracing my authenticity. That which is to build in conflict and not to burn. I give a fuck, and I am ok with that! haha!! Thanks guys!
    By the way, I am runner, and I ALWAYS feel better after a run or workout.... that is my high.) Love this FLOW talk!

    Flow Hack Mentioned at 1:00:52
    In the Following Order
    1)20 min run or long walk (point is to try to quiet down the voice in your head)
    2)Drink a cup of coffee
    3)Smoke a joint.
    For a more optimal experience I would add:
    A long walk on the beach walking barefoot (the wetter you're feet get the better) usually quiets down the ego.
    If you choose to exercise either run on the beach barefoot or do the Peak 8 HIIT (high intensity interval training) protocol on any exercise bike.
    And if you're new to marijuana 2 large tokes should suffice, particularly of a strain of marijuana that provokes creativity (search leafly.com for reviews on best strains in your area)
    Thanks Jason, it's always a pleasure hearing you and Steven speak your knowledge and ideas. I would love to see you back on the Joe Rogan Podcast talking about this and perhaps have a top ufc athlete and a writer on the podcast as well to pick the brain of.
    Thanks for the video!

    Such a beautiful and eloquent discussion! But is it asking the right questions?
    Rather than searching for the flow state, we should ask ourselves how does it leave us in the first place? We are born in a flow state of mind, we see it in kids all the time. Children are curious and creative by nature, and you never see a child worrying about time. So what happens when we grow up?
    I think this organic process of dissolving these blocks of anti-flow in our brains will naturally let the flow, flow.

      +Jamil Madanat The answer is school. You can't have people getting used to living in that state so it's forced out of us as early as possible by making us start to think about time, deadlines, the past and the future, etc., so we start worrying and bam! Gone.

    A great interview. Loved it. Very thought provoking.
    They are talking about peak flow experiences. We can also have a more every day flow that includes a significant increase in performance (efficacy), loss of the critic (and procrastination), increased ability to see the big picture as well as the details, and access to creative solutions, plus background joy / sense of well-being. There is a sweet spot where attention and awareness meet, which activates this natural ability. I'm guessing the 17 triggers activate this sweet spot. If attention is in the right place you can be at home doing the dishes or 'boring' paperwork and this kicks in! And it gets easier; its a learned state. (side note: attention & awareness are different processes and recent research studies show they operate independently)

    @23:12-"Why isn't this on the front page of every thing every day?" Could be because of our attachment to the monetary system. It's a question of priority and unfortunately most people don't have the luxury to spend time relatively hypothesizing irrespective of their acknowledgement and understanding the pertinence of the issue. And these are what media outlets cater to as a result of economies of scale.

    These people are perfectly sincere about this stuff...I'm not denying that it is a promising area of research, but it seems to me that their optimism and enthusiasm are not too far from religious zeal. I rarely use the term, but "scientism" seems to apply here !

    • @LeandroArango
      @LeandroArango Před 9 lety +1

      Their optimism and enthusiasm is because of the facts that scientific research has already established and the potential for even deeper research into the matter that springs from said facts. Religion in the other hand depends solely on the process of non thinking called faith, in other words, I'll believe this or that because that's what I was brought up to believe instead of doing actual research.

    Montessori environments support "flow." She saw children doing amazing things that most people did not realize were possible, and feeling better and satisfied, rather than tired.
    What if, after taking 20 years to grow up, we did't need to spend 20 years trying to get 'over' our childhoods? What if people reached adulthood actually ready to collaboratively and creatively solve problems and meet life's challenges?

  • @nijaoa
    @nijaoa Před 9 lety +4

    Twelve minutes in, what I'm more concerned about is not how we can reproduce the elevated state, but why we "want" it so desperately. Yes, it feels great, it feels "high," we would be able to do this or that. Yet all this time we have been trying to "become" something we are not.
    The state of flow, in my opinion, is in the moment, the now. It is not constrained by time, or thoughts. It cannot be artificially created. It is everywhere. All we need is a clear, undistracted mind to perceive it. Unfortunately, most of us are driven by fear, desire, always trying to become something other than our true self. There would be no sound without silence - high and low exists at the same time, it is a representation of the whole. By forging the flow state, are we really moving forward? Or it is just a trap in another form that we fell for countless times?

