More people need to hear conversations like these!
I agree! Love Jason Silva!!
shaycarl Hey Shay :) Videos like this are very uplifting and empowering, just like all of your videos. Thank you for all that you do and for being so inspiring to so many people :)
shaycarl Shay! Your into this stuff too!? Nice! Im just starting my research on it. Love the Shaytards :)
+shaycarl Meh...I like facts more...None of this has been demonstrated...these guys are just going into a particular thought pattern that nearly everyone does.
If you read Steven Kotler's book Rise of Superman you will find some of those facts you're looking for.
My brain is exploding right now! I often hear and read stuff about what the internet is doing to us and all the negative aspects of it, but I have a whole different view... As Jason said.. "Why aren't we talking about these things?" ... and I have such a sense of gratitude because this information is somehow out there for curious people like me to access. I am no scientist, but I am an extremely curious person ... and to be able to access this information while being in another country and not belonging to the scientific community is just ... outstanding... I don't know the precise science behind this, but I can understand the concepts and get into this flow state produced by the satisfaction of understanding... Like Carl Sagan said, "I don't want to believe. I want to know" ... and I honestly believe that the answer to the problem of human existence is creativity... because one can never feel more productive than when in such state of awe. I mean, I don't know if this is only me, but learning and understanding so that I can later create something parting from that new knowledge is the only thing that can actually "cure" me from my separateness... I know I'm getting quite romantic and philosophical about this ... but how can we not? you know? --- ahhhh SO INTENSE
Have you ever heard of The Venus Project? It strives for global peace, sustainability and a saner society with saner values but it doesn't just talk about, it is working on it too. They've got plenty of videos on CZcams like Paradise Or Oblivion; The Choice Is Ours, Future By Design
WOW what you say is so amazing! Yes, indeed, it is awe, the eros of "comprehending" the universe that is you & your surroundings, that is the purpose of life...
He was referring to the human state of .FLOW......Higher state of consciousness and inspiration that allows you to fo us 100% on your idea/ project and ignore everything else... Some of us are exploring this for the past 2-3 decades WITHOUT the use of drugs.... We talk about it all the time...when not in the .flow.... Once you know it is possible - you CANNOT UNKNOW IT...💖🙏... Dr Joe Dispenza leads meditation classes where people achieve flow within a few days of specific meditation.... YES -WE ARE ALL CELESTIAL BEINGS....We just have to learn how to manifest it here on this beautiful Earth....❤️
Greatest interview i've ever watched. This interview will be referenced when the next breakthrough for the human mind is achieved.
Look at these two..human angels...sharing information that others wanted to keep to themselves. Thank you.. too many are not flowing especially on the lower end of the financially fit spectrum or the autism spectrum..we are missing links in the collective of thinking but I see light at the end of the tunnel for those that have been left out of the party... such beautiful people Jamie too... ❤️
20 minute run, a cup of coffee and a bong toke... WOW... LOL
love these guys!
just had a clear thought - around 8:30sec, you are talking about freeing yourself of hte inner Woody Allen voice in the mind - and it helped me to work through a situation I have just gone through - wherein, I self doubt too much, or worry about with others are thinking/saying of me after a conflict - yet, I don't have the heart to "not give a fuck" like most... I build bridges through patience and sensitivity. ( Yes I walk away from the impossible ones too!) But, I build rather than burn... now, back to my point, what this conversation just helped me realize is that I don't have feel bad about giving a fuck, I can be free of the inner doubt or worry, yet I can also be at peace with myself that I DO build bridges instead of burning them, ie: not giving a fuck.
So thankyou! In this moment, right now as I type this I actually feel better and stronger in my heart, and proud of myself for realizing my authentic self is to build bridges in conflict and yes give a huge fuck about life and how I leave it! Vs feeling awkward/sad/weak by those who judge me for giving a fuck, while they would much rather and literally say "I could give two fucks what you think" to a friend who helps them. I am not that kind of person yet have interacted with those kind too often in my work and personal life ( sorry, they have been men... ) . I suddenly feel more confident in being OK with the fact that I CARE! And I DO the WORK! And I do know when to walk away too, yet I feel better acknowledging my truest self right now, and embracing my authenticity. That which is to build in conflict and not to burn. I give a fuck, and I am ok with that! haha!! Thanks guys!
By the way, I am runner, and I ALWAYS feel better after a run or workout.... that is my high.) Love this FLOW talk!
I'm loving these longer talks! Keep em coming Jason!
