Winter Bushcraft Hike in the Northern Wilderness - Canvas Lavvu - Swedish Torch Cooking - Snow

  • Finally out in some winter with snow and cold weather. Bushcraft and simple but good food, three day overnights and hike. First night I woke up to steps maybe 50 m south of my camp. Well not "steps", more like branches breaking etc. like someone running through the brush. Hard to hear exactly because the wind was blowing quite hard. Making 110 videos in the wild has given me these rules to live by in my shooting. Example: Always follow a shot through even though you don't feel it's good. Or always have the camera ready to record and if something out of the ordinary happens, press record without thinking and mess with the buttons and settings later. So I pressed record instantly and within a second I heard a sound..sounded like a big cat. then followed by...well you heard it, your guess is as good as mine. A big female wild boar perhaps but I heard them before and the sound was not quite right. Well... this time I didn't go to check it out. Please forgive me for chickening out. What ever happened the snow covered every trace.
First day was very warm but windy. Unreal temps in early feb actually. Felt like April. Then the next day I woke up covered in snow! I have a question if anybody can guess how I did the shot where the tent was closed and snow covered, me inside and no tracks out of it in the snow lol? The third day was warmer again. Wonder if this was it for winter this year lol.
And to all the self appointed chefs scanning youtube for something to criticize, I know how to make a carbonara, but please... try to imagine you might do it a bit differently when hiking the wild. So please no boring comments about that. Thanks for watching.

Bushcraft is a skillset. It's not mandatory as a bushcrafter to go naked to the woods and trying to survive. To do that every week is a unrealistic fantasy. The way I see it, bushcraft skills make hiking and camping more efficient, lightweight and interesting... and not to forget FUN!.

I have to thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I know no other way, so: several days ago I contracted COVID. Seemed fairly minor at the time. Similar to the flu. Survivable. Day 4 or 5 I lost a sense of taste and smell. I have since learned that there is some neurological phenomenon whereby this happens with COVID and people often associate it with “a sense of impending doom”. When I tell you there were 3 days/nights of living nightmare, imagine something effecting in a way that makes you not want to eat or drink anything whatsoever. A living nightmare. Thankfully with God’s mercy, and a loving wife I chose to fight through it. Your videos, these videos gave my tremendous amounts of comfort as I was in my own little Hell. They are so peaceful, serene, and exactly where I wanted and still want to be, communing with Mother Nature. I can only thank you a thousand times for the work you do. As a former member of the film industry I am quite aware of the painstaking measures you go to simply to create the look and feel of “your time in the woods”. It is work that is very well done indeed. Your videos were absolutely grounding and comforting during a long moment of crisis. They are priceless. I look forward to seeing more of your beautiful country. -Thank you, John

I'm no longer fit enough to do it your way, old friend. But when I was, I was more like you, and not like so many of the overgrown children I see building children's forts.
I'm more of an overland teardrop-trailer kind of guy, now. My bush-wackin' days are over, though. So it's a real pleasure to watch your videos, and remember the feeling of being truly alone in beautiful settings. When I could still do the bush-wackin', it mostly revolved around rock-hounding/prospecting and fly-fishing, which are two activities that go very well together. If my knees had held up, I'd've branched out into botany.
