- "The Ghost Train" is a 1941 British film directed by Walter Forde and was based on the 1923 play of the same name written by Arnold Ridley, who much later played Private Godfrey in Dad's Army. The story is about hijinks and chills ensue when a group become stranded at an isolated station and a legendary phantom train approaches.

My late father’s favourite movie. We have watched it so many times. I remember him saying he had originally seen it at the local cinema as a boy
What a classic. I'm only in my late 20's but used to watch this with my Grandad when I was a little fellow. Never really picked up on the plot just re-watched it now after 20 years. Had a great laugh and brought back good memories! Not a bad plot too! ;) Thanks for the upload!

People tend to forget, there is such a thing as horror/ comedy. Zombieland, Hocus Pocus, Young Frankenstein are some examples. Abbott and Costello, Three Stooges, Little Rascals also tried their hands at it as well. Anyway, I love these old classics, they fit right along side of some of the old radio mystery stories as well. I find these perfect for late night enjoyment. Thanks for bringing them back.

This film is a great snap shot of folks living three generations ago. Apparently it was written as a play after the First World War and updated for the beginning of the Second. I think this explains the light heartedness and off hand humor during the much darker prospects facing England at the time. The Tea Time is classic. The commeidan/ performer recalls the great theatrical tradition of the English that appeared again in films like this.
Seriously, this piece of classic comedy needs restoring to its former sharp glory. It is truly a terror-ific film. Please... someone take the challenge on board.

The short dude was spot on with his part, I found him annoying but he fit in the story well, as an annoying personality. Can you imagine having him to deal with if you were waiting for a train in a train station and no one wants to be bothered with him, humorous

I just love Kathleen Harrison, the parrot lady Miss Bourne. She played the really great Mrs. Dilbert in the 1951 A Christmas Carol with Alistair Sim. She had 114 films to her credit. She lived to be 103 and only just passed away in 1995. I really wish I could have met her. The stories she must have had!

This horror movie deserves a remake.
It is darkly comical to see Tommy Gander putting on a show in the midst of what (in the story) is potentially dangerous. Arthur Askey's portrayal of him is superb :)
I have lost count of the number of times I've watched this movie. I love it! Re-watched it the first few times because of Kathleen Harrison, one of my absolute favorite actresses, then just got hooked on its being a "ripping good yarn." I do wish I could find a complete recording of Tommy Gander's song.
I first saw this movie on TV late one night when I was a child, it freaked me out. As I got older, I watched it online (including here/CZcams) and it has become one of my favourite movies. Arthur Askey makes me laugh everytime!

Kathleen Harrison was an amazing actress. She always played a Londoner but she came from Lancashire. The man who wrote it, Arnold Ridley, was very famous for playing the part of Private Godfrey in the comedy series Dad's Army. He played a polite and gentle but doddering old man who lived with his two equally doddering sisters. If you don't know Dad's Army it is a classic British comedy and is well worth looking up.
Sad that in real life the little guy had to have both his legs amputated due to bad circulation and ended up passing away in 1982 or 1983. Such a nice guy.

Arthur Askey, the performer, seems more interesting to me each time I watch this film. Of course the character he plays, "Tommy Gander" is beyond annoying, a real horse's arse, and one just wants to slap him upside the head. But Arthur Askey himself is some kind of comic genius. His timing is impeccable. He's fearless in his physical comedy. A terrific gift for mimicry, especially of the railway guy who tries to scare them off with his tale of Ted (H)olmes. I think anyone else who played Tommy Gander would have ruined the movie (except for Robin Williams, I agree) but Askey characterized him so brilliantly that we keep watching in spite of Gander's silliness.
Askey served in the military in WW1. He was awarded the rank of CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire), the highest rank just under that of Knight or Dame.
I've seen another of his films, forgot the title but he goes to a remote lighthouse during WWII, and he is great in that one too.
He was very well liked and respected by the British public and seems to have been a genuinely nice person.

My parents took me to see a stage version of this at the Chesterfield Civic Theatre in 1971 when I was 11 and it has haunted me ever since.
I remember this movie from when I was a kid. I always remembered the scene with the ghost singing Rock of Ages. It seemed scarier then.
I really dont understand, why they cant make films like this any more, that can keep us glued to the screen. And that acting...I just have no words...."AMAZING" would be an under-appreciation of the immense acting talent that these actors had had in them, despite of so many tech impediments and lower payouts than todays.
The new generation goes to the cinema to watch fast moving visual effect; the older generation goes for a fine story with good acting. So, what can you do! 😩😩
An hour & a half of Cary Grant or Three's Company-type acting would be too much for today's "Actors" !