They both have this amazing hability to keep you in the conversation every bit of it
Flow Hack Mentioned at 1:00:52
In the Following Order
1)20 min run or long walk (point is to try to quiet down the voice in your head)
2)Drink a cup of coffee
3)Smoke a joint.
For a more optimal experience I would add:
A long walk on the beach walking barefoot (the wetter you're feet get the better) usually quiets down the ego.
If you choose to exercise either run on the beach barefoot or do the Peak 8 HIIT (high intensity interval training) protocol on any exercise bike.
And if you're new to marijuana 2 large tokes should suffice, particularly of a strain of marijuana that provokes creativity (search leafly.com for reviews on best strains in your area)
Thanks Jason, it's always a pleasure hearing you and Steven speak your knowledge and ideas. I would love to see you back on the Joe Rogan Podcast talking about this and perhaps have a top ufc athlete and a writer on the podcast as well to pick the brain of.
Thanks for the video!
This was a fantastic talk! Thanks for sharing! And well done! Good job!
Simply listening to this induced a flow state in me.
I LOVE being part of this consciousness movement, at this time, in the history of humanity. Much gratitude....
Such a beautiful and eloquent discussion! But is it asking the right questions?
Rather than searching for the flow state, we should ask ourselves how does it leave us in the first place? We are born in a flow state of mind, we see it in kids all the time. Children are curious and creative by nature, and you never see a child worrying about time. So what happens when we grow up?
I think this organic process of dissolving these blocks of anti-flow in our brains will naturally let the flow, flow.
Good thought to bring to the table
+Jamil Madanat The answer is school. You can't have people getting used to living in that state so it's forced out of us as early as possible by making us start to think about time, deadlines, the past and the future, etc., so we start worrying and bam! Gone.
+Not Me Good point. I disagree with the fact that it is 'gone' though, because it is always there, it just gets clouded with all the dust we pick up in our lives. Unlearning eveything is the way to go
+Not Me I don't think it's gone, but yeah, totally agree that we kinda lose that touch when we get older. Society and the need of stability in this world is too demanding, we don't have that luxury anymore.
+Jamil Madanat yup!
Such an interesting, enlightening, and crazy discussion!
"Dean and Jerry" of 2016 in mature discussion of cognitive psychology; the world IS improving. Love it and missed Martin and Lewis; so glad that epic spirit is in reunion and so important for world peace.
Thanks for getting this on your channel. 4 steps of flow state is good stuff.
Thank you so much for this very powerful interview video this is amazing
Mind Blown!!! this is possibly one of the most discovery ever "Flow State". so many events happened that was just simply ecstatic which resulted in amazing and almost impossible outcome... Now i'm like ahhhh.. that's what happened.. freaking Awesome!
I enjoyed this very much. Thank you very much, Jason and Steven :)
I love Jason extreme enthusiasm in every video.
Wu Wei - ancient concept of ideal living: non-doing. Natural action. Wu wei is the cultivation of a mental state in which our actions are quite effortlessly in alignment with the flow of life. Too bad we had to get so far from it, but how nice for people to be exited about it again, many thousands of years later.
My #1 CZcams channel :)
38:24 I'm in awe of Jason Silva recalling awe!
Thank You sooo much dearest 💐
You’re such an inspiration 🥰
Be Blissful Eternally 🙏🏼😇
Learning to Stretch, not snap! Phew! The science of honest being! Love this!
I love this conversation... and i don't mean this based on the content of the conversation, more so on there body language and speech rate but i swear to god, they are high on something, it's fantastic.
Haha. I was just scrolling through to see if anyone commented on that, but I'm barely seeing anyone mentioning it. Jason definitely seems to be on something! I'm thinking probably Provigil (aka Modafinil) or some other narcolepsy medication.
Always there to relieve me from sadness.
Exceptional content . Thank you
Awesome interview! If you are interested in ultimate human performance and how to be your best when it matters the most, Steven Kotler is the man. He's been a guest at The Art of Charm Podcast last week. Better check that out , too!
A truly amazing talk....brain overhaul..
I've been watching your channel since the get go, and your videos truly opened my mind, hand and hand with my philosophy class. I find too often I'm longing to understand these topics on a deeper level. Perhaps you could add to the description links to books that involve the topic at hand I know there are many, but it would be greatly appreciated by many of your viewers and isn't further enabling these types of philosophical discussions a massive positive for society? even if on a small scale? Thanks for the amazing videos! keep this shit up!!
A great interview. Loved it. Very thought provoking.