    • @anks123007
      @anks123007 Před 9 lety

      nijaoa Wow Sir, you answered your Question ... Yes its everywhere and "All" we need is clear, undistracted mind to perceive it ... But Tell me this in this age of information bombardment how many hours you can recall as being in the state of clear focused mind ? ..Ask me- not more that 15 mins and 20 mins ... ABOUT your dilemma that we might be trying to become something we are not .. i would say that we all have a desire to better your self in anything we do.. If you are better at what you do - you feel happy and more confident .. this is why we "Want" it.. this is we want anything because that would probably make us more content with our self ... Specially this is not about what society wants from us but more what we want from our self... And don't we all want good for our self.. It does indeed mean becoming something we are not but because we need it... (Question: ask your 13 year old self have you not changed, have you not become something that you weren't, we do it all the time ) :)

    Question for those of you who may know a bit about the brain: nothing is "free", right? What's the energetic cost on the brain (and the body) of all the extra dopamine production? Is somebody who is constantly (very frequently) in Flow putting a lot of wear and tear on certain parts of the brain, or leaving others neglected? Are they diverting energy, nutrients etc. away from other important functions and into this repeated "high"? Does making more dopamine etc. on command have implications on what sort of fuel we require -- i.e. diet, nutrients, exercise, sleep requirements?

    • @deepakpatnaik8457
      @deepakpatnaik8457 Před 8 lety

      +aceroyplatadeluna Yes there is a "recover" phase that comes after the "flow" phase. The recover phase is unpleasant and you feel tired. You may also feel listless and demotivated. However, it is a necessary phase if you want to get back into flow after a day or two. I eat a high-protein low-carb diet, drink fluids, try to go out to a mall with friends, watch a movie, or just do something that is very passive and relaxing. I also avoid alcohol, cigarettes or stimulants in the recover phase. My recover phase after a particularly amazing period of flow usually lasts an afternoon or an evening.

    24:00 I have always been amazed by how common it is for people to have this undying trust in their perception. As a human I have always been forced to acknowledge that my perceptions are not a concrete, but seem to be largely contrived and continually changing. I also read a lot of science periodicals and research shows that a dozen people can watch an occurrence and they will all describe it differently and they are all very confident of their fabricated little beliefs. So why do so many of us think we are so very aware of the absolute nature of our world. It is so naive it seems juvenile, but it is a ubiquitous trait of otherwise intelligent adults.

      Ankur Tanwar Every exegetical tradition comes to the conclusion that the Individual Self is God, man in the microcosm, etc. Hinduism's Atman has been around since the Upanisads and it shows up in pretty much every tradition. We just backslided after the collapse of manuscript traditions after the introduction of the printing press, but cultural evolution is catching up again now, and its not gonna be stopped this time. Pico, Jung, Abhinavagupta, Jesus (rightly interpreted), every wisdom tradition, shamanism cross culturally, etc.. Our time is now.

    In regard to your work, what can you say about Pharell's song Happy that captured the emotions of so many people worldwide that put them a happy to escasy flow state.

    • @anks123007
      @anks123007 Před 9 lety

      Oscar Carter Not a expert on this and don't really understand the sarcasm (If intended) .. In my opinion what pharell's did weather consciously or unconsciously is that he choose a really upbeat tempo which is almost 30bpm faster than most elctro pop songs.. Moreover the exponential spread of positive affect (“upworthiness”) across social media is the reult of fan labor (ie., the labor of sharing and spreading) to generate capital.. Happiness just spreads faster ( Faith in humanity Restored video have more number of view than 'Distroyed' Videos).. And somehow its a good business too ;) that's why making someone feel better sure does feel better (emotionally and financially in this case of Mr. Pharell) :)

      @OscarCarter Před 9 lety

      Ankur Tanwar Hi Ankur, no sarcasm was intended my inquiry is serious and I much appreciate your response. I concur with you on the tempo and the positive message. I am not expert either however, I do think there have been many positive messages and nothing has caught hole like Happy across the world. I mean people mimicking the song and dance. I never seen anything come close. Thank you.

    Very exciting! A concern or two -
    1. Hmm- "flow expands empathy" and increases the performance of snipers. I'll work on it….
    2. African kid with a smartphone - any chance of ordering some food? Dying of starvation, can she dial 911 for help? When will the flow state and exponential world get to feeding the kids?

    • @SailorBarsoom
      @SailorBarsoom Před 8 lety

      Obviously the military's interest in flow would be how it can make their fighters harder to kill and how it can make their fighters more effective at killing. It doesn't seem that flow makes the sniper so empathetic that he refuses to pull the trigger, but then I remember something being said near the beginning about morality shutting down. It would be interesting to hear more about that.
      The African kid with the smartphone probably isn't starving, though his diet could probably be better. Such abject poverty is lower than it has been in a long, long time, perhaps ever. Unfortunately it isn't gone entirely. It soon would be if the world made it a top priority, like a global Manhattan or maybe a better example would be a global Apollo project.