Okay, Arthur Askey was probably my favorite part of this film. Just the random 1940s slapstick he does is entertaining, even without context.

Anyone who would give an Arthur Askey movie a 'Thumbs Down' just doesn't care for his brand of comedy. Well, here's something to think about (concerning this brand of comedy: Britain had been fighting Hitler for going on 2 years - and the people of England were living in a frightening time. When they had a chance to go to the cinema - they wanted something to cheer them up. Arthur Askey was loved by the people in these old War Movies. We had our same antics from Charlie Chan's sons and hist chauffeurs. Comic Relief. Dr. Watson was a bumbling old man in the Sherlock movies of this era (Nigel Bruce with Rathbone). They were made to give the war-torn survivors a bit of laughter in England. They were made to give the American's something to think about. They were ALL Excellent.
why could they stop a ghost train from a crash
I gave it a thumbs down bc it is titled as horror and it clearly isn't. If I wanted comedy perhaps I'd have enjoyed it. I hate being mislead.
Rampant Artist - It does develop into 'mild' horror (or what must have passed for horror back then) ..after about the 54 minute mark. Perhaps the uploader should have sub-titled it 'mild horror with 1940s humour'
Or dark humour, which it certainly would fall under. I don't think the uploader was intentionally misleading anyone. Not like MOST of the other intentional click-bait on here.

@Alan Godden, people were more respectful back then. I love old films, and these old fashioned mysteries are great. It films like these probably touched audiences even more than audiences today would be. This was back in an age where people were more simple and naive, and believed that little bit more in things like ghost trains and such, which added a little more excitement to viewing these types of films

This is technically a mislabelling as it was marketed as a mystery thriller but you are correct with the horror/comedy thing.
This is a story about passengers stuck overnight on a train station and the station was kept open to accommodate them. Similarly, sixty years later, on September 11, 2001, an airport was kept open to accommodate stranded passengers in real life and on a much larger scale. For some reason, the name Gander seems to take part in both stories.

Arthur Askey seems like an anathema to most people in the comments... a style of comedy that is an anachronism or old-fashioned.

This movie was my parents' generation, and I was imagining watching this in a theater in the 40s. The difference between the feelings people had leaving the theater then and now is really sad. Then people left feeling they'd been entertained. Now we leave feeling depressed and sometimes nauseated to boot. Of course I'm speaking in general here, but the notion of entertainment changed with my generation, in my opinion for the worst. I think if someone created a movie today that moved audiences the way movies did back then it would be a huge success.

Dr. Skulhamr A very similar film and to me slightly better, is the Will Hay, Matt Marriot and Graham Moffatt 1937 film called 'Oh Mr Porter'. It is full of Will Hays humour, and his stooges sometimes get a share of the laughs, but it is also dated.

Life certainly has changed, and not for the better, neither - excuse, please - neither. Those two gits wanted to chat up that good looking bird today, the other bloke would have thrown them off the train, and he wouldn't have pulled the emergency cord before ejecting them, neither - excuse, please - neither.
People didn't really behave like that back then - you have to imagine a comedy stage act performed for celluloid.
Plus they were a lot tougher back then, obnoxious men were quickly smacked down...it just wasn't filmed on a smartphone & uploaded to the internet.
This is a great film. I love me some good mystery once in a while.
The little guy was so silly and had me laughing.
Not horror as it is today, but plays on suspense. Kind of slow at times, but that's part of it. Don't try to find deep meaning, just follow the story as it develops. Little guy is irritating, but not mean. Not nice to throw his phonograph out; karma is getting chess set burned. Fast paced, karma ending. Good performances by all. I love this movie. B+

Excellent film indeed. The opening titles are in reverse as filmed from the back of a train. The signals are facing backwards. The Great Western Railway is the location of the film.
The Blitz of London had more of an effect than I thought.

Back "Then" they (the actors) had to really ACT and SELL what they where doing. Think of the old Sci Fi show Dr. Who back in the later 60's to the 80's. You could see the zipper on most of the scary monster costumes... But the actors and actresses did an amazing job of selling each scene to the point you got drawn into it.. Now THAT'S acting ability!
This was just shown in the open air here in Somerville, MA, but I missed it! Too bad. I'd have loved to find out what Yanks today think of ol' Big Hearted Arthur!
