    I will say personally, I really like the long format rambling hangout videos so don't shorten them on our behalf because I suspect I am not alone.

    The thing about the podcast that I truly enjoyed the most is it really feels like two incredibly close friends who just record their bi-weekly in person hang out. I like that it's long-winded, I like that it is it based in the things that you both connect over and the things that you are interested in, and I like that it just feels genuine. It doesn't feel like something to reward the algorithm as much as it feels like something you do for yourselves and each other.
    I think as long as you honor that, as long as you both want to honor it, that's what matters. The authenticity of your bond. 🤷‍♂️

    Hey guys! Just a quick "silent majority" comment here, but I am one of those people who definitely go back thru a YT channel's backlog after I discover a new channel! I did that with both of your individual channels, with TUB, and with other channels I've discovered thru you guys!

    Scott, you're one of the reasons I'm even in this hobby. You and Jon were so foundational in my interests. Get back to making the videos you enjoy, and I'm sure you'll find your groove again. I think I noticed things start to slide after the GW incident. Worried that took some wind out of your sails. But you rock, and I look forward to watching and supporting you.

    As a mini painting "Chip", I find Scott's recent mini segments at the white board explaining painting theory to be some of my favorite bits of his videos.
    Not sure if that's the kind of segment he LIKES to make, but if it is, I'd like to see more!

  • @ObsidianCrane
    @ObsidianCrane Před rokem +8

    "Show a critique" was the thing I immediately thought of for a new segment.
    As to what to remove, it so varies from episode to episode - some episodes I'd kill the pre-amble and others the main topic. However, after a bit of thought its more the "news" segment. The news dates quickly (sometimes being irrelevant by the time the episode goes live) and generally lacks the value - and the best bits of it could just as easily be in the pre-amble anyway.

    More guest segments would be great. I would love to hear from TOs, store owners, independent game creators, etc. Also, could you go weekly, but have one TUP be remote to cut down on travel time. Main reason I listen is your personalities and take a general pulse on the overall community.

    Future of tup from my perspective: I mostly listen when painting or hobbying in general and love the longer form to keep me in the hobby space. I feel like if it is shorter I would find something longer to listen too to keep my hobby juices flowing.

  • @VentiChristopher
    @VentiChristopher Před rokem +23

    Let me preface this by saying this is a great video and I really love your content. Regarding your comment about how video game related content does not do well - I got into this hobby because video games stopped being fun for me. Miniature painting and tabletop war gaming have been a huge boost to my mental health, where video games had a powerful negative effect on me. So while I still watch the videos related to video game miniature painting for the painting side of it (Miniac’s recent video he did), I really tune out when the video game content comes to the forefront of the video. For example, there was about 30 minutes of WOW conversation in this video that I just straight up skipped through because WOW grates on my nerves like nails on a chalkboard. If there are others like me in your fanbase, that may have more to do with issues you are having than the algorithm. Have a good day!

    • @syd4890
      @syd4890 Před rokem +2

      Agreed! I cant click with content based on video games (becoming old sucks I guess). I ploughed through out of excitement for Scott's content

  • @pa_gaming_dad2810
    @pa_gaming_dad2810 Před rokem +2

    For me, I really prefer your longer content so if I am painting (or at work) I am not having to stop what I am doing to find another video. So I wouldn't be a huge fan of weekly TUP if it would be shorter sessions.
    Maybe rotating segments, while I enjoy the news segment if it was every other show I would be okay with that. I do hope to see more interviews, those are some of my favorite sessions.
    I appreciate you wanting to grow the channel and what to hear what your audience is interested in. Your love for the hobby comes through, and don't ever lose that honesty.

    Hearing you guys talk about life and work reminds me of a conversation I had while at university. I'm and architect and we had practicing architects come speak all the time.
    I was chatting with one of them. He had really nice work, had been running his own practice and seemed to have it all. I was chatting with him after his talk and somehow we got onto if he had any regrets from his career. He said something along the lines of
    "I don't think I was a very good father, I think I'm being a better grandfather though"
    That comment is one of the things that stuck with me most from my entire time at university.

