    I really, really appreciate this video. I just got my first boat and have no dad or grandpa to ask these things. Excellent. Thank you so much

    396350 is the later 90s model kit. Nice to know it works because it's hard to find the older part number. I guess it's compatible replacement part. Great video. Time for me to do it lol

    I will be replacing the seals on my 85 Evinrude 15HP. I have oil coming out of from the bottom of where the water goes in. I’ve read a few chat boards that say the seals you replaced are the ones but can’t see how that is possible. What other seals would you recommend I look at replacing? Can’t find a shop that will work on this motor. They say it’s too old. She runs solid though. Thank you for making this easy to follow video.

    Great video and thank you very much. I am getting ready to do this on my 1980 Johnson 15 HP and appreciate the part number change. With this new type of seal do you put the spring side of the seal to the outside or inside, or does it matter? Thanks, Tom

      Did you ever find an answer to that?

      Mine has a tough time getting on plane with "weight" in the boat...( dare I define that? ) But with me alone it will pop right out of that lower RPM range and jump on plane and rev to a good running speed. For me, finding a prop with a little less pitch would be the solution ( like going to a lower gear on a motor vehicle ). You might be in that same grey zone where it doesn't have the power to pull out of that lower RPM range with your boat setup.
      If yours has the "mixture" adjustment know as mine does, try to lean it out a bit and see if that helps... if that does nothing either the first paragraph (power or prop) or some other mechanical / ignition type issue.

    Excellent video buddy I really appreciate it. Any reason you didn't run it with ear muffs and a hose?

    • @htssoutboardsboatstrains9784
      @htssoutboardsboatstrains9784  Před 3 lety

      ? Not sure I understand. I usually use a bucket of water to test as some motors simply won't work with "ears", and the big bucket or 55 gallon drum is more like reality in the water as well.

      @justinkiehl2904 Před 3 lety

      It was just a question why you preferred to test on the water rather than your driveway incase of failure. Whether it be in a bucket or muffs or whatever

    Hi great video very useful. I new to boating not sure where to buy parts from. Where can I start without feeling I’m being taken advantage of? Thanks. Keep the videos coming please.

    Is that new seal design working or did you end up using those two older style seals that you had ordered separately?

    • @htssoutboardsboatstrains9784
      @htssoutboardsboatstrains9784  Před 2 lety

      It did work and seemed fine, I have since sold that motor and got a 25hp Evinrude & another Mercury 200 20hp long shaft for that boat

    Would the "inelegant" video you mentioned have been made by a chap who likes VWs and custom motorbikes made from old bicycles?

    Anybody know about the part called a "prop hub"?

    • @htssoutboardsboatstrains9784
      @htssoutboardsboatstrains9784  Před 2 lety

      Many propellers have a rubber "shock absorbing" inner hub. Also replaceable. An example: www.ebay.com/itm/163487443395?hash=item26109c69c3:g:9McAAOSwd7xZsgqg

    Try doing that with a salt water engine.

      True, hope I never HAVE to.. :) ( I lived on the Hudson, brackish water; hammered apart many an old Mercury )

      You have a set of hands and a key board too...:) But why hunt for destruction vs. for the positives....hope folks are more interested in "softer" mechanical approaches. Problem is I learn these things the expensive way decades ago maintaining race bikes and on old outboards when living on the Hudson....brackish waters...and the BEST technic is to buy a FRESH WATER motor to start with on this back yard hobby projects..

      Sometimes when people get something for free they are not too bothered about how they go about exploring the item's problems and deficiencies..... mechanical sympathy goes out the window. Lets leave it there and appreciate the way Walt does display mechanical sympathy.
