Jaehaerys was actually a fairly dedicated swordsman. After Maegor died and Jaehaerys took the throne he ran off to Dragonstone with his sister Alyssane and his Kingsguard and got married in secret. He remained on Dragonstone with his sister and Kingsguard for well over a year until he was of age to officially take power. During that time it became extremely important to him to become a warrior, and he trained every day from sunrise to noon with his Kingsguard. He was afraid of being mistaken for a weak leader like his father, and people rising up against him. He wanted to make sure that he was ready and could crush anyone who thought to challenge him and his rule. He kept his training up for years after returning from Dragonstone, and by all accounts, he became a skilled swordsman.
Fun fact: the master-at-arms of dragonstone once said he's more skilled than maegor was.
I feel like this story about Jaehaerys is why Rhaegar suddenly began to show interest in swordsmanship and jousting and stuff. Before that he was the cute sad artist type...then one day he just approaches the master at arms like "Ok, get me ready to be king".
Do you think that had anything to do with the prophecy?
Yep. And while the Master-At-Arms said he would never be a Kingsguard, he did add “but if your uncle were to come back from the grave, my money would be on you.

King Jaehaerys is not a boring king... he's just the best Targaryen king who ever sit in the Iron throne
True.
Easily.
Alysanne*. It was heavily implied that the great deeds were actually Alysanne's doings. He just never gave credit ☠️.
@@Ilivedbih as usual, being a woman disqualifies you.
Also people gloss over how he treated the women in his life and call him perfect.
neither monarchy or misogyny are ok, weren't then, definitely aren't now.
@@Ilivedbih This is a deeply unfair analysis.
You're just spouting the opposite type of ideological nonsense. Jaehaerys and Alysanne were a power couple. It was their joint action that governed the realm so effectively. No sources indicate that it was solely "Alysanne's doings", and "fire and blood" is pretty straightforward regarding this particular point. It doesn't paint Jaehaerys as a god-king that solved every problem on his own. It simply paints him as "the conciliator", and Alysanne as "the good queen".
Jaehaerys knew how to handle his vassal lords, knew when to trust his council, regularly and openly asked for his queen's advice and respected her opinion enough to have it carry weight. The queen's law, the queen's gift, and the unofficial tradition of allowing women to speak their frustrations to the queen were all Alysanne's ideas, but somebody had to approve of those ideas.
Jahaerys had the wisdom to allow for that to happen, regardless of what other vassals might have thought of a queen's decision making.
Meanwhile the decisions regarding warfare, logistics, and morale were largely in the hands of Jahaerys. The queen would offer a softer or more diplomatic option when applicable, and he shot them down if he deemed it too soft-hearted. At the same time, it was Jaehaerys and jaehaerys alone that prevented another civil war from breaking loose in the form of bringing storm's end back to the fold, all when he was but a young lad.
If there was one major flaw in BOTH of them, it's that they were absolutely horrible at actually raising their children. I can only assume they gave that task to their maids and ladies in waiting, possibly their maesters (whose allegiance at this point is highly dubious, as they may have just as easily been plotting for decades at this point to end the targaeryan rule and the rule of dragons.) Neither of them cared much for their children's actual hopes and dreams of their own, seemed to only really be interested in creating alliances through marriage (which isn't a bad thing, but it's also not something all children, especially the ones with dragons, may look forward to very much.)
The entire point of that whole part of the book is that nothing really ever got better after their deaths. None of the kings afterward had that particular combination of respect, patience, wisdom, combat prowess, diplomatic skill and sheer presence that Jaehaerys had, and it speaks volumes regarding the state of feudal westerosi society that no other "good queen" emerged after Alysanne.
(One last note: fire and blood is particularly venomous towards those people who passed over rhaenys with regards to the succession crisis that almost happened upon his death. This, I believe, is decidedly unfair. The book paints the decision to pass over rhaenys as one based solely on sexism. This is blatantly false. Rhaenys' children would have been velaryons, essentially ending the targaeryan line's dynasty. And having a female heir presents problems with regards to keeping the stability of the realm intact, due to stillbirths, infertility at an early age, and mothers dying at childbirth, all of which jaehaerys and Alysanne had a lot of painful experience with. Male inheritants all avoid these problems, whether you like it or not, while also having the capacity to lead a charge in warfare if neccesary while unburdened by child labor, which renders a woman incapacitous for months at a time, all while the very act of childbearing is neccesary to avoid succession crises. The decision therefore, to pass over all of these problems and hand the kingdom to Viserys, who by all means so far, was a joyful and well-loved king (his incompetence and unwillingness to face conflict head-on was somewhat unknown now.) is one based on pragmatic logic, not sexism, even if cultural biases in westeros were ALSO an issue that jaehaerys ALSO had to consider. And let's not forget that in the end, he still just put it to a vote, ending in a very predictable turnout favoring Viserys. In short, he made the right move here.)
Even Aegon couldn't have asked for a better heir.
Turns out Maegor did two phenomenal things for his house. Breaking the backbone of the faith, and inadvertently letting Jaeharys rise to the throne. The only other Targaryen monarchs I’d put on Jaeharys’s level are Daeron II and Aegon I. Maybe Viserys II too but his actual reign was too short and he was the dad of Aegon IV which automatically lowers him a bit.
Amazing stuff bro
@@kevinneutzling8267 Whats it with this Maegor appreciation lately, lol? Jaehaerys was the one who made peace with the faith and created the special rule that essentially made an exception for the Targaryens to marry siblings to one another. The faith was extremely angry at him marrying Alysanne but he talked them out of it (and intimidated them with Vermithor).
@@kevinneutzling8267 Viserys II essentially ruled as Hand of the King for like 20 years though even before he finally became king so he is also on a similar level to Jaehaerys for me since he did so much to stabilize the realm
@@scoobydoo2587Without Maegor, the faith was always going to go against Targaryens in a brutal way. It was lucky that Maegor was more brutal. He left the Faith so broken that everyone wanted peace by the time Jahaerys arrived. And Maegor also pretty much ended the Faith Militants, which I doubt Jahaerys would have been able to achieve peacefully.
The Kingsguard wasn't there to protect Jaehaerys from his enemies, but to protect the enemies from Jaehaerys.