    You could split the episode into one week as the main topic focused, and another focused on painting techniques. Example format:
    Week 1
    -Painting preamble ramble
    -What we painted
    -Patron model critique
    -News on model by pro painter that was significant to you, possibly related to a technique in the Patron mini.
    Week 2
    -Preamble ramble on mini community
    - main topic
    -News in mini community
    Episodes will be a bit shorter, but each episode is distinct enough that people can pick their jam or watch both.

Your planning, reflecting, and chatting about being a good partner and parent is so important for every one of us, content creator or not, and I'm a supporter of you and the show precisely because you're not "playing roles" but just honestly talk about things that are important and under-discussed .

    Hey fellas. Some thoughts on the week to week structure. I think the mini weekly episodes would go over well for me specifically. I usually listen to you guys while driving so when i get to where im going and then come back to the video, ive lost the thread of conversation and usually tune out. If they're more condensed youd probably have me for the whole run time.
    Alternatively, i know your studio is up by Scott but what if every other week Scott came down to you and you did a casual vlog style episode of the podcast. Could just be going to the local game store getting "laymans" opinions on things or what have you. Wouldnt need the production value of some of those travel vlog videos that scott has done in the past, but it would help split the travel load and would get TUP like content out weekly.

    Scott, dude! I LOVE the passion about your Miniac channel! I actually think Jon was being nice about your “hiccup”… I thought you were getting away from it and transitioning to a different direction. That being said, I partially (hopefully) chalked it up to how much you had on your plate. I am SO thankful to see your passion about the channel and can’t wait to see you getting after it again! On the topic of employees, I’m with Jon, too many will take away from the quality product I fell in love with years ago.
    Jon, love your perspective and the fact you’re happy doing what you’re doing because I love it!
    For TUP, if you guys split it to make weekly shorter videos…if it’s two separate subjects, cool! While I enjoy the preamble ramble, if that was shorter, you guys would have quality time for “the main topic.”
    Bottom line…I appreciate what you guys give to the community, enjoy all your channels and look forward to learning more about the hobby I enjoy while being entertained by amazing personalities. THANK YOU!

    Some ideas:
    Split Tup but have 1 recorded and 1 YT live? So, Tup live becomes a regular thing.
    Would try dropping main topic, as it can be polarising. Some hut with some, others don't.
    Thinking maybe record short interviews with industry peeps? Introduce and just play them.
    Would love to also see:
    Sculpt reviews. What's the hotness? Hard to paint? Etc.
    Like the critique for someone for everyone.

    I appreciate you guys and I love your videos. I try to listen to a TUP when I can but the length of it does make it hard to get through a full episode. There are just so many things competing for vanishingly fewer (child free) leisure hours. So sometimes, knowing I might not get through the whole thing I don't click because I don't want to hurt the metrics.
    I am sometimes able to listen while I work but not always. That leaves driving and the evenings while mini painting or other hobbying.
    Personally, I think TUP would benefit from having a tighter run time and leaner segments. I also really enjoy mini critiques as the feedback provided helps me think about my own hobbying. Enjoy the character, humor, and flavor you both bring. Especially love the guest episodes. But yeah, 2 hours is a long time.
    But that's just my view.

    Things That have always stood out about your channels are the creative editing in Scotts videos, even from very early on the creativity of the edits was something that stood out to me, it made the videos entertaining and inspiring, also the extent to which Scott focuses on understanding his equiptment and breaking down the things he's learned in a way that is easily understood is very impressive, I always try to put links to his videos when people ask me about stuff in comments on my stuff because he's covered so much stuff so well. Jon is a natural storyteller and has a charisma to the way he speaks and scripts his videos, personally I like when he alludes to childhood nerdy shit cause we are a similar age and so it's often geeky shit that I remember fondly and the lack of diverse entertaintment for our generation as youngsters has created a whole generation of people who remember the same stuff because it was all there was at the time. I'm not sure what context it will work but, for tup I wanna see you spin a wheel, no idea what for or how it will function but there it is...a wheel to be spun is my feedback, do with it what you will.

