Dilating faster: What they don’t tell you! The best kept secret why labor does not start or progress

  • Did you know that there is one thing which can shut down your labor or prevent it from starting in the first place?
In this video, Nathalie Kaufmann, Pregnancy and Birth Consultant and TCM Therapist, and Mathias Ritter, Researcher and Science Geek, discuss this factor and explain why it can prevent you from dilating faster.
First, they discuss an example from the animal world. To be precise, they discuss a situation when contractions stop in a mammal after they started. Then they explain why the same mechanism also works in humans and why it can cause the body to shut down labor or to prevent labor from starting in the first place.
Next, they explain why this factor is the first thing to take care of before you try anything else to dilate faster.
And finally, they also explain what you should do BEFORE trying anything to get labor started or to intensify your contractions.
    ------------
We invite you to watch our free mini birthing course, in which we teach you how (not) to breathe during labor. In fact, we show you with the help of a measurement device, how “good” and “bad” breathing techniques affect your body and labor. This is also particularly relevant for you, if you are going to have an epidural!

      @@arajveer6249 Hi there,
fundal anterior refers to the position of the placenta. It means that it is located at the top of the uterus towards the front (i.e. on the side of your belly). So, no problem there!
As for the grade 3 placenta: please note that it is totally normal for a placenta to "mature" over the course of a pregnancy. So grade 3 at 39 weeks is normally not a problem UNLESS your placenta is no longer able to nurture your baby (and to provide your baby with oxygen) - which ,however, one would not expect from a grade 3 placenta....
This is something that, unfortunately, we cannot tell you. Only your doctor can do that.
We can only tell you in general that a grade 3 placenta at 39 weeks is normally not a reason to worry...
We still hope this helps! 😊
We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby!! ❤

I started watching you at 37 weeks pregnant. I had went into labor, got to 3cm dilated and everything stopped. I was stuck at 3cm for 2 weeks. 39 weeks and 1 day (October 30th), I went into labor again. It lasted an hour and a half, most of which was spent at home second guessing if I was in labor or not. I gave birth within 40 minutes of being at the hospital. My son came out in 2 pushes. One for his head and the other for the rest. I am so grateful for your videos. This was my first natural birth (no epidural, not by choice but no time for one) and I feel positive that if I hadn't followed your recommendations, it would have been so much harder. Thank you.

Yes! I intuitively knew I wasn’t going to go into labor because I had so much anxiety weeks leading up to my due date. I couldn’t sleep and I would cry thinking about birth. My doctor swept my membranes on my due date and contractions started shortly after but I still was carrying so much fear. Even my bf was nervous since it was our first time. Two days later I finally decided to let go of the fear and I told myself that I was ready. I ended up giving birth the next day and my labor/delivery only lasted a few hours! Letting go of my fears and expectations was the best thing I did. We’re now enjoying life with our 5 week old! 🥰

    Dear Nathalie and Mathias,
I would like to thank you both for all your videos and tips that helped me naturally deliver my first baby - a healthy baby girl on the 7th of September(my due date was the 9th). Her Apgar score is 10. I followed many of your videos and many techniques, and I would like to share a bit of my birth story. My water broke at 5:30am on the 6th of September. I had no contractions till about 4pm on the same day. I spent the time sitting on my birth ball and moving around the house. Around 10pm I went to the hospital, with 3cm dialation. I was planning an epidural, but by the time I went to the birth ward and the anestesiologyst was called in, I was already at 9cm - it happened very very fast - I had my baby in my arms by 12.14am on the 7th. I am not gonna lie - it was painful, but in the end I am very happy it all happened naturally, and I can't help but think that all your tips and tricks contributed to the super fast delivery of the baby(appr. 3 hours of strong contractions, followed by 7mins of "pushing", even tho she was basically coming out by herself, I was at no point asked to push, as she was coming out very fast). I did end up with 2nd level tear, but it is not as scary as I thought it would be - I was able to walk and sit by the following day, and now, a week after, I am back to normal self. Few of the things I learned from you and I put in practice are - the use of the birthing ball(can't vote this up enough, I think that was the biggest factor for my fast delivery - I did those excercises for a couple of weeks before I went in labor); eating dates to soften the servix; doing perineal massage from week 37; relaxation and being mindful of my feelings(and many other good tips)
Many thanks again, keep up the great work that you do - I will now start watching your videos focusing on the after birth experiences. ♥