Being a nutjob? Yes!
That's an insult. Jaeherys was a better fighter, diplomat, politician and king than Daemon
@@asesoriaseden5510 How is comparing Daemon to Jaehaerys an insult? I totally agree that Jaehaerys was a better politician, diplomat and a king than Daemon, that much is obvious to anyone who has read the books. But Daemon took down the largest living dragon of his time when he was 49 years old, which shows how fierce and amazing of a fighter he was. Daemon has been in and won several wars due to his fighting prowess. He clearly gets it from his father Baelon and grandfather Jaehaerys. How is it an insult to draw comparisons of a grandchild to their grandfather?
Also, Daemon maybe a psychopath, but he definitely treated his wives (Laena and Rhaenyra at least) and daughters better than Jaehaerys treated his.
@@sushmitaraodesaraju6330 it was a suicide attack
@@Mohler41 So? He still managed to neutralise the biggest threats to the Blacks, didn't he? He was knighted at the age of 16, which doesn't happen often unless the person is an extremely skilled fighter. Also, Jaehaerys himself gave Dark Sister to Daemon in acknowledgement of his skills. Daemon was also said to be the most experienced warrior of his age, because he fought for years in the Stepstones. There's a reason he was considered a dangerous man, and it's not just because he was unpredictable and had a reputation for being cruel. I mean, Mooton was scared of taking on an old, sleeping Daemon, even with 6 guards, so that says something about the guy's reputation as a fighter.
Also, Daemon was 49 when he took down Vhagar, the same age Jaehaerys was when he dueled with Braxton Beesbury, so yeah, I'd say he's just as fierce or more fierce than Jaehaerys.

Most badassery of Jaehaerys was his meeting with Rogar Baratheon.
[Rogar Baratheon] asked if the king would require hostages of him, as a surety of his future loyalty. Three of his brothers had young children who could be sent to court, he pointed out. In answer, king Jaehaerys descended the Iron Throne and bade Lord Rogar follow him. He led his lordship from the hall to the inner ward where Vermithor was being fed. A bull had been slaughtered for his morning meal and lay upon the stones charred and smoking, for dragons always burn their meat before consuming it. Vermithor was feasting on the flesh, tearing loose great chunks of meat with each bite, but when the king approached with Lord Rogar, the dragon raised his head and gazed at them with eyes like pools of molten bronze. “He grows larger every day,” Jaehaerys said as he scratched the great wyrm under his jaw. “Keep your nieces and your nephews, my lord. Why would I need hostages? I have your word, that is all that I require.”

Jaehaerys is cool but he's not a perfectly good person. Martin doesn't want characters to be perfect heroes, he wants to write about complicated people, so Jaehaerys actions are complicated too. Not everything he does is perfectly good and I would say dealing that way with the relationship of is daugther isn't perfectly good either, cool, but not necessarily good.
There are no good people in a feudal caste
Except his daughter couldn't care less. Sara had 3 lovers, cheated on all of them (even with some women) tried to seduce Baelon, attempted to steal a dragon egg, then ran away and became a prostitute.
If Sara genuinely cared for the guy, Jaehaerys would've let them marry and that would've been the end of it. But nope, she said she wanted all 3.
@@hunterhorsehelmsley7315 I don't see why the assumption that Jaehaerys would let them marry is justified.
@@Xsomono I don't get what you mean. But if you read the book, you'd know Jaehaerys 100% did the right thing. Sara Targaryen is a downright sociopath.
@@Xsomono because it said in the books that Jaehaerys was debating to which one sera will marry. It wasn’t until she said she wanted all three like Maegor or Aegon. She didn’t earn that right btw
Plus have you read the shit she did? I would have done the exact same thing Jae did. She fucked half the court, she coerced her highborn friends to have sex and get pregnant, she sexually assaulted the court fool, she tried to steal a dragon egg, she blasted through nuns and when ignored all of alyssane’s letters and her response was “I have my own kingdom, why would I go or care about over there”
Bruh this man stayed ten toes like it was his daughter and he decided he was gonna handle this one himself😅😅😅
King Jaehaerys I is the king that brought golden age to the seven kingdoms until his death.
