Authorities respond to a call from an apartment complex. A resident had found someone lying on the ground, tucked under the stairs to the back of the building. They wondered if they might be sleeping rough and taking shelter, but as they got closer, they saw a pool of blood, and it was now obvious that this was a homicide.

Just because a person appears to be acting calmly and rationally doesn't mean they aren't unwell. I also think the mental health defence is overused and exploited and people get off when they shouldn't. I'm just saying mental illness is tricky to navigate and is more complicated then people think. Again not saying this is thr case for this crime

She was literally buying a new tool to murder her next victim when they arrested her. She will kill again as soon as she is released, and when she does, I hope the jury members that acquitted her understand how badly they screwed up. And that the high courts understand how moronic their rejection of the prosecutorial appeal was. This woman is extremely dangerous.
This was an unbelievable miscarriage of justice. She appeared entirely lucid in the footage of her buying tools and items for the first murder kit, planned the murder, deliberately chose to attack Marcel knowing he was seriously intoxicated and would be unable to fight back not the other people she was with that night who would have overpowered her quickly, approached him from behind while he was half passed out, moved his body and tried to cover up where he was attacked, changed her bloody clothes, disposed of two bags of evidence one of which she stated they needed to watch sink in the water to make sure it was gone, rejoined friends and pretended like nothing happened and continued the night as normal. She was very much responsible for her actions and had the mental capacity to grasp what she was doing, and that it was wrong.
Canadian courts are ludicrous, they have a bunch of clowns serving jury duty and as sitting judges up there.

Yeah, I am a very kind person and like, animals, people in a rough spot, they often are able to spot me, and know I'm someone safe.
I lived with my uncle for a bit as a young man and, he was an alcoholic, a big partier, he'd smoke crack when his monthly check came in. I'd join in, because he offered and, to my thinking back then, why not?
"Cocaine psychosis" is freakishly common among crack smokers, it manifests different ways, I believe something like 20% of all people will experience it, typically every single time they smoke.
I had girls and women who were smoking crack pull me into back rooms and bathrooms and stuff and start sharing with me that they're scared of someone who is there... Also, assert that such and such car has circled the block five times, despite being in an apartment with the blinds drawn and curtains closed and no way to sit outside, lol.
I'd always calmly explain to them that they're feeling the effects of cocaine psychosis and that they're safe and fine, try and calm them.
But yeah, this perception that an attack is imminent, that they can discern someone's motives and they're planning to hurt them is fairly common for women. Though, I've never seen anyone ACT on that violently or anything. Maybe they'd leave a location or whatever, but this kind of reaction truly is rare

My heart breaks for Marcel Reardon and his family. This tragic case serves as a painful reminder of the devastating impact addiction and mental health struggles can have on someone's life. Marcel's journey was filled with pain and turmoil, and the brutality of his death is utterly heart-wrenching. The fact that his killer, Ann Norris, was found not criminally responsible due to mental health issues leaves me with mixed emotions. It highlights the urgent need for better support and resources for those battling addiction and mental health challenges. May Marcel's soul find peace, and may his story inspire greater compassion and understanding towards those in need.

I don’t think her mental issues have anything to do with why she killed him. She may be mentally ill, but that’s not where her sadistic nature comes from. She’s a truly sick person, but it’s not because of her bipolar diagnosis. She knew exactly what she was doing and purposely chose him to kill, knowing he would be wasted and wouldn’t fight her back like the other guy she was with that night or Jessica would have.

@@Tsumami__ I appreciate your perspective on this tragic case. It's essential to recognize that mental health is a complex issue, and it's not always straightforward to determine the exact factors contributing to someone's actions. While we may have different views, I believe that it's crucial to consider the impact of mental health struggles and addiction on both the victim and the perpetrator.
It's possible that Ann Norris's actions were influenced by multiple factors, including her mental health condition. Mental illness can affect people in different ways and may sometimes lead to unpredictable and harmful behavior. However, it's essential not to generalize or stigmatize individuals with mental health issues based on the actions of a few.
Regardless of the specific reasons behind the tragedy, I hope we can agree that this case underscores the urgent need for improved support and resources for those facing mental health challenges and addiction. By increasing compassion and understanding, we can strive to prevent such devastating incidents in the future and offer help to those who need it.