      what a wonderful feedback!! 😘😘
First of all: CONGRATULATIONS from the 2 of us!!! 🥳🥳🥳 We are so happy that both you and your baby girl are doing well!!
And of course, we are really very very happy to hear that our videos helped you with a fast and smooth delivery!! 😍 It makes us so proud to read such a great feedback and we are extremely grateful that you took the time to share your case with us in such detail! We know that time is particularly precious when you have a newborn at home! So, thank you SO MUCH! 😍
We are sorry though that you had a second degree tear! Unfortunately, it happens very often when a baby comes out really fast. In such cases, it is very hard for the midwife to do anything about it.
Normally, your midwife has to guide you in that stage of labor right when the baby "crowns" (i.e. when baby's head appears at the "exit"). Then she has to support the process with her hands and apply counterpressure to help avoid tearing.
When she does not or when the baby comes out very fast, tearing is very likely - no matter if you did a perineal massage or not... However, we are happy to hear that you are okay!
Again, we want to thank you for your detailed feedback! It is really very much appreciated! 😊
We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️ Enjoy every second with that sweet little thing!

Hello you both! Today I'm writing this note for thanking you both, I had my baby girl born on 9th of october 2022 with a normal vaginal delivery without any cut. Before that I had my son with C-section due to large weight by birth. But this time i followed your videos from week 32, I followed many of your tips, including acupressure, sleeping position, position during labour, diet plan and many other things and most importantly that during stronger contractions when it was getting hard to bear pain while lying on the bed I took those pains in the position you mentioned. All these things helped me a lot. Thank you so much. I wish I could hv followed you in my last delivery as well as you hv mentioned that we need to change our position while in labor that will help baby's head to enter into pelvis three bones easily, that would have helped me for a normal delivery last time as well. But no worries thank you so much for your efforts you are making for everyone to hv a natural delivery. Thank you again from my husband side as well. Now looking for your new videos for best new born baby handling.

It is always a pleasure to watch u both and also its wonderful how u reply to each and every comment. God bless u both. I am 37 weeks pregnant now. first of all, thank you SO MUCH for your very lovely feedback!! 😊 It is really incredibly nice of you to share these words with us here on our channel! We are very happy to hear that you find our content helpful!! 😊😘
      Regarding your question:
It really makes us incredibly sad, when in 2022 a doctor tries to convince a pregnant woman to have a C-section just because she is older than 35. In our personal opinion, these are the kinds of doctors who are not in the game because they want to help but because they want to earn good money.
We wholeheartedly recommend that you see another doctor because we can assure you that there are millions of pregnant women every week who are older than 35 years and still give birth in normal vaginal deliveries.
Of course, there ARE additional risks when you are older than 35. However, your doctor seems to forget that C-sections come with their own very specific risks...
By the way: normally, a single loop around the neck is also not a reason for a c-section. Normally, a baby can still be born in a normal birth in that case (unfortunately, we have not yet made a video on this topic)...
So again, we wholeheartedly recommend that you talk with another doctor about your case!
      We hope this helps! 😊
We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

Yayy so early today! 💕I have literally been binge watching all your videos!
I hope i get an answer from you guys🥺
I am 39+4 today with no sign of labor at all. I have been experiencing sharp pains on my cervix since 36weeks.
I went to the hospital and was told at 39weeks i am only half a cm dilated.
My due date is 19/09, literally 5days to go
I took castor oil at 38weeks but apart from diarrhea nothing happened. I have been walking/exercising and been trying to be active. I have also eaten dates and had raspberry tea leaves every time. I was told my baby’s head is already down just that my cervix has not opened.
I have taken castor oil again today. What advice do you have for me? I truly want to give birth before or on my due date🥺 but I don’t see no signs at all.
Also i watched a video of yours on position of the baby and according to your examples (especially the pointed belly button) i think my baby is facing my back.
    Please advise 🥺❤️