They are talking about peak flow experiences. We can also have a more every day flow that includes a significant increase in performance (efficacy), loss of the critic (and procrastination), increased ability to see the big picture as well as the details, and access to creative solutions, plus background joy / sense of well-being. There is a sweet spot where attention and awareness meet, which activates this natural ability. I'm guessing the 17 triggers activate this sweet spot. If attention is in the right place you can be at home doing the dishes or 'boring' paperwork and this kicks in! And it gets easier; its a learned state. (side note: attention & awareness are different processes and recent research studies show they operate independently)
I deid @6:34'Dopamine, well. Lets back up. COCAINE"
Brandon Bullock Lol'ed soo hard at that .. I like how in the end they weren't laughing at the topic of cannabis... but it was funny to me ..
Great subject! Congrats guys!
Really thought provoking stuff. Great talk.
Excellent conversation and information. Mastering our minds is an inevitability and the next stage. Our quantum computer brains are powers of ten more powerful than anything else we've created thus far, so we have to master the mind before we can get to the next level.
One of the most ecstatic conservations I've heard..
more of these Jason!
I could watch you guys discuss flow everyday
@23:12-"Why isn't this on the front page of every thing every day?" Could be because of our attachment to the monetary system. It's a question of priority and unfortunately most people don't have the luxury to spend time relatively hypothesizing irrespective of their acknowledgement and understanding the pertinence of the issue. And these are what media outlets cater to as a result of economies of scale.
Great video!
Always great chats jason
I love when you guys make videos for me to laugh I love you guys more then cupcakes
I love it when I'm "in the flow" I play a lot of video games, and when I'm "in the flow" I don't think at all, my body just moves on it's own, and I do my best, especially when I'm playing guitar hero.
It usually happens when I'm tired.
There were a few things said, particularly at the beginning, which make it clear that it would not be a good thing if people were in flow all the time. But the value in being able to access this state at will are obvious.
These people are perfectly sincere about this stuff...I'm not denying that it is a promising area of research, but it seems to me that their optimism and enthusiasm are not too far from religious zeal. I rarely use the term, but "scientism" seems to apply here !
Their optimism and enthusiasm is because of the facts that scientific research has already established and the potential for even deeper research into the matter that springs from said facts. Religion in the other hand depends solely on the process of non thinking called faith, in other words, I'll believe this or that because that's what I was brought up to believe instead of doing actual research.
thumbs up for the pioneers of the future of the mind
I think you should change the name of this channel to "the ocean of awe" words can not describe how profound this stuff is
More please!
"Who's playing".. hahahah omg awesome i love it!
Montessori environments support "flow." She saw children doing amazing things that most people did not realize were possible, and feeling better and satisfied, rather than tired.
What if, after taking 20 years to grow up, we did't need to spend 20 years trying to get 'over' our childhoods? What if people reached adulthood actually ready to collaboratively and creatively solve problems and meet life's challenges?
Twelve minutes in, what I'm more concerned about is not how we can reproduce the elevated state, but why we "want" it so desperately. Yes, it feels great, it feels "high," we would be able to do this or that. Yet all this time we have been trying to "become" something we are not.
The state of flow, in my opinion, is in the moment, the now. It is not constrained by time, or thoughts. It cannot be artificially created. It is everywhere. All we need is a clear, undistracted mind to perceive it. Unfortunately, most of us are driven by fear, desire, always trying to become something other than our true self. There would be no sound without silence - high and low exists at the same time, it is a representation of the whole. By forging the flow state, are we really moving forward? Or it is just a trap in another form that we fell for countless times?
nijaoa Wow Sir, you answered your Question ... Yes its everywhere and "All" we need is clear, undistracted mind to perceive it ... But Tell me this in this age of information bombardment how many hours you can recall as being in the state of clear focused mind ? ..Ask me- not more that 15 mins and 20 mins ... ABOUT your dilemma that we might be trying to become something we are not .. i would say that we all have a desire to better your self in anything we do.. If you are better at what you do - you feel happy and more confident .. this is why we "Want" it.. this is we want anything because that would probably make us more content with our self ... Specially this is not about what society wants from us but more what we want from our self... And don't we all want good for our self.. It does indeed mean becoming something we are not but because we need it... (Question: ask your 13 year old self have you not changed, have you not become something that you weren't, we do it all the time ) :)
I have some of those feelings of "flowing state of mind" when i'm racing in go karts, some years ago i also play in a band, very similar thing that i felt..(but in racing is stronger)..IT'S A AWESOME TUNNEL VISION BUT ,IN PARADOX,IS A EXTREME GLOBAL VISION!!
