    The aim was to enjoy a wild / stealth camp at Dunskey Castle - a ruin near Portpatrick and the start of the Southern Upland Way - and enjoy some landscape photography during sunset and sunrise. Once the sun had set, Hubert and I settled down in our tents for something to eat, enjoying the unusually warm Octobers night.
    In the middle of the night, I was awoken by my Hexpeak tent being battered by crazy 50mph winds and soon we found ourselves trapped in a rain storm. I had to rush out into the cold and wet night to help Hubert because his Zastrugi Vaquita tent was being pummeled by the gale force wind and was eventually ripped out of the ground!
    FYI : This video includes a flashing head torch at 12:16 (see chapter below) for a minute or so.

    Happy New year...i am just revisiting this video to thank you for the inspiration to buy a Hex Peak V4A.....i have been out several times in mine now and i spent NYE on Kinder Scout exposed to 48 to 50mph winds and driving rain for 15 hours. It stood up to the task no problem. I have perfected my pegging out using a total of 22 pegs of different types. The 4 main corner points i use the 9 inch MSR Twisty things then back them up with V Pegs in the loops then all the others are pegged out using 9 inch Easton Nail pegs backed up with v pegs and it keeps the tent solid...its definitely the best value for money 4 season tent out there IMO of course for what thats worth.

      Excellent, aye, they are very strong tents and great in the wind, you might not get a great nights sleep in such conditions, but at least you'll be sheltered from the worst of the weather. I defo recommend some good strong pegs and you can either go for the missing link (different sizes for different types of poles) or a single 140cm+ pole with a flick lock (better if it's 2 sections rather than 3.

  • @5unTours
    @5unTours Před 2 lety +1

    Well, there is joy ... You are really beaming in view of the good storm behavior of your new tent. 🤣
    I am surprised that Hubert's pegs didn't hold up. These pegs were supplied with my "ROBENS Kite "and I was so impressed that I also equipped my "LanShan 2 Pro" with them (X-pegs or Y-pegs always collect the wet soil in the grooves) and the included ones were too "filigree" for me. So far they have held up very well in the type of soil I found on my trips. If I have concerns about this, I weigh them down with a stone. And I pay attention to putting them into the ground so that the tent lines come off at right angles as possible. I stick them as completely as possible into the ground (they really aren't that long).

    • @outlawedlandscapes
      @outlawedlandscapes  Před 2 lety

      Indeed, I was having a great time!!! :D
      I think there were a couple of elements that gave Hubert problems;
      1. The candy cane / shepherds hook pegs supplied with the Zastrugi were 4" long and very thin, so they weren't gripping very well even though the ground was rocky below the soil and we had to hammer the pegs in.
      2. This was Huberts first time pitching the tent as he'd just bought it. We'd gone over it before bed, but obviously it wasn't pitched 100%
      3. The winds weren't forecasted to be so strong/sustained. We knew that it might be wild for 1/2 hours, but aside from that we weren't expecting an all-night storm xD
      I'm glad to say that Hubert has taken my advice and purchased some heavy duty y pegs and a set of 'nails' - so hopefully we'll see the Zastrugi Vaquita back out soon and see what it's capable of, because it's a very interesting tent similar to the Scarp 1 :D

    Great video on so many levels! I loved the adder footage - I've still never seen one live, astonishing considering the amount of rough terrain I've tramped through! I'll consider buying a Hexpeak, maybe a mini. Strong winds terrify me and I avoid camping if gusts over 25mph are forecast. But reading these comments is like taking a degree course in tent pitching - with a good robust tent and the right pegs I'd sleep more soundly.

    • @natalieminnis
      @natalieminnis Před rokem +1

      Re- flashing head torch (which I hardly noticed till I read the comments) I also hate bright lights if I wake up at night. I bought a reading light on ebay that fits round your neck. It has a low light setting and it's brilliant for car or campsite camping - gives you just enough light without blinding you. It might be a bit heavy for wild camping - 170g.

    • @outlawedlandscapes
      @outlawedlandscapes  Před rokem +1

      Hi Natalie, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
      The adder was a really nice find, though it's a bit of a shame as I spoke to a chap about it and he said that it was most likely to be trying to 'perish' - way out of season and they usually aren't so visible on public paths like that one was. Hopefully not the case though and it's always a pleasure to see them. Glen Rosa seems to be an excellent place for spotting them, as I've seen one every time I've been up there.
      I'd say anything beyond 25mph is never going to result in a comfortable camp/sleep. The hexpeak works extremely well, but the noise and the uncertainty of gusts hitting a tent (especially on a far flung summit) preoccupies me. Still though, I'm glad I've got a tent that will serve me well for when the shtf! 😀
      Good tip on the reading light, I've now got a vlogging light for the gopro and a wee tent lantern and between the two I've got plenty of light to play with, which isn't blinding 😅

    • @outlawedlandscapes

  • @davids9549
    @davids9549 Před rokem +4

    Great vid - V4A rules OK! If you're serious about tent use, you own a selection of your preferred stakes, and ignore those provided by manufacturers with their tents. This is because there's no such thing as a stake which is suitable for a particular tent, but rather that different stakes are suited to particular functions on particular types of terrain in particular kinds of weather. So prior to embarking on a hike you choose which stakes you think will serve best on that hike. I'd prefer if no stakes at all were provided with tents, and that they were treated as a separate purchase.