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  Před rokem +8

      Hi there! 😊
Thanks so much for sharing your case with us!! 😊
Okay, so, the most important thing that should have happened by now is that your cervix got soft. That is what the dates are for, and also the exercising and acupressure etc.
Please DO NOT worry too much about dilation! We know many women do because they are being told that it is all about dilation. The reality is that many women go into labor without being dilated at all! Trust us: your contractions will take care of that...
That said, yes, it WOULD be great if you could be just a tiny little bit dilated before labor starts just because it makes a spontaneous start of labor more likely. But it seems that your body is already working on it!
Now, in order to support the whole process, it is important to understand that your baby's head plays an important role when it comes to your cervical changes.
The fact that your baby is head down and facing your back is GREAT! Ideally, your baby is also engaged because then, there will be much more pressure on your cervix. As a result, your labor is more likely to start sooner than later.
Here is how to engage baby (if it has not happened yet): czcams.com/video/A8_JTWASGHw/video.html
And then, ideally, you also sit in a good position because that too will increase the pressure on your cervix: czcams.com/video/K5uxfr0YJ_E/video.html. In fact, this sitting position will help your baby to better align with your pelvis.
Most importantly though: PLEASE DO NOT WORRY! We know, it's so easy to say. However, on average, a pregnancy lasts between 38 and 42 weeks. Everything within that range is considered "normal". And statistically, this means that some will give birth after their due date, some will give birth before their due date.
However, one thing which will most likely not work is if you are over-concerned about going into labor before your due date. Trust that your body knows what it is doing! In fact, you can see that it does: it's already working on your dilation. So your labor WILL start, sooner or later. It does not really matter.
So, just try to see this in a more relaxed way. Your baby will come when your baby is ready to do so! In the meantime, you can support your body create an environment, in which your baby is able to come rather sooner than later...
We hope this makes sense! 😊
We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby!! ❤️

I am 37 weeks going on 38 this Wednesday, first time pregnant and have been experiencing a lot of things and with some my midwife doesn't seem to know what's going on. First I had what seemed like false labour contractions about two weeks ago and a runny tummy but was advised to soak in a warm bath with epsom salts and it stopped. As of this past Monday I have been experiencing these shock like pains in my pelvis going down my groin to my inner thighs and knees and it makes me drag my feet. It lasts for hours then stops on its own but happens mostly at night. I never struggled with nausea much but now I constantly get nauseous even when I haven't eaten and have heartburn that I never suffered from at all since the beginning. I didn't have an appetite for the past week but now it's back and greater than before. My hips ache and I can nolonger lay down for too long. My mom says labour is on the horizon but I don't know what's going on. I am calm though just feel really tired now haha

      @CareAboutLittleOnes  Před rokem +3

      Hi there 😊,
thanks a lot for sharing your case with us! 😊
It is difficult for us to tell you what it is that you are experiencing. However, it COULD be that the "false labor contractions" made your baby drop in your pelvis (here is a video that explains the signs when a baby has dropped: czcams.com/video/9IXI5sG-d7w/video.html).
So, sometimes, a woman may experience contractions that feel like the real thing. However, they only last between hours or up to 3 days. And then when they are over, the baby has dropped. And based on the symptoms that you describe, this is what COULD have happened...
So, you did the right thing: you talked with your midwife about it and now all you can do is try to relax as good as possible. Apparently, your body is doing something. So, eventually, you WILL go into labor. 😊
We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby!! ❤️

      Hi there 😘,
first of all, thanks so much for your lovely feedback!! It is really much appreciated!! 😊❤️
      Regarding your question:
Please understand that we cannot make any recommendations as to what you should do in your case! This is something that only a doctor can do who is familiar with your pregnancy case (besides, we could get into legal troubles).
We can only give you the following general information:
Studies show that oligohydramnios (low levels of amniotic fluid) increases various risks for the baby (such as developmental problems).
However, one has to take into consideration if that level has been low throughout the third trimester. Or, if it only decreased at the end of the pregnancy (in fact, from about week 36, the level of amniotic fluid naturally decreases - although normally not THAT much so that it qualifies as oligohydramnios)...
Personally, we DO know several women who had the same problem: an amniotic fluid level ranging in the 5th to 10th percentile area at 38/39 weeks.
In some cases, their doctors recommended an induction. In other cases, they did not. So, it very much depends on the situation (and probably also the doctor). For example, one also has to take into consideration the growth of the baby and if there are any issues.
By the way: What happened was that in both groups, most women ended up going into labor spontaneously. And they all gave birth to perfectly healthy babies, without any complications whatsoever. But of course, this does not mean that all pregnancies with oligohydramnios will end in the same positive way...
Therefore, we can only recommend getting a second opinion! Your doctor is supposed to look into your pregnancy history and to take everything into account!
We really hope this helps you at least a little! 😊
We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

