  • Off out wild camping in the campsies, up Meikle Bin. I was testing a new tent from Crua Outdoors: Crua Duo. It ended up being a windy camp, with strong, gale force winds.

    Wild Camping in GALE FORCE winds | Meikle Bin, The Campsies | Crua Duo Tent
    So me and GazTheExplorer decided on a little trip up Meikle Bin. It was a good 1 hour and 45 minute walk from the car with all our gear, gradual climb, and not difficult at all. Forecast said there could be some heavy showers, but my prayers weren't answered. We pitched at the summit, it was a quiet spot, and we took in the views - and you could see my flat! It was an early night, but I was woken up with gale force winds which exceeded 50mph. Wild camping the way I like it and what a performance the new tent put in. But: how was the condensation that bad? Did I make the mistake of boiling the JetBoil in the tent? It was drafty with vents everywhere! Anyway, enjoy this little camp in windy conditions and sleep naked!
    Look after yourselves, and again, thanks for the kind messages regarding my health x

    Monty Outdoors now has English subtitles! Just choose "English" and you are good to go :) So a few things to take from this video: Why on earth was the condensation so bad? No way was it because I boiled water in the tent. And do you sleep wearing clothes or naked/in your underwear? All my warmest sleeps have been in my underwear and I'm a strong believer the heat that radiates off your body circulates the bag easier. I hope you enjoy the content and what a performance in the wind from the new tent.

      I thought the tent was gonna blow down when you did the outside shots! I wonder if towelling off the condensation would've helped or was it just constantly producing condensation? Tents also single skinned, which doesn't help.

      I agree with you Monty, about stripping to your skivvies. Keeping bundled up is a waste of time. Doesn't let your body breath. Dampness can't escape & you get colder. No clothes=warm toasty body.

    I have the same OEX leviathan. I've only used it twice. Once in the summer and once just last week at the most northerly point in Ireland. I wore a merino base layer and a fleece with thermal leggings. I find all sleeping bags to be a pain in the backside. You fall asleep in the normal position but then wake up a few hours later and the hood is over your face. So what I've started doing is opening up the bag completely and use it as a makeshift quilt. I also bring a thermal liner to help guard against small draft coming in. Some day I'll invest in a proper 4 season quilt. But no big complaints about the Leviathan yet. I hope to use it again soon as the weather is getting steadily colder in Ireland now.

    • @MontyOutdoors
      @MontyOutdoors  Před 2 lety +2

      I've had it around freezing and I can't say I've been toasty and it claims to go down to minus 16! I had it down to -8 and I did not have a warm sleep and that was also with the NeoAir xLite. I did feel as if I went into the bag warm too. Hm. I'll definitely try it out again this winter, but I most likely will be purchasing a very good thermal liner.
      Appreciate the comment, Chris. Hope you are well.

      @@MontyOutdoors Thanks Mate. One thing I did notice after my last camp with the Leviathan was that some of the down looked to be a bit clumped together in certain parts of the bag. In the sunlight I could where this was happening. My bag didn't get wet at all either. What I'm going to do on my next trip out is to make sure that the down is well spread out. Perhaps the clumping creates gaps for warm air to escape. Might be worth checking your bag too. All the best.

    Cracking video with great Scottish conditions. In my experience it does not matter how good ventilation is, a single walled tent is going to get totally drenched in condensation at this time of year in the northern parts of the UK. Tent looks like a decent one for established campsites during the warmer months. Little tip, it's a lot warmer to put your foam mats unto of your air mattress, as the air mat will lose a lot of heat to the air so there is not much point trying to keep it warm rather keep it on the bottom for a bit of extra comfort.

    • @MontyOutdoors
      @MontyOutdoors  Před 2 lety +1

      I've just never had condensation issues until recently and you've just pointed it out: both tents I've had condensation issues with are single walled. Plus I boiled water in the tent twice, which probably did not help. Good spot! And I've never tried putting the foam mat on top and someone else also advised of it. I'm gonna try it tomorrow :) So thank you very much for the tip, hugely appreciated. I've always said that air mats also lose heat via convection and not just conduction. Do you think a liner around the mat could potentially help with that?