There is a reason why it is hard when mental illness is involved. I work in mental health, I looked after someone who was intelligent etc. He started to get unwell and got admitted due to delusions and homicidal ideation. He had planned a murder out, started preparing knew how he was going to cover it up. His delusions involved conspiracies that the police would torture him, horrific punishments if he didn't follow through with the murder etc. The scary part was he was able to rationalise it, was able to calmly purchase the things he needed but he was completely psychotic. He got better and was horrified by it all

Let's be real, there was automatically very clear bias in this case with the murderer looking like a girl next door babysitter and the victim being a large drunken man. I would challenge every one on the jury and the judges as to whether they would be comfortable with Ann living in their neighborhood. If the answer is no, then WTF should she be allowed to eventually be out freely in society?! I'm not that surprised with this being Canada given I watched a previous Canadian case where a man brutally beat and ate a man on a bus and was ruled not criminally responsible, put in a mental institute, released and given a new identity. The very best you could hope for was then they had beenie weenies, you know, baked beans with hot dogs cut into pieces and dropped in there. It tastes alright, it's heavy, and it's loaded with carbs, fat, protein, fiber, sugar, salt... Just all you need, and some stuff that you just want, even if you don't NEED it.
The absolute worst was those days when the soup kitchen was just giving out straight-up soup. God, that was bad.
I remember days I had walked the two miles to get there and seen there's nothin but soup being ladelled out of one big pot into cup-sized styrofoam bowls.
Soup, crackers, then coffee or bug juice to drink... God, that's the last think you wanna see when you just walked a couple miles in hopes of a filling meal. It's enough to bring a tear to the eye.
If I were a volunteer there, I assume these rare soup-only meals happen when volunteers just don't show and it's like, two people are there and they just don't have time to do more.
They should hang on to the little odds and end they sometimes get, bag em up and save those for such occasions, because God it is just bad to be hungry and get handed a cup of chowder and a packet of crackers, lol

The laws believe it or not are setup to go against good people, research the system deeply enough and the normal person's will see just how evil and corrupt governmental man made laws are. And her father made sure she had a former Justice Minister, as a lawyer.
Do you think Marcel’s family had those kind of resources?
It is the lawyers that make the arguments that the jury bases their judgment on.
Also what evidence should or should not be allowed which the judge bases his/hers judgment on.
The best lawyer often wins, despite their client being guilty/innocent or not.
If Marcel had had the better lawyer, I am convinced we had seen a different outcome.

@@Sanne_Mathiasen I'm questioning if you're just speculating on everything here because you really aren't making much sense. Marcel's family wouldn't need "resources" as it was the prosecution who had to present/put on the case. Also, juries base their verdict based on the evidence presented, of which the lawyers' arguments are not evidence. And if the lead prosecutor wasn't a competent or effective attorney, I don't think he or she would be appointed to trying cases.

Thank you for covering this, I think it's a very interesting case and you're right about the verdict being uncommon due to its being an incredibly difficult thing to prove. (and therefore rarely overturned).
Maybe you could do a series on the back-stories of unusual and/or unexpected verdicts?

Mental health care is extremely important, and it's my field of work, so I would never doubt anyone's struggle. However, I have no idea where to stand on that woman's case. I mean, she was obviously in an awful psychological whirlpool, and I guess she suffered from her disorders. But I can't say someone with a mental health issue cannot be cruel, mean, and evil.

It would be better for humanity if we just imprisoned everyone who causes another persons death regardless of their excuses. Yes, there would be cases where it’s unfair but things have gone way to far the other way. This woman isn’t any kind of victim except of her own hideous nature. In western society a sibling a close family member is struggling to eat and survive and no one offer them help.
    It's TRUE.
Parents living in homes while kids being homeless.
While on India, if anyone struggles family pulls them together.
You would have food, shelter and support.
It always catches me off gamurd.
What kind of family system is that?
    This is not family.
This is you are on your own.