Originally I was hoping for a more natural birth but my baby is now turned breech. My doctor wants to do a C-Section or induce me in 2 days. I want the baby to turn so I have a chance at a vaginal birth, and I have done as much as I could. My chiropractor also told me I have a misaligned tailbone that's set forward and could make pushing harder. Have you ever heard of that happening?
I appreciate this video because since I found out our baby is coming breech I have tried to calm down but have been kind of a nervous wreck. I'm doing foot zoning (basically reflexology) again tonight in an effort to calm down. Of course, my foot zoning lady has had to study how not to accidentally induce labor. 😁

      Hi there 😊,
thanks so much for sharing this with us! 😊
First of all, it's great that you see a chiropractor! They can be a big help when it comes to turning a breech baby.
Can we also ask you if you have already tried our exercises and moxibustion: czcams.com/video/e-kh6nxGkCk/video.html. While there is no guarantee that they work, they DID help lots of women turn their babies.
Second, yes, we had a few cases of a misaligned tailbone. However, in none of these cases did it cause any problems during their delivery. But this may also have to do with the degree of misalignment?
It is so hard to come up with good advice here! Most women would be a "nervous wracks" in your situation. So, don't worry about it! After all, if you really end up in a C-section, you don't need to worry about your emotions...
So, at this point, we can only really recommend trying the exercises and moxibustion unless you cannot do these exercises (f.e. due to spine-related problems).
We really hope they will help you! 😊
We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby!! ❤️

      @CareAboutLittleOnes  Před rokem +2

      Hi there Diana 😊,
if you have had at least some contractions in the past, it is normally easier to intensify them with the help of nipple stimulation. So that could help!
In addition, exercises and reflexology can help (more in this video: czcams.com/video/8rehbupwhzY/video.html).
And then of course, it would also be great to sit in a way that supports the whole labor process: czcams.com/video/K5uxfr0YJ_E/video.html
Finally: we know this is so easy to say and much more difficult to do: please STOP worrying! On average, a pregnancy lasts between 38 and 42 weeks. Everything within that range is normal.
The fact that you got at least some contractions shows you that your body is at least doing something! So, trust that your body knows what it is doing (and tell your partner to give you a relaxing massage treatment)!
We really hope this helps! 😊

    Hi🙂
Thank you for giving so much information through your videos❤️ I have a query, I’m 27 weeks pregnant with my second baby. My baby has come to cephalic position in 19 weeks and by 22-24 weeks I could feel my baby in lower abdomen slightly near the pelvic bone. I have slight pain on the pelvic bone but it’s manageable. Is this normal to feel baby near the pelvic region by 22-27 weeks? Will this result in early delivery like 37-38 weeks time? Are there chances that I have a short labour?

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  Před rokem +1

      Hi there 😊,
      good question! 😊
Normally, feeling baby near the pelvic bone is not a reason to worry. The only question: where exactly do you feel baby? Because if you feel baby too low in your pelvis, it could be that baby has dropped.
This is something that should normally happen around week 36. If it happens too early, there is a certain risk of a preterm labor.
Here is a video in which we describe the symptoms when a baby has dropped: czcams.com/video/9IXI5sG-d7w/video.html.
Again, normally, the chances for this to happen at 22-27 weeks are very low. However, if you believe that baby could have dropped or that your baby is otherwise unwell, we recommend getting in touch with your provider! It's always the right thing to do!
By the way: whether or not you are going to have a short labor very much depends on factors like baby's position, baby's size, weight etc. Therefore, it is impossible to say now, if your labor is gonna be short.
However, in general, second deliveries go much faster and smoother...
      We hope this helps! 😊

Actually, this (normally) means that the pain is out of control.
The problem is that the jaw, diaphragm and pelvic floor are connected with each other. If there is tension in your jaw, you can pretty much assume that the same applies to the diaphragm and pelvic floor. This makes the whole process a lot more difficult....

