- In the first episode back after the All-Star break, JJ Redick and Tommy Alter open up the mailbag to answer a bunch of listener questions. First, JJ address everything that occurred on ESPN’s ‘First Take’ this week and everything surrounding Doc Rivers (head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks), Patrick Beverley, and Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant. Then JJ and Tommy discuss what we can expect from the Bucks the rest of the season and what are some traits that make the best head coaches in the NBA. They also have a great discussion on who the next face of the NBA could be over the next couple years: Victor Wembenyama, Jayson Tatum, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Anthony Edwards, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, or someone else? JJ also delves into some scheme, play, and concept questions as it relates to what he sees in the NBA and also what he teaches on his kid’s basketball teams. JJ then builds a starting five of teammates he played with throughout his career, as well as a team with one player from each era to take down a team of aliens. There’s so much more great stuff in this episode as well. Thanks to everybody who sent in questions!

Loving the breakdowns! Last critique I would ask for is for the production staff to either find clips of the things described or take a little time to draw it up on a floating whiteboard type thing. All can double dip and turn those into CZcams reels for more views and in video links everything time is mentioned going forward.

The part about coaching youth and trying to get them to understand actions and concepts instead of plays was amazing. Will give their basketball iq a boost fr and so early! JJ dropping gems
4:07 Life lesson! Instead of a civilized debate, many people would rather attack the person than the substance of the argument (obviously depending on the context). It's not interesting, because we know the answer, but I think it was JJ's way of not having to outright call the person dumb/immature. You'll often learn that these individuals aren't the brightest bulb in the room or interested in the conversation or both. They're just trying to rile others up.
Eh. Partially agree. Certainly agree on first point, but I don’t think it is a matter of intelligence but rather a matter of character. Case in point, Doc here. He is clearly a man with many connections, so I think people refuse to discuss his weaknesses.

That's a fantastic point about coaches having to manage a lot more relationships than just the ones with the players (which is tough enough)

I love listening and watching J.J. I think he's right when he says people don't want to learn about the game truly, and I feel that's a huge thing we lost with Kobe as well. His "Detail" series was truly giving all basketball lovers the feel of breaking down film and studying. It wasn't a topic of debate, he just told you what was going on, and from a basketball mind what he would be thinking or doing. J.J is great because you can hear people say "they're jacking too many 3's" and he'll give you the numbers about how that team is the best in 3pt efficiency. He isn't spewing opinions all the time (which is not a problem) but he brings the facts.
What makes a great coach segment I literally thought Coach Spo. The way he’s able to maximize a team/player drafted or undrafted
Want to see Chauncey Billups on here. That's a perfect guest because they can talk about everything from being a role player, to a superstar, to a champion, to a rookie coach of a tanking team, as well as the coach of a team that wanted to contend all in a few seasons. It is a lot to really go through and talk about if you are interested in a player's experience.

Great way to describe the action and concept thing with the plays, to his kids team is.. when there’s no play called - every other team members job not on the rock, is to show the start of many possible moves for the ball handler to choose - what ever route that carrier goes down - everyone else can see and fall into line for… that it JJ?

The long off-season for the NFL gets ridiculous with the takes without games to watch! It's been less than a month and people are trying to trade players that have not requested a trade, are under un-tradeable contacts. (Stefan Diggs is staying in Buffalo, for example) Sports media gets interesting during breaks or in the off-season. A bunch of speculation about things that are very unlikely to happen. It's interesting. Glad we're back to actual basketball games

The beginning segment about coaching is spot on especially regarding Doc. Doc goes around slandering his players in post game interviews and telling media he was confused why they fired Griffin. Who cares? Coach us to victory, stop worrying about the past and the excuses. This is literally the LAST thing we need in a coach. We need Doc to bring us together and stop worrying about all of the outside noise. The Bucks need to STOP going on podcasts and in front of mics for the rest of the season, it’s getting absolutely f*cking ridiculous.

JJ has nothing to apologize for with the Doc comment. Doc has had a long history of throwing teams and players he coached under the bus. Utterly Despicable for a manager/leader of men to be talking and diminishing teams he had something to do with. I'm like - with your coaching record you better watch what you say, hold yourself accountable and just be grateful you still get coaching jobs when other coaches more deserving than you never got a 2nd, 3rd, 4th chance.

I can't help but think, if we get rid of the 3 second rule we'd improve paint defense and force teams to just take even more threes then they're doing already. And I don't really think the NBA needs more threes. Getting rid of the three second wouldn't lead to more midranges shots.

There's only one ball, and Kobe can do *most* of what MJ can do. Scottie is used to playing second fiddle and makes the team just flow a bit better.
50:38 I always find it pretty peculiar that whenever people talk about the Bulls, they always ignore the most obvious elephant in the room, which is the injured STARTING POINT GUARD Lonzo Ball! It's like everyone forgets that he's on the team and suffered from some freak leg injury that sidelined him all this time. Zo should be ready to go at the start of next season, so it's obvious that AKME is waiting for Lonzo to come back so they can give this iteration of the Bulls one more shot. Last time we saw Zo, Bulls were #1 in the East and super fun to watch after 38 games. Hopefully when Zo comes back, the Bulls will return to form, but we'll see.......... #SeeRed

I disagree regarding changes in relationships and with conflict. Players come into the league at an earlier age with a lifetime of experience on social media believing they are destined for glory. They've excelled wherever they've played and expect their skills will be appreciated. They likely have relied on superior physical capabilities and have not developed fundamental skills or understanding of the game. And social media is ALWAYS thrilled to entertain their complaints. And so the drama begins. That didn't exist with the Bulls in the nineties. It didn't exist with Kobe's Lakers and was only beginning with the Spurs.