Question for those of you who may know a bit about the brain: nothing is "free", right? What's the energetic cost on the brain (and the body) of all the extra dopamine production? Is somebody who is constantly (very frequently) in Flow putting a lot of wear and tear on certain parts of the brain, or leaving others neglected? Are they diverting energy, nutrients etc. away from other important functions and into this repeated "high"? Does making more dopamine etc. on command have implications on what sort of fuel we require -- i.e. diet, nutrients, exercise, sleep requirements?
+aceroyplatadeluna Yes there is a "recover" phase that comes after the "flow" phase. The recover phase is unpleasant and you feel tired. You may also feel listless and demotivated. However, it is a necessary phase if you want to get back into flow after a day or two. I eat a high-protein low-carb diet, drink fluids, try to go out to a mall with friends, watch a movie, or just do something that is very passive and relaxing. I also avoid alcohol, cigarettes or stimulants in the recover phase. My recover phase after a particularly amazing period of flow usually lasts an afternoon or an evening.
Jason: dispongo de una respuesta coherente para la Consciencia que no dudo te gustará conocer.
thx for this great upload
Did anyone else immediately think of the Matrix when they were discussing how they trained novice military by shutting down their prefrontal cortex? It reminds me of the scene when Neo is learning Kung-fu and such.
Top 3 best youtube channel XD
Interview Russell Brand.
+Nick Bertram LOVE & PEACE EVERYONE,SHOW IT..... BE IT...GOD BLESS YOU ALL....
So it seems we are entering a new era of human advancement at the neurological level. The idea of increasing the performance of the brain is appealing.
bet that every time Jason creates a ''shots of Awe'' video is ''high'' :)
I have figured out the rhythm & keys to achieving a controllable flow-state, just never knew til a few years back that's what it's called. I've since dedicated my life to harnessing my own state of elevated consciousness & have discovered very much & even recorded my private studies.....I just don't know how to spread what I've learned to the ones that care to know, or care to listen even. I've been sitting on it for 8 years now : (
Nice!
sounds awesome. the only thing im curious about is will there be a ''comedown'' effect sort of like the experience from MDMA,
zaah haaz yes the comedown effect or after effect or Downer would be self satisfaction, feeling content , more confidence... the downer with MDMA is probably not "Great" caz its more than brain requires to perform productively ... he says when brain releases Dramamine its in effect to the requirement of the flow ( think *perfect amount* to make decisions) hope it answers your questions
YES! YES. YES!
I believe it may have to do with the function of energy needing electrons (which I believe carries a negative charge) then the neutrons and positrons can carry out their processes
I want Jason Silva vs Noah Yuval Harari. That'd be epic!
Hello,
Great interview! Now tell me how can MOTIVATION increase while in FLOW state since motivation is related to WILL and thus PRE-FRONTAL CORTEX.
Thanks alot, have a good day!
Flow decreases resistance / procrastination. Motivated is our natural state, engaged with life.
It is all a mindset. Anything is possible.
Wow! Super interesting and radical stuff you guys are discussing... I'm about 25 minutes in where you're talking about the neurological process of information sorting/ filtering by the brain. Kotler's talking about some 400 billion bits of information coming in- first of all: WHOA. Second of all, I'm curious what qualifies a "bit"? Is that a quantifiable unit like a pixel or a voxel? Or something a little different...? Anyone have any ideas?
I have some previous bio-feedback training working with producing elongated states of Alpha/Theta training. Would eighteenths Steve or Jason comment on how this my help or hurt?
Awesome possum stuff! :]
Has anybody tried the 20 minute run - Coffee - Cannabis method? If so, how was the experience?
i wonder if this works with any workout such as lifting weights, or would it just relate to cardio ?
Yes, and It really worked! Two days in a row :D Another tool that I just found and which helped me with it is "focus@will". In combination, its been very long since the last time I worked that well for 3 straight hours!
24:00 I have always been amazed by how common it is for people to have this undying trust in their perception. As a human I have always been forced to acknowledge that my perceptions are not a concrete, but seem to be largely contrived and continually changing. I also read a lot of science periodicals and research shows that a dozen people can watch an occurrence and they will all describe it differently and they are all very confident of their fabricated little beliefs. So why do so many of us think we are so very aware of the absolute nature of our world. It is so naive it seems juvenile, but it is a ubiquitous trait of otherwise intelligent adults.
"Yeah that's called schizophrenia" IM DDEEEAAAADDD XDDD
How can I work with super interesting dialogues between Jason and Steven (as a sequel to the walking talk with Jamie). We all know that multitasking brain bandwidth is counterproductive. Can't we geo-engineer earth for 30 hours per day !!!
Yan-Erik Decorde would love to see that happen .. :D Also if we could control weather and nature of things .. psst psst *Be Gods* !!!