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  Před rokem +1

      Hi there Anna 😊,
      good point!!
A delivery should consist of both: phases of active movements and phases of resting. Please don't think that just because you rest on the bed for a while will prevent baby from moving further down - your contractions will take care of that.
So, there will be times when you are on your feet, supporting your baby with the right movements (f.e. rotating your hips while standing and leaning against your partner) and then there will be times when you just lie on your side. And it's exactly as you said: your body will tell you what is right for you!
Also, keep in mind that certain labor positions allow you to do both, support your baby's descent AND relax. For example, you could kneel in front of a birth ball and lean over the birth ball in an upright position. Perfect to support your body AND relax... ;-)
So, all we can tell you is: listen to your body! 😊

      @@rajinim4812 Got you!!
So, the problem is that oftentimes, when things seem to take longer, like when you have on and off contractions, it's often because baby is trying to find a better position for labor.
In those cases, it often takes longer before labor progresses. However, we are not gonna lie to you: it is very difficult to guide you with the right exercises, if we don't know if baby is occiput posterior or anterior...
However, what you COULD try (and this has really helped many women) is birth ball exercises. Because those can help your baby find a better position for labor.

I had my normal delivery last Monday with few vaginal stitches. It's painful but I am afraid that it may get infected. How should I know that if something is wrong with my stitches?? And now my breasts are heavy and it's painful too... What should I do??? Thank you 💗

      Hi there 😊,
first of all: CONGRATULATIONS on your baby!!! 🥰🥰 We hope everything went well - except from the stitches of course....
      Regarding your questions:
When it comes to your stitches, watch out for swelling! Also, keep in mind that it is not supposed to be particularly painful. If it is or if you have any concerns about an infection, please do not hesitate to call your doctor!! It's always the right thing to do!
As for your breasts: they are heavy and painful because they want to be emptied 😊 So, the only thing that can help here is your baby... 😊
      We hope this helps! 😊
We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

      Hi there 😊,
please note that for most women, week 37 is still very early days!
If you are about one finger with dilated already at 37 weeks, then this is fantastic! You really don't need to worry! Your body clearly prepares for labor.
Now, it's basically just a waiting game! But soon, you will hold that sweet little thing in your arms!
In the meantime, this could help:
In this video (czcams.com/video/8rehbupwhzY/video.html) we explain several tools to prepare for labor and induce labor.
Moreover, birth ball exercises could help (czcams.com/video/UgrbOc4cebY/video.html)
On top of that, the right sitting position can also support the whole process (czcams.com/video/K5uxfr0YJ_E/video.html)
      We hope this helps! 😊
We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby!! ❤️

      Hi there 😊,
      don't worry, this can happen!
If you are 3cm dilated at this point, lean back and relax! Your body is clearly preparing for labor! The rest will happen once labor has started! 😊

      Hi there 😊,
we clearly recommend NOT to fast when you are pregnant! It is really not good for the baby.
As far as we know, it is okay for religious women not to fast during Ramadan when they are pregnant... At least, this is what we are being told... 😊
So, if possible, please do not fast!
      We hope this helps! 😊

I’m 38+5 weeks today. I had my cerclage removed at 36 weeks with no dilation. 38 weeks had cervix check and dilating at 2cm. 2 days ago I was eating at a restaurant and halfway through I felt pulsating/throbbing sensation at my anus that lasted about 1:50 mins. It happens twice back to back. The first one i could not speak while my husband asking me questions. After the second time, i finished my meal and went back home.
Today after shower, I felt a bad menstrual cramp. First one lasted 1:50mins, and the second wave came back to back again also lasted 1:50mins. The first one was quite intense but second one was mild. Both accompanied with rock solid hard tummy. After some breathing excercise to calm myself, it goes away and never came back again. This whole day I felt fatigue and tired out of sudden although I’m a couch potato.
What do you make of this? Is this just braxton hicks? Am i dilating more? Or am in active labor?

      Hi there Ash 😊,
if it felt like a menstrual cramp and your tummy felt hard while you experienced it, it is indeed most likely a contraction. However, you are certainly not in active labor because then, your contractions would come back at least every 5 minutes.
It is not uncommon to experience such irregular contractions during the phase before labor starts. For example, in the pre-labor phase, women often experience irregular contractions which come and go every 10-20 minutes. It's an up and down before they eventually form a pattern.
But you are only gonna be in labor once your contractions become more regular and frequent and come in closer and closer intervals.
Please do talk with your midwife as well about your experience! Maybe, this information is relevant to them based on your pregnancy history...
      We hope this helps! 😊
We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby!! ❤️

I had that bad pain in my bottom in waves with my third baby. I was dilating hard and fast, and did not know it. You might have a baby real soon! When I got to the hospital I was 9cm already.