  • @thum-nales
    @thum-nales Před rokem +4

    I really liked the Apex video.
    I'm familiar with the game, and the character, since my kids have played the game (and character) quite a bit. But I can't say I have interest enough in either the game, or the character, to "want to do that".
    Maybe that is part of drop in views? Maybe, even if someone is never actually going to do it themselves, as long as they don't come up with something that affirms their "never gonna do it" tendency then maybe those folks will pay attention and watch longer.
    The basing on that model is the star to me. The character is great, sculpted and painted really well, but the thing that kept me watching was actually the "how did he do that basing?" So ... I don't know ... maybe sneak the reality of the character into it. Like, even though it is obviously Bangalore, and obviously the focus of the model, and painted really well, maybe don't even bother calling it out right away.
    The folks that are like, "hey, that's totally Bangalore, isn't it?", might keep watching trying to figure out why you aren't stating the obvious (and getting their keyboarding fingers ready to point it out themselves since many like everyone to know they were right about something) and the other folks that have no idea, or don't care, keep watching to figure out the basing (or painting) parts that "they might do themselves".
    Then, as the video keeps on playing, tease more and more the obvious (to some) via inside jokes about the character that only the geeks will know until sponsor time around half to 3/4 of the video is through. By then, those unaware and uninterested in the character, are already invested for other reasons (how to paint, how to base, etc.) and those that totally caught the inside angle are orgasmically vindicated (and kept watching long enough to find out). Then, in those waning moments you can cover your connection to the character, the game skin you love, etc.
    Or don't.
    I probably have no idea what I'm talking about.
    But, I am aware of having to push through my disinterest in learning how to paint Bangalore and click on that video ... because I have never painted a video game character and don't really have any interest in learning how to do that.
    I love painting though, and have watched your videos, for years, to get better at mini painting.
    So, on that basis alone I pushed through my disinterest in the supposed subject matter and watched the video (even "liked" it). It was well worth the watching.

    Second favorite part: when my hobby role models make fun of me/ their viewers lol. Lol every time it happens
    Least favorite: main topic (don’t remove it, but maybe it is just another equal part of the podcast instead of a full hour?)
    I’m not a Patrion supporter (sorry) but I’d be happy to hear a mini critique as part of main episode (maybe tease me with one or two a month?).
    I am happy with a 2 hour episode but would be equally happy with weekly one hour episodes.

    This episode alone is 2 hours worth of good stuff. If you want to grow, splice that up and post on other social sites. It's not about changing what you got it's about reframing it for other platforms. Using what you already got, you have near infinite shortform content.

  • @76kmorgan
    @76kmorgan Před rokem

    I think including your audience more in your episodes would allow you to tap into a deep well of content you won't even have to think about much. So if you asked your patrons to submit comments, questions and concerns on discord or wherever and you were to read those out and discuss them on each episode, that can make for some hilarious and interesting content whilst including your fans. So the start of the episode you can have some preamble ramble questions (not related to mini painting) and then maybe 2 or 3 questions related to mini painting later in the episode. It would get people excited to think they are actually being interacted with and can help the community discuss more topics with each other. As much as we love hearing about you two eating tendies and taking dumps, I also would like to hear what the fans of the podcast are up to. It will also incentivise patreon subscriptions if people will think they will get their stuff read on the podcast.
    I've managed to work through the backlog over the last year and now I've literally just caught up. Cheers for the great content over the last year 🔥

    Love your guys channels and this podcast - only properly got back into painting minis again last year and your channels were very helpful to build up some skills (but I'm definitely one of those who probably spent too much time going through your backlog of vids when I should be painting, or listening to your podcast while sat at my desk at work).
    Personally i like the format but obviously more episodes would be cool... Would be hilarious to have a 'live from Canes' one off segment and just log on to the WiFi there or whatever and just have a post-ramble ramble over some tendies for lunch

    I don't necessarily want a weekly Tup episode if it's going to be split but I definitely understand it will probably get you more views which makes it more worth it for you guys. And/or means you'll be able to hire more people but I'm just afraid it will turn into a job for you guys and one of the things I think k is cool is that you guys have fun doing it. And it shows. So, whatever happens I'll enjoy the show either way. 😊

    Scott, Love the drive to build more. I suggest looking for a virtual assistant. Don’t wait until you can afford full time, find someone who could take on part of that in stages. Especially more administrative stuff.

