Strengthening Family Bonds Through Watches

  • In 2017 Audemars Piguet released the 40th anniversary edition of the Ladies Royal Oak, This released was adorned with a fascinating new feature, something that would collectively be known as the frosted finish. The watch was a result of a collaboration between AP and florentine jeweler Carolina Bucci. Bucci spent years mastering the technique which involves using a diamond tipped tool to hammer micro indentations into metal to give it a shimmering finish. Over the next couple of years AP increased its use and the frosted finish became available on different families as well as various larger Royal Oak models and their Chronograph variants. Perhaps the most striking use of the frosted finish is when it is paired with an openworked or skeletonized dial. And that is what I’ve tried to embody here.
This watch has a great story behind it. Erik, the commissioner of this build, had me build a John Mayer Daytona homage earlier in the year. It felt like everything that could have gone wrong on that build did. I was sure Erik would never want to work with me again. Which is why I was surprised when he reached out to chat about watches in March and before I knew it we were talking about another build. The build gradually morphed from a rose gold Royal Oak homage to two matching frosted skeleton Royal Oak homages for his brother in law and himself. He mentioned that though they were very different people the one thing they could bond over was their love for watches. After hearing that I was even more excited to start on these builds as not only are they extremely unique pieces but they have a great deal of meaning behind them.
This build is powered by the Seiko NH72 which is a three handed no date skeletonized movement in a gunmetal finish. Accompanying the skeletonized dial is a rose gold skeletonized rotor. In order to show off the intricacies of the movement this build uses a clear dial with the only obstruction being an outer ring to hold the rose gold markers in place. The combination of the clear dial, skeletonized movement, and rotor not only allows the wearing to see the internal mechanisms of the watch at work but he or she is also able to see right through the watch at certain points. After admiring the watch for a bit the user may want to actually be able to tell what time it is, to help with that I've used a set of Royal Oak style hands this time featuring the correct seconds hand with the open counterweight. All of this is cased up in a Royal Oak style case and bracelet bearing a frosted finish. The micro indentations sparkle in various light giving an almost diamond dust like appearance. This watch along with its twin combined some truly unique parts into two unique watches. It was a great time putting these together and I'm very happy with the way they came out. These builds are even more special just based on the fact that they have a special meaning behind them. I hope you enjoy.