Ankur Tanwar What ?? Blasphemy... *just thank the Gods you live in a statistically more liberal world or you would have been flayed alive for this... like The Boltens used to flay their enemies before the Winter finally came " do you remember ? well If you don't, North surely does remembers !!!
Ankur Tanwar Every exegetical tradition comes to the conclusion that the Individual Self is God, man in the microcosm, etc. Hinduism's Atman has been around since the Upanisads and it shows up in pretty much every tradition. We just backslided after the collapse of manuscript traditions after the introduction of the printing press, but cultural evolution is catching up again now, and its not gonna be stopped this time. Pico, Jung, Abhinavagupta, Jesus (rightly interpreted), every wisdom tradition, shamanism cross culturally, etc.. Our time is now.
I can tell Steven is a completely accurate person
I think, meditation is one of the ways to consciously create the flow state.
In regard to your work, what can you say about Pharell's song Happy that captured the emotions of so many people worldwide that put them a happy to escasy flow state.
Oscar Carter Not a expert on this and don't really understand the sarcasm (If intended) .. In my opinion what pharell's did weather consciously or unconsciously is that he choose a really upbeat tempo which is almost 30bpm faster than most elctro pop songs.. Moreover the exponential spread of positive affect (“upworthiness”) across social media is the reult of fan labor (ie., the labor of sharing and spreading) to generate capital.. Happiness just spreads faster ( Faith in humanity Restored video have more number of view than 'Distroyed' Videos).. And somehow its a good business too ;) that's why making someone feel better sure does feel better (emotionally and financially in this case of Mr. Pharell) :)
Ankur Tanwar Hi Ankur, no sarcasm was intended my inquiry is serious and I much appreciate your response. I concur with you on the tempo and the positive message. I am not expert either however, I do think there have been many positive messages and nothing has caught hole like Happy across the world. I mean people mimicking the song and dance. I never seen anything come close. Thank you.
inside for the knowledge
Can anybody help me find the source of the Mckenna paraphrase about cities being congealed intention? I'm assuming it is a paraphrase. Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction!
The persons who drive the Larry always in flow.
omg.. my blond brain is on fire listen to this ❤️🎩❤️
lol, 55:45, I was thinking the same thing when I started the video
Where is jason getting "Flow in the media" from?
Life's a beach..... surf's up!
seems like you guys were in flow doing this video
"Tachypsychia is a neurological condition that alters the perception of time, usually induced by physical exertion, drug use, or a traumatic event. It is sometimes referred to by martial arts instructors and self-defense experts as the Tachy Psyche effect." google it...
super consciousness!!!!
Yes
A mind map /infograph of the video would be more than helpful.
Very exciting! A concern or two -
1. Hmm- "flow expands empathy" and increases the performance of snipers. I'll work on it….
2. African kid with a smartphone - any chance of ordering some food? Dying of starvation, can she dial 911 for help? When will the flow state and exponential world get to feeding the kids?
+Jack Saturday
Obviously the military's interest in flow would be how it can make their fighters harder to kill and how it can make their fighters more effective at killing. It doesn't seem that flow makes the sniper so empathetic that he refuses to pull the trigger, but then I remember something being said near the beginning about morality shutting down. It would be interesting to hear more about that.
The African kid with the smartphone probably isn't starving, though his diet could probably be better. Such abject poverty is lower than it has been in a long, long time, perhaps ever. Unfortunately it isn't gone entirely. It soon would be if the world made it a top priority, like a global Manhattan or maybe a better example would be a global Apollo project.
What field of science or academics or whatever is this? Philosophy? Psychology? Biology? So interesting I'd love to study/research/work with this stuff
thesofakillers The concept of flow was developed in the field of psychology, though Kotler, who has an MA in Creative Writing, is using this concept a bit more liberally than actual scientists would like.
1:00:53 Can this be created as a single edible with caffeine and THC? Something to take on your jog or hike and snack at the appropriate moment.
To all people who stumbled here or have been forcefully brought here by their friends are invited to chill with me in India. or..for a half hour trek in the himalaya and then some coffee and then a Joint of the best #ish in the world, caz I believe you all to be curious and interesting beings with whom I can talk and chill all day long.. This is some great food for thought and perception .. take care and like always "Thanks For Watching" ;) :D
I was in a car crash while watching the Matrix.. I won the mannequin challenge. xD
Holy shit
Many people have NO curiousity. That’s why!
Good lord, does Jason want to eat the mike?
20 minute run...
Cup of coffee
Joint of marijuana
😂😂😂😂😂😂
