  • The Corcovado Rack Railway (Portuguese: Trem do Corcovado) is a mountain rack railway in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from Cosme Velho to the summit of Corcovado at an elevation of 710 m (2,329 ft). The summit is famous for its giant statue of Christ the Redeemer and for its views over the city and beaches. ~Wikipedia

    I like how the trains on this route are basically electric versions of the Pikes Peak trains

    'Έχουμε και εμείς "οδοντωτό" σιδηρόδρομο στην Πελοπόννησο στη διαδρομή Διακοφτό - Καλάβρυτα, σε μήκος 22km. Η γραμμή έχει πλάτος 75 cm πλάτος και είναι ο στενότερος οδοντωτός στον κόσμο. Αν και υπάρχουν σχέδια για την ηλεκτροκίνηση της γραμμής από τη δεκαετία του 1950 εντούτοις και οι νέοι υπερσύγχρονοι συρμοί Bombardier παραγγέλθηκαν ντιζελοκίνητοι! Μπορεί κάποιος από τους θεατές του καναλιού αυτού να προσθέσει "μυαλό" στους υπεύθυνους των μεταφορών και σιδηροδρόμων στην Ελλάδα;

    Why are there two pantographs and two overhead lines like a trolleybus? Do the rails not carry power?

      It's 2 wire 3 phase -- the rails do carry current, but they are 1 of 3 conductors. This is a very uncommon system now, but used to be very common in northern Italy from the early 1900s into the mid 20th Century, finally disappearing from Italy in the early 1970s in favor of 3000 V DC with a single overhead wire and the rails for the return current. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-phase_AC_railway_electrification -- four lines remain in the world that use such a system, and this is one of them.

    I wouldn't want to be sticking my camera arm (let alone my head) out the window while looking backwards when things are that close to the side of the train (about 2/3 of the way through).