    • @outlawedlandscapes
      @outlawedlandscapes  Před rokem +1

      Hex ya bass! I'm with you on the stakes, I generally just use the 6 ground nails as my primary stakes - they hold in anything - but I'm looking for a slightly lighter weight option (maybe carbon fiber/hollow 'tube steaks'). I've tried various different types (those sea to summit 'ground control' pegs all fell apart at £25 a set!!) and I'm happy with the luxe ones. Hubert's tent poles look more like crochet hooks. The flashing red light has the potential to give some people with epilepsy, seizures; I only know that, because my son has that issue.(not upset about it, just letting you know, in case you didn't) Poor Coop, he really loves you, but he wanted to leave you in that wind, and take shelter in the castle. Hell of a test for your tent, and it stood up to it. Stay well. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for watching and commenting, I hadn't considered that as it's quite a 'slow' flash, thanks for highlighting it though & I'll stick a note in the description just in case :) I'm not sure if he wanted to leave me or just get back to his stone - as soon as he was free of the tent he was rolling about and making a racket with it xD
      Definitely not conditions I'd seek out in future, but I'm glad to know that the tent can handle wayward stormy conditions :)

    Great video and great to see the Hexpeak standing up to some abuse! Just a quick question about pegging it down - It looks like you had the pegs quite far away from the bottom hem of the fly, how did you keep the hem so close to the ground? Did you have 2 pegs on each tie down point? I find having the pegs close the hem keeps "mid" tents closer to the ground, moving them outwards results in them floating above the ground.

    • @outlawedlandscapes
      @outlawedlandscapes  Před 2 lety +4

      Hi Adam, thanks for watching! When I replaced all of the tie out cords with 3mm dyneema (to allow the line-locs to grip better) I measured out exactly six inches from the line loc to the loop, adding a knot at the correct length between the two - this means I won't get any more than six inches of slack and gives me a 'template' for the process in the following paragraph. This applies to both the six main tie out points & the five auxiliary tie outs.
      When I'm pitching the fly, I roughly position the 'rectangle' shape pegs & before I move to the front/back (or apexes) I then pull each corner and peg out with a slight bit of tension. I then perform the same action on the apex sections. Once the pole is in and the mid is erected, I then pull the cords (set at six inches each thanks to my knots) taut.
      This means that there is equal tension on each point and the six inches keep it nice and low whilst allowing airflow. If I really want to nail it to the ground, I simply lower the central pole a wee bit and retention the tie outs. With the aux tie outs, I only ever really take the slack out of the lines as these are secondary (non weight bearing) fixing points.
      In reality, this process doesn't take long. If the ground is uneven, it might take a bit longer :)
      Does this rambling answer your question? I hope so, haha! :)

      @@outlawedlandscapes thanks for quick response! Yeah, more fiddling required on my part. I've got the Liteway PyraOmm and the catenary cut on the diagonal seams prevent me getting as much tension on the seams as I'd like, especially when the wind blows.

      I don't have any experience / have never even heard of that tarp, but I've looked it up & see what you mean. I'm going to cover weight & inner solutions in another video, but all in for me with the stock inner it comes in at 1.8kg - that's with heavy duty pegs as well, 15 in total.
      The flysheet/tarp itself is just under 700g though, so a lot of weight to be saved!

      @@outlawedlandscapes Cheers for the fast response m8. How do you find the mesh inner? Was sort of hoping there would be a hybrid 3-4 season inner available without mesh at the top (in my experience it's good to have a solid top inner as it prevents condensation dripping from the inside of the fly through the inner mesh and unto sleeping equipment).

    • @outlawedlandscapes
      @outlawedlandscapes  Před 2 lety

      No worries, to be honest I find it a bit airy now that the autumn has settled in, the solid fabric would be much better if it was 3/4 of the way up. The stock inner is pretty heavy & a 4 season 1.5p alternative can be found at more than half the weight! I'm actually planning on ordering a 4 season 2p inner for the colder months when I'll be faced with a lot of snow & long nights - make use of all that space!

      With winter coming, I wanted something with a decent bit of living room inside it for the 14+ hours of darkness and potential bad weather out on the hills, I’ve got the OEX Phoxx 2 which is low profile and had the Phoxx 1 before that, both bombproof were shelters, just a bit too small for my needs.
      Hubert’s Zastrugi isn’t all that high tbh, and with better stakes and stronger gauge guy lines (and practice) I think it’ll be more that capable. The Hexpeak itself is based on the teepee design, renowned for its wind shedding ability 👌🏻

      I know Alpkit have titanium versions which are lighter, but they lack a catching point which is a PITA. Ray from RS Outdoors has some carbon fibre ones, but the chap that made them died. Would be interesting to try something similar!

      I used 6x nails for the main tie-outs, 3 large groundhogs for the guys (attached to the tent via nite-ize s-biners) & 5x Sea to Summit 'ground control' pegs for the aux tie outs. I actually cut this out of the video as it was a bit of a rant, but one of the STS pegs snapped under load - this has also happened twice before. They're 11g, but they are really poor pegs for the price IMO. I'll definitely be getting something similar to the nails for the guys & adding two extra guy lines (though the three did an excellent job!).
      I'm not actually a fan of the bad weather camping, but sometimes the photography dictates the weather & I need my kit to support me if and when possible. The Hexpeak has proved its worth now & I'm very, very satisfied :)