It helps me research and learn more fully the areas you take us, especially as Scotland is top of the list amongst the places I'd like to see. Appreciate your honest review of the tent's condensation and cold sleep mat. I think sleeping with as little as possible on is warmer, letting the bag and mat do their work. I am in bear country, though, so feel MUCH safer should I encounter one while partially clothed instead of going full monty. Ah the good old subjective topic of sleeping bags. I have the Leviathan and have successfully had it down to -21. So many things impact the performance though; e.g that most folk don't think about, if you are a big guy the bag might not loft enough to create suitable warmth, as that is effectively how down works.
    The zips are terrible and the bag loses so much down it's absurd, but as I said.. I have had it down to very cold temperatures, successfully, so it is manageable.
    I have recently purchased a Tundra -10 bag, which I don't find any warmer than the Leviathan, but the quality and weight are game changers, but then it is 4 times the price..
    As I said, very subjective topic.

    • @MontyOutdoors
      @MontyOutdoors  Před 2 lety +2

      WOW. -21 and you were toasty? Yeah I'm a tall, slim guy, so there is a lot of "empty space" in bags. I believe you want to have enough space to trap heat, but not too much? Hence why I stuff dry, warm clothes in my bags and try and sleep in fetal position. I've had it on a mat with an R value of 4.2 at -8 and wasn't impressed, but thank you so much for sharing your story. Have you had it in similar temperatures on other occasions?

    I've had this tent in my Amazon basket 3 times now but kept deciding against because it's single skinned. Looks like it'll take a beating but don't think it would keep me warm enough over winter months. Great space in it tho Monty and nice to see you review it, condensation for being up a windy hill looked bad, really bad, that's always gonna be the downside of single skinners. You can buy a 'cocoon' inner to put inside to make it more insulated but what's the point in that? Make a tent a tent lol. Leviathan sleeping bags are cheap for a reason - 2/3 seasons max I'd say (and yes, defo warmer when naked or with a merino baselayer) Any wildcamper heading out on the hills over winter knows they'll need decent bags and mats to be comfortable. It's very hard to do budget camping over the cold dark nights sensibly. Enjoyed that Monty - would have been nice to get a photo of Gaz's anemometer reading tho ;) X

Always bring a roll mat mate incase your air mat bursts: that has happened to me and it's additional insulation. But I've used the mat about 9 times and it's been fantastic and comfortable, butI wouldn't use below 6c personally. And Vango sleeping bags are absolutely warm! I loved the Latitude 400.
      Hope you are well, mate, and thanks for popping by Gordon.

      @@MontyOutdoors hi...no I believe they are fibreglass....orange in colour and a couple have stayed bent after 2 pitches..and the lines dint have adjuster clips either ..I only started wild camping this year..got it for half price ...so jumped at it...but it's too bulky again ..1.7 kg I think...needs stowed on outside of backpack in the two bags .
      When I have enough money I'll try a one man tent...just not that comfy in small spaces hence I got a two man .
      Plus I know it gets stick for being an inner first pitch ...but in decent weather that's ok.
      I tookup wild camping and wild swimming this year to help with depression.
      Not confident about winter hiking and camping though so doubt I'll be up a mountain now.
      I've also recently got a Covacure hammock...which seems fine . Practice pitched but yet to overnight .
      You're vlogs are inspiring me 🙏

    Condensation to the max! Monty , did u have all/some of the tents vents open? It does help reduce Condensation in tents m8. But sometimes weather conditions conspire and the best vented tents can still get Condensation. Enjoyed watching your vid 🏆. 👍

      @MontyOutdoors  Před 2 lety +2

      Yeah, I had them all open. Plus someone else said pretty much what you said and that maybe the air was so saturated it didn't stand a chance. Thanks for popping by as usual, Fraser. Appreciated mate.

      @@MontyOutdoors I think boiling water inside the tent was a bit of a mistake. But for a tall tent like that to hold up in such an exposed spot was impressive. Great videos.

    Wouldn't camp if you paid me, but i like the vids and admire you guys' nutjobbery. I was just thinking though Monty, if there are two hairy arsed guys in a tent cooking, eating and farting, would that not be a perfect storm for the formation of extreme condensation? It is in ma kitchen. I think you may be being slightly harsh on poor that tent big chap. No?

      We reckon it was very saturated air and the fact I boiled water in the tent twice. I had it out at the weekend there and you will see how it performed tomorrow. Much less condensation and I also wiped it down before bed. But it is a single skinner, so...