    I personally like the long form that you all have now. It makes it feel more like a genuine hang out when you can just ramble freely without the constraints of time management. But selfishly I would also like to have more. What about in between weeks a virtual podcast focused on viewers topics like a super chat conversation with your viewers? It could be more condensed than the normal show but also engage more with your audience and drive participation in your Patrons? Idk just a thought.

    Future of TUP:
    1. You should do whatever you guys have to do to ensure they keep happening. The worst outcome would be if you get burnt out and don't do it anymore.
    2. Taster critiques is a great idea.
    3. I love the rambling, pre or otherwise, and that is part of the charm of TUP - so don't take this the wrong way, but sometimes the episode can be a bit light on painting. I realise that sometimes you havn't spent much time painting since the last episode, which is totally understandable, but in that case, other business/youtube/etc. chat is also interesting to me.
    4. Every other week is my preference but I understand if you think it will help with the youtube algorithms.

    Enjoyable episode this week! Have you all considered “joining forces” for your regular channels and not necessarily consolidating into a single channel, but instead becoming a consortium of mini painting media, leverage the same backend services, etc.? Perhaps I’m suggesting something that has already been evaluated and dismissed, but you have good chemistry and would be a good duo outside of TUP.

    Favorite part is the preamble ramble, like hearing the random stories. Don't have a leave favorite part. Give me all the tup. Kind of indifferent to the weekly or biweekly, I like the long run times of the biweekly.

    Definitely do what you think is best for yourselves, but I think.its easier to.habe longer episodes every other week. I think it gives you longer to get into yall's discussion and flow. And from my perspective I like longer form videos, the feed moves so fast its easy to miss most videos from channels that post a lot, but a single long form every other week, even if I don't catch it immediately, is easier to find time to throw in and listen when I can to catch everything

  • @johnattemptsstuff5206

    Jon isn't focused on how to generate revenue of growing his business, but rather developing the operation to be more efficient. He's perhaps thinking this way because he's a one man operation. Very successful entrepreneurs & big businesses aren't so focused on development, but instead place more importance on growth. Think you guys need a different perspective. I know Scott has mentioned he has a business coach, so I'm curious what that person has been teaching or providing insights on.
    Definitely if you have a project that is sucking up a lot of time and money then it makes it real tough to expand into new things. Definitely know what that's like. What can help is having a vision of the goal. Whether that be a specific subscriber count, or a gross revenue target or other tangible improvement and then set a rough timeline for when you should/want to achieve that goal. That goal should be big, like, 700k subscribers in 3 years, but not ridiculous. No idea if that example is at all realistic. Then work backwards to determine what you need to do to make that happen without compromising your lifestyle, health (mental & physical) and monetary needs/wants.
    Just two cents from one business owner to another.

    For feedback about replacing segments of your show. I personaly do not like the preamble ramble, i always skipp it. That dos not mean that it is not interresting, but its not for me. I would suggest to make seperate ramble episodes, and miniature focused episodes, so that each episode would get their respective audiance. i think thats better for the algorythm, then people skipping parts of the video or switching off.

But maybe you do can do a monthly in-person with lots of in-person goodies, and the rest is just a few hours split into several. (Or not) videos that you can record from home. Or, even better, make this the main channel ❤❤❤

    If you get the chance to watch "On Patrol Live" or "Live PD", they follow several police departments in Florida and its always entertaining to see how many people go outside and walk their dogs at night who get attacked by alligators. The majority of these attacks are against the New Yorkers who just moved down here. Its usually once a month. Oh and you'll also see Florida Man when they arrest someone for Meth.

    John, you are so right about steak. If you buy quality meat yourself, you can do it as well as most places with a bit of practice. (Use the money you save to invest in a better quality wine to go with your steak.) Unless the restaurant also goes through a special procedure to age their steaks, when it might be worthwhile going (but it will be expensive).

    Your audience is small in the first place.
    For two YT channels that are so hobby-focused, I am surprised that the accompanying podcast doesn't have a segment to talk about listener-submitted hobby projects. Not to critique them but to celebrate clever or inspiring things that other folks have done with their hobby.
