CAN I BEAT A POKÉMON RUBY HARDCORE NUZLOCKE WITH ONLY PSYCHIC TYPES!? (Pokémon Challenge)

  • Our last Pokemon Hardcore Nuzlocke was a ton of fun, so this time I wanted to figure out if we could beat a monotype version with only Psychic types! The Monotype Hardcore Nuzlocke sounded like a really fun and challenging idea, so here's my first attempt at one!
    We've done some hard Pokemon challenges in the past, but usually they were a solo Pokemon challenge run. What if we still did a really difficult challenge... but with a full team using hardcore nuzlocke rules, and with only one type? Today we find out: can I beat a Pokemon Ruby Hardcore Nuzlocke with only Psychic types?

    Monotype Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset:
    (1) If a Pokémon faints, it must be permanently boxed or released.
    (2) Only the first type-specific Pokémon encountered in each Route/Area can be caught. Viable encounters only include Pokémon that already have that type, regardless of if they later evolve to have it.
    (3) Additional Pokémon may be caught for the purpose of HM use, but these may not be used in battle at any time during the run.
    (4) No Legendaries/Mythicals, duplicates, or same-evolution-line Pokémon can be caught or used. If a duplicate is encountered, the next unique type-specific Pokémon encounter can be caught.
    (5) No Items can be used in battle (Held Items are allowed).
    (6) Party Pokémon levels are limited to the highest level Pokémon of the next Gym Leader or Elite 4 Member. So long as your Pokémon are at or below the level cap when the Gym Leader/Elite 4 Member battle starts, they can level up mid-battle.
    (7) "Set" Battle Mode must be used at all times.
    (8) No connecting with other games for the purposes of trading/importing Pokémon, Items, etc.

    A few things I noticed that would’ve helped this run...
    -could’ve used thief on wild abra’s to get multiple twisted spoons.
    -idk if you could have enough money for this without over leveling but you maybe could’ve got the psychic TM in the game corner for kadabra to make the wattson fight smoother.
    -There are other game corner TMs that could’ve helped the mid-early game including flamethrower for solrock and an extra thunderbolt for ralts or kadabra.
    -Shadow ball would be good for Tate and Liza
    -Holding Leppa Berry on baltoy in the norman fight would’ve meant you wouldn’t have ran out of pp on dig.
    Overall you did have some great strategies though and this was a fun idea for a challenge.

      @@TheShadoek But he does do that. In his other runs, he states numerous times that depending on his luck with encounters if he gets certain pokemon first he won't be able to get another pokemon because it can ONLY be found in that specific route with other possible encounters.
      The only exception he makes is the safari zone, which is a rule many nuzlockers actually make, to allow more varying encounters. It's self-imposed ruleset, and Silph followed all of the rules he gave himself.

    • @TheShadoek
      @TheShadoek Před 2 lety +1

      @@volacticmilk9614 It's not a nuzlocke ruleset then. There's basically no aspect of randomness left if he's allowed to cherrypick the encounters on certain routes.
      Ralts I could understand as he required a psychic type to start things off, but the only failable encounter really was Abra.
      It's less of a challenge, especially with probably the easiest games in the whole franchise. Not to mention... Psychic is kinda bustef in gen 3 because all ghost types are special attackers or tanks and ghost is a physical typing so stab goes out the window, most dark types actually suck and have the same problem as dark moves are special, bug is not good and won't be until gen 5 and the only thing that actually can stand up to them with their colossal coverage is either steel... unless you taught them flamethrower which gardevoir can learn! Ot another psychic, which only Willy has.

    • @clickpause8732
      @clickpause8732 Před 2 lety +13

      @@TheShadoek Colossal coverage? It isn’t until the second or third gym that he gets a move that allows him to do non-Psychic damage. Sure he only has one truly failable encounter (well, two if you include Baltoy’s Self Destruct), but the number of Pokémon he can encounter is severely limited. Sure Psychics are good, but he’s stuck to only Psychic, with the inherited weaknesses and bad match ups that implies. As you can see in this video he had to reset six times for the first gym battle alone, and every gym battle after he rides the edge of defeat. I disagree entirely that him mono-typing makes it somehow easier.

    • @TheShadoek
      @TheShadoek Před 2 lety

    For those who want to attempt this incredibly difficult challenge, you can make a couple of battles a lot easier by teaching Shadow Ball to Medicham. Shadow Ball and all other Ghost-type moves are physical in Gen 1 to 3. You can find it inside the Mount Pyre dungeon. With that and thanks to Medicham’s Huge Power ability, you can breeze through Tate & Liza, Sidney, Glacia, and even Phoebe!
    If you train it in Attack EVs by killing 252 Poochyenas (or 128 Mightyenas) you’ll have an even more reliable Pokémon in your hands.
    Edit: Solrock also learns Flamethrower and Fire Blast for coverage. Careful against those Steel-types!

    You seem a little unfamiliar with the changes that have happened throughout the generations.
    Knock Off in Gen 3 was a very low power move and did not gain power if the opponent had an item like it does now. It was changed to its current form in Gen 6.
    Sandstorm does not boost the Special Defense of Rock types in Gen 3. That change was implemented in Gen 4.

      Unfortunately Starmie can't be found in the wild; only Staryu can, which isn't a Psychic type and would therefore be against the rules to catch. Chimecho is indeed available too, however it's on Mt. Pyre, where Meditite was, and the latter was a much better option. I just forgot to include it in the intro xD
